The Southern Pine council does notgrade or test lumber. Informationcontained herein is taken from the 2002Standard Grading Rules for SouthernPine Lumber, 2002 Edition, and theExport Grading Rules, 1982 Edition, both published by the Southern PineInspection Bureau (SPIB).

The conditions under which lumber isused in construction may vary widely,as does the quality of workmanship.Neither the Southern Pine Council norits members have knowledge of thequality of the workmanship or construc-tion methods used on any constructionproject, and accordingly, do not warrantthe design or performance of the lum-ber in completed structures.

USING THIS BOOKLET

This publication includesphotographs of Southern Pinelumber, illustrating a range oftypical lumber grades. Thesamples shown are representativelumber mill production practices. The primary characteristic ofeach grade are defined, alongwith the typical applications.

This publication is not a lumbergrading manual. The informationpresented here is intended as aguide for buyers, users, and

specifiers to properly identify thegrade of Southern Pine that bestmeets their requirements.

Lumber production practicesvary from mill to mill.Manufacturers of rough, kiln-dried Southern Pine destined forexport markets have thecapability to produce lumber todifferent specifications andvariances, depending on thespecific needs of a customer, orthe intended application.

SOUTHERN PINE LUMBER

Southern Pine grows in a widegeographic belt, stretching fromEast Texas through Virginia. The name Southern Pine, orSouthern Pine Yellow Pine, isrepresentative of a group of fourprincipal tree species: longleaf, shortleaf, loblolly, and slash.Lumber from all four species ismarketed as Southern Pine andgraded in accordance with thegrading rules of Southern PineInspection Bureau (SPIB),approved by the AmericanSoftwood Lumber StandardsCommittee. The naturalcharacteristics that distinguishSouthern Pine as a mostversatile and durable buildingmaterial are:

High Strength – Designvalues assigned for SouthernPine are among the highest ofall softwoods. Southern Pine hasearned a reputation as the“Supreme Structural Wood ofthe World”.

Durability – Southern Pine ishighly resistant to wear. It isideally suited for high-trafficapplications such as boardwalks, decks, and flooring.

Fastener Holding –Southern Pine’s ability to holdnails and other fasteners isamong the highest of allsoftwoods. Drying (or seasoning)of Southern Pine lumberenhances fastener-holdingcapability.

Treatability – Southern Pinehas long been a preferred specieswhen pressure treatment withpreservatives is required. Theunique cellular structure ofSouthern Pine permits deep, uniform penetration ofpreservatives, rendering thewood useless as a food source forfungi, termites and micro-organisms.

Most wood species do notreadily accept preservatives, andmust first be incised, orperforated with a series of smallslits along the grain of thewood’s surface. Incising allowssufficient penetration of thepreservative to meet AmericanWood Preservers’ Association(AWPA) Standards. SouthernPine is one of the few woodspecies that does not requireincising prior to treatment.

DENSE LUMBER

Wood density is another characteristicthat affects the strength of a piece oflumber. Density is related to a tree’srate of growth; the more annual growthrings per inch, the greater the densityof the lumber.

For purposes of lumber grading, andas defined with the SPIB StandardGrading Rules for Southern Pine Lum-ber, density is divided into two classifi-cations:

Dense – six or more annual growthrings per inch and at least one thirdsummerwood, or four rings per inchand at least 50% summerwood.

NonDense – fewer rings and lesssummerwood than in dense lumber.

Pictured: 2x4 Dense Select Structural (top);2x4 No. 1 NonDense (bottom)

Dense lumber, which is stronger thannondense lumber, may be specifiedwhen higher design values arerequired.

For this publication, nondense gradesare pictured. Certain Southern Pinemills produce dense grades, thoughavailability of all dense grades may belimited. Grade designations for denselumber are:

SPECIFY GRADE-MARKED SOUTHERN PINE

LUMBER GRADES

Southern Pine lumber isproduced in different grades, aswell as different sizes. Eachlumber grade limits certaincharacteristics such as knots, checks and splits. Along withmanufacturing imperfections, these characteristics willcontribute to the overallappearance of a piece of lumber.

At the mill, lumber grades areassigned by visual inspection ofeach piece. For lumber destinedto be used in U.S. constructionmarkets, this inspection is morea judgement of the relativestrength properties within apiece than of its appearance. Formaterial to be exported, appearance considerations as

well as relative strength propertiesof a piece are often a decidingfactor in assigning a lumber grade.

The samples pictured in thispublication include examples ofallowable characteristics withineach grade, as described in SPIB’s2002 Standard Grading Rules, and SPIB’s Export Grading Rules,1982 Edition, approved by theAmerican Standards Committee,in accordance with ProductStandard PS 20-94.

A complete lumber gradedescription should be includedwith any buyer’s order, and isconsidered an agreement betweenbuyer and seller of specificcharacteristics allowed withineach grade purchased.

Quality Southern Pine lumber isgraded in accordance with thegrading rules of the Southern PineInspection Bureau (SPIB). SPIB,Timber Products Inspection, Inc.(TP), Renewable ResourceAssociates, Inc. (RRA) and otherorganizations are accredited byAmerican Lumber StandardCommittee, Inc. (ALSC) to inspectand grade mark Southern Pine

lumber in accordance with SPIBgrading rules.

An authorized grade mark oneach piece of Southern Pinelumber assures the buyer that theproduct specified is beingreceived. The inspection agency isidentified (SPIB, TP or RRAamong others**) along with thegrade of the piece, its moisturecontent, and a mill numberidentifying the manufacturer.SFPA members can include theassociation’s logo in the grademark, but this logo is optional.

**NOTE: Other agencies are accredited by ALSC to inspect and grade all or selected Southern Pine products according to SPIBGrading Rules, including: California Lumber Inspection Service (CLIS); Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA);West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau (WCLIB); and Western Wood Products Association (WWPA).

CONSTRUCTION GRADESLumber production practices varyamong mills. Many Southern Pinemills produce and market materialdestined for export markets classifiedunder a category known as“Construction Grades”:

No. 1 Construction GradeNo. 2 & BetterNo. 3 & Better

This material is all rough-sawn, kiln-dried lumber cut to full dimensionwidths and thicknesses, and graded tomeet the requirements of the corre-sponding lumber grade as describedin the SPIB Standard Grading Rulesfor Southern Pine Lumber, 1994 Edi-tion. Construction Grades are madeavailable to importers, buyers andspecifiers outside the U.S. for customremanufacturing, or to be resawn tospecific sizes (e.g. metric) or patterns.

The vast majority of SouthernPine lumber production isproperly seasoned, by drying in akiln, to a maximum moisturecontent of 19%. Kiln drying thelumber not only improvesdimensional stability, itsstrength and appearance, butalso minimizes shrinkage of thefinal product in service. Inaddition, kiln drying is anaccepted method of sterilizingthe lumber from the unwantedtransfer of micro-organisms.

Southern Pine grading rulesrestrict moisture content oflumber 50mm (2") or less inthickness to a maximum of19%. If specified as “KD19”, themaximum is 19 percent .Moisture content restrictionsapply at the time of shipment tothe buyers, as well as at the timeof dressing if dressed lumber isinvolved.

Material identified by acertified grade mark is evidencethat the Southern Pine lumberhas been properly seasoned, and

is considered sterilized by mostimporting countries.

Lumber absorbs or losesmoisture depending on thesurrounding temperature andhumidity. Within a typicalshipment, Southern Pine lumberdried to a maximum moisturecontent of 19% will average15% and if dried to a maximummoisture content of 15% willaverage 12%.

Once kiln-dried SouthernPine shipments are delivered, proper storage is essential tomaintain dimensional stability. For builders and other users,kiln-dried lumber reduces costlyand unsightly problems such aswarp, twist, stain, and crook.

KILN DRYING ASSURES DIMENSIONAL STABILITY

Wood products have so many costand construction advantages overother building materials that it is easyto forget what an environmental assetit is to use wood.

We sometimes forget that wood isnaturally reusable, recyclable andbiodegradable. Or the best insulatorof all structural building materials, thus conserving finite fossil fuel andcoal by requiring less energy to heatan cool a home built with wood. Orthat it takes far less energy totransform trees into wood productsthan it does to manufacture steel, aluminum, masonry or plasticproducts. Less pollution of the air

and water, too.Wood is also renewable. Ores and

petroleum used for nonwoodproducts, once use are notrenewable. They are gone forever.

Trees however, are forever.Contrary to what alarmists say.America is not running out of trees.More trees are grown each year in theU.S. than are harvested or lost todisease. insects and fire. A third ofAmerica is covered with trees today, more than we had 75 years ago. Andbeing planted at the rate of nearlyfour million a day -- five trees a yearfor every American.

Finally, remember that a growingforest removes the greenhouse gascarbon dioxide, while giving off life-sustaining oxygen. Can you think of abetter environmental exchange thanthat?
