It will discuss the range of voice management for moderate to severe dysphonia from evaluation/ assessment, treatment, and patient education. Speakers: Daniel Phillips, EdD, CCC-SLP & Will Boswell, CCC- SLP Learners’ Objectives: The learner will: 1) Discuss voice therapy models and techniques. 2) Review video of normal and abnormal glottal approximation during voice production. 3) Understand how vocal hypofunction may lead to hyperfunction. 4) Discuss patient education strategies. 5) Develop management programs to minimize dysphonia and maximize the target voice considering motor learning principles. 6) Match the best exercise for the specific voice disorders. 7) Understand and use conversational speech/voice training techniques. Overview of Surgical Intervention for Head & Neck Cancer Course Description: This presentation will discuss surgery and reconstructive processes for treatment of head and neck cancers and the structural impact on speech and swallowing. Speaker: Dr. Benjamin Greene Learners’ Objectives: The learner will: 1) Identify structures involved with common surgeries. 2) Identify the process and safety considerations with reconstructive surgeries Implications of Head & Neck Cancer Treatments on Speech and Swallowing: Course Description: This presentation will discuss various interventions for head and neck cancers including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical procedures focusing on the impact these have on the speech and swallowing mechanisms and function. Intervention strategies and outcome expectations will also be discussed. Speaker: Duane Trahan, MS, CCC-SLP Learners’ Objectives: The learner will: 1) Identify 3 implications radiation therapy has on speech & swallowing. 2) Identify structural changes and impact on speech and swallowing associated with common surgical intervention. 3) Identify intervention strategies appropriate for various surgical interventions Augmentative & Alternative Communication Course Description: This presentation will discuss the evaluation, processes, and software options on dedicated and non-dedicated Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices (AAC) for adults with expressive language impairments. Speaker: Raven Dawson Learning Objectives: The learner will: 1) Describe the 5 steps of the AAC evaluation process. 2) Overview of the most frequently used AAC software. 3) Differentiate among software based upon population and diagnosis. Speech Therapy and Laryngectomy Patients: Course Description: This presentation will discuss anatomical and physiological changes regarding communication and swallowing following total laryngectomy procedure. This includes various communication options such as tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (education, care, training), electrolarynx, AAC options; as well as pulmonary health and other living aids. Speakers: Duane Trahan, MS, CCC-SLP & Caitlin Stone, MCD, CCC-SLP Learners’ Objectives: The learner will: 1) Identify implications on anatomical changes in relation to speech, swallowing, and pulmonary health following a total laryngectomy. 2) Identify evaluation and intervention strategies for various communication options following laryngectomy. 3) Identify and understand function of various daily living aids employed by laryngectomy patients. Dysphagia related to Head & Neck Cancer Treatment: Case Studies Course Description: This presentation will utilize images and video from various examination tools (endoscopy, stroboscopy, fluoroscopy) with discussion on structural and functional implications of head & neck cancer treatments with emphasis on evaluation and intervention for dysphagia. The learner will: 1) Identify appropriate treatment techniques for swallowing related to patients following head and neck cancer treatments. 2) Identify structural changes affecting swallowing in head and neck cancer treatment patients . Speaker: Duane Trahan, MS, CCC-SLP Guest Speakers and Bios Daniel Phillips, Ed.D., CCC-SLP: Speech Pathologist and co- director of the UAB Voice Center at The Kirklin Clinic. He has worked directly with ENTs evaluating and treating individuals with voice disorders in the Birmingham area over 20 years. His interests include voice disorders related to vocal hyperfunction and over use, the aging voice (presbyphonia), Parkinson’s disease, patient education and training graduate students in Communication Disorders. He believes that a team approach to managing voice disorders is the most effective and efficient method. He is LSVT certified. Phillips has served as President of the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama and the state licensing board (ABESPA). Before coming to UAB, he was an Associate Professor at Auburn University.
