week one | UNCHARTED COURAGE

GOD CALLS US INTO THE UNCHARTED ANDTO FOLLOW HIM WHERE HE LEADSJOSHUA 1:1-9After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross theJordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate onit day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will bewith you wherever you go.”

2. This must have been a challenging and fearful time, as Moses was no longer with them. Joshua had to rise up and follow God in a way he had not done before. What specifically is God asking Joshua to do as he follows him? What are the exact commands God asks of Joshua?

4. Generosity is something that changes us and challenges us in ways that few things in our faith do because it is such a denial of self and such a trusting in God. What do you think it will mean to be Uncharted in your generosity in this next season for Compass?

5. Do you believe God can and WILL do something THROUGH you and IN you during this season of Uncharted? How do you think God is seeking to use you and your resources in such a way that brings glory to Him and shines light on His name, even when you may not know the specific path ahead? He is asking you to follow Him. Will you?

GOD DOES NOT WANT GENEROSITY FROM US. HE WANTS IT FOR US. COLOSSIANS 1:3-14We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people - the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world - just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we havenot stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share inthe inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light. ForHe has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we haveredemption, the forgiveness of sins.

6. As you read this letter Paul wrote to the Early Church at Colossae, think of Compass in this season. This step of faith for Compass is the largest thing we have ever done as a church. It literally has the potential to change our church, and it is a risk we are willing to take in light of God’s word and God’s leading. What would it mean for your generosity if you had a full view in mind of what it looks like to truly follow God like Joshua did and like Paul did in this passage? What would giving in an Uncharted way in light of that actually mean?

week two | UNCHARTED FAITH

GOD CALL US TO HAVE FAITH IN HIS PROTECTION.JOSHUA 2:12-24 “Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.” “Our lives for your lives!” the men assured her. “If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.” So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. She said to them, “Go to the hills so the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there three days until they return, and then go on your way.” Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house.

If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.” “Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.” So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fearbecause of us.”

TAKING ACTION THROUGH UNCHARTED FAITH PRODUCES AN ETERNAL IMPACT. HEBREW 11:1-16Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead. By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God hadtaken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commendedas one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believethat he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seekhim. By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.

By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of therighteousness that is in keeping with faith. By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as hisinheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the Promised Land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children becauseshe considered him faithful who had made the promise.

And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, camedescendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:14-15

week three | UNCHARTED TRUST

JOSHUA 3:1-14Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. After three days the officers went throughout the camp, giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it.

Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousandcubits between you and the ark; do not go near it.” Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.”

Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them. And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests who carry the ark of thecovenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters,go and stand in the river.’”

Joshua said to the Israelites, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God. This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you.

Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap.”

So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them.

1. The boldness we see in Joshua in this passage is remarkable. He had received direction from the Lord, and he is now chal lenging the Israelites to trust God in Uncharted ways with these steps of faith. Going into the Uncharted doesn’t just require us listening to God; it also requires us acting on what God is asking us to do. What fears in this passage were over come as Joshua and the Israelites trusted God and took their next steps?

4. Joshua’s leadership in this passage is Uncharted for him. It’s clear that Joshua’s strength came from the Lord and not from his own abilities. He gives credit and credence to the Lord in how he calls people to action. Going into the Un charted isn’t about a personality trait or something that certain people have and others don’t; the boldness and strength needed to cross into something unknown comes from the Lord to all who seek it and answer the call. Do you consider yourself ready to go into the Uncharted, or do you feel this is something you need to ask of the Lord?

uncharted gratitude | joshua 4DON’T FORGET TO ________________ WHAT GOD HAS DONE!

When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Josh-ua, “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan fromright where the priests stood and to carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.” So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of theJordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to thenumber of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In thefuture, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell themthat the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stonesfrom the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israel-ites, as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. Joshua 4:1-8

Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Command the priests carrying the ark of the Tes-timony to come up out of the Jordan.” So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up out of the Jordan.” And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as be-fore. On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan.

He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask theirfathers, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan just what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is power-ful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God.” Joshua 4:15-24

week four | UNCHARTED GRATITUDE

JOSHUA 4:1- 9 “When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Choose twelve men from among thepeople, one from each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from right where the priests are standing, and carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.” So Joshua called\together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan.

Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.” So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them.

They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, ac-cording to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the Lord had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.

1. Why was it important to God that each tribe in Israel be a part of gathering the stones when crossing the Jordan? Why is it important that every individual and family at Compass be a part of going into the Uncharted with our generosity together as a church?

Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a manstanding in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua wentup to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”

The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, forthe place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.JOSHUA 5:13-15

JOSHUA 6:1-20Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up,everyone straight in.” So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.” And heordered the army, “Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priestscarrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenantfollowed them. The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark.All this time the trumpets were sounding. But Joshua hadcommanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raiseyour voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!”

So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there. Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marchingbefore the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets.

The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[a] to the Lord.

Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”

When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at thesound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.

1. This is yet again another powerful story of Joshua’s Uncharted impact as the Lord honors him for his faithfulness. Entering into the Uncharted has a lasting effect. It becomes a continual commitment to God. How do you think Joshua and the Israelites felt about following any of God’s leading after seeing this battle plan defeat the city of Jericho? How would you have felt if you were walking around the city with them?

2. Joshua and his people were asked to do major things for the Lord, major sacrifices that were made and hardships that were endured for the sake of honoring God’s call. What motivates you to sacrifice in a significant way for God for the sake of leading more people to find and follow Jesus?

In this chapter, Joshua recaps the history of the Israelites and in verse 15 says, “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then you choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” It is incredible how Joshua in this not only makes a proclamation for himself but also his household. Joshua knew the victories from his lifetime would extend generations down his family line. How will your Uncharted journey proclaim who you and your household serve?

4. As you think about the stories of Joshua we have studied in this Uncharted series, what traits of Joshua do you most find in yourself? How do you differ from Joshua?

JESUS’S VICTORY ENHANCES OUR LEGACY HEBREWS 12:1-3Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud ofwitnesses, let us throw of everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

4. Something to remember as we read through the story of Joshua is that Jesus had not come yet as an atoning sacrifice for the world. As we are reminded in the passage above, when Jesus came and the gospel story was fulfilled, He literally paid for the sins of the whole world - of every single woman and man - so that people in cities would not have to be destroyed by God as a result of their sin. But God demonstrates to us the whole bulk of the stories in the Old Testament like this one with Joshua to remind us that it is important for us to pray bold prayers, even in the unknown, believing God will act on our prayers in accordance with His Word. Would you say you are a person of big belief in what God can do, even when the path is uncharted? Do you pray these types of prayers?

5. This Uncharted journey is not about raising 32 million dollars. Any of us who still think that have totally missed the point. This Uncharted journey is about 100% of us going before God and determining what a bold, believing faith into the unknown, a humble spirit, and a surrendered heart looks like as it relates to our generosity. It’s about creating a legacy that reaches beyond ourselves. It is about 100% of us laying it on the line for God and holding nothing back. Is this what you are doing for Uncharted? Is this how you have been thinking about your giving? Are you going to believe big that God is going to use you to help bring people to Him in ways He has never done before in your life? Reflect on this and share your heart, thoughts, nervousness, excitement, and prayers with your group as it relates to this.

7. Bold, humble, surrendered prayers are what move mountains for God. Would you write out some of those big prayers of belief you have for Compass in the next two years. Write them out, and then pray with your group about each one in a bold, believing fashion, believing God can and will fulfill these prayers in accordance with His Word. Write them below:

FAQsHOW DOES MY UNCHARTED COMMITMENT CHANGE MY REGULAR GIVING AND ANY ADDITIONAL GIVING? During this two-year period, every dollar given to Compass is a contribution toward our Uncharted Initiative. This means that everything — including our general ministry budget, our local and global mission work and our campus expansion projects — will be fueled by Uncharted.

WHAT ARE YOU ASKING ME TO DO? 1. Pray About Your RoleFirst and foremost, we are asking you to pray and seek God’s direction on what He is asking of you. Uncharted will be catalyzed by prayer, so please pray daily for what God will do in your life and through our church.

2. Engage in an Uncharted Life GroupWhat better way to grow, ask questions and ignite yourspiritual enthusiasm than to join a 5-week Uncharted groupwith others who are on the same journey. To register, visit compassuncharted.com/groups.

3. Discern God’s DirectionSpend time in personal reflection with God using the Uncharted book. Then, initiate healthy conversations with others about what you’re learning.

4. Make an Uncharted CommitmentWe ask that you make a significant generosity commitment that stretches your faith like never before. Be as generous as you can for the sake of leading more people to find and follow Jesus. Give in a way that changes you.

5. Mark Your Calendar for Advance Commitment Night On Friday, February 22 we will gather on the portion of our church property where the future worship center will beconstructed. This worship experience will be a defining moment for our church as we offer our commitments and pray for thenext generation that will come to know Christ at Compass.

6. Prepare to be AmazedWe are asking God for a season of personal and collectivespiritual growth that only He can generate. Open your eyes and prepare your heart to see God at work in a new way.

ARE THERE ADDITIONAL NON-MONETARY WAYS THAT I CAN GIVE TOWARD UNCHARTED? Be creative as you explore ways you and your family can givetoward the Uncharted Initiative. You might have stocks, property, or another form of stored resources with which God has blessed you and from which He might be prompting you to give. If you need assistance facilitating gifts of property or stock, pleasecontact Compass’ Executive Pastor of Operations, DonAnderson at [email protected].

HOW LONG IS MY COMMITMENT? We ask that everyone make a two-year commitment toUncharted. Your fulfillment of that commitment will begin onthe First Big Give, which takes place on April 6 & 7, 2019.Our Uncharted journey will conclude in April of 2021.

WHAT IF I AM IN DEBT RIGHT NOW?SHOULD I STILL GIVE?If you are currently making payments to eliminate debt, wecommend you for your progress on this important goal. You should continue to do so. If we can help you on the journeyto become debt-free, please let us know. Compass offersbiblically-based budget counseling, financial planning resources and “Financial Peace University” which starts in March. Please contact us if you would like to speak with a budget counselor.

However, being in debt doesn’t give us a pass on giving. Giving isn’t about what God wants from you, but what He wants for you. God instructs us to find a way to give with joy at all times, regardless of our circumstances.

WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER GIVEN TOCOMPASS BEFORE? Uncharted was crafted with you in mind. Uncharted is a one-fund generosity initiative, meaning it is different from a traditionalcapital campaign in which you are called to give an extra gift above and beyond your normal giving. Uncharted is a call tosacrificial generosity for everyone. If you have never given before, this is your chance to get in the game!

WHAT IF I AM NEW AROUND HERE? We believe the local church has the most compelling missionto which we can give our lives. We would love for you to makeCompass your church home as we seek to lead more people to find and follow Jesus through Uncharted. You can get started bysigning up for New Here Lunch and/or Discover Compass, whichhappens monthly. Go to compassaz.church to learn more.

WHAT IF I HAVEN’T BEEN BAPTIZED?Like other spiritual disciplines, giving draws us closer to God.The Bible says: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19). Whether you have taken the spiritual stepof baptism or not, we would encourage you to still join us inUncharted. We believe it will draw you closer to God andhopefully to a place where you are ready to make the decisionto surrender your life to Jesus through baptism.

HOW CAN I GIVE? We have several options for giving. One is to drop your gift via check or cash in the offering buckets as they are passed each week during our offering time. The best and easiest way to giveis to enroll in automated giving at compassaz.church/give.Another option is to fill out a giving envelope (found in seatbacks throughout the Worship Center).

WHAT IF I CANNOT FULFILL MY COMMITMENTOVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS? While your Uncharted commitment should be realistic, it should also stretch your faith (and likely your checkbook). If a personal or financial hardship changes your circumstances to a point where you’re unable to fulfill your Uncharted commitment, please let us know. We’d be honored to offer you prayer and counsel during a difficult time.
