Just as Slater stepped onto the beachhe onceabandoned in terror, the NSRI arrived onthe scene. While they waited for the SPCA to show

up, NSRI volunteers tried to warm up thefrightened dog.Soon Slater, who shares a name with 11

times world surfing champion Kelly Slater, was surrounded by onlookers, who includedthe SPCA, but he was only searching for oneperson – his owner. And then Shawn Steyn arrived. If Slater had enough energy left one could

imagine the dog forgetting his injured legandrunning toShawn’s embrace in slowmo-tion. “He was stoked,” exclaims Shawn. He recounted events leading up to the res-

cue to TygerBurger.“I visited a friend’s house near the beach

when Slater jumped over the wall. I went af-ter him and saw him barking at someoneselling stuff next to the road. As he backedinto the road a car hit him and he just ran.I tried calling him back, but he would notstop!”Shawn searched for Slater along beaches

and asked many people if they saw a bordercollie running past. He was dropped off at

Derdesteen and walked back towards Edenon the Bay, hoping to see his three-year-oldfriend, but to no avail. Then, in the distance,he saw the NSRI boat and the SPCA vehiclesurrounded by people.

This was the reunion he was waiting for.Slaterwas taken to thevet andhedidn’t evenneed any stitches.According to Shawn, hisdog is a little traumatised, but nothing tooserious.“He’s lying next to me now, moaning that

I’m talking to you and not playing withhim,” laughed Shawn during the telephonicinterview. SPCA’s public relations officerWanika Rusthoi said animals react in differ-ent ways during a crisis “because they’re alldifferent sentient beings with their owncharacters”.“Different breeds and genders also con-

tribute to theways inwhichanimals expressthemselves. With regards to this case, thedog is a young male border collie, unsteri-lised, and is often taken for walks along thebeach. With the trauma of this incident, itcould have sent him into a state of shock, with adrenaline pumping through his veins– causing him to run. It can only be assumedthat he ran toward familiar ground (thebeach) and ended up in the water,” she sur-mises.The story was posted on NSRI’s Facebook

group and according toBarnes it has attract-ed thousands of hits since it was posted.

It was only when the intoxicated manstomped towards him while waving anaccusatory finger that Garth Lezard (40)

felt the oppressing heat of Mozambique. Here he was, completely exposed to the

elements in a rural part of a foreign coun-try. All he had with him was his bicycle, scanty belongings and the camera he justused to takeaportrait of awomanandchild. The advancing threat of an inebriated lo-

calmade him realise hewas inGod’s hands. As soon as the man reached for his cam-

era, Garth took out a lighter and dangledit in front of him, saying: “Here we go! I be-lieve you are looking for a lighter!”A moment of hesitation from the man

gaveGarth enough time to jumponhis bicy-cle and flee the scene. While he was riding away he wondered

why on earth he was pedalling around theworld, taking photos and raising awarenessfor good causes. The answer? “I do this to raise awareness

and funds for Cheshire Homes. It gives methe confidence to court the media, to speakabout what I’m doing. If it was just aboutthe cycling Iwouldhave stopped a long timeago,” he told TygerBurger during his visitto Eric Miles Cheshire Home in Milnerton. As for the dangers of crossing borders

and momentarily distracting drunken lo-cals, he said there is an element of dangerin every moment of life.“All you have to do is realise this and get

out of difficult situations as soon as possi-ble. The secret is to persevere. I also firmlybelieve in one’s relationship with the HolySpirit. Thatwill keep you calmandgive youthe realisation you might have to gothrough something difficult to achievegood.”For every lowlight he encounters, howev-

er, there are 100 highlights.

“The biggest one happened in Surinam,a remote place in the Amazon. I was on theroad, about two days from the main city. While I was cycling a car pulled over andsomeone got out. I told him my story andat that point Surinam was about the 15thcountry I hadvisited onmyround theworldtrip. I shared my story with everyone whocame within my vicinity. By chance thisguywas a reporter from a local paper in thecapital city (Paramaribo). I was on the frontpage and he got me on television. It wasfrom that point that I realised I could makesomething more from this story than justputting my head down and cycling. It wasa catalyst for me.”He has already been around the world

four times, the first time from 1997 – 2000as a surfer. Then his passion for photo journalism

took himaround theworld twice, from cow-boy festivals in Argentina to cage fightingin Russia.

Part of his current global cycling tour in-volves going from one Super Rugby teamstadium to the next.“I sharemy journey and the charity, take

photos with the players and do a little videointerviewwith them. I will edit it all togeth-er in a documentary. I did all the New Zea-land andAustralian teams, and that iswhatbrought me to Cape Town this time.”The photo journalism and rugby take a

back seat to his greater purpose though.“After a round the world trip I explored

a number of social problems I could get in-volved in. While visiting family in Lusaka,I heard that my cousin used to volunteer ata children’s Cheshire home and I joined herone day. There I heard about CheshireHomes all over the world. I have now beento more than 20 Cheshire homes on six con-tinents. They were my natural choice ofcharity to raise awareness for.”V Follow Garth Lezard on Twitter or on his newlyestablished Facebook group.

Car thief foiled by quick thinking momANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The car thief almost got away with it.Were it not for a determined moth-

er, a fleet-footed son, a security com-pany and a neighbourhood watch, hewould have been cruising in a vehicle thatdid not belong to him.The thief’s mission was, in fact, doomed

from the moment he tried to drive away inthe bakkie secured with a steering wheellock.Table View Neighbourhood Watch

spokesperson Jamie Agenbag explainedthat on Thursday last week at about 15:50

“amember of the public saw her son’s bak-kie being broken into in Libertas Avenue.“ The suspect then attempted to steal thevehicle.”The woman rushed towards the moving

bakkie and jumped onto the load bed.Thatwas probably themomentwhen the

thief realisedhe couldnot turn the steeringwheel.

FlabbergastedHe came to a stop on the pavement and

got out of the vehicle. The woman didn’tmiss the opportunity to whack the thiefagainst his head. The flabbergasted thief started running

down the street, but hot on his heels wasthe woman’s son, the owner of the bakkie. The man caught up with the thief, but

could not hold on to him and saw him es-caping into the adjacent greenbelt area.“The wife of the owner of Green Platoon

witnessed this and Green Platoon wasalerted and gave chase through the green-belt. They caught up with the suspect andapprehended him. Table View Neighbour-hood Watch provided backup and support.Other security companies also arrived tosupportGreenPlatoon. Thepolice arrestedthe suspect and found tools on him that wesuspect would be used to break into vehi-cles,” said Agenbag.

“Well done to everyone involved! Thisjust goes to show that if we work as a com-munity, we can achieve great things.”

CautionAgenbag, nonetheless, had aword of cau-

tion to the public when she said that thesuspect was armed with a knife.“Thankfully he did not use it on anyone,

but the public should rather not involvethemselves in a chase of this nature,” sheconcludes.V The whole incident was recorded on someone’s“dashcam”, a camera mounted in front of a car.To view the video search “Libertas attempted vehicle theft” on YouTube.

If vagrants take garbage from a refuse bin,is it theirs? And what if a member of thepublic then takes the vagrant’s bag? Is thattheft?

These questions came to the fore after aParklands woman recently seized a va-grant’s bag and refused to give it back.

Outgoing community police forum chair-person Andrew Brace, and previous princi-pal inspector of the Displaced People’s Unit(DPU), Wayne Aldridge, clarified the mat-ter to TygerBurger.

“If you put something into the municipalrefuse bin with the intention of throwing itaway and move the bin off your propertythen the contents of the bin belongs to theCity of Cape Town. While the bin is on yourproperty it still belongs to you.”

He says a member of the public has as lit-tle right to take a vagrants bag as it is forthe vagrant to take something out of thedustbin and putting it in there.

In such a situationAldridge says it is bestto notify the police, who are within theirrights to seize the bag. “It is up to the streetperson to prove that whatever is in that bagbelongs to him or her,” he continues.

“One thing is certain, members of thepublic should be very careful they don’tsubject themselves to a charge of assaultwhile they try to remove a bag, which in re-ality does not belong to them.”

Brace says the DPU can remove a varietyof items from vagrants. “These include anyitem that can be used to erect any type ofstructure, shelter or cover for possible un-lawful occupation of city owned land; shop-ping trolleys and carts; and any other itemsthat might be stolen goods.

Unlicensed shuttle service vehicles havecome under the spotlight after one of thesevehicles hit a young woman in West Beachon Wednesday afternoon.

According to a resident, the minibusdriver left the scene soon afterward to pickup children from a nearby school.

Resident Agi Orfanos heard “a big bang”and rushed out to find a 19-year-old girl sit-ting next to the road. “There was a crackin the windshield of the minibus and thebody of the vehiclewas slightly dented.”Or-fanos said someone said the police shouldbe notified, but the driver said he was run-ning late and could not wait for the policeto arrive. “He was supposed to go and pickup children at Blouberg Ridge Primary

School. During this time I noticed that theminibus’ licence had expired.”

Milnerton police spokesperson W/ODaphneO’Reilly said no accident of this na-ture was reported to the police. She said ifan unlicenced vehicle is in an accident thenthe owner would be charged for drivingwithout a licence. There are apparentlymany different shuttle services for parentsto choose from.

A shuttle service owner who prefers tostay anonymous said she wasn’ surprisedan unlicensed vehicle was allegedly in-volved in this accident, since she comesacross many of these vehicles in her line ofwork.“Parents often choose the cheapestoption without ensuring the vehicle theirchild will be transported in is licensed.”

The 19-year-old woman was apparentlynot seriously injured.

A small fire in a storage room in CanalWalk shopping centre on 18 Julycaused chaos andpanic, say a fewpeo-

ple who were caught up in the clamour.Therewere apparently long queues at the

parking pay stations and the parking baybooms as people left the centre in droves.According to shopper Tammy van Zyl, an

alarm went off at about 17:30.“My husband and I were just leaving

Edgars when the deafening alarm shotthrough the mall. We just saw nervous peo-ple rushing toward the exits. We asked a se-curity guard what was going on and he saidhe had no idea,” says van Zyl.The two made their way to the exit and

saw a very long queue of people trying topay their parking tickets. After that they had to queue again at the

booms, only to see someone in a bakkie hav-ing to reverse and go back to the pay stationto pay his parking ticket.Van Zyl says when they finally got to the

booms, they pressed the “help” button, butno-one responded. At least 45 minutes later she and her hus-

band finally exited the centre.Canal Walk marketing manager Vanessa

Herbst confirmed there was a small fire ina storeroom at one of the stores which trig-gered the fire alarms.“As a result our standard procedures

were followed to ensure shopper safety. This lead to a portion of the centre beingevacuated until such time as MilnertonFire Department had responded and de-clared the building safe.”Herbst said it was a short evacuation and

the centre went back to trading as normal.“We apologise for any inconveniencecaused by the evacuation.”When askedwhy security seemed to have

been uninformed, she said theywere awareof the evacuation, but “are not able to in-form every customer of the details as theirobjective is to get all customers safely outthe centre”.She said people were not supposed to

leave in their cars during an evacuationprocedure, but the parking staff did go tothe booms, which were then opened. Why this didn’t happen immediately is

not clear.Herbst saidCanalWalk’s evacuationplan

was adequate and drills are frequently car-ried out. She said a “full investigation of therecent evacuation” had been carried outand they were “always looking at ways ofenhancingand improvinganyprocedures”.

Mall fire causes brief panic

Develop your tot’s fine motor skillsin a creative and nurturingenvironment to stimulatesensory awareness and aidright brain development.

It’s hard to believe, but the year is slippingaway. By now, if your child is due to go intoGrade R in 2015, you should have found aschool and registered your youngster.Apart from booking a place, there are somethings you can do tomake your child’s tran-sition easier.

Blankie and doll weaningThe blankie or stuffed tiger your child

lugs EVERYWHERE needs to go into semi-retirement. Most schools prefer that toysare not brought into class, unless for show-and-tell, so in order to avoid last-minutetrauma on the first day of school, start gen-tlyweaning your child off any objectwhichtheyuse for comfort. This needn’t be apain-ful process if you’re patient, kind and posi-tive in your approach.

Clothing, diet and napsA classroom environment will mean

there’s less freedom in choice of food types, eating times and clothing choices. Find outwhat times the school you’ve chosen hassnack or meal times, what foods they don’tallow, and whether or not your child mustcomply with clothing rules, such as wear-ing shoes, for example. Then you can startto mimic the routine now, in preparationfor the big day. Similarly, nap times mayneed to be adjusted.

Ageappropriate school readinessChildren going into Grade R don’t have

to be able to perform academically - they’regoing to school for that - but you can helpprepare them with basic skills such as jig-saw puzzle building, cutting with safe scis-sors, pencil grip and posture. These needn’tbe strenuous, just fun crafting times athome.

Expressive actionOne of amazing things about small kids

is their ability to absorb information. Agreat skill to start working on is showingthem how to express all the awesome funthey’re having. When on a naturewalk, talkabout what you’re seeing, and ask themquestions: What does that look like, whatdoes that colour remind you of, how manybirds are on that fence? When you gethome, ask them to tell you aboutwhat theyenjoyed most, or what they found interest-ing.

Youmaybepanicking abouthowyour lit-tle one is going to cope, but if you find outas much as you can, and understand whatyour childwill be going through, it will giveyou some peace of mind, too.V Article courtesy of www.parent24.com.

Bright decorating ideas for kids

It’s a good idea to keep storage options on the child’s height. This way they will use it more often.

Decorating a bedroom for young childrenwhe-re they can both play and sleep, can be challen-ging.Here are a fewtips for designingandorga-nising a playful, creative kid’s room.

V To help your children stay organised, keepthings at their height. Closet storage, benchesand coat racks will all be used more often ifkids can get to them easily.

V Try creating a continuous art centre byusing wooden panelling that lines the lowerpart of the walls of a room (wainscoting) andpainting thewall belowwith chalkboard paint. You can get chalkboard paint in the color ofyour choice. Simply paint up to a chair rail orinstall your own and paint below.

V Most craft and hobby stores sell an additi-ve to paint that allows it to glow in the dark.Try painting stars and a moon on your child’sceiling or a cityscape around the edge of theroom. This will get them excited about turningout the lights at night.

V Removable wall transfers are becoming in-creasingly affordable and the range of patternsand styles expand every day. Call them tempo-rary wall tattoos and let your kid have fun de-corating their room in a way you know youwon’t have to fix later.

V Kids are collectors, somake collecting easy.Pictures and postcards don’t always have to bestuck to a corkboard. Try hanging them fromstrings in front of a window or clipping themto a string along the wall to create an interacti-ve border in a room.

V All kidswant display space. Galvanisedme-tal is fairly inexpensive and can be purchasedin sheets at most home improvement stores.Just mount on the wall and you have an in-stant magnetic board.

V Check your local art and crafts store forpeel-and-stick cork. You can cut out any shape, simply peel off the backing and attach to anywall for fun pin-up space.

V Rather than a traditional growth chart puta border around the room.

Eachmonthyou canusenon-toxic,water-ba-sed paint to put the child’s handprint in theborder. Watch them grow together.

V Be sure to include multiple kinds oflighting in a kid’s room. Overall lighting is a ne-

cessity but so is a reading light. It may evenhelp them find the bathroom in the middle ofthe night.

V If you are painting a dresser or other furni-ture you know the child will grow out of besure to let them help.

The child could also put their signature onit with personal handprints or fingerprints fora polka-dot design.V This aricle is compiled from tips by designer Dan Vic-kery on www.hgtv.com.

People who photograph a rare objector endangered species with theircellphones could inadvertently as-

sist criminals or poachers.“Geotagging”, a function on smart

phones and tablets that adds geographi-cal information to the photographs andvideos one takes, can be retrieved bycriminals when viewing the footage onsocial websites.

“Geotagging lets viewers know wherea picture was taken. While this is greatfor a beautiful view, it’s a risk for endan-gered wildlife,” explains EttienneJacques Küyler, the Biodiversity AreaCo-ordinator of the Blaauwberg region.

Roy Fuller-Gee, chairperson of theFriends of the Blaauwberg ConservationArea, adds that this does not only applyto endangered animals, but any rareitems.

“There are a number of critically en-dangered plants and medicinal plants inthe reserve. Geotagging can also leadsomeone straight to historical or cultur-

al artefacts. There has been theft of Bat-tle of Blaauwberg items from the battle-field before. Geotagging can even leadsomeone to a collection of paintings inprivate homes and exhibition areas,”says Fuller-Gee.

Küyler elaborates on geotagging, say-ing that some technology automaticallyrecords the GPS location for every imageone takes. This information is writteninto the picture’s metadata, so when oneuploads the images to the web, the geo-graphical coordinates are included aswell.

“On smart phones the geotagging fea-ture is automatically turned on, so youhave to turn it off if you don’t want toreveal the location of all your pictures. On an iPhone you press ‘Settings’ and se-lect ‘General’, then ‘Location Services’.Disable the applications that make useof GPS information. On Blackberry, se-lect the camera icon. Press ‘Menu’, fol-lowed by ‘Options’. Set the geotaggingoption to ‘Disabled’ and save. On An-droid activate the camera and press thesettings button. Turn off ‘Geotagging’ or‘Location Storage’.”

Pasop vir partyelektrisiëns

I am constantly surprised byhow many dog owners in theKenridge and Durbanville Hillsareas walk their dogs withoutleashes, and how many dogsroam the streets without theirowners.

While walking my miniaturepoodle on a leash last year, shewas attacked by a large dogwho grabbed her in his mouth, shook her around, ran off, thensuddenly dumped her.

Owners should keepdogs on the leash

Needless to say, there was alarge veterinary bill, which theowner of the dog refused todiscuss and he renouncedownership. The police subse-quently told me that the doghad been returned to the pound.

While walking my dog withmy husband this year, aDoberman ran out of theproperty and went straight formy poodle. My husband kickedhim away before he could dodamage.

Not so long ago my neigh-bours were walking their dogon a leash and a St Bernardwent for their Labrador, attaching himself to the Labra-dor’s rump.

While driving in the neigh-bourhood last week, I noticed awoman walking two large dogswithout leashes, and on anotheroccasion, a man walking a largedog off leash.

I am too afraid to go for awalk, which is good for myhealth and that of my small pet, because of the unsocialisedanimals in our vicinity. It’s notright.

Please be conscious of youranimals, practise responsibleownership and let us get backonto the streets in our lovelyneighbourhood.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Running freecomes withresponsibilityWith great friendship, comes greatresponsibility.

While there’s no denying that pets area man, or woman’s best friend, many petowners forget the responsibilities thatcome with looking after our furryfriends.

One of these responsibilities is protec-ting your dogs against others and makingsure that they don’t harm other animals.

It is commonplace to see ownerswalking their dogs off their leads, andwhile in an ideal world, it would belovely to be able to give them thatfreedom, there are often complicationsthat come with letting animals go wherethey please.

According to the City of Cape Town’sanimal by-law, no dog is allowed in apublic street or space without a leash, unless the dog is in an area designatedby the council as a free running area. While there don’t seem to be too many ofthese in the Northern Suburbs, a list ofdog friendly beaches can be found atwww.spca-ct.co.za.

Likewise, owners also have a responsi-bility to clean up after their dogs. Simplycarrying a plastic bag with you when youare walking your dog would allow you topick up his “business” and discard it in abin where it cannot offend anyone.

At the end of the day, being considerateis all it takes to create an environmentwhere we can all care for our pets inharmony. Simply ensure your dog can’tdo what you wouldn’t want another to doto yours.

The off-beat band made up of Gertjie Bes-selsen, Jacques du Plessis, Pierre-ArnoldTheron, Marcel Christie and JC Visser, gottheir start in 2006 writing theatrical scoresfor local productions.

“The plan was always to develop it intoa live music band,” Gertjie says, but pointsout that they use the same sort of structurein the band’s music they would in scoringa theatre production.

Once their songs have been recorded theythen work out how to perform them live.“It’s always a bit different from the recor-ding.” With a myriad of unusual instru-ments making their way into their music, the band’s live shows are something of a the-atrical production in themselves.

Gertjie and Jacques usually develop thesong’s core before figuring out what accom-paniment it needs, the song then gets recor-ded and has percussion and other elementsadded. “Then it would be much more instru-ments than we can actually play live on sta-ge with five guys.”

This is why they band are a lot more expe-rimental in studio, where Jacques says theydo a lot of layering. “That definitely comesfrom composing for theatre,” he says.

The result, as Gertjie explains, is a thea-trical, alternative folk sound. “It’s difficultto pin point one thing because we draw fromlots of different genres and we play differentinstruments,” he says.

Gertjie says the new album is more seri-ous than their previous releases. “It’s moreof a grown up album,” he says, quickly poin-ting out that it hasn’t lost any of the band’sexperimental flair.

The album’s themes came from what theband had been writing over the last few ye-ars. “We didn’t plan on a concept album,”Jacques says. “It feels to me like we kindof found certain ways of writing certainsong.” It just so happened the songs fittedinto three different themes.

Gertjie says the new album puts forwardwhat the band wants to be doing.

While some of the album was recorded atThe Fresh Meat Studio in Durbanville andthe University of Stellenbosch’s studio, thethird studio is “everywhere else”.

Gertjie explains that they recordedsoundscapes like the sound of a river, or fi-re, which set the tone or vibe for the songs.“It’s like the feel of where the song goes andsits on top of,” he says.

Fans can experience the album’s vibe atthe launch at Garden Court Hotel in Wal-mer Estate on Tuesday 5 August. Ticketscost R125 and can be booked at www.citysoi-ree.co.za.

Launched as a two-day ‘festival of run-ning’ from Saturday 20 September toSunday 21 September, with themain at-

traction on the final day, the Sanlam CapeTown Marathon has achieved significantplanning targets in the build-up to its 60-daycountdown.Towards its five-year vision of becoming

an internationally accredited 42.2km mara-thon, an InternationalAssociation ofAthlet-ics Federation (IAAF) delegation will assessits eligibility for classification as a BronzeLabel event.“We offer the highest purse for a South Af-

rican standard marathon, with total prizemoney exceeding R1,6 million – a require-ment for IAAF Label accreditation,” saidevent ambassador ElanaMeyer, an Olympicmedallist and repeat record-holder in long-distance running.“This is largely due to the vested interest

of financial services group Sanlam, whichhas enabled us to confirm this offer througha naming-rights sponsorship announcedearly July,” Meyer added.

Global stageSanlamBrandCEOYegsRamiah saidSan-

lam was pleased to sponsor the event whichthey hope will put Cape Town and our conti-nent on the global stage alongside famousmarathon cities such as Boston, New York,Tokyo and London.“What resonates with us as a company

that has a long and rich history of empower-ment and giving, are the charitable aspectsof the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. We be-lieve the Marathon will have a positive im-pact onSanlamasaglobal brandandwe takepride in creating an opportunity for interna-tional athletes to compete in a global eventon the continent, in particular African ath-

letes. That for us is themutual benefit,” saidRamiah.Several requirements are in place for

IAAF Label accreditation, among them thelegacy of carrying social investment alongwith an enviable line-up of participatingelite international athletes. Sanlam CapeTownMarathon has through its lead charitypartner, Peace and Sport, L‘Organisationpour la Paix par le Sport, confirmed the at-tendance and participation of Champion forPeace Wilson Kipketer, an Olympic silvermedallist and three-time 800m world cham-pion. Under apartnership agreement with Peace andSport, funds raised will be split betweenPeace and Sport’s field programmes in Afri-ca and the South Africa-based organisation,Western Cape Network for CommunityPeace and Development.

Symbolic celebrationThe marathon takes place on the Interna-

tional Day of Peace, 21 September.Along with Peace and Sport, the mara-

thon’s second charitable partner is Enduro-cad (South African Endurance Academy), anon-profit organisation that gives promis-ing young South African athletes the oppor-tunity to train for and participate in long-distance endurance running.“Supporting Kipketer’s role is our con-

firmed line-up of international athletes. Weare proud to announce the participation ofthe esteemed Ethiopian long-distance run-ner Goitom Teseme, Kenyan Willy KiborKoitile and fellow countryman JosphatKamzee Jepkopol,” says Meyer.“Not only does this solidify our ability to

provide aworld-classAfrican experience forelite international marathon runners, but italso sets the precedent for South Africanmarathon runners to compete in an elitefield – something not yet available in thecountry.”This year’s scenic race through the city is

seen as the country’s national champion-ship event for marathon runners, settingseveral benchmarks seen nowhere else inthe country.
