charities at heartProceeds from the Absa KirkwoodWildsfees are ploughed back intothe Sundays River communitythrough tourism promotion andsupport for a number of charitiesand support organisations.
Organisers of the Absa KirkwoodWildsfees handed over R17 000worth of blankets, toys and treats tofive needy crèches in the SundayRiver Valley area includingNeskuikens crèche, Aqua Park EduCare centre, Khanyise crèche, OlieOliphant crèche and Nolukhanyecrèche.
“We don’t get any funding fromgovernment and rely on donationsfrom the public. These toys, pencilsand blankets will really help us of-fer thekids abetter education,” saidSusan Pietersen from Aqua ParkEdu Care centre which caters forapproximately 80 children aged be-tween two and eight years old.
The Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees be-gan 10 years ago and has grown intoone of the most successful commu-nity festivals in the country.
“The Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees isrun as a non-profit organisationand contributes directly to the up-liftment of the local community,”says festival director Jenni Hons-
bein.Proceeds from the festival are al-
so used to support the Kirkwoodtourism office during the year.
Kirkwood Mayor Mbulelo Kebeand Councillor Frans Adams assist-ed with the handovers.
Community worker, Muffy Mill-er also helped in the handovers.Miller opened the first crèche in theLangbos township in 1990 and hasbeen working tirelessly to set upand fund crèches throughout theAddo and Kirkwood area. She is as-sisted by the Mayibuye Develop-ment Trust.
The crèches and care centres re-ceive very little government sup-port, and rely on volunteers andsponsors to look after and educatethe children.
“At one of the crèches, we foundbabies sleeping on cold tiles in ashack. Thanks to Absa, we wereable to provide sponge mattressesfor them. We are humbled to be ableto make a difference in the lives ofthese children who are at risk,”says Honsbein.

Vriende en familie van ’n “vriendelike,lewenslustige” verkoopsman by WilliamsHunt op Uitenhage was Dinsdag verslae oorsy dood in ’n motorfietsongeluk vroeër dieoggend.
Mnr. Stefan Wals (22) van Sunridgepark inPort Elizabeth is omstreeks 07:25 op die toneeldood toe hy teen ’n bakkie gebots het. Die onge-luk het op die Cuyler Manor-pad tussen Des-patch en Uitenhage gebeur.
Wals se rooi-en-wit Yamaha R6-motorfiets iserg beskadig en het ’n diep duik in die agterstedeur aan die bestuurderskant van ’n dub-belkajuit-silwer Mitsubishi Colt-bakkie gelos.
Volgens ao. Marianette Olivier, polisie-woordvoerder, was albei voertuie op pad naUitenhage toe die bakkie na bewering ’n U-draai in die pad gemaak en Wals daarin vas-
gery het. Wals het die afgelope ses maande as’n verkoopsman by Williams Hunt op Uiten-hage gewerk, het mnr. Frikkie Venter,hoofverkoopsman, gesê.
Sy ma, me. Yolande Wals, was te geskok ommet die media te praat, het Venter gesê.
Wals se pa, mnr. Gary Wals, werk in Saoedi-Arabië en is op pad terug na Suid-Afrika.
Wals het Sondag sy 22ste verjaardag gevier.Mnr. Dennis Johannie, die president van
die Christelike Motorfietsklub in die Baai, hetgesê Wals het ’n maand gelede aangedui dathy graag by die motorfietsklub wou aansluit.
“Hy was Sondag saam met ’n groep van onsop ’n uitstappie en hy het dit baie geniet. Toeek die nuus oor sy dood gekry het, het ek grootgeskrik,” het Johannie gesê.
Olivier het gesê die bestuurder van diebakkie en sy twee passasiers is met ligte beser-ings na ’n hospitaal geneem. Geen ander voer-tuie was by die ongeluk betrokke nie.

Bikers did a good jobof home makeover
The Workshop Crew MCC have usedtheir funds raised from their motor-bike rally in 2010 to do two homemakeovers.
The homes are two adjoining semi-detached homes in Haupt Street,Sydenham, Port Elizabeth.
“The Workshop Crew MCC wouldlike to thank the two main sponsorswhich assisted us with this venture.Tiny’s Pub & Grub paid for the bath-room makeovers and Medal Paintsdonated almost all the paint for theproject,” said Rob McOwen, VicePresident of Workshop Crew MCC.
The total cost of the project was in
excess of R45 000.Workshop Crew rally in Jeffreys
Bay is an annual event that in con-junction with a bikers sleepover atthe Thornhill Hotel is used to raisefunds for community based projects.
At their Rally in 2009 an amountof R26 000 was donated by the bikersin the tent on the Saturday night ina matter of 20 minutes to assist a fam-ily in Jeffreys Bay.
“The money was raised for a coch-lea implant operation for a 10 yearold girl who was born deaf. Thisproject was run by the Couga LionsClub in Jeffreys Bay,” said McOwen.
The “Red Dog Party” bikers sleep-over is this Saturday at the ThornhillHotel. The entry fee is R40 per personand is open to all bikers who like toparty.
There will be biker games as wellas a doughnut/burnout competitionand a big screen to watch all thesporting action. The Workshop CrewRally is on 24 to 26 February 2012 atKabeljous Holiday Resort in JeffreysBay with a first prize of R5 000 and15 prizes of R1 000.
“We request all the local bikers tosupport us this weekend as well as atour rally next year,” said McOwen.

Neighbourhood watchfor Uitenhage?
In order to intensify the assistance in theirpartnership with the local police, the Uitenha-ge Community Policing Forum is planning tostart a neighbourhood watch in town.
“To ensure that we stay on the right sideof the law, we have arranged for a three hourtraining session to aquaint ourselves with thedo’s and do nots,” said Arnold Niemand,Chairperson of the Uitenhage CPF.
A retired Colonel, Dave Moorehouse, willbe presenting the training session in theUitenhage SAPS conference room from 09:00to 12:00 on Saturday, 29th October.
Further details on the way forward thereaf-ter will be provided after the training session.
“We appeal to all citizens of our town whowant to make a difference in assisting the po-lice with their fight against crime and anti-so-cial activities which are so prevalent in oursociety today, to please attend the trainingsession,” said Niemand.

Nog ‘n pluimpie vir die orkes is dattwee lede aangewys is as bestemusikante. Enriko Kolesky het dietrofee gekry vir die beste klawer-bordspeler jonger as 25 jaar en DivanBarnard die trofee vir die beste kon-sertinaspeler jonger as 25 jaar.
Die Bakgat Orkes speel nog netsowat een jaar saam en bestaan uitlede tussen 16 en 60 jaar oud. Eers-genoemde is die konsertinaspelerBarnard, ’n leerder aan dieHoërskool Framesby. Hy speel nousowat drie jaar konsertina. Op trom-me is Heinrich Kruger (18).
Die trekklavier en klawerbord-speler is Kolesky, ’n 22 jarigemusiekonderwyser aan die Laer-skool Moregrove. Op baskitaar isKobus Gouws en die orkesleier ismusiekveteraan Ben “Kitaar” duToit. Die orkes het reeds vanjaar ’nDVD bekend gestel met die titelBakgat Orkes 2011.
Op die DVD het hulle gebruik ge-maak van ’n genooide saksofoon-speler om dit ’n bietjie meer variasiete gee. Hulle speel tradisionele boere-musiek sowel as ‘n verskeidenheid
ander ligte musiek.Die orkes was in September op

How to handleswimming poolchemicals
Summer time means fun time at swim-ming pools with cool relief from the hotweather conditions. If you have aswimming pool, it also means to takeextra precautions regarding swim-ming pool chemicals.
Chemicals are potentially danger-ous and may present some hazards ifnot used properly.
In general here are some tips sup-plied by Africhem on chemical use:
• Always wash your hands beforeand after handling chemicals
• Never use metalic utensils, use on-ly plastic, glass, china or enamelwareand make sure it is clean and dry
• Add chemicals to water - never addwater to chemicals
• Add chemicals directly to the poolwater (never while swimmers are us-ing the pool)
• Never combine the material fromold and new containers
• Do not inhale chemical fumes
When it comes to the storage ofchemicals the following tips are note-worthy:
• Keep the original lids tightly on allchemical containers
• Do not stack different chemicals ontop of one another
• Store pool chemicals in a clean, dry,well-ventilated area
• Do not store chemicals near thepool heater
• Keep acids away from other chemi-cals
• Keep all chemicals out of reach ofchildren
• Separate the different forms ofchemicals
• Wash your hands thoroughly afterusing chemicals

Sports day atJubilee Park
A sports day will be held at JubileePark Sports Field on Saturday andaction starts at 09:00. The day is or-ganised by Dale Street Congrega-tional Church.
Gates will open at 08:00 with rug-by and netball matches betweenJubilee Park Primary and Uiten-hage Primary first being played.The four participating highschools are McCarthy, GambleStreet, John Walton and UitenhageHigh.

Plenty ofactionat rally
mallFountains Mall, Jeffreys Bay, will be the cen-tre of attraction this Saturday with rally carsparticipating in special stages around the carpark area during the day.
To keep the spectators entertained, driftingcarswill givedemonstrationsbetween the ral-ly stages,with smoking tyres and sidewaysac-tion from Wayne Smith and Anre Cordier.
The Rally cars will consist of three classeswith a variety of vehicles which include theVolkswagen RA5 Junior Rally Team, S20 mod-ified,/Retro pre-1985 and Luk coastal chal-lenge. Drivers and navigators from 17 yearsof age to 79, will be competing in all makesof vehicles from pre-1985 to modern salooncars rigged out for gravel and tar.
The gravel stages will follow the servicepark break along Jubilee Road and will beknown as the Detroit Motors special stage andthen on to Die Glen farm and R330.
The rallywill be repeatedalong these stagesduring the day ending at Fountains Mall withthe prize giving at the Tart & Roses.
The contest for overall honours is expectedbetween S20 Nico Smith and Stephno Pie-terse, respective driver andnavigator in aVWPolo, Rikus Smit and RA5 class leader DevonAlchin and Mark Irvine with Ross Bartle andJoubert van der Walt chasing hard for cham-pionship points in this penultimate round ofthe championship. Prestige watches fromGabriel Jewellers will be awarded to the win-ners on the day.
Luk Coastal challenge championship lead-er Peter Twiss, will be the man to beat withEx formula one driver Lionel Rowe 79 yearsof age and evergreen navigator John Finlays-on, 71, current karting campaigner who willbe navigating, looking forward to showing theyoungsters the way.
