A YEAR OF RENEWAL ~ TO RESTORE ALL THINGS IN CHRIST TWENTY NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

OCTOBER 16, 2011 ~ STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY THE LORD IS THE CENTER OF OUR LIVES

Stewardship Reflections from Father Tom: In today's Scriptures, we come to reflect on the fact that everything comes from God and is a gift from God to each of us. The blessings that come to us from God are God's gift to us. When we lose sight of this fact, we are no longer grateful and can even come to believe that all that we have is only due to our own efforts. This Stewardship Sunday poses a reminder to each of us that the gifts that we receive are also the gifts that we gratefully share. As followers of Christ, we not only support the needs of the poor but we also support the needs of our Community of Faith in order to provide for the common good. We support through our stewardship the development and upkeep of our facilities, the maintenance of our parish plant and grounds, the payment of utilities and other services, the salaries and benefits for our employees, the support of our services to parishioners, the carrying out of the many ministries, the financial obligations to the local municipalities, the obligations to the Diocese of Joliet, and the extraordinary expenses that arise in all circumstances. As Mother Angelica always fondly and poignantly says, "this network is brought to you by you." So as stewards of the gifts of God to us, this parish is brought to you by you. This clearly challenges us to remember that even in tight financial times, all that we are and all that we do depends on our willingness to share our gifts and blessings in order to make Saint Pius X happen on a daily basis. As generous stewards, we have seen so many things happen. As those who oversee the stewardship of the parish, our leadership is alert to both our many needs and how to meet those needs in the best possible ways and with judicious spending. This means frugal and prudent stewardship but also responsible and productive development and upkeep. Finally, planning and progress are important and so a strategic plan must be in place to build now and for our future. This is currently on the planning board. Our success in accomplishing our development and meeting our needs depends on a strong, well developed, and consistent stewardship by our parish family. Saint Pius X is abundantly blessed with so many dedicated parishioners who give of their time, who share their gifts, and who financially support this Community of Faith. In fact, while some only take advantage, many more participate in the financial stewardship that is so essential to our maintaining, growing, and developing this awesome Community of Faith. We have seen great progress in so many areas of parish life and ongoing development these past three years. We can truly have, "Pride in Pius." It is mutual responsibility and sharing of a stewardship of caring and involvement that makes so much possible and that continues to make even more things possible. As we continue "to build for our future, renew our Spirit, and renew our worship space," we also must continue to maintain our parish plant, continue and expand our many ministries and services, pay a just wage to our employees, meet our ordinary expenses, provide for extraordinary expenses, and render to God the things that are God's in thanksgiving for our many blessings. We appeal to you to consider financial support if you are able and if you have not been doing so. Every gift counts. To our financial supporters, we say "thank you" and we ask you to consider an increase if you are able to help us meet our growing needs. We ask you to pray for our needs if you are no longer able to support us as you would like. Finally, we are always here to assist those in need in any way that we can, even if you are not involved on a regular basis in parish life. During "A Year of Renewal ~ To Restore All Things in Christ," may we work together to build a solid spiritual base, a solid community base, and a solid financial base in which to build up our Catholic Community of Faith, reach out to our own who are inactive, and reach out to those in need. This is our common work of faith and labor in the Holy Spirit. In that same Holy Spirit may we truly be good and grateful stewards. The Scriptures of this Sunday: Isaiah 45: 1, 4-6 ~ We are to worship only God, the God who calls us by name. 1 Thessalonians 1: 1-5b ~ Our work of faith and labor in love comes not in word alone but in the power of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 22: 15-21 ~ All that we have comes from God, so even as we render to Caesar, we always render to God.

Fall Fest: Thanks to all those who planned and worked at our Fall Fest. It was an awesome weekend from the bingo, to the Battle of the Bands, the Polka Mass, and all the great activities, especially for the kids. This was truly a family-oriented celebration of our "Pride in Pius" and our great community spirit. We are a truly blessed and gifted parish. Thanks to all those who supported our efforts and those who were able to attend the various activities. As one parishioner put it about the Polka Mass, "you could feel the Spirit come down upon us and sense the presence with us." Amen.

Youth and Family Mass: Don't forget the Youth and Family Mass next Sunday at 11:00 am. Our parish Youth Ministry carries out the various ministries at Mass. We are always looking for more young people to join in the Mass even if you can't always attend Youth Ministry activities. This is part of our "Pride in Pius" and our great parish youth here at Saint Pius X.

Stewardship Sunday: As we enter our time of Stewardship Renewal, we thank you for all your gifts and talents shared with this wonderful Community of Faith. We hope that we can continue to deepen in community and in the sharing of our blessings and gifts with one another. Thank you for all you do and for your prayerful consideration on our Stewardship Renewal.

Building our Worship Space: Things are progressing beautifully on the new sanctuary. We can be proud of our accomplishment on this goal. You the people of Saint Pius X deserve a refreshed and renewed space that is more user friendly and necessary after so many years. Thanks for your support and kind comments. It is exciting as so many have told me. It is also helping to create an even greater community spirit. We are truly blessed!

In his Spirit!

"Repay to Caesar, what is Caesar's, and repay to God what is God's." This is a very well known and often quoted verse from the bible, used to soothe the pain of having to pay our taxes. And yet, in those rare instances when the government fulfills its God ordained

duties to "establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense and promote the general welfare" of its citizens, paying the tax, or repaying the government is an issue of justice. Those who benefit from the military defense, the local and interstate roadways, the police and the fire protection ought to pay for it. ` Unfortunately, little to no attention is paid to the second half of that verse. "Repay to God what is God's." There is often painful consequence if we do not pay our taxes, and little physical consequence if we ignore our God. The culture we find ourselves living in today is working overtime to keep God out of our lives and to deny His existence in the first place. We know God exists, so what is God's? In a word, everything. The entire world and everything in it belongs to God. We belong to God. Our parents came to us from God. The children God gave to us belong to God. Our clothes, our homes, our cars, our money belong to God. Everything belongs to God. Therefore, to be consistent with the issue of justice described above we must repay to God for all that He has provided for our benefit. If we don't, we are living selfish, self-centered lives which the culture encourages. As Christians, more often than not, we must be "counter culture" and give to God what is due Him. Repaying God is not like paying taxes. Repaying God is using the gifts He has given us for the benefit of others, such as our families, our friends, our neighbors, our strangers, our foreigners, our enemies and even those who support the anti-God culture. Are we doing that? Are we doing our fair share for the upkeep of the parish? Are we contributing to the capital campaign so that our children and grandchildren can worship together at St. Pius X for years to come, like we have for years in the past? Are we using the talents God gave us to spread the good news through ministry, religious ed, RCIA and the daily lives we lead? Are we using our God given resources to serve the least of our brothers for the sake of God? Can we help Deacon Larry with P.A.D.S. or work with the St. Vincent DePaul Society? Are we using the gifts we have been given the way God designed them to be used? Are we keeping our bodies healthy and our minds clean? Doing these things and consciously living our lives according to the command of Jesus to love God and love our neighbor is the way we "repay to God the things that are God's." It is only just. Deacon Tom

DEACON SPEAKIN’

….YOU CAN’T BE BOTH

Last week the world mourned the death of Steve Jobs. Jobs was an American inventor, visionary, and creative genius who co-founded the Apple Computer Company. His genius brought us the personal computer, the Ipod, the Ipad and the Iphone. The contributions from his life will be remembered like Edison, Bell and Ford. Thank God that his parents, who did not want this child, chose to give him up for adoption. Had abortion been legal in the United States in 1955, we may have never known the genius of Steve Jobs. How many more talented individuals have we lost to abortion over the last 38 years? How many more will we lose? Never stop praying for an end to abortion.

October is the month of the Rosary. We again turn to Our Lady Our Beloved Queen with renewed faith and trust. What better gesture of this abiding love than to have Mary Immaculate Queen enthroned in your home. To have the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Immaculate Queen reside in a place of honor in your home will surely bring blessings to the home, the family and all its members. Please consider to again turn to our Queen for her maternal help and protection. If you have any questions, you can contact Sarah at 630-629-9165.

CCW ANNUAL TEA

Week of Oct. 16 – Session 22: The Trial of the Christ Readings: Matthew 26; Exodus 12; Exodus 21:32; Exodus 12; 1 Peter 1:18-19;

Catechism 610, 612-14; Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:1-18

Matthew 26 contrasts Jesus’ precious worth with the paltry sum of Judas’ betrayal. It contrasts a woman willing to spend a fortune anointing him with men who misunderstood and hated him to the point of wanting him dead. Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem during the Passover prepares for his own “Exodus.” Jesus struggles with temptation in the garden; sets aside his own will and does that of his heavenly Father. After his arrest, Jesus makes his claim to being the Messiah when he is brought before Caiaphas. The Jewish leaders view this as blasphemy and prepare to condemn him. Jesus’ “hour” has come at long last.

MATTHEW: THE KING AND HIS KINGDOM

GREAT ADVENTURE CONTINUES ACTS

Witness the Exciting Foundations of the Church with

Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom The Acts of the Apostles is more than a history of the First Christians. It is an

incredible story of the power of the Holy Spirit. After the Ascension of Christ, the Apostles appeared worried and confused. They had spent three years in the presence of our Savior and our God, and now He had returned to His Father. But he did not leave them alone. Christ sent the Apostles the Holy Spirit to guide, instruct, and empower them. In Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom, you will witness how the Apostles, through the Power of the Holy Spirit, continued the saving mission of Christ on earth. You will see how the Kingdom of God is truly among us in the Holy Church established by Christ, and you will come to a greater appreciation for the entire Catholic Faith. Join us for Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom at St. Pius X Church beginning the week of January 8, 2012 and continuing through the week of May 27. There will be a break in the session during Holy Week (April 1-7). Sessions will be offered on Sundays 7-9 PM, Mondays 7-9 PM, Tuesdays 7-9 PM, Wednesdays 9:15-11:15 AM and Thursdays 7:30-9:30 PM. Registration begins the weekend of October 15/16 and runs through the weekend of October 29/30. The cost for the Acts sessions is $30.00. Checks should be made payable to St. Pius X Church. Materials may be picked up after all Masses the weekends of November 19/20 and December 3/4. For more information about the study, call Kelly Reznicek at 630-269-5954 or email [email protected].

St. Pius X , St. Alexander, and Sacred Heart Schools present High School Fair 2011

Wednesday, October 19 — 7:00 to 8:00 pm St. Pius X Parish Social Center

Parents of students in grades 6-8 are invited to learn more about local Catholic High Schools: Montini, Nazareth Academy, St. Francis, Benet Academy, St. Joseph, Trinity, Immaculate Conception, and Marmion Academy. Meet with school representatives and get your questions answered. Each School will have information packets for parents to take home. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to explore a Catholic high school education. Everyone is welcome and the event is free. No pre-registration is necessary.

We don’t often think of friendship in a program about faith. Yet friendship is the closest experience we have to the experience of faith. Friends gift us with joy; support us in sorrow; lift us when we are down; enter our lives to give us their time and presence in many and varied ways. In the SPRED program, we grow in this kind of friendship with fellow parishioners who choose to welcome people with developmental and intellectual challenges on alternate weeks. Informational Gathering on Monday, October 24 at 7:00 pm in the Wagner Room. We need adult volunteers, especially men. Your help will make a difference.

MEAL TRAIN

Climb Aboard the St. Pius Parish and School

Meal Train

The Elizabeth Ministry from the Parish provides meals to families of the parish and school when a new baby is born or when there is an illness in the family. The Meal Train is a website where you sign up to bring a meal for a family in need. You pick the day and tell what type of meal you would like to bring. This way there are no duplicates. The website also provides an address and phone number for the family, as well as any food allergies or other special dietary needs. The meals don’t have to be fancy either. You can order take out for the family if that is easier. It is a great way to get involved with the Parish and School and families are so appreciative of the meals. If you are interested in signing up for the St. Pius Meal Train, please send Sue D’Alessandro, Meal Train Coordinator, an email at [email protected]. I will add you to the email list. When there is a need for meals, you will be contacted by email with the link for that specific meal train.

It‘s that easy!!! Won’t you please consider joining

the St. Pius Meal Train? Any questions, please feel free to contact Sue at the above email address or 630-936-5272.

COMMUNICATION FROM THE BISHOP Next Sunday, October 23, Pope Benedict XVI calls every Catholic in the world to celebrate our vocation to be missionary. It’s World Mission Sunday! As Catholics around the world – here at home and in the Missions – gather at the Eucharist around the table of the Lord, we are to pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work. We pray for those awaiting the “Good News” of our Lord’s great love for us and for the missionaries who offer the poor and suffering the light of Christ. We are to offer financial help through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. Just as our young church here in the United States received support in the 19th century from the Catholics of Europe through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, so too the growing churches in the Developing World today also require financial help. Your generosity will help make a faith-filled difference around the world! *A gift of $15 is a week’s support of a young man in a mission seminary. * A gift of $20 helps to purchase a desk and books for a student in a catechetical class in a parish in the mountainous region of northern Vietnam. * A gift of $75 provides support for religious Sisters in Zambia serving at a mission hospital there. * A gift of $125 will help toward food, shelter, clothing, medical care and an education for one of the 45 young girls in the care of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Thailand. For more about this important celebration of the universal Church, please visit the special World Mission Sunday web site: www.iamamissionary.org.
