Our philosophy is simple. What we teach and the way we teach it has one purpose – to enable you to realise your potential.

Lectures and seminars will help you achieve this. We do them, and do them well.

But you deserve more.

That’s why we have invested millions of pounds in building the facilities in which you can study, while gaining the hands-on practical skills and experience today’s employers are looking for.

That’s also why we will encourage and support you to enhance your CV through placements, work experience, studying abroad and volunteering.

Go to university and you’ll get a certificate. Come to the University of Derby and you’ll get a whole lot more besides.

2

Page 3: undergraduate prospectus 2016

www.derby.ac.uk/undergraduate

We do it in a thriving city and region with a wealth of opportunities, where you will benefit from our links with leading employers including global brands.

We’re big enough that you’ll enjoy a complete university experience, however you use your downtime. Yet we’re small enough that you’ll be treated like an individual by academics who know your

name, and where support is on-hand whenever you need it.

Our job is to nurture your talent. It’s a job we relish.

That’s our pledge to you.

That is Derby+

= infinite possibilities

Page 4: undergraduate prospectus 2016

Thank you for your interest in the University of Derby. Choosing the right university is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make and we hope you like what you see here.

At the University of Derby, we really do put you first. That’s why our prospectus is a little different. Turn the page and you’ll find we’re beginning with what matters to you most – information on our courses and subject areas. Once you’ve seen what we’re offering on our courses, keep reading to find out more about the University, its location and everything else you’ll need to know about studying here.

We pride ourselves in treating you as an individual, rather than one of a cohort of students – whether you’re studying in Derby itself, or at our Buxton or Chesterfield Campus, you’ll find a warm and welcoming environment, with small class sizes, a personal tutor and inspirational lecturers helping you to make the most of your learning experience.

You’ll also benefit from industry standard facilities for a real world learning experience that is second to none. From our own law court to crime scene house and clinical skills suite, we make sure your learning is as realistic and relevant as we

can make it. We’re also investing in facilities beyond the classroom – including a brand new multi-million pound sport centre, due to open in summer 2015.

Our location in the heart of the country puts us in a great position to offer superb links with local industry and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to make the most of this through work placements with high quality companies. We can also provide support for our more enterprising graduates who are looking to set up their own business.

All of this adds up to one thing – you get a real plus at the University of Derby, and together we can achieve great things. We hope you’ll take the next step and come and visit us on one of our open days – we look forward to welcoming you.

Professor John CoyneVice-Chancellor

Real world learningWe constantly look for ways to make our teaching relevant to your future career. Most of our tutors have industry experience and some still work part-time in industry. We have invested heavily in professional standard facilities and equipment, and we involve employers in the curriculum.

We specialise in railway, highway and water engineering, an area particularly important for the region where HS2 will be built.Organisations regularly set our students realistic architectural projects. For example, the Trevor Osborne Property Group asked our architectural students to create designs for the Grade I listed Buxton Crescent, which they hoped to re-develop as a five-star spa hotel.

Our team of criminology experts have a wealth of academic and practical experience; simply put, they have ‘been there, seen it and done it’. Our courses are practical, stimulating and career focused, and our fantastic facilities include law

courts, interview suites and a crime house. We think there is no better place to study criminology.

Work with professionalsOur lecturers are experienced scholars and researchers. Most are former practitioners, which means they have worked in agencies such as the police, probation, youth offending teams and the courts. Not only that, some modules are taught by specialists who are still working in their field including a judge, a coroner and a cyber-crime expert.

We’ll equip you with the skills that will be of interest to employers. You won’t just be sitting in lectures learning about criminology; you can become a Special Constable, undertake research within a practice setting, and visit courts, prisons and youth offender training centres to see for yourself what it takes to meet the day-to-day challenges of a criminal justice practice.

Real world learningAt Derby we teach ‘real world criminology’. You will learn how theory relates to policy and practice and work on real cases. We have excellent relationships with organisations working across the criminal justice system. This means that during your studies you’ll have

the opportunity to liaise with clients, assist the police in public order exercises, visit prisons and much more.

All of this will allow you to experience the challenges of applying criminological theory to policy and practice.

Study abroadOn our criminology degrees you can choose to spend time studying abroad to really broaden your experience and knowledge. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in an international student exchange.

Developing an international reputationOur reputation in criminology is growing. Many regional, national and international organisations approach us to work with them on projects and training.

Our partners include the Royal Malaysia Police, the College of Policing, Derby City Council, the FBI and Nottingham City Crime and Drug Partnership.

by our teachingBe inspired

Ian TurnerBiology and Forensic Science

Award-winning lecturer Dr Ian Turner is something of a science superhero. A Senior Lecturer in Biology and Forensic Sciences, Ian has been named a National Teaching Fellow – these awards recognise a small number of people each year for excellence in teaching in higher and further education. Ian is well-known among his students for his novel approach to lecturing, where his emphasis is on educating the audience

by entertaining them. Costumes, props, drama and even the odd handstand can feature in his lectures. Ian has also delivered popular public lectures, sometimes in costume, on the science behind comic book heroes’ powers, Dr Who and Star Wars.

Ian says: “Aristotle said educating the heart without educating the mind is no educating at all. I take this to heart and try and make sure my teaching is both enjoyable and enlightening by using any means necessary!”

At Derby you will be learning from tutors with industry and research expertise, who have a passion for their subject and are committed to getting the best out of you. Guest lecturers from the commercial world also bring new perspectives to your studies. With such expertise at hand, it’s not surprising that the standard of teaching is consistently rated as our strongest point in the National Student Survey.

Denis O’ConnorFine Art

Denis O’Connor has been teaching Fine Art at Derby for 20 years. Once a full-time lecturer and course leader for Fine Art, these days he strikes a balance between teaching and his own creative output. Denis’s company, Sculpture Works, creates art for public spaces both in the UK and Ireland. Alongside this, he produces work for museums and galleries.

He uses his experience beyond the classroom in his teaching. Students from the Fine Art course have been involved in a project with the National Trust at Ilam Park in Staffordshire since 1994 – here they work to interpret the natural landscape through making site-specific art works. This is one of a variety of options open to second year students – others include work with local manufacturer Rolls-Royce and with Derby Museum.

“It’s hard to survive as an artist,” says Denis, “So I like to both engage and encourage students to undertake opportunities within the wider arts network.”

Denis is also a firm believer that travel extends students’ critical and social thinking and co-ordinates European field trips to explore art and culture in cities such as Berlin, Barcelona and Madrid. “Students come back fired up from the trips,” he says. “They’re a great wayto learn.”

Becky MantonTeacher Education

Rebellious crayons and friendly giants may seem unlikely teaching aids, but Becky Manton is putting them to good use in the classroom. A University of Derby graduate, Becky (pictured left) is a former primary school teacher. She has been sharing her love of teaching with students since she became Senior Lecturer in Teacher Education in 2012. In 2013 she was awarded the University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Inspirational Lecturer of the Year.

Becky uses children’s literature, from classics such as Roald Dahl’s BFG to new picture books such as Drew Daywalt’s The Day the Crayons Quit, in every class she teaches.

Becky is passionate about her role, which she says is not making students teach a certain way, but to give them possibilities and encourage them to find their own teaching style. Becky firmly believes that learning happens all the time and that her passion for teaching comes across to her students when she teaches them.

Taiwanese graduate Chih-Hua ‘Jack’ Cheng recently completed his MA in International Hospitality Management at the University of Derby’s Buxton Campus and is now a Guest Relations Officer at Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. This Hong Kong-based hotel chain offers the ultimate in luxury hospitality.

Before moving to Buxton, Chih-Hua studied with the Swiss Hotel Management School. He said: “It was a dream for me to come here and study at the University of Derby. It has given me the opportunity to develop my skills and

learn so much about the hospitality industry. The course is great as it offers a good balance between theory and practical work and my personal tutor and other students have been very supportive in making Buxton feel like a second home.”

Chih-Hua’s sister, Yu-En ‘Irene’ Cheng, was so impressed with her brother’s stories of the University and life in Derbyshire that she chose to move to the UK in July to pursue her own hospitality management career.

Mikaela became interested in events at the age of eight and applied to the University of Derby at the age of 18 to pursue her interest.

As part of her degree she helped organise the National Student Events Conference where she invited speakers from Glastonbury Festival, and the ExCeL and Olympia exhibition centres in London. Mikaela founded the International Students Society in Buxton where her enthusiasm grew not only for events but also for international student affairs.

Her degree made her the best candidate when, thanks to one of her lecturers, she got the opportunity to work as an International Student Advisor helping international students settle into life in the UK.

Mikaela said: ‘I am extremely happy with my choice of degree because it has provided me with a variety of skills which I can apply to a range of jobs. The best thing about my job is helping international students settle in to a new place just like I once did. It is incredibly rewarding!’

DERBY

A well-connected city

Derby is the UK’s most central city and is at the heart of the transport network:

90 minutes to London

10 minutes to the M1

20 minutes to East Midlands Airport

4 hours to Paris

Derby at a glance Population of 250,000 48% under 35 years The safest city in the East Midlands Highest average salary outside London.

A young, dynamic cityDerby is a relatively small city, but one that is increasingly popular with young people due to promising job prospects and affordable living. With global companies such as Bombardier, Rolls-Royce and Toyota on its door step, it’s no wonder that 12% of Derby employees are in hi-tech functions – four times the national average.

Friendly, lively and multicultural Shopping: you’ll find big brands like Apple,

Starbucks, Wagamama and Topshop in the Intu shopping centre, while the historic Cathedral Quarter is home to stylish boutiques and independent cafés

Sport: You can watch live events at Derby County Football Club, Derbyshire County Cricket Club and the new Derby Arena – which includes a velodrome

104

Page 105: undergraduate prospectus 2016

Culture: Derby has a growing cultural scene, including QUAD – a centre for art and film, Déda – the only dedicated dance house in the East Midlands, and several interesting museums and galleries. It also hosts Derby Festé, a spectacular outdoor event combining music, performance, dance, film and more

Nightlife: The city is home to a handful of theatres and live music venues, including the University-owned Derby Theatre. There are plenty of bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants in the city centre, which cater for all tastes - from cocktail drinkers to craft beer connoisseurs, and from alternative music fans to house music and RnB lovers

Outdoors: The Peak District National Park is only a short drive away, offering miles of inspiring countryside, magnificent stately homes and exhilarating outdoor activities, such as abseiling, kayaking and rock climbing.

A bright futureDerby has received significant investment in the last few years thanks to a £2 billion regeneration masterplan. Future developments include:

An Olympic sized swimming pool £20 million hi-tech focussed

Derby CampusMost of our courses are based at our busy Derby Campus, which has three sites:

Kedleston Road Britannia Mill Markeaton Street.

You might have classes at one or more of these sites depending on what course you are studying. It’s easy to walk between all three and they are all in safe residential areas on the outskirts of the city centre.

Learning facilitiesThe University’s main library is at Kedleston Road and this stocks thousands of books, journals, special collections, DVDs and other media, over several floors. You can use a range of equipment in this library: computers, printers, photocopiers and scanners, and you can loan out laptops, DVD and video players from here too.

There are lots of different areas to study in and these are zoned so that group discussions don’t disturb those who need a quiet place to work. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building as is accessibility equipment, such as rise and fall desks, screen readers, text magnifiers, specialist software and overlays.

Britannia Mill has one of the best art and design libraries in the UK, including a large collection of artists’ books and art slides.

We’ve invested millions of pounds in our real world learning facilities including:

A 350-person capacity courtroom for our law courses

A crime scene car and house for our forensics courses

An NHS standard clinical skills suite Derby Theatre, a working theatre where our

Theatre Arts students are based.

Other facilitiesThe Kedleston Road site is where you’ll find most of Derby Campus’s other facilities, including shops, cash machines and a variety of places to buy hot and cold food.

The Student Employment Agency and the Employability and Enterprise Hub are based here too, and will help you prepare for your future career and find part-time work.

A brand new multi-million pound sports centre will open at Kedleston Road in summer 2015.

For me, the Derby Campus is absolutely perfect. It’s not too big but in no way too small, and the friendly atmosphere from within the University and in the city itself has made it truly feel like home for me.

BUXTONA creative townThe proportion of Buxton’s working population employed in the creative industries is more than double the average for this region. The town hosts a number of renowned arts festivals each year, including Buxton Festival Fringe – which many artists use as a preview before appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

An adventurous townBuxton is surrounded on three sides by the Peak District National Park, so it has become a centre for adventure sports, including abseiling, mountain biking, horse riding, scuba diving and rock climbing.

A university townThe large student population means that Buxton has a good selection of amenities for a town of its size, including a club that hosts a weekly student night. Buxton Opera House hosts theatre, comedy, music, dance and (of course) opera, and the summer festivals really boost the town’s cultural offerings.

Buxton at a glance

Buxton CampusOur Buxton Campus provides the perfect backdrop for real world learning.

Learning facilities: The Devonshire Spa, a commercial spa which

acts as a classroom for our Spa Management students and is open to the general public

The Dome Restaurant, which serves delicious, contemporary dishes prepared and served by our students

The Devonshire Library Our Harpur Hill Sports Centre has a fitness

suite and gym, space for various sports and an outdoor climbing wall

Oaklands Manor is our 58 acre adventure activities centre and home to our exciting outdoor courses.

I think the beauty and heritage of the town is captured within the Dome itself. It reflects the serenity of Buxton and is very different from a city campus. The Buxton Campus is intimate and you have access to the wonderful facilities used by other courses, such as the spa, restaurant and the college hair and beauty salons. Our classes are a lot smaller than usual, allowing you to really get to know your course mates and allowing your lecturers to get to know you.

At the moment the campus only houses students on the adult nursing degree, so it’s specifically designed for our needs. It contains a brand new clinical skills suite, so we can use up-to-date facilities when simulating practice. There are also numerous good-sized lecture rooms and a library/computer suite for quiet study, and the small class sizes mean you get more support from fellow students and tutors, which is invaluable. There are plans to upgrade the facilities further and the links between other campuses and neighbouring universities are improving too. I would certainly encourage prospective students to study here.

If you want to get involved while you are studying, there are loads of chances for you to do so. You can be a programme rep on your course, a college rep for all of your college or a part-time officer where you will represent a certain student group, for example, student parents, or LGBT students. You can make real change while you are here and the Union is the thing that enables you to do so.

We listen to the University of Derby students and if you think there is something we need to be focusing on, tell us, and it is our job to do it. A Students’ Union is pretty cool and we like to think Derby is up there with the coolest of them all. Make sure you get involved however you want to.

There are two types of cost you’ll need to consider:

Tuition feesThe fee reflects the actual cost of delivering the course and covers all equipment and activities. You will find all your textbooks in the library. This means that you will not have to find additional cash during the year for anything other than your living expenses.

Classroom-based courses:£10,900 per year- international student fee£8,500 per year - EU student feeThese courses are delivered in a lecture theatre or seminar room and do not involve any specialist facilities or equipment.

Resource intensive courses:£11,190 per year- international student fee£9,000 per year- EU student feeThese courses use more resources so we reflect this in the tuition fee.

All figures quoted may be subject to change. See our website for the most up-to-date information: www.derby.ac.uk

Living costsIn addition to tuition fees, you’ll need to budget for your living costs, including accommodation, food, bills and entertainment.

How fees work for EU studentsYou don’t have to pay your fees up front. When you accept a place at Derby you can then apply to the Student Loans Company for a loan to cover your tuition fees. You don’t need to repay anything until you have graduated and your salary has reached a specific level (in 2015/16 this is £21,000 per year). If you never reach that salary level, you won’t pay anything back.

If you do reach that salary level, you’ll pay back 9% each month of any income over £21,000. So, if you were earning £25,000 you would pay back £30 a month. You pay interest on your loan until it is paid back in full. After 30 years, any outstanding debt is written off.

Money matters – going to university is a real investment in your future and it’s good to know the full facts up front.

FEES AND FUNDING

Loans and bursaries for EU students Full-time EU undergraduates can receive some financial support.

You’ll be able to get a loan to help cover your tuition fees. You will need to apply for the student loan from the Student Finance Services European Team in Darlington.

You may be eligible for a £500 bursary if: You are a full-time EU student Your household's income is less than £15,000

per annum.

If you are eligible for a bursary, you must apply for this at the same time as you apply for your student loan. You need to submit a EU15B form. Unfortunately, this money isn't available for advanced standing students as you must be studying in the first year of your degree.

All figures quoted are for 2015/16. For the latest information, see: www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

If you pay your fees in full by enrolment you will receive a £500 discount on all courses.

ApplyingInternational students can apply for free through our website: www.derby.ac.uk/undergraduate/applying

Make sure you don’t miss the key dates in your university application.

Here’s our guide to what happens if you apply through UCAS:

We attend a number of overseas education exhibitions and visit many countries throughout the year. At these events, we can give you and your parent’s advice on our courses, and studying and living in Derby. Please check our website http://www.derby.ac.uk/international/country/events/

Make sure you allow plenty of time to research and decide on your course choice before you apply. We accept international applications until July. In some cases, we may be able to accept late applications, but you should aim to apply by mid-July. Some courses will fill up fast so you should apply straight away to avoid disappointment.

At our Open Days you get a feel for what university life is really like.

Come and visit us on one of our 2015 Open Days. You will be able to:• Meet our staff and students• Take a tour of our campuses, facilities and

student accommodation• Attend our talks to find out more about

courses, applying, fees and accommodation

Open Days take place on the same day at our Derby and Buxton campuses. We understand that it is hard for international students to visit the UK for Open Days, but if you are able to join us, this is a great opportunity for you to see the University at first hand.

Please note that Open Days at our Chesterfield Campus are held separately – visit www.derby.ac.uk to find out more.

Make the most of your visitWhen you book onto an Open Day we’ll send you a guide with all the information you need to plan your day. It’s worth taking a look at the timings of talks and tours so that you can get the most out of your visit.

Think about what you want to find out on the day. Here are a few questions you might want to ask:

• How many hours of teaching are there?• Can I get work experience or go on a work

placement?• How many students will be on the same

course?• Will I need to write a dissertation in my final

year?• What are the facilities like in my

department?• What sports clubs are available?• What is the accommodation like?• What is the social life like on campus and in

the town?• What financial support is available?
