FOREWORD
Postgraduate programmes at the University
of Cape Town play a vital role in
developing skills necessary for success in a knowledge-driven economy, both locally
and internationally. Our postgraduate
programmes span the basic disciplines as well as a range of applied and professional
areas in Commerce, Engineering and the
Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law and Science. Our
commitment to being a high quality
research-led university means that our postgraduate students have the opportunity
to work with academics who are making
important contributions to new knowledge via their on-going research and professional
activities.
This booklet provides information on
potential sources of financial support for
postgraduate students. There are various categories of financial assistance
administered by the University and many
other agencies and donors. This booklet also provides information on a range of
postdoctoral fellowships. The opportunity
of a postdoctoral fellowship, following the successful completion of a doctoral degree,
is a useful career experience allowing a
researcher to develop further skills in knowledge creation and dissemination.
We hope that this booklet will be a useful resource in identifying potential bursaries
and scholarships. We wish you a successful
and enjoyable postgraduate and postdoctoral experience at the University of
Cape Town.
Professor Danie Visser
Deputy Vice-Chancellor
INTRODUCTION
This Booklet is intended as a guide for
students who will register for full-time Honours, Master’s or Doctoral study and
who require financial assistance, and for
Doctoral graduates seeking financial support for postdoctoral research. The
financing of postgraduate study invariably
takes the form of a combination of
scholarships or bursaries, part-time
employment within or outside the university, student loans, personal savings
and assistance from families.
The university aims to provide financial assistance that will contribute towards the
costs of tuition and accommodation. This
goal requires more money than the university has available. It is therefore vital
that students needing assistance approach
as many sources as possible in addition to applying to UCT.
All awards offered by the university are
limited to South African citizens and
permanent residents, with the exception
of the UCT Research Associateships, the
International and Refugee Students'
Scholarships, and the Travel grants.
The University administered awards
appearing in this booklet are not
available for the 4th year of Bachelor
degrees Advanced or Postgraduate
Diplomas, the HDE or the LLB and
BArch degrees. Students wishing to
follow these courses are referred to
booklet 13 "Financial Assistance for
Undergraduate Study" issued by the
Undergraduate Student Financial Aid
office.
Applying for Funding
The primary and most substantial form of assistance for students who undertake
Honours, Master’s and Doctoral study on a
full-time basis are the awards granted on the basis of academic performance.
It is important that students and prospective postdoctoral research fellows applying for
funding comply with the requirements and
submit applications on time and by the specific closing date. Late and incomplete
applications will be disqualified.
Merit Awards
The major sources of merit-based awards
are the two state-funded Research
Councils. (See Section 1). Students
requiring UCT merit awards must apply, in
the first instance, to the NRF or MRC.
UCT Research Scholarships are intended
for students who are eligible for NRF
(SET), NRF (SSH) and MRC bursaries but are unsuccessful with their applications. An
application form for this category of award
is not required (See Section 2).
Research Associateships are awarded to the
most outstanding Master’s and Doctoral
students on the basis of nomination by their Departments. (See Section 2.)
UCT also offers scholarships each
December to graduating students who have
performed exceptionally well at UCT.
Recipients are identified by the university and an application form for this category of
award is not required. (See Section 7.)
Scholarships and bursaries funded from a variety of sources are available. These may
be awarded to Heads of Departments or
supervisors to grant to students working on specific projects or programmes.
Candidates should enquire as to the availability of such awards by consulting
their Heads or Supervisors.
Bursaries Awarded on Basis of
Financial Need
It is important to note that funding at the postgraduate level is not the same as the
FINANCIAL AID available for
undergraduate study. Full-cost financial aid packages are not available to
postgraduate students. Postgraduate
students are therefore required to attempt to secure funds from as many external sources
as possible.
Bursaries offered by UCT for financially
needy students are available only to South
African citizens and permanent residents
and are listed under Section 3.
Despite active steps taken by UCT, it
may prove impossible to support all
needy postgraduate students. All
students assessed as eligible for
assistance in the form of a need-based
bursary must themselves provide some
of their costs. Students applying for
financial assistance will be assessed for
assistance but MUST ensure that they
are able to provide some contribution
towards their studies, via their own
resources, external bursaries or part-
time employment.
Students must note that:
1. Funding is NOT guaranteed
2. The university does not offer
FULL-COST support and
3. The University is not responsible
for the outstanding fee debt of any
student.
It is important to be aware that the
university cannot consider assistance for the cost of dependents. Students must make
arrangements to meet the cost of support of
dependents where applicable.
Section 4 lists awards administered
independently of UCT and enquiries should be directed to the Administrators/Trustees
indicated.
EVERY EFFORT MUST BE MADE TO
SECURE ASSISTANCE FROM
SOURCES EXTERNAL TO UCT.
International and Refugee Students
A limited number of scholarships are
available to non-South African graduates
who are residents of countries other than South Africa. These are awarded on a
competitive basis with emphasis given to
academic merit and to the seniority of candidates.
The scholarships do not provide full-cost
support. All UCT International and
Refugee Students Scholarships are
supplementary. Applying students must
ensure that they have sufficient support
for their studies. The scholarships are
renewable for the duration of the course of study subject to satisfactory progress being
maintained, up to a limit of 1 year at
Honours level; for the 1st and 2nd years of Master’s study, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd
years of Doctoral study. Applications for
funding cannot be processed unless
Applicants apply for admission through the UCT Admissions Office or the Faculty
Office.
Part-time Employment
The regulations governing the NRF/ MRC
bursaries and UCT awards permit some
degree of concurrent part-time employment.
Individuals who are employed full-time are not eligible for UCT funding support.
Demonstratorships, Teaching
Assistantships or Research Assistantships may be offered by your Department and
details should be obtained from your
supervisor or Head of Department. Subject to limitations on remuneration, award-
holders may undertake part-time
employment, provided weekly duties do not exceed 12 hours NRF (SET), 12 hours
NRF (SSH), 9 hours (MRC), 12 hours
(UCT Research Scholarship) or 12 hours (UCT Research Associateships).
Duration of Scholarship and
Bursary Assistance
Research Council bursaries and UCT
awards may be held for:
the first year of the Honours degree only;
the 1st and 2nd year of Master’s study, and
the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of Doctoral study. Renewal of awards for Master’s
and Doctoral study each year is subject to
satisfactory progress and continued evidence of need in the case of need-
based bursaries, and on the availability of
funds. Students must make every effort to complete their studies within these
periods.
It is important to note that funding will not be available beyond the above-mentioned
tenures.
NOTE: STUDENTS STUDYING FOR A
SECOND DEGREE AT THE SAME
LEVEL (e.g. Honours Graduate doing a second Honours Degree) ARE
INELIGIBLE FOR UCT FUNDING.
Applications for renewal and continued
assistance must be submitted annually by
the relevant closing dates. Renewal of
awards is NOT automatic and eligible
students are required to apply for renewal annually.
Application for Admission to Study
and Registration
Applicants for financial assistance who are
not already registered for the degree of
their choice are reminded that they must also apply for admission to the University
and should consult UCT’s Admissions
Office or relevant Faculty Office for the closing dates. Although funding selection
committees consider applicants who may
not yet be registered for study,
bursaries/scholarships that may be offered
can only be claimed by students who have been accepted by the relevant academic
department for the course/programme for
which they applied.
Scholarships for International
Study
The University does not offer scholarships for international study. However the
respective research councils NRF (SET), NRF (SSH) & MRC are a major source of
assistance for overseas study at the
DOCTORAL degree level. Such overseas
awards are made on the basis of academic
excellence and the significance of the
proposed study. Certain overseas universities may offer scholarships or
bursaries to international students, or may
be in a position to offer part-time employment in the form of Assistantships
or Fellowships, which often include a
waiver of academic fees. Students are advised to check with their intended
institutions. Section 6 provides information
on independently administered awards for study at overseas universities.
Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
This Booklet includes a number of
opportunities for Postdoctoral research fellowships at UCT (See Section 5).
However, the majority of opportunities are
offered by independent donors and interested parties are advised to check with
their department Heads and with the
Postgraduate Funding Office regularly.
CONTENTS
In addition to the awards listed, certain other awards exist which are not acceptable in an open
democratic society based on freedom and equality and are therefore not utilised or advertised by the
University of Cape Town.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS AND

University Research Scholarships
Eligible, but unsuccessful candidates for the Research Council bursaries, NRF (SET & SSH) are
eligible for University Research Scholarships. Values are variable.
This undertaking does not apply to candidates who are eligible for support from the NRF (SET &
SSH) who fail to submit a completed application by the university's due date. University Research
Scholarships may not be held concurrently with bursaries from the Research Councils, but may be supplemented, within certain limits, by income from part-time employment and/or other awards.
PLEASE NOTE: These awards are NOT GUARANTEED and depend on availability of funds.
University Research Associateships
Research Associateships for Master’s and Doctoral study are offered by the University. Candidates
do not apply directly for Associateships but may be nominated by Heads of Departments or research Supervisors. Associateships may be held concurrently with standard Research Council

2012 UCT reserves the right to recover any funds
allocated to any student from the
University’s own funding if the student
receives support in excess of the stated
maxima.
4. The University reserves the right to cancel late
and incomplete applications for funding
This ensures that selection processes are fair, and that those students who have complied
with the deadlines and application conditions
compete on the same level.
5. After establishing that they are in line with the
laws of the country, the University will ensure
that the conditions of awards and grants as laid down in bequests or by donors, sponsors or the
University, are adhered to.
The University reserves the right to cancel or withdraw any award made if the recipient of such
an award does not comply with the stated
conditions of the award.
All awards made are governed by conditions
that are approved by the DVC for Research
& Innovation. Such conditions ensure that:
the University remains compliant with
tax regulations/guidelines;
the applications submitted by students in competition for such awards are
assessed using the stated criteria, and
the selection process for all awards is based on set and approved criteria.
The University is legally bound to abide by the conditions of award, which are often
based on bequests or on the instructions of
external donors, such as the NRF.
FUNDING POLICIES 88
No awards will be processed without the
required and approved Conditions of Award
6. The University reserves the right to recover
any monies disbursed to any student (including
monies disbursed on behalf of the NRF and MRC), if that individual does not comply with the
conditions of award; make satisfactory progress or
if he/she deregisters without prior notice or reasonable cause. The recovery process is routed
through the University’s Finance Department, via
the Fees Office and the Debtors’ section.
Satisfactory progress and registration for the
degree for which the student is being funded,
are conditions of award. All awards made via the PFO are done so by means of a claim
form, which requires an undertaking from
the student that she/he agrees to comply with the conditions of award.
The NRF and MRC have their own conditions and agreement with similar
repayment clauses, which students must
sign.
Note: The Postgraduate Funding Office
ascertains satisfactory progress through direct communication with the Programme
Convenors and individual student’s
supervisors.
7. Guarantee of funding and outstanding fee
debts The University does not guarantee funding to any
student/applicant. The University does not at any time undertake to provide full-cost support to any
student/applicant. The University will not be responsible for the
outstanding fee debt of any student.
The University is unable to provide any guarantee that every applicant for financial
aid and funding will receive support.
Similarly, the University is unable to
undertake to offset any debt incurred by the student and/or any balance reflected which is
reflected on that student’s fee-account.
8. Cash Advances (called Allowances)
Only students registered for full-time study at the University of Cape Town, and who have a
offered, pledged or processed award, are eligible
to draw Allowances from the University.
Rules:
Allowances will only be available to students under the following conditions:
1. Where an application has been submitted
by a student and an award offered, but not yet processed. In such cases any allowance
must not exceed the amount owed to the
university in terms of fees or other charges. Normally 50% of such fees or charges are
repaid to the university in the first and then
in the second semester.
2. (i) Where a nomination has been made to
the NRF by a Grant-holder for a renewal of an award in respect of a student who has
made satisfactory progress.
(ii) Where a nomination has been made to the NRF by a Grant-holder for a new award
for a student in good academic standing and who is a South African citizen.
89 FUNDING POLICIES
3. Where applications have been made to
the MRC and the NRF for renewal by
students who are eligible and who have made satisfactory progress, and where
results of such applications have not yet
been released by the NRF. (This recommendation is based on the NRF’s
undertaking to support students for the
prescribed tenures of degree).
4. Where a student requires an advance of
part or the whole of a second instalment of an existing award for good reason (to be
supported by the Course
Convenor/Supervisor and/or the Head of Department and approved by the Director of
the Postgraduate Centre & Funding Office)
and where she/he has made satisfactory academic progress in the first semester
In all cases, such ‘Allowances’ must be
underwritten by the fund-holder via an undertaking on the relevant letter-head and
with the original signature of the fund-
holder.
9. Payment of award on receipt of claim forms. In order to prevent fraud, only claim forms
with original signatures will be accepted.
No photo-copies, scanned forms or electronic signatures are acceptable.
