wo families in Bishop Lavis want to

warn the public about a new scam rela-

ting to landscaping doing the rounds in

the community.

What should have been an enhancement

to their homes has turned into an eyesore

and loss of money.

Promises of promotions and deals for fea-

turing as a showhouse have turned to

nought for these families and there are fears

that the scamsters may be moving to other

surrounding areas.

In the first case Sylvie Ste-

vens was approached and

thought that she was getting

the deal of a lifetime.

I have alwayswanted to do

something about the sand in

front of our house, she says.

Last week, out of the blue

I was visited by a woman cal-

ling herself Kimberly who

toldmeabout the landscaping

and paving services that they

offer.

I originally wanted to

know what it would cost to

have the front section tarred

but then she gave me a story

abouthowour facebrickhouseneeded some-

thing different.

She convincedme that because ourhouse

wouldbeusedasa showhouse tohighlight

their work, they had a special type of stone

that would match the house. Because the

house would be used as a showhouse we

would also be getting it at a special pri-

ce,she says.

Stevens was also convinced of their since-

rity when they pointed out that they did not

want a deposit, you paid when they were fi-

nished.

Unfortunately on the day that they came

to do the work I was not home, and my hus-

band paid them the R2 500, for what he

thought was a job in progress, but they did

not even give him a receipt.

They even wanted an extra R500 to add

an extra gloss finish and when he did not

have it they started reducing the price.

When I got home I was horrified to see

what they had done. It was just gravel that

had been spread in front of the house.

It was nothing like what they showedme

in their books, and my hus-

band then said that they had

wet it telling him that the ce-

ment would set and keep the

stones in place.

Look at it, its all just co-

ming loose, she pointed out.

James Johannes also fell

for the same story when the

same people offered to make

a difference to his driveway.

We have cemented our

driveway and yard, but there

were some holes that needed

filling, he said.

These people approached

mewith the same story of how

they could enhance it by filling the holes and

adding a new product that will make it look

like it has been tarred.

On the first day they came and filled the

holes with tar, and tarred the front section

near the road, but then it all went wrong

when they spread what was supposed to be

the newcoating.

hop dancer Nick Floorkiller

Matthee and Tonya September,

who is part of the 2LEGIT dan-

ce group in Delft will be perfor-

ming as a duo in a hip-hop dan-

ce performance as part of the

1st Step Educare Community

Show at Roosendal High school

on Saturday 3 May from 09:00

to 18:00.

Tonya, who is in matric at

Florida High school in Raven-

smead, always had a passion

for dance and started at a very

young age.

She has won awards with the

Africa Ablaze project and per-

formed with the Ackermans

dance studio team.

She will also be performing

with Nick at Alvon Collisons

annual Mothers Day musical

show at the City Hall on Satur-

day May 11.

The educare community

show will feature a variety of

performing artists such as Ulti-

mateZ Dance Crew and freesty-

Family devastated by fire

A family in Greenlands lost all their possessions when their house was

destroyed by a fire recently. The Hansens in Plane Street are seen here

in the ruins of their house that was destroyed when an apparent

electrical fault caused the fire. While family and friends in the commu

nity are trying to assist with a place to stay and food, they need help

rebuilding their lives. Anybody who wants to help them can contact

The angels of Little Angels Educare in Greenlands showed that they

cared about the family in their community by managing to collect

some clothing and foodstuff for them. Mercia Esterhuizen from Little

Angels hands over the donations to one of the family members in front

of the shell of their home.

What they initially explained to me was

notwhat theywere producing. It just looked

like a type of black oil or paint that they we-

re applying and it looked horrible.

When I questioned them about it they

told me that they would spray it with water

and it would get the proper affect. As you

can see it has not happened and now I have

to have this whole area re-done, but this ti-

me I am getting a reputable company.

Both families tried calling the number on

the card they were given and were at first

given the runaround about coming to redo

the work, but then there were no replies

from that number.

At first they said they did not know the

people who worked here, and then they

stopped answering their phone, said Jo-

hannes.

The two families are planning to take the

matter to the small claims court and have

approached an attorney in this regard.

We want people to be aware of these con

artists, and if there aremore peoplewho ha-

ve had the same experience they must get

in contact with us, concluded Stevens.

Wie en wat is n narsis? Narsisme is n

persoonlikheidsversteuring waar die

individu beskryf word as oormatig behep

met persoonlike toereikendheid, mag,

prestige en ydelheid.

Ons kan die narsis beskryf as n mens

met n oormatige selfliefde. n Gesonde

selfliefde is natuurlik goed vir n mens.

Jy het dit nodig vir n positiewe self-

beeld en vir selfvertroue. Narsisme het

egter n oordrewe liefde vir homself.

Die narsis toon die volgende simptome:

. Oordrewe gevoel van sy belangrik-

heid en prestasies;

. n Obsessie met die eie ek;

. Doelwitte is oordrewe, onrealisties

en selfgesentreerd;

. Wil altyd die beste van alles h;

. Ervaar vinnig verwerping;

. Loop ander in om sy eie doelwitte te

bereik;

. Het fantasie oor sy eie sukses,

aantreklikheid en intelligensie;

. Word geweldig jaloers;

. Soek voortdurend aandag en erken-

ning van ander;

. Sukkel om gesonde verhoudinge te

ders. Die narsis lei aan n grootheids-

waan en is arrogant en meerderwaardig

teenoor ander mense. Jy moenie die

narsis probeer kritiseer nie hy hou

niks daarvan nie. Enige verhouding

romanties sowel as vriendskaplik word

dan ook gekenmerk deurdat hy wil

domineer, sy wil afdwing, en hy duld nie

teenspraak nie. Hy is uitermatig jaloers

en dit versuur natuurlik sy verhoudinge

en lei tot konflik.

Die narsis sal verskillende strategie

en metodes gebruik om homself te

beskerm. Hy sal byvoorbeeld n ander se

mening en prestasies afkraak en met

vyandigheid bejen. Hy is vyandig

teenoor enigiets wat sy ego sal skaad.

Kortom: n Narsis ag homself as uiterma-

te belangrik in die wreld en sy oordre-

we selfliefde maak dat hy nie egte

empatie, simpatie en begrip vir ander

mense het nie.

Dis nie aldagwat nmens n onverwagte gas

Dis egter di verrassing wat Jerome Jo-

seph, n inwoner van Bardale Village in Sil-

versands, verlede Paasnaweek ervaar het

toe n Kaapse kobra tot op sy stoep geseil

het. Ek was by die huis toe my buurman

komkuier het. Ons het toe op die stoep gesit

en gesels.

Nog een van ons bure stop toe en vrawat

dit is wat daar aankom. Toe kom die slang

van die sypaadjie af en rol oor die gras tot

op die stoep, het Jerome ges.

Toe die slang op sy stoep kom, toe hard-

loop hy in en waarsku sy vrou om nie uit

te kom nie. Ek los die slang toe net daar

in die hoek van die stoep. Ek het nie geweet

wat omtedoennie. nRukkie laterwashier

n klompmensemet vurke en grawe om die

slang dood te maak.

Die sekerheidsmense was ook hier,

maar ons skakel toe die Dierebeskermings-

vereniging (DBV), het Jerome verduide-

lik. Die DBV het eers sowat drie ure later

opgedaag.

n Beampte van die DBVhet die slang om-

streeks 15:00 verwyder.

Jerome het uit vrees vir die slang by die

venster uitgeklouter om weer buitekant te

kom. Volgens hom is die slang sowat n me-

ter lank en bruin van kleur.

Voordat die slang in n houer gelaai is, is

daar gedemonstreer hoe hy reageer wan-

neer hy bedreig voel.

Dis ook maar goed die mense het die

slang nie gevang nie, want dit kon noodlot-

tig wees. Die volgende oggend het ek seker

gemaak daar is nie weer n slang nie, het

hy ges.

Een van sy bure se kinders het glo die

slang die vorige dag opgemerk, maar niks

daarvan gedink nie. Die kind het vir syma

ges daar is n slang, maar toe s sy dis se-

ker n wurm. Sy het later opgemerk dis n

slang, maar sy het niks ges nie.

BrettGlasby, bestuurdervandiewildeen-

heid van die Kaap van Goeie Hoop-DBV in

Plumstead, het bevestig dat die slang n

Kaapse kobra was. Kaapse kobras is dode-

lik giftig en die gif tas hoofsaaklik die senu-

weestelsel aan. Wanneer iemand een van

die soort slange tekom, moet hulle liewer

n veilige afstand handhaaf, die slang se be-

wegingsmonitor en n geregistreerde slang-

vanger kontak vir hulp.

A local bank is taking the initiative of ma-

king its services easier for residents.

Representatives from Capitec Bank visi-

tedNooitgedacht recently to assist residents

to open accounts.

This initiative took place in co-operation

with local ward councillor Nas Abrahams,

who approached the bankwhenhe discover-

ed the needs of many of the residents in the

area.

During my work in the area I discovered

that therewere still many peoplewho do not

have a bank account, he said.

Sometimes we use people from the com-

munity in some of our projects for the city,

butwehave topay themintoabankaccount.

Many of them just did not have the time

to go to a bank so I approached Capitec to

ask how they could help and immediately

made my offices available for them for this

project, said Abrahams.

Faye Meyer, operations manager for the

bank, said initiatives like these were part of

their policy of providing their low cost, high

count to community members.

Bank goes to the people


Majedien Norton made history in South Af-

rica, but for the wrong reasons. He was the

first person in the country to be foundguilty

in a court of law for pirating a movie.

This, according to technology news site,

Broadband.com, as well as Son newspaper.

According to the tabloid, the 29-year-old

father of two from Epping pleaded guilty on

Thursday 17 April to ille-

gally uploading the gang-

ster-themed movie Four

Corners onto the internet.

Because of Norton, the

movie which recently

started showing in cine-

mas locally was availa-

ble to all and sundry since

the end of last year for as

little as R5, the tabloid

said, causing the movie to

suffer huge losses at the

box office.

Helen Kuun of Indige-

nous Film Distribution,

tasked with distributing

the movie, told the paper

the box office suffered be-

cause pirate copies were

freely available before the

premire.

Norton pleaded guilty in the Bellville

Commercial Crimes Court on charges of il-

legal copying and distribution and was sen-

tenced to a three-year suspended sentence

and a R3000 fine, the tabloid said.

Norton, an employee at a mechanical

workshop, will be retrenched at the end of

the month. He said he got the Four Corners

CD from a friend who was selling it on a

street corner in Parow.

According to Son, he admits to having

uploaded the CD to the internet to share

with others, and admitted in his plea barga-

to R10 000.

First time offenders

could look at three years in jail and a fine

of up to R5 000 for distributing copyrighted

content without the proper license, Broad-

band.com reported.

The site quoted Four Corners director Ian

Gabriel as stating that while he is pleased

the film is reachingmore people, in the long

run if such piracy remained unchecked it

would literally mean the end of film-ma-

king.

Die wisselkoers is deesdae so swak dat

spelers vir kleingeld oorsee gaan speel,

hrough his love of horses and hismusi-

cal talents, local singer Gerald Clark

has found a way to help others.

Touched by the work that groups like

Equitots in Durbanville are doing for child-

ren with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS),

Gerald and retailer Jade&Velvet started the

The FASt Forward Fund last year to financi-

ally help organisations working with FAS

children.

Their main focus is to afford young FAS

sufferers the chance toworkwithhorses and

ponies in a therapy environment.

FAS is the result ofmothers consuming al-

cohol during pregnancy. Their children of-

ten experience physical, behavioural, deve-

lopmental and cognitive difficulties.

But children receive physical and cogniti-

ve benefits from working with horses.

It was seeing these benefits that made Ge-

rald want to get involved.

The one little girl, Abigail, stood out for

me in particular, he recalls. Abigail was

born prematurely and it was expected she

wouldnt be able to walk due to FAS.

I was there during a session when she

was put on a horse andwithin a fewminutes

I could see her orientating herself and get-

ting interested in her surroundings.

Besides physical benefits like improved

balance, posture and muscle tone, working

withhorses also seemst tohelpwith attenti-

on span, reasoning skills, memory retention

and a host of other cognitive functions.

The other day I saw her running around,

dancing and laughing,Gerald says of three-

year-old Abigail.

This is a very effective way of helping

these kids develop, he says.

The FASt Forward Fund works together

with the Beyers Truter Foetal Alcohol-Syn-

drome and Interrelated Treatment Help

Fund (FAITH). FAITH Funds main focus is

awareness and warning mothers about the

dangers of drinking while pregnant.

Gerald has roped in friends in to help rai-

se funds for FASt Forward and they will be

joining him on stage at Barnyard Theatre,

Willowbridge on Sunday 4 May.

Meister and Guy Collins will make up the

all star lineup which will be held together

by MC Pietman, who will keep guests enter-

TygerBurger joined hands with the Twitter

Blanket Drive (#TBD) to act as a collection

point for donations this year.

The Twitter Blanket Drive is a uniquely

South African, community-driven response

to the needs of the poor during the winter

months.

The drive started with a single tweet in

2010. Founder, Melanie Minnaar, contem-

plating the cold winter ahead, tweeted:

What if each person on Twitter donated a

blanket?. Since then, the #TBD movement

has grown in leaps and bounds.

All efforts promoting thenational drive fo-

cus on Twitter. All beneficiary organizati-

ons are non-profits registered with the De-

partment of Social Development.

Collection points and events have been

created across the country, some taking the

form of a Tweetup, whereby Twitter users

tweet about donating their blankets and all

enjoy ameal or drink at the collection point,

generally a restaurants or cafe.

The Twitter Blanket Drive has injected a

true sense of community into the SouthAfri-

can Twittersphere, as Twitter users join in

to help disadvantaged communities keep

warm during winter.

The Twitter Blanket Drive has also expa-

nded to nearby countries, as seen during

2012, when a Zimbabwe event was held, with

great success.

There will be Tweetup events in Cape

Town, Johannesburg and Durban on Thurs-

day 29 May 2014. The main event in Cape

Town will be at the Fire & Ice Hotel in the

CBD.

Northern Suburbs residents can drop

their blankets off at the reception area ofTy-

gerBurgers offices at the Bloemhof Buil-

ding, on the corner of Bloemhof and Edward

Streets in Bellville.
