"Natural", "green" and "sustainable" are three of the hottest industry tenns today - yet they are also some of the most controversial for cosmetic formu lators. . ..

As the leaves begin to wither this fall, so apparently has my ability to think of new things to say. I love fall but I hate writer's block! Hopefully the following text won't be Incredibly boring; fortunately there are plenty of upcoming events to cover!

Right now and through October 15th we are accepting applications for our annual Midwest Chapter SCholarship. A total of six scholarships will be awarded this year, Including those specially reserved for relatives of MWSCC members. this is our way of giving back to our community and our members. We had a very strong field of candidates last year, but Individual chances are still very high. Don 't miss out on your chance to receive one of these $1 ,000 scholarships.

Also In October we'll be having our electton for Chapter and National Officers. This year our chapter will be fllllng the offices of Chair-Elect. Treasurer-Elect and Secretary. The secretary race this year Is hotly contested, so be sure to get those ballots In early (and often, In the Chicago tradition!) There are also a number of hot races for national offices so don't forget to vote In that election as well. And be sure to not send your national ballots to our chapter and vice versa (thiS actually happens at least once every year).

To wrap up October we'll have our annual Technical Symposium. This year's theme Is MNatural? Green? Sustainable? Fact versus Fiction from a Formulator's Perspective." Rather than having yet another forum for folks to pitch their latest greenwashed offerings, we're going to be diving deep into what these buzzwords realty mean and exploring many of the contradictions and challenges facing suppliers and formulators tOday in this fast evolving field. We have another expert panel of speakers lined up to give you the latest Information covering the subject In detail.

Finally, some early words on our next regular meeting: I want to make special note that we've added a very special feature to our November Officer Installation and Awards Night. This year we're collecting toys for Toys for Tots. Be sure to check out the details In this newsletter. We're also excited to have a very special talk In November. I won't say too much, but it may Involve Juggling and/or ukulele playing ...

Well, I guess that's it! I don't know why I worry about writing this column - it writes itself with all the great events our committees plan and keep running. At least I think they're great. What do you all think? It's through your feedback that we keep improving our events. Drop me a li ne and let me know what would make our chapter even better for you.

Don't forg et to visit our webs ite regularly, particularly the events page so that you can get full details on all our upcoming events and chapter news. Finally, remember I'm avai lable any time at [email protected]

Green? Sustainable? Fact versus Fiction from a Formulator's Perspective

Tuesday, October 27th at the Westin Chicago Northwest 8:00 am Check In and Continental Breakfast 8:45 am Program Begins 3:15 pm Program Ends

"Natural", "green" and "sustainable" are three of the hottest industry terms today - yet they are also some of the most controversial for cosmetic formulators. This years symposium approaches these terms from a formulator's perspective for "Fact versus Fiction." We will not rehash the paraben controversy nor portray "Naturals" in terms of botanicals used strictly for label claims. What we will do is tie these trends together to address what the consumer (and our marketers) really expect - and how to navigate the various definitions, standards and approaches related to the "Green" movement.

We will continue to update our website with speaker/topic information. but already we know our symposium will:

Start with an overview of the drivers, trends and challenges related to "Green" by an expert to be announced. Lead into a session focusing on the perspective of the ingredient supplier, specifically surfactants. This session includes experts from Cognis, Croda, Rhodia and Stepan - followed by a joint panel Q&A session .. The speakers will address such questions as:

What criteria do suppliers use when considering "green" or "natural" Ingredients?

What tools and resources do suppliers offer cosmetic chemists for ingredient selection when considering "green" or "natural"?

What part does sustainabllity play? How are suppliers meeting this challenge In products. processes, packaging, and transport?

After a delicious lunch, we w ill reconvene with our afternoon session conSisting of:

Julie Gevrenov, Environmental Engineer with EPA Region 5 Materials Management, speaking about Personal Care Packaging. She will address how to balance package functionality with package sustainability.

Steve Schnittger, Estee Lauder's Executive Director for Microbiology Research & Development, speaking about the risks associated with working under the "natural" umbrella with a primary focus on preservation. A potential addit ional session is TBD.

Registration, company sponsorship and additional information can be found at www.mjdwestscc.org . In recognition of the challenging economy, we are keeping our price point the same as last year. $105 for SCC members and $1 20 for non-members who register prior to October 9. The registration includes continental breakfast, print program, full buffet lunch in addition to the all we'll learn from our expert speakers. The first 10 paid registrants will be automaticalty entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card, and there is another drawing for a $50 gift card eligible to all registrants who submit their key challenge(s) related to green, natural and sustainable.

MWSCC to Participate in ACS Chemistry Day

American Chemical Society will be holding their Chemistry Day event at DePaul University in their new Chemistry building on Saturday, October 24111• The theme will be ~Chemistry-It's Elementall"

The elements are the basis of the entire universe and of life on Earth. The elements are an important part of everyday life. They compose the graphite in pencils, the tungsten in light bulbs, neon lights, copper for cooling applications, the sodium in table salt-the list literally never ends! The year 2009 is the 140th anniversary of Mendeleev's Periodic Table of the Elements, and is a wonderful opportunity to investigate and appreciate the discovery and use of the elements in every aspect of our lives.

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists will have a table at the event to demonstrate some principles of chemistry used in the manufacture of personal care products. If interested in

volunteering, children are welcome, please contact Chris Daraska at christine,daraska@evonjk,com or 630-548-4632.

Midwest SCC to hold Toys for Tots Toy Drive at November Chapter Meeting

This year, our Chapter has voted to support a "Toys for Tots" toy Drive at our most attended annual meeting, the November chapter meeting. The mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation's most valuable resources - our children and to unite all members of local communities in a common cause. We would like to join in with helping this cause, which several other Chapters have contributed to in the past years.

If you would like to contribute, please bring one or more unwrapped toys to the November Chapter meeting at Cafe la Cave on November 10th. To assist you or if you would like to contribute a toy but may not have the time to go out of your way to pick up any toys, there is a shopping center with a Target store on Manheim road right by the restaurant. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please go to http://www,toysfortots,ora/ to arrange to make a donation.

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation was awarded Charity Navigator's highest 4-Star rating for sound fiscal management (2005-2008). Their average program to support Service expense ratio: (2000-2008) is 97% program to 3% support. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation has met ali 20 standards established by the Better Business Bureau WiseGiving Alliance.
