These are but a few of the long list of com-ments made on Facebook in reaction to an ex-traordinary fund-raising challenge in sup-port of charities.

“It is a flippen nice idea initiated by mydaughter Melissa, with the aim to supportcharities. Our clients’ reactions are simplyjust awesome and we want to thank them fortheir support,” said Tosca Myburgh from Tos-ca Hair & Beauty in Bluewater Bay.

“We are having fun as clients now refer toappointments by asking for a peanut butterblow dry, jam hair dry or toilet paper washand blow dry.”

Tosca explained that the whole idea is tosupport identified charities on a monthly ba-sis through the donation of what might soundlike insignificant items, but which actuallyare necessities.

“Instead of paying for a hair wash or blowdry, we request clients to donate either pea-nut butter, jam or toilet paper. These itemsare then handed over to the identified chari-ty,” said Tosca.

It had a ripple effect as the public startedto donate items other than just what the chal-lenge is about.

Zulyka Scott, fund-raiser at OosterlandYouth Centre, one of the beneficiaries fromthe Tosca Hair & Beauty’s challenge, said itwas a brilliant idea and its repercussion hashad an immense impact on the Centre’s bud-get.

“We often hear people asking, ‘why fund-raising or donate items to Oosterland?’ Well,firstly, it has an enormous savings impact onour tight budget and secondly although it isa non-profit organisation the basic runningcosts, maintenance, salaries of 58 staff mem-bers and having to pay school fees to 14schools which our children attend, are ex-penditures people do not always take into con-sideration,” said Zulyka.

Oosterland wishes to challenge local hairstylists in Despatch and Uitenhage to joinin this fun way of assisting the non-profit or-ganisation on a monthly basis through re-questing their clientele to donate specificitems which will be of benefit to the Centre.

The limited research that has been conductedon environmental management in small andmedium-sized businesses in South Africa hasbeen descriptive in nature, and fails to pro-duce results that can be generalised.

With this in mind, Riyaadh Lillah (28)NMMU Business Management lecturer de-veloped and tested a theoretical model to ex-plain the implementation of environmentalmanagement systems in small and medium-sized businesses.

Lillah said that businesses have been criti-cised for their contribution towards the rateof destruction of the natural environment.

He adopted a quantitative survey method-ology to test the proposed theoretical model.In total, 417 small and medium-sized busi-nesses participated in the survey; 326 of thesewere not implementing an environmentalmanagement system, and 91were implement-

ing such a system.Lillah this week walked across the Nelson

Mandela Metropolitan University’s stage tobe awardedhis doctorate titled “Environmen-tal management systems in South Africansmall and medium-sized businesses”.

Lillah first fell in love with the new trendof greening businesses and sustainability inhis undergraduate studies at NMMU. In linewith the NMMU value of respect for the natu-ral environment, NMMU residences havegradually established a commitment to sus-tainable student housing over the last fewyears.

They embarked on a campaign to make theresidences more eco-friendly with the aim ofcreating sustainable residences where stu-dents can live in harmony with ecologicalprocesses, minimise consumption and waste,and show respect for human dignity andhealth.

Lillahhas played an integral role in this ini-tiative.

After matriculating from Brandwag HighSchool in Uitenhage, Lillah majored in Busi-ness Management and Economics completinghis degree in 2008. He then went on to obtainhis BCom (Hons) in Business Management in2009. A year later, he started working on hismaster’s degree in Business Management,graduating in April 2012.

“Most of my postgraduate research focusedon green issues,” he says.

With a goal of obtaining full professorshipbefore the age of 35, Lillah is enjoying lectur-ing close to 1000 first-year Business Manage-ment students.

“It is my nature to ask questions; so re-search comes naturally. I always ask how re-search can be done more effectively,” he says.

The Uitenhage born and bred academicsays his late father Sulyman pushed him tofurther his studies. Sadlyhis dadpassed awayin 2009 while Lillah was busy with his hon-ours exams. “I am dedicating my PhD to mydad.”

The Prickly Pear Festival is back. Revivedandwith adifferent feel to it, the festivalwasidentified by the Uitenhage Museum Boardas a means of raising funds to assist with themaintenance of the three museums in theUitenhage area.

Dr Katzen, a director of a group medicalpractice in Bloemfontein which dealsmostlywith paediatrics and sports injuries, will ad-dress guests on the topic of “the positive rolethat role models can play in the adolescentyears”.DrKatzen is a formerEP and SA champion

at athletics and alsowas known for outstand-ing skills on the rugby field. Although bornin the heart of the Karoo in Middelburg, he

matriculated at Uitenhage High School andfurthered his studies in Medicine at the Uni-versity of Stellenbosch where he obtainedhisMB.ChB degree. He completed the theorypart of a MSc in Sport Medicine at the Uni-versity of Pretoria and worked at Living-stone Hospital in Port Elizabeth as aMedicalOfficer.He then went into private practice in

Bloemfontein where his involvement in pro-fessional rugby started as team doctor. Thevarious teams he assisted include the FreeState U/19 team, Free State U/21, Free StateVodacom team and Free State Super 14 fran-chise team.In between Dr Katzen was on the medical

panel that arranged the Cricket World Cup

of 2003 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ken-ya. The men’s breakfast will be hosted at theDolphin Indoor Sport Arena in MitchellStreet, Uitenhage on Saturday, April 25th at09:00. Admission is R90 per person which in-cludes a gift and a chance to win a luckydraw.

Six cyclists plan to cover a distance of near-ly 340km in six days between Despatch

and Middelburg with the eventual aim of at-tending the Karoo Mighty Men conference.

“Wewill start our cycling tour on Saturdayat Despatch Superspar following the route toKirkwood, Steytlerville, Klipplaat,Aberdeen,Graaff-Reinet and finally reachingMiddelburg,” said Marius Erasmus, one ofthe Mighty Men Driven by God Cycle Tourmembers.This is the second year that these cyclists

are tackling the gruelling Karoo conditionsen route andasbuild-up to the conferencevis-it communities on their way.“We would like to achieve our higher pur-

pose by serving needy communities on ourway with food, clothing and Christian litera-ture,” said Erasmus.The participating cyclists include Marius

When Riebeek College Girls’ High School heard the dev-astating news of the fire at the Uitenhage SPCA, theysprang into action to help.“The girls brought donations to school and the re-

In a project to help provide personal hygiene to streetchildren, Operation Child Clean-up will be held onSaturday with the aim to provide up to 30 childrenwith a hot shower, clean clothes and lunch.The project is initiated by Ubuntu Community De-

velopment Solutions (UCDS) a non-profit organisa-tionwith the aimof uniting and growing communitiesby sowing seeds of human kindness.“We would like to spoil these children as some of

them might never get an opportunity like this,” saidAngelique Nell from UCDS.“We have requested donations in the form of toilet-

ries, second hand clothes, towels and the assistanceof volunteers as well as volunteer nurses and doctors

to be part of the project.”The project is hosted at the Uitenhage Central

Sports complex and will not be open to the public.“Although only the children and volunteers will be

allowed on the premises, we want to thank the publicfor their support and donations towards the project,”said Nell.It is being held in conjunction with the Uitenhage

The Eatern Province B lawn bowls sidecompeted in the inter-districts competi-tion which was held in Pretoria and cameout top, winning gold in the finals againstJohannesburg Bowls Association.

A total of 20 districts from throughoutSouth Africa participate in this competi-

tion which is held annually with twogames of bowls being played each day ofthe week. Each district has two teams,with Moyra Buchanan from the Uiten-hage Bowling Club as skip (captain) of oneteam and Wilna Gouws from Western Sub-urbs skipping the other team.

This year Uitenhage will playhost to the annual South Afri-canKlawerjasBoardofControltournament which will be heldat the Uitenhage Town Hallfrom April 30th until May 3rd.
