DAVID HAGLUND, ED.D., SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS FROM: JANELLE WOODWARD, ED.D., ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, TEACHING AND LEARNING Learning Opportunities for Families

We would love to have parents and guardians participate in the following opportunities: (1) Parenting the Love and Logic Way Course Information Night is on October 3 and the course starts on October 8th! (2) Join us for a Community Book Study of the book Biased by Jennifer Eberhardt, Ph.D., which starts in October. SAT Testing at Las Positas College Las Positas College is offered SAT Testing for the second consecutive year.

ELPAC Field Testing Pleasanton Unified School District is participating in Field Testing for the Computer Based Summative and Initial English Proficiency Assessment in California (ELPAC). The ELPAC field test will gather test response data from approximately 56,000 students representing diverse geographic locations throughout California, and will benefit participating districts in becoming familiar with the new Computer Based ELPAC format. Participating districts will receive a stipend based on the number of students tested during the field test. By agreeing to participate in the field test, districts must commit to:

● Participating in the CB ELPAC field test during the field test window of October 1 - October 25, 2019

● Participating in a one-day California Department of Education-sponsored ELPAC administration and scoring training in October 2019

The PUSD Testing window will extend from October 14 - 25, 2019. Staff from the Department of Assessment and Accountability attended training on October 3, 2019 to learn about how to administer the ELPAC in a computer based format. Altogether 60 students have been identified by Educational Testing Services as potential participants in the field test. These students are current English Learners and have taken either the paper version of the Initial ELPAC or the Initial and Summative ELPAC. All students are in grades K-2 and will be administered the Computer Based ELPAC individually per administration requirements. Three schools will be participating in the Computer Based ELPAC Field Test:

● Alisal: Kindergarten

Page 3: ULLETIN TO THE OARD O CTOBER 6, 2019€¦ · B ULLETIN TO THE B OARD O CTOBER 6, 2019 T O: M EMBERS, B OARD OF EDUCATION F ROM: D AVID H AGLUND, E D.D., S UPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

● Mohr: First Grade ● Fairlands: Second Grade

Parents/Guardians of these identified students have received a communication to let them know that their student is included in this field test. Parents/guardians may decide to opt their student out of participation in this field test. Because a field test is being administered, no student scores will be generated or made available for schools, or parents/guardians. The assessment will be administered by currently trained ELPAC test administrators. These test administrators will receive additional training on October 8th specifically designed to assist them in using a technology device to administer the assessment. Students will be able to use the device to see picture prompts, read text passages and listen to auditory prompts. The writing portion of the computer based assessment for grades K-2 will continue to be administered with paper and pencil. In preparation for the computer-based Summative ELPAC, online training tests by grade and grade span are now available for test examiners to begin preparing students to take the computer-based Summative ELPAC. Test examiners can access the training tests from ELPAC.org by selecting the “Practice & Training Tests” button on the ELPAC TOMS website. Ballet Folklórico México Danza Ballet Folklórico México Danza and PUSD student Mariachi Band will join Oakland Ballet Company to present a special showcase of the beautiful, cultural Oakland Ballet Company’s Luna Mexicana. Luna Mexicana returns to Amador Theater this October 25th with two shows during the school day and one public show at 7:00 pm. This family-friendly performance is filled with festive dancing, colorful costumes, and vibrant music in celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). In "Luna Mexicana", a young woman’s dreams revive her relatives and friends who dance back to life in the forms of teetering skeletons, skirt swishing girls, a high flying ‘deer dancer,’ and a deathly Bride and Groom. Luna Mexicana will feature ‘Viva la Vida’ – a ballet celebrating the life and singular artistic vision of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. An event not to be missed! Ballet Folklorico Mexico Danza and PUSD student Mariachi Band will join OBC to present a special showcase of the beautiful, cultural heritage of Mexico through folkloric dance and music.
