NOTES ON KYLE ANDERSONTRIPLE THREAT: No player in the nation averaged as close to a triple-double as did Kyle Anderson (14.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 6.5 apg). The chart below analyzes the country’s other players who averaged close to a triple-double.

Player School Yr. G PPG RPG APGKyle Anderson UCLA So. 36 14.6 8.8 6.5DeAndre Kane Iowa State Sr. 35 17.1 6.8 5.9Elfrid Payton Louisiana Lafayette Jr. 36 19.2 6.0 5.9Juwan Staten West Virginia Jr. 33 18.1 5.6 5.8Shabazz Napier Connecticut Sr. 40 18.0 5.9 4.9Kyle Collinsworth BYU So. 34 14.0 8.2 4.7

• Anderson was the only player in the country averaging at least 10.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 6.0 apg. He was the only player to rank in the top five in rebounds, assists and steals and be among the top 15 scorers not only in the Pac-12 Conference, but in any of the BCS conferences (AAC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC).

• Kyle Anderson was named as one of 15 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award and for the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year Trophy. In addition, he was listed as one of six finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, presented annually by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame to the nation’s top point guard.

• Kyle Anderson became the first college player (NCAA Division I) to have logged at least 500 points, 300 rebounds and 200 assists since at least 1996-97. He became the only Pac-12 player to tally at least 200 rebounds and 200 assists in the same season. Anderson finished the 2013-14 year with 527 points, 315 rebounds and 233 assists.

• Kyle Anderson (14.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 6.5 apg) became UCLA’s first player to average at least 10.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg and 5.0 apg since Bill Walton finished his senior season (1973-74) with 19.3 ppg, 14.7 rpg and 5.5 apg. Anderson and Walton are two of UCLA’s four players, on record, to have registered a triple-double while at UCLA.

• As a freshman in 2012-13, Kyle Anderson became the first Pac-12 player since Bill Walton in 1973-74 to have tallied at least 300 rebounds and 100 assists in the same season. In 2012-13, Anderson finished with 302 rebounds and 122 assists (Walton had 398 rebounds and 148 assists as a senior in 1973-74).

MAKING IMPROVEMENTS: As a sophomore, Kyle Anderson showed significant improvement in several major statistical categories. His overall shooting percentage increased by 6.4 percent (.416 to .480) while his three-point field goal percentage improved by 27.2 percent (.211 to .483).

TRIPLE-DOUBLES: Kyle Anderson became the fourth player on record in UCLA history to register a triple-double (13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists) in UCLA’s 81-70 win over Morehead State (Nov. 22, 2013). That marked UCLA’s first triple-double since Dec. 18, 1995 (Toby Bailey versus Stephen F. Austin). Since UCLA consistently tracked assists beginning in 1971-72, the Bruins have had four triple-doubles.

FROM 3-POINT RANGE: Kyle Anderson made 28 of 58 three-point attempts (48.3 percent), a strong increase over his freshman year totals (8-for-28, 21.1 percent). Anderson shot a perfect 5-for-5 from long range in UCLA’s 74-69 loss to Utah on Jan. 18. That marked UCLA’s first “perfect” effort from three-point range with a minimum of five attempts since Ray Young went 5-for-5 from downtown on Feb. 22, 2003, in UCLA’s 93-84 loss to Stanford.

HISTORIC: For the second straight season, Kyle Anderson became UCLA’s first player since Charles O’Bannon (1994-95) to log at least 200 rebounds and 100 assists in one season. O’Bannon finished his sophomore year with 201 rebounds and 110 assists (Anderson had 302 rebounds and 122 assists in 2012-13). Since UCLA officially recorded assists (1971-72), Anderson, O’Bannon and Bill Walton are UCLA’s only players to have accomplished that feat.

NOTES ON JORDAN ADAMS• Jordan Adams averaged 16.4 points per game in two seasons at UCLA (69 games). Adams, a sophomore from Atlanta, led the Bruins with 17.4 points per game and recorded a team-best 83.6 free throw percentage (158/189). He scored at least 20 points in a team-leading 13 games during the 2013-14 season.

• Adams’ 3-pointer with 45 seconds to play against Arizona in the Pac-12 title game (March 15, 2014) snapped a 68-68 tie and gave the Bruins the lead for good. He averaged 11.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg in three tournament games.

• Adams was named a first-team All-Pac-12 selection at the conclusion of the regular season. As a freshman in 2012-13, he earned honorable mention All-Freshman Team accolades after having averaged 15.3 points per game, the second-highest total on the team behind then-freshman Shabazz Muhammmad.

• Adams set UCLA’s single-season steals record (95 in 2013-14) after having registered a conference-leading 73 steals as a freshman in 2012-13 (the sixth-highest single-season total in school history). Adams’ 168 career steals in two seasons rank eighth on the Bruins’ all-time steals list. The sophomore guard averaged 2.43 career steals per game, the highest average in program history (minimum 60 games played).

• Adams competed in his first career NCAA Tournament in 2014. As a freshman in 2012-13, Adams broke his left foot in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals (66-64 win against Arizona) and was forced to miss the remainder of the season. Adams underwent surgery and was fully recovered in time for the 2013-14 season.

• UCLA went 12-1 in games in which Adams scored at least 20 points. He scored 30 points in the team’s 81-70 win against Morehead State (Nov. 22) and had a career-high 31 points in the Bruins’ 91-82 victory at Washington (March 7), connecting on 11 of 15 shots (73.3 percent) against the Huskies.

• Adams recorded each of his three career double-doubles this season. He finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the Bruins’ 80-71 loss at Missouri (Dec. 7). He logged 12 points and 11 rebounds in a 79-75 loss to No. 1-ranked Arizona (Jan. 9) and had 14 points and 13 rebounds in the team’s 69-56 win at Colorado (Jan. 16).

PROTECTING THE BALLUCLA finished the 2013-14 season leading all Pac-12 teams in assists per game (17.2), steals per game (9.2), assist turnover ratio (1.7) and turnover margin (+4.1). UCLA committed the third-fewest turnovers per game (10.24) of any Pac-12 team. UCLA’s defense forced the highest average of turnovers among Pac-12 teams (14.3). Kyle Anderson (233 assists, 110 turnovers) accounted for 36.6 percent of UCLA’s total assists.

WELL ASSISTED: Six of UCLA’s eight regular contributors had more assists than turovers. For players who averaged at least 1.5 apg, Kyle Anderson led the team with a 2.12 assist turnover ratio. Bryce Alford, Travis Wear, Norman Powell, Jordan Adams and Zach LaVine have each compiled assist turnover ratios of 1.5 or better.

POWELL’S PRODUCTIONNorman Powell concluded the season as UCLA’s third-leading scorer, averaging 11.4 points per game. Powell’s 53.3 field goal percentage ranked eighth among Pac-12 players. The junior guard from San Diego scored in double figures in 23 games and helped lead UCLA to a 20-3 record in those contests. Powell has played in more games in a UCLA uniform (105) than any other Bruins’ player from the 2013-14 roster.

HIGH OCTANEThe Bruins averaged 81.2 points in 37 games, the program’s highest per game offensive output in any season since averaging 83.1 points per game during the 1997-98 campaign. Earlier during the season, UCLA compiled a seven-game streak of at least 80 points scored in victories. That feat had not been accomplished since the Bruins’ 1994-95 NCAA championship season (streak ran from Feb. 22 through March 17, 1995).

TOP MARKS: The Bruins’ capped their 2013-14 campaign having posted the country’s No. 11-best scoring output, averaging 81.2 points per game (second-best behind Oregon’s 81.9 ppg in the Pac-12 Conference).

MAKING STRIDESAfter having averaged just 6.3 minutes per game as a freshman last season, Tony Parker averaged 6.9 points and 4.4 rebounds in 17.2 minutes per game in 2013-14. The sophomore from Atlanta registered a team-leading 60.2 field goal percentage (109/181) after having made 33 of 61 shots (54.1 percent) in 2012-13. Parker scored at least 10 points in 10 games and grabbed at least 10 rebounds in three games. He registered his first career double-double in a non-conference win over Oakland, totaling 21 points and 12 rebounds (Nov. 12, 2013).

HAILING FROM SAN DIEGONorman Powell has played in more games (105) in a UCLA uniform than any other player on the Bruins’ 2013-14 roster. Powell’s appearance in the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal against Oregon (March 13) marked his 100th career game with the Bruins. The native of San Diego has made 47 career starts and has played in all 105 games since the start of the 2011-12 season. Powell shot 78.0 percent from the free throw line (96/123), making twice as many free throws than he had in the previous two years combined (entered the year having made 36 of 55).

SUCCESS AT THE LINETravis Wear made 25 of 30 free throw attempts (83.3 percent), registering a career 79.8 percentage (182/228), including one season played at North Carolina. Travis’ twin brother David, also a senior forward on the team, had a streak of 19 consecutive free throws made from Nov. 28, 2013 through Feb. 8, 2014. David Wear concluded his senior season having made 33 of 41 free throw attempts, converting at a 80.5 percent rate.

BENCH PERFORMANCESUCLA’s Zach LaVine, Bryce Alford and Tony Parker played major roles off the bench. The Bruins’ bench accounted for 27.5 percent of UCLA’s scoring (827/3003). Alford and LaVine finished among the top three in UCLA’s all-time freshman three-point percentage list (miminum 1.0 three-pointers made per games played). Alford’s 102 assists were the most by any Pac-12 player who primarily played off the bench (averaging fewer than 25.0 minutes per game).

PRESEASON PROJECTIONSUCLA was tabbed second out of 12 teams in the annual Pac-12 preseason media poll, as announced at Pac-12 Media Day in San Francisco on Oct. 17. Arizona was picked to finish first in the conference, collecting 21 of 23 first-place votes. UCLA and Colorado each secured one first-place vote, finishing second and third, respectively. Last season, UCLA was picked to finish second (behind Arizona) and won the conference’s regular-season crown. The Bruins have won the Pac-12 regular-season title in four of the last eight seasons and last won the Pac-12 Tournament in March 2008.

PREDICTIONS: Members of the media have correctly picked the conference’s regular-season winner 12 times in 21 tries. Arizona has correctly been selected in seven of the previous 12 times it has been slated to win the league crown.

FREE THROW SHOOTERJordan Adams made 83.9 percent of his free throws over his career (287/342) and made 158 of 189 attempts as a sophomore (83.6 pct in 36 games). His 83.6 percent rate in 2013-14 ranked fourth-highest in the conference, while his 84.3 percentage as a freshman in 2012-13 ranked third in the Pac-12. In the first eight games of his freshman campaign, Adams logged a streak of 33 consecutive free throws made (10 shy of UCLA’s record of 43, Darren Collison in 2008-09). He made 16 of 16 free throws in UCLA’s second game of the 2012-13 season.

MAKING HISTORY: Prior to Adams’ 16-for-16 FT effort (11/13/12), no UCLA player had made 16 FTs in one game since Reggie Miller (17-for-17, vs. Arizona State, 1/16/86). Other recent top efforts have come from Darren Collison (13-for-13, vs. Oregon State, 1/26/08) and Arron Afflalo (13-for-13, vs. Arizona, 2/4/06).

CONFERENCE RANK: Adams’ 16-for-16 FT effort trails the Pac-12 record – John Block of USC made 21 of 21 free throws against Washington (2/1/66). His 16-for-16 effort is the best among Pac-12 players since Jan. 17, 2009 (Washington State’s Taylor Rochestie went 16-for-16 vs. Stanford in Pullman, Wash.).

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: As a senior in high school (2011-12) at Oak Hill Academy, Adams made 34 straight free throws during the first half of the season (over the course of 12 games), setting a school record for consecutive free throws made. His team finished the season with a 44-0 record.

UCLA Signs Three Standouts to National Letters of Intent

The UCLA basketball program received signed National Letters of Intent from high school seniors Kevon Looney, Thomas Welsh and Gyorgy Goloman during the early signing period, which concluded Nov. 20, 2013.

Looney, Welsh and Goloman will enroll at UCLA in the fall of 2014 and begin their freshman seasons in 2014-15.

“We absolutely needed size with this class,” Alford said. “Kevon is one of the best players in the country. He is extremely skilled and versatile. Most importantly, he’s a winner. To get Thomas, a local seven-footer, to help anchor us inside is tremendous. He has been extremely well coached and gets better every time we see him.

“With Gyorgy, we love his ability to run the floor. He is one of the best passing big men we have seen in years. This is a tremendous start to the 2014 class, and we are excited to add these great individuals to the Bruin family.”

Looney is ranked the No. 11 player in his class, nationally, by ESPN.com. The 6-foot-9 forward from Hamilton High School averaged 26.1 points, 12.4 rebounds and 7.0 blocks per game as a junior in 2012-13. He was invited to the 2013-14 USA Basketball Developmental National Team Mini-Camp.

Welsh has been ranked the No. 52 player in the nation by Rivals.com and is listed No. 90, nationally, in ESPN’s list of top 100 high school seniors. Currently in his third season at Loyola High School of Los Angeles, Welsh averaged 12.6 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.8 blocks as a junior in 2012-13.

Goloman entered his first year at The Sagemont School in Westmont, Fla., this fall after having moved from Hungary. He averaged 15.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game competing for Hungary at the 2013 European U18 Championships.
