Dear Parishioners: October is an important month in the life of our St. Demetrios Community. Every month is significant in that it marks the ebb and flow of our life writing our story that ultimately accompanies the story of our Lord. This month we will celebrate the feast day of our patron saint, Saint Demetrios. It is important for us to reflect on his life, and how his life was transformed when Christ came to truly live in his heart. St. DemetrioS the Great martyr: truly Great

St. Demetrios is, of course, the patron saint of our church. Throughout the year we gather together as a Church fam-ily and, encouraged by his inspirational story, we strive to live a Christ centered life, just as he did.

Only a small number of saints are called “Great” in our

Orthodox Church. Even fewer are known as “Great Martyrs.” St. Demetrios is one of those few given this honor and distinction by the Church. While many know about his life, to draw closer to him and what he means to us all, it is important to relive and remember his life.

St. Demetrios died for his faith during the violent persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian in the year 306. Demetrios was a soldier in the Roman Army and was also a skilled orator and leader. More important, he was a Christian in a time when those who believed in Christ were hounded by pagan rulers and killed for their faith. Demetrios was named to a governmental position as consul of Thes-salonika, but instead of persecuting Christians there, he preached to them and guided them.

It wasn’t long before the emperor heard of strong faith and com-mitment to ministry, and he ordered him arrested and imprisoned. While there, he urged a young christian named Nestor to engage in combat with a famous gladiator who had murdered many a believer in the amphitheater over the years. This time, the gladiator was overwhelmed by the much smaller Nestor, who prayed with St. Demetrios who called upon God for strength in battle.

Humiliated over Nestor’s spiritual and physical victory, the emperor soon after ordered Nestor and Demetrios executed.

A church was built over the remains of St. Demetrios at Thessalonica and devotion to him spread far and wide. This early church was destroyed by fire in the 7th century and was replaced by another edifice, adorned with Byzantine-style mosaics.

Icons of St. Demetrios depict the saint in a number of ways: often as a young soldier with a lance and shield; a victorious soldier upon a horse; as a deacon; and other times as a protector of children. He is profoundly revered in Europe and his feastday is commemorated with great festivity in Thessalonica, where he is considered the patron saint of that city.

As his feast approaches on October 26, we pray that the faith-ful of our parish are inspired by his holy life—his strong faith, compassion, courage and fortitude. A blessed feast to our entire St. Demetrios family!

Thank you

I wish to express a heartfelt THANK YOU to all those who prayed for me during my recent surgery. Receiving your cards, emails, phone calls and yes, goodies helped this pe-riod of recuperation move quickly by thinking of your kind-ness and warm thoughts. Receiving a prayer shawl from our knitting group also kept me comfortable knowing that your thoughts and prayers were with me. It is a remarkable and healing feeling knowing that others are with you during challenging times. Thank you again and I look forward to be being back with you soon.

In Christ our true Healer,

Welcome to St Demetrios Church School!

Our Church School program began September 11th with the

start of the Divine Liturgy and a prayer for a blessed and good year offered by Fr. Vin-nie. Our goal as a Church School program is to educate our youth about their faith. We have to remember that the education of our children begins IN the Church with the Divine Liturgy. A productive Church School program must incorporate the Divine Liturgy and so we pray and ask that all our students make every effort to arrive by the start of the Liturgy at 9:30 am. We understand that as parents, there are so many obligations; whether it be school, sports practices, music lessons, the list goes on but we ask you to please prioritize the spiritual and religious development of your child and bring them to Church on a regular basis. More and more of our families arrive later and later, and in many cases, miss the Liturgy altogether! With the start of a new Church School Year, we hope that we can start fresh and dedicate ourselves not only to Church School but to the attendance of the Divine Liturgy. It was wonderful to meet so many of you during the Ministry Fair. If you have not registered your child for classes, please stop by the Church Office for a registration form.

GOYA BasketballPreparations are underway for the start of the 2016-2017 Metropolis Bas-ketball League. For those unfamiliar, each year, the Metropolis of Boston orga-nizes a youth basketball league for Orthodox Christian boys and girls from ages 8 to 18. It is a great way for your son or daughter to connect socially with their fellow parishioners and to meet other Orthodox kids from throughout the Metropolis. The kids are divided into three groups: Jr. JOY, JOY and GOYA. Jr. Joy is a co-ed program of skills clinics for elementary school kids ages 8 to 10. The events are on Saturdays in Brookline or Weston

JOY is a co-ed program of Parish Teams for kids ages 11 to 13. The games are on Saturdays in Brook-line or Weston.

GOYA is divided into Boys and Girls Teams for kids ages 14 to 18. The games are on Sunday after-noons/early evenings in Brookline. There is a nominal cost of about $50 for Jr. JOY and $100 for JOY or GOYAS. Teams practice once a week and the season will begin in late October. If you have any questions or would like to register your son or daugh-ter, please contact our Church office or Emanuel Markis @ [email protected].

hoPEThere are TWO HOPE events coming up for the month of OCTOBER! Please mark your calendars and RSVP to [email protected] or to (781)718-3068. Please make every effort to attend, as our goal is to expand our youngest youth group program this upcoming 2016-2017 school year! Any questions, comments or concerns, please email, call or text Diana S. Katsikaris (contact information listed above) Have a blessed month!

Hi everyone! I am Alex Luzaitis and I will be this year’s GOYA president. Myself along with the other officers have an exciting month planned for October. On Saturday October 1st, parishioners of the church will be doing the “Chris’ Crusaders Walk” to help raise awareness for GBS and CIPD. This will be held at Francis Williams Bird Park in Walpole from 9am to 12pm. The next week from the 7th to the 9th, The MBC camp will be having their fall camp up in New Hampshire. We would really like to get as many GOY-Ans as possible to go. This is a great opportunity to meet kids from other parishes that you would not get the chance to meet otherwise. Later in the month, we will be doing our annual GOYA apple picking on October 29th. We will meet at the church in the morning and then carpool down to Honey Pot Hill Farm in Stow. We will not only be picking some delicious apples but you can also buy some amazing apple cider or apple cider donuts. I am very excited to start this promising year with such great events and hope that the rest of the year will be fun filled as well!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As fall approaches, I hope that we are all feeling renewed by the beginning of our Liturgical year. For many of us, when we say goodbye to summer, we start to settle more fully into life at church. For some, that means our children are back in Church School, HOPE, JOY, GOYA, Altar Servers. For others, it means that we are back serving more fully in our cherished ministries. For others of us us, it is an opportunity to try something new. What ministry would you like to be part of? Chorus? Philoptochos? Our adult learning series on our Faith? The 50 Something Club? There are so many opportunities to share our Faith through the Fellowship of our Church Ministries. Please don’t miss out on the opportunities Ministry service pro-vides. Each of us has a special part in God’s divine plan. Joining a ministry is a wonderful way to discover the deeper meaning of our Faith and to make new friends. Christ is calling us to service His Church: “The harvest is a plentiful, but the laborers few.” Please heed His call.

This year our St. Demetrios parish has the honor of hosting Theophany School for its Annual Benefit Evening here at our parish hall, on Saturday, October 15, at 5 pm.

In addition, it is our double honor to host Theophany School as it honors Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou for his lifetime of service to Or-thodox Christian education, as former Presi-dent of Hellenic College/Holy Cross, former member of the Theophany School Board of Trustees, and a founder of the Annunciation Orthodox School in Houston, TX. Many of us know about Theophany School, but for those who don’t, our beloved Theophany School is one of only a hand-ful of Orthodox Christian schools in this country. Located at 754 Greendale Avenue in Needham, the School serves children ages preschool – kindergarten, with the hope to expand to elementary, and beyond. The School was founded in 1997 by a group of local Orthodox Christians whose wish was that children’s first steps outside of our homes and churches be in an Orthodox Christian academic environment. The School strives to educate and cultivate each child’s God-given gifts and talents and encourage them to be in-dependent thinkers and thoughtful members of our community and our world. Over the years close to 50 children from St. Demetrios have attended Theophany School, and their parents and other parishioners have served in teaching and leadership positions and have been supporters of the School. The School and its staff are fully licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts - Early Education and Care (EEC) and the requisite local licensing Boards. The School warmly extends an invitation to all St. Demetrios parishioners to attend this joyous celebration. You will see friends and fellow parishioners, enjoy dinner catered by the Dolphin restaurant, and hear about the School’s accomplishments and its vision for the future. To learn more about the School, or to rsvp, please visit www.theophanyschool.org, or call the School at 781.444.3058.
