DESCRIPTION

Fifteen past members of the University of California's Board of Regents were key executives or owners of oil companies. Some companies were very large predecessors of today's oil majors, while others were obscure small oil producers. The two most influential Regent oilmen were Edwin Pauley and Samuel Mosher. Pauley owned multiple oil companies and became one of the wealthiest men in America before World War II. Pauley was a reactionary conservative who supported Ronald Reagan's rise to the office of Governor and later President of the United States.Mosher founded the Signal Oil Company and became very wealthy in the mid-20th Century. Mosher was key in founding UC Santa Barbara.
