• Going through a period of relative calm

• Done complete audit of who owns and edits pages

• Editor group still expanding out

• Changes to online resource discovery

• Some extra pages being put on – policy documents, revamped set of staff pages

• Statistics of use show low use so some not best placed to be on the website itself perhaps

• Search using the library home page search box

• Move to another tab and search for the same thing using the google search box you see

• Compare layout, number of results and ordering

• Did snapshot views of use of a large number of our website pages December to May.

• Showed us lot of things which will take into future

• Electronic access is far and away the most popular function

• High use of a number of other focused pages such as opening hours, citation styles, a few subject portals

• Mediocre or very low use of most pages

• A few really low use ones to be culled August

to promote to users for the online library NOT the databases A-Z. The index shows all our main listings, gives access also to subject filtered lists and all our main search tools have links on this page

• Suggestion: take a half hour to navigate down through the tabs and see any areas you have not really noticed before

The current website – e-resource access

• Still work in progress

• A proxy server is being introduced = easier access to resource and same process whether off or on campus

• Still best for people to log into UCD Connect and then hop back to the website listings when they are off campus but will be pretty easy even when off campus when this is finished

• We have done a lot of Web 2.0 experiments at UCD library some worked, some not so much…

• Mashup in branch locator

• Chat

• RSS feeds. Means take page of traditionally web content and offer in form that is PUSHED OUT to users so they do not have to visit the website to see the News. Convenience.

• mp3 audiotour.. Never got a regular podcast

• Blogs most well established

• WIKIs not yet offered that

• David Gallagher and Josh Clark have done the work

• Demonstrated to library staff suggested options

• Those interested have had additions made

• This is still a work in progress

• Have working document we handed out in your pack…

• Proposed 4 things, two that have been taken up are del.icio.us lists of resources instead or as well as Guides to web resources and Google custom search engines

Del.icio.us listings

• Provide list of resources for a subject in this way

• Currently just a link on web page but hope to embed the actual content there in due course

• People can take RSS feed so any new things they find out about

• People can embed links or lists in their own portals, Facebook etc etc

Practical

• Go to the home web page

• Use subject portals box to pick: Applied Social Science, Archaeology, Chemistry.

• Click on the guide to.. Link

• In del.icio.us try different ways to display tags as list or cloud and use to narrow results

Custom search engines

• Create a GCSE

• Provide to it list of the website you want included in the search

• Put it into the subject portal or any other page

• An interface users are familiar with

• Can only include free websites so complements Cross Search@UCD

Practical

• Go to the home web page

• Use subject portals box to pick: Psychology, Classical Studies, Disability studies, Psychology, Geology

• Key into the search box on the page and check the sort of results you get, should be relevant to the portal subject

Where are we going with the website?

• Website too big, hard to navigate, low use areas

• Got to break down into themes and package them in a more portable way

• Can use many DIFFERENT platforms for the various parts, just necessarily all in web pages at all – the concept is a bit outdated

• We need help to see what our future INFORMATION ECOLOGY and Roadmap should be

• We need to think about all our online environments, not the website alone

• Expect a lot of change next 2-3 years with the website becoming a more focused information system

• Having static web pages for our e-resource access is outdated – need to go into a database and Metalib is a likely move – and will take all our other tools into there as well i.e. A-Z serials lists, subject lists of resources, format lists of resources, cross search options. All from one screen

• Note that not many resources can actually be searched by UCD but you can see the layout of this

• Explore the tabs along the top– Quick is the one stop shop search– Find Resource| Category That would be where our subject

and format lists of databases would go and people can also look for a known product

– Find e-Journal. That would be our current Serials Solutions ejournal portal in there

– Metasearch. That would be our current Cross Search service there

Website conclusion

• Make sure you know what is on it

• Use search and A-Z as well as the hierarchy

• The Library website is not going to survive exactly as now

• We need to update our thinking hence a consultancy about online in general

• Content on the current website needs packaging up into portable and reusable elements

• A variety of local and remotely hosted platforms can be used into the future as suitable

Aligning delivery

• You can’t control what happens across the web

• You can align the experience within UCD

The Institutional Repository – IR

Basic points• Libraries’ role has traditionally been helping users

to access information produced by others

• Now got a new role to assist in the scholarly communication process itself

• Takes various forms:– Digitise materials or present digital materials in an

organised way. IVRLA project, NDLR project– Provide a local system to store and publicise the

research output of our researchers. This is the role of the IR: articles, book chapters, books, conference papers published and unpublished, grey literature of all types.

– May move on to images, maps, and a bit one would be datasets

– Also committed to including THESES and perhaps digitising older ones

Basic points

• Advantages to the researchers: – greater visibility of the materials– Will appear in search engines like Google– Higher citation rate– For the university a single standard place

to showcase UCD research, again higher citation rate which accounts for 20% of the rankings in THES world university ranking

– Preservation guaranteed if we get our act together with regard to longer term storage of the materials

Basic points

Basic points• Our local project is part of national project to get

a repository at each university and then a national portal, one stop shop for Irish full text research output

• We are also part of an EU project to get all our economists’ research in and then have that harvested to an EU economics portal of top 500 economics researchers

• The university has a Research Management system which stores profile and publication list for all staff – we are going to merge the 2 systems

• Just taken on a full time manager because with so many strands

Basic points• We are working with our economics early

adopters

• The system uses the dSpace software, modified a bit by an outside company for us

• The system is Open Access – which means that anyone can view the full text research in it, without any subscription required

• We have to check the publisher policies about that with regard to published material before making local copies available – takes a lot of time

PRACTICAL• From the Library website home page choose the

Electronic resources index and then Open Access

• Note this extensive information about Open Access – of which the Repository is a local example of activity

• When ready click on the link on the page to go to the IR Research Online@UCD

• Take a look at the front page – click on about this project for a web page summary of what we are working on right now

• Try the browse by date, author, title. Note the summary screen layout

• Click on the top logo at any time to return to home

• Click on one of the collections to move down to that filtered view – note that recent additions are shown and that users can take an RSS feed and will then get notified of newly added items. They can also set up to do this via e-mail alerts Continued….

PRACTICAL cont.• Go to home and use the Search box now to search for

something (hint an economics topic….)

• As we are still building up the full text, choose a Working Paper from your result set – shown in the summary screen on the right column

• Take a look at the full record. Note that there is a button at the bottom to get more details View more details. One of the extra fields you will see is a link to other online versions such as publisher versions

• Full text if available is in a box at the top – you can click on that to view the full text if you wish

• You have a leaflet about the national project into which our local repository will fit, to create a national full text portal rather like (we hope!) the one in the Netherlands….
