Emily Barnick,MexicoEmily Barnick is from Mexicoand took French andGerman at EBS London. Before studying at EBSLondon, she was alreadyfluent in three languages.

“When I arrived at EBS London, I didn’t know

anyone at the school”, states Emily. “However,

because of the small-sized campus, it is easy to

fit in, and the students and staff are very friendly

and helpful. One of the best things about EBS

London is the language teaching. I felt very well-

prepared for my study periods abroad.”

Andreea Petrisor,Romania“For me EBS London was the

point of no return. I got more

than I ever expected in terms of

academic knowledge, experi-

ence, friends and, most of all, life. The school is

great because all the theory learned is also

applied in different real and current case studies.

This helps develop a lot of skills which are crucial

in the business world, such as working in a team,

the ability to make a good presentation or to work

under pressure. The environment helps me practise

my language skills because in every corner of this

school I can hear different languages. Also, as part

LCP: Leadership, Creative Management, Psychology

EBS London offers innovative option modules

not usually found on a traditional business

degree programme. Within its multi-cultural

practical framework, LCP encourages creativity

and innovation with a range of learning experi-

ences.

The LCP Experience (a combination of

Leadership and Management, Creative

Management, Psychology and Dramatic Arts

modules) exists to link business theory to man-

agerial practice. Leadership and Management is

a final year core module, whereas Creative

Management (final year course), as well as

Psychology and Dramatic Arts (first year

course), are both option modules. Psychology

and Dramatic Arts students are led (‘directed’)

by LCP final year students to encourage a

‘reward system’ which enhances personal

growth processes. Each year LCP students set

up Short Film Competitions, Dramatic Plays,

Fashion Shows, Arts Exhibitions and Music

Concerts, in partnership – and in competition

– with dramatists, publishers, filmmakers, musi-

cians, actors, fashion designers and

broadcasters. LCP strives to establish higher

management quality through the development

of its advanced creative products. Working

together with cinemas, theatres, galleries, pro-

duction studios and TV channels, LCP short

films have been shown in London, Berlin and

Cannes. LCP’s major objective is to unite dif-

ferent styles within a defined framework and

to provide a platform for young talented

artists to exhibit. For example, twice a year

arts exhibitions at the Zizi Gallery in Mayfair,

London, present sculptures, paintings, photog-

raphy or computer-based graphical projects

involving improvisational transformation of

business-related information. Working together

with internal as well as external artists, LCP

encourages awareness of emerging talents.

LCP fosters a self-directed, autonomous

learning approach where students are fully

responsible for progress made. For further

information about the work of LCP, please

contact LCP Module Leader, Birgit Wildt:

EBS London offers a range of innovative option modules not usually found on a traditional business

degree programme. Within its multi-cultural practical framework, LCP encourages creativity and innova-

tion within a range of learning experiences.

The face is the human species' basic common language - universally understood and instantaneously recog-nised. I want high visibility with maximum exposure for my images, and aim to achieve this literally ' diffusive 'effect through a set of postcards, posters, and booklets which can easily be mailed, stuck on a wall, or flickedthrough on a lounge table. Each drawing has a hatching technique typical of etching, but is in fact simplyexecuted using basic ink pens. This allows anybody who has ever held a pen to directly identify with thechosen medium and the artist's ' etat d'esprit ' at that moment

“There is no longer any doubt that in a glob-

alised economy the successful pursuit of

business requires multilingual and multicultural

knowledge and expertise. So, whatever job you

seek, having a thorough knowledge of a foreign

language in its business context will provide you

with a remarkable competitive edge and will

prove to be an excellent professional asset. At

EBS London we are proud of the wide range of

languages we offer.”

Josef Müller, Co-ordinator for Languages

Chinese is the largest official language in the

world. China’s economy has been growing at

about 10% per year for nearly thirty years.

Moreover, the joining of the WTO in 2000 has

highlighted China as a key growth area for

international trade and partnership develop-

ment, making it the fourth largest exporting

and the third largest importing nation.

Spanish is the world’s second largest interna-

tional language, with more than 400 million

speakers in more than 20 countries (including

over 40 million in the US). With sustained

growth rates of over 3% annually, Spain is one

of the fastest growing economies in the

Eurozone. The countries of Latin America are

currently competing successfully in many indus-

tries in the world market. The existence of

regional trade agreements such as NAFTA

(TLCAN) and MERCOSUR, together with the

region’s optimistic stance towards globalisation,

evidences the importance of this large trade

area. Furthermore, the Hispanic community -

with its growing success in many areas of

business - is the largest and fastest growing

minority in the USA, making Spanish the

second language in the USA.

French is one of the official languages of the

European Union and Canada. It is also one of

the leading languages in Europe and other

continents with 113 million Francophones

worldwide. In many countries of the Middle

East, the Far East and Africa, the French

language still enjoys a privileged position in

administration, commerce and business due to

old cultural ties with France and the existence

of a large French-speaking population in these

states. On an international level, after English,

French is the most commonly taught second

language in the world today.

With over 100 million speakers, more people

speak German as their native language than

any other language in Europe. Not only the

residents of Germany speak German, it is also

an official language of Austria, Switzerland,

Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. In addition to

that, around 20 million people are learning

German as a foreign language worldwide.

Germany was the world’s largest exporting

nation in 2003-2005, ahead of the USA, and is

the number one trade partner of many

economies, including Italy, France and Russia.

Two-thirds of the world's leading international

trade fairs take place in Germany, so there is

no doubt that knowing German creates

business opportunities.

All undergraduate students at EBS London study languages as a compulsory part of the BA (Hons)

International Business degree programme. You can study one or two languages, including one as a complete

beginner if you wish, choosing from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish.

Italian means business, as well as culture. With

its roots in Rome and the Latin world, the

Italian language and culture offers a unique

combination of art and technology. Italy offers

golden business opportunities. Having started

the privatisation process only recently,

compared to its European counterparts, very

profitable markets for banks and financial insti-

tutions are being opened up. Key industries are

varied and diverse, and include fashion, design,

the automotive industry, and of course food

and catering.

Japanese is the native tongue of the world’s

second-largest economy and increasingly

widely spoken as a second language around

the Pacific Rim. The Nikkei trades a larger

volume of stocks than any other exchange in

the world each day, and many of the world’s

top business organisations are Japanese.

Portuguese, with over 200 million native

speakers in the world, is the sixth most spoken

language and the third most spoken European

language (after English and Spanish) in the

world. It is the official language of 7 countries

and a major lingua franca in Africa. Culturally

and commercially, the place of Portuguese in

the world is undeniably relevant due to Brazil’s

growing economic presence. With Brazil’s lead

role in the Southern Latin American Common

Market and Portugal’s membership in the

European Union since 1986, Portuguese is

today widely taught both in Europe and South

America.

Russia is beginning to realise its enormous

business potential (with the largest oil and gas

reserves of any country in the world) and

many important multinational companies have

bases in Moscow or in other cities. Russian is

understood across Eastern Europe and is

widely used in the central Asian republics such

as Uzbekistan and Khazakstan.

9

The European Business School London

Born in the western corner

of Austria that borders on

Germany and Switzerland,

Philipp Lehner developed an

awareness of multiculturalism

from his early days. After fin-

ishing school, and having completed his military

service in Austria, he went to spend time in

South America, first a few months in Buenos

Aires, then backpacking through what he calls

“the continent of passion and enormously rich

nature”. He returned to Europe a year later

and started his degree in International Business

at the European Business School in London,

attracted by the course offer, the range of lan-

guages, and the location. “As foreign languages I

took Spanish, to maintain my freshly acquired

language skills, and also Chinese, to throw myself

at the next challenge.” He is going to spend his

Study Period Abroad for two semesters in

Nanjing, China. So far he has already complet-

ed work placements with ‘Credit Suisse’, ‘RS

Consulting’ and ‘Alpla’, all in the UK, and

‘Wipro New Logic’ in Austria. When being

asked to state three adjectives representing his

personality, he says “energetic, respectful to the

individual and hungry for knowledge on the

academic, as well as the life experience side”.

Looking into the future, he sees himself suc-

cessfully applying his international life

experiences and practical knowledge of

business itself, acquired through internships

and studies, to his own business.

The combination of marketing and languages is

particularly valuable. Communication strategies of major

organisations are increasingly multinational, multilingual

marketing disasters when slogans were translated from

one language to another or inappropriate product names

were launched into a disbelieving new market. Our

graduates will be well prepared to avoid such

embarrassing incidents with the set of skills provided in

The two half-scholarships cover half the tuition

fees for the three and a half year BA (Hons)

International Business course. These special

prizes have been established to celebrate the

international spirit of EBS London. The panel

of judges from EBS London will be looking for

a creative and research-based approach to

your work. The winning entry should be inter-

esting and thought-provoking, and should not

exceed eight double-spaced pages in length.

To enter the competition for the EBSLInternational Business Scholarship 2008-2009,please answer one of the following questions:

1. The wealthy and successful retailer, Sir Philip

Green, gave the following advice on a career in

business (The Independent, July 2007):

a. Stick to what you know

b. Plug in (to information and

general knowledge)

c. Get a feel for trends

d. Take risks

e. Don’t think about what you can’t do

f. Say ‘come and see me’

g. Work hard

h. Even tycoons need R & R

(rest & relaxation)

Comment on this advice and, following appro-

priate research, make any other suggestions

you consider to be applicable to success in

business and management.

2.Many EBS London graduates start their own

businesses immediately after graduation – a

how the new business venture will be funded

and how it will attract customers.

3.One of the most difficult areas of corporate

conduct relates to the lines where the norms

of ethical behaviour are crossed. For example,

what is the dividing line between using the

company photocopier to make copies of

personal documents and defrauding an inter-

national company of millions of dollars through

devious accounting procedures? Discuss this

proposition in relation to ethics in international

business, citing recent and relevant examples

and giving your own views on ethical conduct

in business.

4.The motto of the Chartered Institute of

Linguists is “Universal Understanding.” The

Institute seeks to promote the view that one

of the prime keys to understanding other

peoples and cultures is knowledge and ability

in the appropriate language. Discuss the

meaning of the motto, invent any other appro-

priate mottos, and explain why you think that

language learning is essential for greater uni-

versal understanding. In researching and writing

your essay, you can discuss your own experi-

ence of other peoples and their cultures, of

languages, and of language learning.

5. In the last few years, there has been a ren-

aissance of “economic patriotism” within world

trade. Certain countries in particular have

sought to protect their own industries. Give

relevant examples of “economic patriotism”

and discuss the theoretical context and practi-

cal effects of this on the conduct of world trade.

Winner, EBSL International Business

Scholarship 2007-2008

“I chose EBSL because the

education I receive here truly

equips me with the necessary

skills to launch into the inter-

national business world. It was the scholarship

application process that convinced me and gave

me the confidence that I made the right decision.

Writing my project was a pleasure because it

brought me on two journeys - one through the

wide fields of Asian and European business, and

the other to EBS London where I got amazing

ideas and perspectives from other application

essays.”

Amber Hercules, Trinidad and Tobago

Half-Scholarship Winner 2007-2008

“It's my desire to be a

business catalyst - someone

who suggests strategies which

take business to a greater level

of success. EBSL is the place to

learn about these strategies and to develop the

critical thinking that leads to such an inventive

decision-making approach. On the scholarship

presentations day the interaction between the

presenters was fantastic. We came from very

diverse countries and had done different essays.

The panel was warm and receptive, and it was a

wonderful and unique challenge.”

Maximilian Georgallides, UK

Half-Scholarship Winner 2007-2008

“I found the Scholarship

process extremely rewarding.

Writing a business plan for a

‘Brasserie Parissiene’ gave me

the perfect opportunity to

bring together knowledge and skills that I have

acquired from my experience within the hospitali-

ty industry. I enjoyed the challenge that was set

before me and I found it exciting to present my

business plan to the judges. I was overwhelmed

to have been awarded the half-scholarship, and I

was especially delighted by the enthusiasm

shown towards my project.”

EBS London will make every reasonable effort,

within the resources available, to support reg-

istered students with a disability or learning

difficulty.

Prospective students are given the opportunity

to disclose any disability or learning difficulty

on their Application Form. The Admissions

Officer, working with the Head of Student

Support, will discuss specific requirements

related to a disability or learning difficulty with

the applicant. All discussions and information

regarding a disability or learning difficulty will

be treated in a confidential manner.

Students with dyslexia or a specific learning

difficulty are required to provide the necessary

documentation, such as an educational psy-

chologist’s report or equivalent, if they wish to

receive additional support. The assessment

should have been carried out no more than

two years prior to the student joining the pro-

gramme. If it is in a foreign language, an English

translation must be provided.

Any data collected regarding students’ disabili-

ties or learning difficulties is stored on the

only be accessed by authorised personnel.

In accordance with the Disability

of Practice for the Assurance of Academic

Quality, Section 3, Students with Disabilities

(1999), Regent’s College is currently undertak-

ing an extensive refurbishment and building

programme to improve access to and within

its buildings. This is a continuing programme to

facilitate and improve access to almost any

part of the college via ramps, lifts and auto-

matic doors. Installation for better signage and

The International Business Forum, founded by

a group of EBS London students in 1988,

provides students with an opportunity to par-

ticipate in seminars, discussion groups, lectures

and dinners with captains of industry.

The IBF is dedicated to forging close links

between students and businesses at board-

room level, through social occasions and

applied projects. Since 1988, the Forum has

grown in ambition and scope each year, inviting

chairmen, chief executives and senior politi-

cians to EBS London to meet IBF members

and students. These meetings take the form of

lecture discussions, workshops and company

visits. At each session, Forum members and

students analyse business problems together

with the guest speaker and develop their

appreciation of how key business decisions are

made at a senior level.

The faculty and management of EBS London

have given their full support to the

International Business Forum since its founda-

tion. The Forum is a vital part of your

experience at EBS London and we strongly

encourage you to get involved. You can find

out more about the IBF at

Each Spring and Autumn, EBS London hosts

European and International Lectures for its

collective stakeholders. They provide an oppor-

tunity to hear prominent global business

people and public figures from a broad

spectrum of backgrounds speak on issues of

current and future importance to world

business and the economy.

Whether a panel discussion or individual

speaker, each lecture enables the audience to

participate through a question and answer

platform and the opportunity to network with

fellow guests during the post - lecture drinks

reception.

The reputation of the EBS London lectures,

attended by about 400 invited guests including

Ambassadors and senior business executives

from leading international companies and gov-

ernment agencies, has built a strong diplomatic,

business and political network for the school.

The Lecture series additionally provides an

opportunity for the business community to

meet EBS London students and alumni,

offering them a first hand introduction to the

Global Managers of the future.

The Jean Monnet Memorial series began fol-

lowing the European Council’s naming of 1988

as ‘Jean Monnet Year’. An important figure sup-

porting the cause for a united Europe,

Monnet’s life spanned the most pivotal histori-

cal events influencing post-war Europe. He

became the first president of the High

Authority of ECSC but left in 1955 to head an

action committee for a united Europe. Made

an ‘honorary citizen’ of Europe in 1976, he

died in 1979. Jean Monnet’s motto was:

"keep going, keep going, there is nofuture for the people of Europeexcept in union."

Sir Leon Brittan, then EC Commissioner, gave

the first Jean Monnet Lecture at EBS London

on 3 March 1989 on "The Future of an Open

Europe". He returned as Vice President of the

EU to give the 10th Jean Monnet lecture in

1998 on "The EU: preparing for the 21st

Century".

With over 2000 alumni working in more than

80 countries in a wide variety of industries, our

alumni continue to play an important role in

the life of the School long after they graduate.

Alumni clubs throughout the world ensure the

continued strength of the Association and its

unique networking opportunities. The Alumni

are fully supported by the EBS London Alumni

and Corporate Relations team, who assist with

gatherings and meetings around the world, and

offer continuing professional support through-

out their careers. EBS London sits at the

centre of a valuable network of alumni

contacts to which we welcome all EBS London

graduates.

Alumni as AmbassadorsAlumni are ambassadors for EBS London and

play an important role promoting the School

within the organisations in which they work.

Alumni, many of whom were offered their first

job after graduation as a result of the positive

impression they had made during their work

placements, play a key role in helping the

School identify opportunities for students on

all our degree programmes. EBS London

alumni know better than anyone what unique

qualities graduates of the School can bring to

an organisation, and what a difference they can

make. They are, therefore, at the forefront of

encouraging their employers to visit the

School year after year and actively recruit from

each new cohort of graduates. When you start

your first job after graduation, you may well

owe a debt of thanks to our alumni for their

help.

EBS London Alumni MentoringIn addition, through our Alumni Mentoring

scheme our alumni offer an invaluable source

of advice for students seeking help, whether

for career information and guidance, assistance

with study projects, information on companies,

cultural information or just a friendly voice

who understands EBS London and its unique

programmes of study.

Receiving feedback on the changing needs of

the business environment enables us to

learning experience to our students. Our

alumni play an important part in this process

in ensuring the integrity and relevancy of our

You will complete your degree as a person

with the added value of self-awareness. Your

grasp of business principles will be sound, and

your practical experience will have empow-

ered you to be both capable and confident.

You will be eminently employable.

You should ask yourself:Who am I? What are my ambitions?

What kind of career do I want to have?

What kind of organisation do I want to

work for? Do I want to start my own

business venture?

What unique mix of knowledge, skills and

abilities will I bring to that organisation?

What are my strengths, values and

motivation?

As you determine the direction of your future

career, our Careers Guidance and Internship

Services will offer you help, guidance and

coaching for success, as defined by you,

– for you.

Once you have worked out your chosen

career path, the next task is to sell yourself

effectively. You will have three distinct advan-

tages.

Firstly, you will have the EBS London name on your degree certificate. As many of our previous graduates have found, it is a name held in very high regard by top organisations around the world. It is a namethat ‘shouts’ business and linguistic abilities.

Secondly, you will have the international network of EBS London graduates. Some recruit directly and others give help and advice to current undergraduates. Many more are simply spreading the School’s reputation for excellence, paving the way for you and other new graduates to follow them into top jobs in leading business organisations.

Thirdly, you will have the expert and experienced assistance of our Careers Guidance and Internship Services. The great strength of our international team is that by the time you are ready to graduate, they will know you very well. They will havediscussed your career plans with you in your first and second years, and helped youidentify suitable organisations for your 36 weeks of internships. They will have listenedto your feedback – and that of your host organisation – and helped you refine your choices and take appropriate next steps foryour career development. You will have an individual work experience and career objective programme which will build up steadily from the day you join EBS London to the day you graduate.

You may already have career plans before you embark on the programme and, as soon as you join, we

will begin working with you on preparations for the future.

Nine Steps to a Successful Future

During your EBS London degree you will be able to:-

1. Refine your CV with assistance from our

Careers Guidance and Internship Services

(CGIS)

2. Sign up for individual career counselling

sessions

3. Choose the electives best suited to your

chosen career

4. Identify target employers in your chosen

career area

5. Start sending your CV to target employers

6. Attend workshops and mock interviews

7. Schedule interviews with target employers

8. Use CGIS resources to help prepare for

your interviews

9. Our Professional Development Portfolio

designed by EBS London sets SMART

objectives to keep you ‘on track’ and

help monitor your progress

“University careers and internship services are

traditionally separate – one providing information

for final year students, while the other secures

work placements as part of a degree pro-

gramme. Some university careers services offer

an information library and careers counselling.

Others offer workshops on CV writing and inter-

view techniques. Few, however, bring all of these

activities together in one focused and co-ordinat-

ed service, helping you to market yourself

proactively to employers. EBS London’s CGIS have

recently opened a new international resource

centre with international staff, thus further

improving the quality of the service.”

Simon Hamm - Head of EBS London CareersGuidance and Internship Services

Simon Hamm is a member of the UK Institute

of Careers Guidance and the Strategic

Planning Society. He is President of the

London Chapter of the Association of Career

Professionals International and is also a Past

Chairman of the Placements in Industry

challenging. Those who

Ability to read widely and critically across

business disciplines

awareness of ideas and practices

Exercise of sound business judgement
