ducation is key to empowering the yo-

uth. To this end an education trust is

set to be launched in the area tomor-

    row.

    The Ravensmead, Uitsig and Cravenby

(RUC) Education Trust will be launched at

the Ravensmead Secondary School, on the

    corner ofUllswater andDeLaReyStreet,Ra-

vensmead at 18:00 tomorow, and they want

the community to join them in their quest

to make a difference in the area.

All RUC members and interested parties

are invited to participate and contribute to

this historic event, an event that has the po-

tential to change the lives of many of our yo-

ung people and enhance the upliftment of

the entire community, says Benni Farao,

one of the organisers. He added that one of

the main reasons for starting this initiative

has its roots in social media tool, FaceBook.

    Facebook

We started theRUCpage, and it currently

    consists of anumberof individuals thathave

their roots in this community who now find

    themselves living successful lives across

South Africa and in fact across the world,

    says Farao.

They have carved out sterling careers for

themselves and hold leadership positions in

    prominent institutions.

Mindful of the support they received

from community structures, this group ef-

fectively networks with the underlying the-

me of finding ways to implement programs

that will benefit the RUC community and

particularly those less privileged and the

launch of this initiative is the next step in

that evolvement. One particular point of

concern that has come up in discussions on

FaceBook, is the large number of young peo-

ple who cannot reach their full potential be-

cause of financial constraints and/or inade-

quate preparation at school level. This argu-

ment can be extended to the sports

environment where the realization of talent

has been few and far and in between.

To this end a proposal to establish an edu-

cation trust had been mooted for some time

now. The executive of Ravensmead, Uitsig,

    Cravenby Development Initiative (RUCdi)

charged a working committee to assess the

    feasibility, establish the founding princi-

ples and lay the legal groundwork for the es-

tablishment of said trust, added Farao.

The outcome of consultations with the

    widerRUCnetwork overwhelmingly endor-

sed this initiative. Mike Smith of Smith Ta-

bata Attorneys developed a trust deed, on a

pro bono basis, structured on the following

    principles.

It will be a community based trust to

which any member of this community may

    make contributions whether in monetary

    terms, or otherwise.

    Financial contributions should be made

monthly and remain affordable to ensure

    sustainability.

Although the initial aimwas to establish

the trust to focus on bursary and aid for ter-

tiary studies the trust deed has made provi-

    sion for broader educationalupliftment pro-

grammes at the discretion of the trustees.

Trustees will be drawn from community

structures or interested parties to ensure

    ownership across the entire community,

they must also be respected members of the

community with a history of community

    engagement and pass financial probity

checks as would be required for members

    of a board.

Mechanisms to curtail conflict of inte-

rest by trusteeswill be developed and imple-

    mented.

All are welcome to attend the meeting at

    the school tomorrow night.

    @gvdcapejazz

Local housing capacity got a boost with the

news that the council has bought Leo Mews

    in Leonsdale.

    While this housing development was

launched with much fanfare last year there

was very little interest on the sales side of

    things.

This led to many of the units left unsold

andas a result vandals starteddamaging the

facility. The goods news is the announce-

ment at a meeting of Subcouncil 4, by chair-

person Clive Justus, that council would buy

the complex from the developer, Standard

    Bank.

Leo Mews is a finished building with 125

units, of which 90 are brand new and have

never been occupied. The 35 occupied units

in a separate block will require renovation.

An assessment ofwork to be done indica-

tes that it will cost about R2.652 million to

repair damage caused by vandalism and to

pay for the installation of security gates on

the ground floor units and iron mesh on the

front windows of the first and second floor

    units, said Justus.

Renovation has already started in the

    complex.

Justuswent on to say that allocationof the

units to members of the community will be

done from the housing database as per the

    citys approved allocations policy.

Preference will be given to the aged and

disabled and special needs cases for the

    ground floor units, he said.

Preferential allocation of units will also

be given to tenants from the broader Elsies

River area who are in good standing with

    the city.

    Tenants from Leonsdale, Adriaanse,

    Avonwood, Connaught, Eureka Estate, The

    Range, Matroosfontein, Clarke Estate, Ep-

    ping Forest, Salberau, Uitsig, Ravensmead

    and surrounds will be considered.

The term in good standing refers to te-

nants who are up to date with rental pay-

ments or who have over a period of 12

months not defaulted on arrangements ma-

    de to pay off arrears.

    No history of anti-social behaviour

should be recorded against the applicant.

Successful applicantsmust also agree to abi-

de by all policies set out by council regar-

ding the use and occupation of the rental

    unit.

The units will be managed from the Le-

onsdale Housing Office directly across the

road from where the rental units are loca-

    ted, he added.

A dedicated housing practitioner will be

assigned to Leo Mews and will be based at

    the Leonsdale Housing Office.

A flats committee will be established as

soon as 50 percent of the flats are occupied.

To facilitate the management of the facility,

a relationship management policy has been

put in place to regulate the landlord and the

    tenants responsibilities.

    Dawn verder verduidelik.

Baie keer luister die kinders nie na hul

ouers nie, maar na ander. Ons wil vir die

kinders s hullemoet slaag en dan gaan stu-

deer. Hulle moet weet daar is iemand wat

omgee, het Dawn bygevoeg. Dorothy het

ges haar dogter is n harde werker.

nood vir so n projek in gemeenskappe soos

Kalkfontein. Hy het ges tersire opleiding

    is baie belangrik vir matrikulante.

It was all celebration at the Cape

    PeninsulaUniversity of Techno-

    logy, when a new Vice-Chancel-

lor was sworn in over the wee-

    kend.

    Dr Prins Nevhutalu, was offi-

    cially inaugurated on Saturday

    at a swearing-in ceremony on

    campus by CPUT chancellor, Dr

    Trevor Manuel, and registrar

    Nikile Ntsababa.

    Nevhutalu, who has been gi-

ven a five-year contract, and re-

    places outgoing VC, Vuyisa

    Mazwi-Tanga who retired at the

end of 2013, has big plans for

CPUT, aiming to make it the

    number one university of tech-

    nology in Africa.

    Nevhutalu has been in higher

education for over 30 years, hol-

    ding senior and executive positi-

    ons within the sector.

    According to chancellor, Tre-

    vorManuel, he brings strong ex-

    perience and proven leadership

qualities with a record of delive-

    ry in senior executive manage-

    ment in leading research strate-

    gy and development processes.

He started his career as a lec-

turer in 1980 at the Department

of Medical Sciences at the then

    University of the North (now

    University of Limpopo).

    Contribution

In 1993 he was appointed as

    the executive director at the

    Foundation for Research Deve-

    lopment (now theNationalRese-

    arch Foundation, NRF). In 2006,

    he was appointed Deputy Vice-

    Chancellor for research, innova-

    tion and partnerships at Tshwa-

    ne University of Technology.

    Dr Nevhutalu has been

    warmly receivedbyboth the stu-

    dents and the academic team

and we are looking forward to

    himmaking a significant contri-

    bution to CPUTs journey to-

    wards greatness with his visio-

    nary real world approach, said

    Manuel.

    Nevhutalu holds a BSc, BSc

    Honours and a Masters degree

    from theUniversity of theNorth

and obtained his PhD in Biologi-

    cal Sciences from Northern Illi-

    nois University in the USA.

He also spent a year as a post-

    doctoral fellow at theUniversity

of San Francisco as part of a pro-

    gramme funded by the Rockefel-

    ler Foundation.

Over the last 30 years Nevhu-

talu has made an immense con-

    tribution in education and deve-

    lopment and has been recogni-

    sed in many ways including

    receiving the National Order of

    Merit Ordernational dedumer-

ti by the French president in

    2009, and the American Council

    of Education (ACE) fellowship

    in 2007.

    Commenting on his inaugura-

    tion, Nevhutalu said that he

would like to see the number of

students increase to over 40 000.

I also hope to focus on sub-

    stantially improving on the stu-

    dent success rates, graduate ra-

tes and reduce the drop-out ra-

    te, he added.

    Long term plans

I also have big plans to incre-

ase the quality of staff in terms

of their service to their stakehol-

    ders and their qualification. For

example, we hope that by 2019,

we will have at least 32% of our

    staff with doctoral qualification

    moving from the current 16%.

    He continued: We hope to

    substantially increase our rese-

    arch output and position CPUT

as the number one university of

technology in Africa. We will fo-

    cus on gettingmore publication,

    more rated researchers and mo-

    re technology related outputs.

    Wearealsodevelopingaplan for

    environmental sustainability

    ensuring the university is more

    green in energy utilisation.

Long term, I have plans to

start a new project for CPUT to

    produce graduates who will be

sensitive to the needs of our peo-

    ple, will respect human rights,

and the spirit of ubuntu, and

    will promote both economic and

    social justice.

He would also like to see gra-

duates trained in ethics and en-

    vironmental sustainability.

I want our graduates to put

    people before profit. This can

only be possible if all these hu-

    man attributes are embedded in

    our institutional culture.

    Sustainable

    Finally Iwant to leaveamore

    financially sustainable institu-

    tion with great infrastructure

    and happy staff.

    He said thatCPUTalreadyhas

much to be proud of and note-

    worthy, innovative technology

    projects, including the launch of

    SAs first nano-satellite.

    In die Staatskoerant van

Vrydag 7 Februarie is die wet

    van 2008 aangepas ten opsigte

    van die spesifikasies van

    lampe.

Ek wil by Deon Louw, n

    elektriese ingenieur met 35

    jaar ervaring in plaaslike

    regering, weet: Hoekom het ons

    spesifikasies vir muurproppe

en lampe, maar die winkels is

    propvol produkte wat nie aan

    di minimum-vereiste voldoen

    nie?

    Soos u weet, is elektriese

    toebehore vreeslik duur en

    daarom lyk die goedkoper

    ingevoerde produkte na n

    makliker en beter keuse.

    Vervaardigers kla ook dat

    hierdie produkte nie gepolisi-

eer word nie en dat dit daartoe

    lei dat handelaars enige

    produk kan verkoop.

    Die klint sal verseker die

    goedkoper produk neem, en

Jan Alleman se kennis van wat

    presies die regte regulasies vir

proppe en lampe is, is maar

    skraps.

    Daarom maak ons keuses

wat op pryse gegrond is nie

    vasgestelde standaarde nie.

Ek wil u dus aanraai om

twee keer te kyk en slegs

    produkte met die SABS-merk te

    koop.

    Jy mag dalk nou meer

    spandeer, maar die ekstra paar

    rand kan brande en selfs

    ernstige beserings voorkom.

    Die Stad Kaapstad se brand-

    en reddingsdepartement het in

    2013 op sowat 26 000 voorvalle

    gereageer talle wat vermy

    kon gewees het.

    Ek wil graag inwoners

    aanraai om verantwoordelik op

te tree en beter keuses te maak

sodat ons saam n veiliger Stad

    Kaapstad vir almal kan skep.

    Kwelvrae oor

    spesifikasies

Ons weet julle kla altyd oor

    salarisse by Shoprite, maar ek

sal julle ook min betaal as julle

    sulke swak diens lewer.

Ek staan n halfuur in die

tou en wag vir n lekker warm

brood uit die oond. My mond

water toe ek aan n dik sny

    brood met konfyt dink.

    Maar my bubble word gebars

    toe een van die werkers

    sleep-sleep van rens kom en

die brood in n sakkie sit

    sonder om handskoene te

    gebruik.

    Onmiddellik wonder ek of sy

nie dalk van die toilet af kom

nie en my gemoed sak toe

    onmiddellik.

Ek haas my na die betaal-

punt, want ek wil nie h die

    brood moet koud word nie,

maar ek sukkel om verby die

    handelaars, wie se voorraad

die hele paadjie vol staan, te

kom. Toe ek by die betaalpunt

kom, sien ek die kassier is

siekerig. Sy help my maar in

slow motion n sy haar kollega

    van haar pyne vertel.

Teen die tyd wat ek tuis kom

    so twee minute van die

winkel af is my brood koud,

my eetlus is weg en ek eet

maar die konfyt met n lepel.

    Wat het van klintediens

    geword? Dis belangrik.

    BREADLOVER

    Epos

    Wathet nou van

    klintediens geword?

I would (like to) suggest a

    practical guide for other road

    users.

By law in South Africa, a red

L must be fixed to the rear

    screen on a learner drivers

    car until the person has

    successfully passed an official

    drivers licence.

    Similarly, when a licence is

    Introduce a sign for

    newdrivers

passed in England, a red L is

placed on the rear screen by

    the official traffic department.

    This is an excellent control

    measure.

    But, here is where common

    sense kicks in.

    A green L is stuck, with a

    new registration, number on

    the reverse of the sticker,

making it official. It is also an

    indication, from the traffic

    department, that the driver may

    drive unsupervised.

    The green L must remain

on the vehicle for six months.

    The newly licensed driver must

    now prove they are competent

    drivers, excluding any station-

    ary parking and including

    moving accidents.

    After the six months, the

    driver must return to the

    original traffic department, and

    an official will remove the

    green L.

    Only then is the driver

    considered to be competent road

    user.

    This is also a tremendous

    deterrent for people driving

    without any licence and just

sticking a red L on their car.

High schools have until 28March to register

Grade 11 and 12 learners for the SAICA

(South African Institute of Chartered Ac-

    countants) Pastel Accounting Olympiad

that will be taking place on 14 May.

The olympiad is open to talented Grade 11

    and 12 learners.

In 2013 the olympiad attracted 4 465 grade

11 and 12 learners from 338 schools across

the country and it is hoped that the number

and quality of entrants will increase this ye-

    ar.

    The competition identifies accounting ta-

lent at school level, popularises accounting

as a subject, and draws the link between ac-

counting at school and a possible career in

    an accounting or business field.

This is in line with SAICAs strategy to

grow the number of chartered accountants

as well as to transform the profession.

The total prize value for this competition

is R 245 000, and the national winner will go

    home with an iPad.

The accounting teachers of the provincial

winners will receive a cash prize of R2 000

each and the best schools in each province

will also receive prizes such as desktop com-

    puters pre-loaded with Pastel software.
