1 How do user rights work? SIMATIC PCS 7 makes operation secure by means of assigning user rights to users that log on to the system before they can monitor and operate the process.

Levels of user rights

SIMATIC PCS 7 supports the following user rights within the scope of the SIMATIC PCS 7 Operator System (OS).

Area and Station (computer) dependent user rights

The user rights are assigned to individual users or groups of users and can be configured different per process area and operator station.

Within the SIMATIC PCS 7 operator system, process graphics and Tags belong to process areas, the rights of a user within a process area are applicable to all graphics and Tags that are assigned to the process area.

You can also revoke access to specific process areas their process graphics and any Tag that belongs to that process area.

Groups and Users

To make configuration easier and help avoid mistakes, the SIMATIC PCS 7 OS editor “User Administrator” supports Groups and Users. Users must always be member of a Group.

The group configuration can be inherited into a newly created User, but a User can always have a different configuration compared to the group it is member of.

There is an option to manage Usernames and Passwords in Windows and inherit them into the SIMATIC PCS 7 OS. We recommend that method and explain how it works in the next paragraph.

1.1 Where to manage Usernames and Passwords

The standard software function SIMATIC Logon (included in SIMATIC PCS 7 deliverable without a need for a license), offers the possibility to use Usernames and Passwords managed in the Windows operating system environment. The benefits of managing Usernames and Passwords in Windows are:

· Manage Usernames and passwords in one place (for Domain and Workgroup configurations)

· Leverage the Windows password hardening and renewal policies

· Synchronize the SIMATIC PCS 7 OS users with the business environment, apply business user administration rules to the process control environment (e.g. blocking users that should have no access anymore with one action)

If SIMATIC Logon is used to manage Usernames and Passwords then the SIMATIC PCS 7 OS “User Administration” will ignore users that are configured within its environment and apply User rights based on a match between Windows Group membership and that Group being known in the SIMATIC PCS 7 OS. This implies that it is required to create Process Control related groups in the Windows environment that match Groups that are required in the process control environment. The number of groups that needs to be created depends on the granularity of User rights distribution you want to achieve (e.g. you would create levels like Operators, Engineers, Supervisors, but also levels like Operators_Reactors and Operators_Packaging).

If the Usernames and Passwords are managed in SIMATIC PCS 7 OS then you must create each individual user on each OS Client. This is a single step activity, open the User Administrator and perform the task.

Adding a new user

There are two possibilities for adding a new user depended on whether single OS Clients can be deactivated or not.

1. Without de-activating the OS Clients To this the new user must be added on all OS Clients and in addition in all offline OS Client projects on the Engineering System (ES).

2. With de-activating the OS Clients To this the new user must be added in all OS Client projects on the Engineering System (ES) and the OS Client projects must be downloaded again, which can only occur by de-activating the runtime OS Client project.

When Usernames and Passwords are managed in the OS client project, the workflow is as follows:

· Add/modify/delete Users in the User Administration of the OS Client project(s) on the ES

· Add/modify/delete Users in the User Administration of the OS Client project(s) on the runtime Operator Systems

· Download the OS Client project(s) from the ES to the runtime Operator System(s)

1.3 User rights workflow for SIMATIC PCS 7 OS combined with Windows

If the Usernames and Passwords are managed in Windows then you must meet the following prerequisites:

· Install SIMATIC Logon on each OS Computer, this includes the ES.

· Identify an existing or configure a new User in Windows and assign that user to the “Logon_Administrator” Group in Windows, this user will be allowed to make changes to settings in SIMATIC Logon itself.

· Create Groups in Windows User Administration (e.g. Operators, Engineers, Supervisors).

· Create identical Groups as in Windows User Administration on the OS Server and OS Clients “User Administration” on the ES and in the OS runtime. Assign User rights to the Groups.

· Check the box “SIMATIC Logon” in the OS “User Administration” in all OS; you can only check/uncheck this box while the OS project is de-activated.

If your Computers are part of a domain, then you will manage the Usernames and Passwords in the domain. Skip the next step.

If your Computers are in a Workgroup, then you must decide if you want to manage the Usernames and Passwords on one Computer or if you want to manage the Usernames and Passwords on each Computer individually. Look in the table below what the consequences are of that choice

To add/modify/delete Users in Windows do the following

· Open the Windows User Administration (check Windows documentation if you want to learn how to do this)

– If your Computers are part of a domain you will manage Users in the domain User Administration.

– If your Computers are part of a Workgroup then you will manage Users on each Computer or once on the dedicated Computer for managing Usernames and Passwords.

– If you decide to manage Usernames and Passwords on each Computer then you must repeat the steps below for each of these Computers.

· Create Groups that have an exact name match with the Groups you created in the .OS project(s).

· Create Users, if desired, revoke all Group memberships that the User gets by default, and assign Group membership to one or more Groups that are known both in the Windows User Administration and in the OS “User Administration”.

NOTE Do not create the Users in the OS projects; defining them in the Windows User Administration is sufficient.

1.4 User rights workflow for PCS 7 OS Web Option

Web Client users have to authenticate themselves at the OS Web Server. The configuration of the web users, respectively of SIMATIC Logon is done on the OS Web Server, similar to the normal user configuration.

You can carry out additionally the following adjustments for all web users:

· Display language on the Web Client

· Different start pictures

· Additional user right “Web Access – Monitoring only”

1.5 User rights applied to tags

Once the users have been created they will be assigned the corresponding user Rights every time they log in to a OS runtime on a specific Computer.

Access and ability to operate in a process area has been defined in the OS “User Administration”, if a User has access to a process area, then the scope of his/her ability to operate is defined by specific rights that have been granted to that user.

The rights that have been granted must match the rights that are required for individual actions in the Faceplate of a Tag within the process area.

Note that each user may have different rights depending on the process area he navigates to and that a Tag can demand unique rights for a specific action. However, the viewing of process tag parameters within an authorized plant area is possible anytime.

This means that a user may be able to change an Alarm Limit of a specific measurement while not being able to make changes to Alarm Limits on other measurements.

In Appendix 3 of this document you will find a list of all SIMATIC PCS 7 APL function Blocks, their inputs that can be modified by an Operator and the User Rights required to operate.

1.6 User rights mechanism

For operation in a Faceplate there are three levels of User Rights that are relevant, these three levels are defined in “levels”. The levels are numbered 1, 2 and 3.

The default User Rights that are assigned to each slot are:

Customization of User Rights in a Faceplate

You have three options for customization of User Rights in a Faceplate:

1. Assign a different User Right to a specific level (e.g. assign 1100 to level 2)

– This does not require changing the Faceplate.

– This can be done on an instance specific basis.

– This is done by means of a property of the symbol from where the Faceplate is being opened.

– This can be bypassed (less security if you assigned a higher User right) if the tag Faceplate is being opened from the Tag Directory (selection in the button bar).

2. Change the Faceplate and assign a different level to a specific operation

– Each graphical object that can be operated on in a Faceplate has properties, of which one is the “OperationLevel”, you can change this property to another value, thus changing the required User right to change the value represented by the graphical object.

– This will result in a change to all tags of the type that the Faceplate is defined for (e.g. all MonAnL type tags).

3. Copy the Faceplate to create a new version and, if desired, copy and rename the Function Block in the Controller and make a modification like done under #2, this is the most complicated modification, in essence you are creating a complete new Function Block and Faceplate by copying an existing Function Block and Faceplate.

User Rights adjusted from the symbol

The symbol, from which the Faceplate is being called, can be configured to define a different User Right for each of the three levels.

Each symbol has three properties: “OperationLevel1_backup”, “OperationLevel2_backup”, “OperationLevel3_backup” that have a User Right assigned to them. You can assign a different User Right which will inherit into the Faceplate.
