Season Preview 3Coming off a 4–15 record during the 2013 campaign,

the University of Northern Iowa Women’s Soccer team has all the motivation that needs for the 2014 season.

“It is our main motivation to prove people wrong,” junior defender Katie Witt said. “On campus, our fans, our coaches, even us. I think were using it as our biggest motivation.”

LAST SEASONHead coach James Price returns for his sixth season

where he hopes to bring his Panther squad back into the fold.

“For wins and losses, we were disappointed,” Price said about the 2013 season. “The players were, coaches were, and I think our fans were.”

However, despite the record, there were positives amongst last season. UNI was in the mix in each match, having led or been tied with their opponent heading into the second half of matches, 15 out of 19 matches.

“Those who came and really watched us, we attacked way more last season than we ever have,” Price said. “Once we were able to step back and analyze how things turned out, we realized that we are not that far from where we want to be.”

THIS YEAR2014 is a new year, a new season, and a new group

of players. This year’s roster includes a senior class of six with a new transfer from Texas, Teresa Offerman, and returning players such as Charlotte Jones and All-Confer-ence midfielder, Caitlyn Fuller.

From this group of seniors comes plenty of leadership and talent.

“They’re a great group, a hard-working group, and they are very mature,” Price said. “They’ve been a plea-sure to work with. Caitlyn and Charlotte are probably our most vocal leaders, and they certainly are our most dy-namic players. So when you watch them play you can see them running all over the place.”

Along with a stout senior class, comes plenty of ex-perience from the junior and sophomore classes. Players such as junior forward Brady Clark and junior midfielder Maggie Riley have seen a lot of minutes, having both played in all 19 games last season. Riley returns to the team having led the Panthers in assists last season. Riley will be accompanied by junior midfielder Maddie Welch, who returns after leading the team in goals last fall.

START OF PRACTICEThrough the first part of practice, players have been

focusing on conditioning and mentally preparing for the season. The biggest thing that Price’s squad has gained in the off season is mental strength.

“We worked a lot on mental strength and just getting fitter and stronger,” Price said. “Living in Iowa we are re-stricted a lot on what we can do in the spring, so we re-ally bunker down and focus on the things we can.”

The results have been noticed thus far in practice.“We’ve started off well,” Price said. “Very good. Very

positive. The attitude has been really good. Everybody is in really good shape so we can do a lot of different things.”

OUTWORKING THE OPPONENTPhysical conditioning came up as a big part of this

team’s plan for success. In fact, it is something that the players feel as though it is something they want to be recognized for.

“We definitely want to be seen as hard-working,” Welch said. “Our coaches are trying to make us a team that can run other teams off of the field. A team that can play 90 minutes-plus.”

The coaching staff has agreed on this same idea. For this team to win, they will have to out work their oppo-nent every time.

“We are an honest, hard-working team.” Price said. “If we play someone that is better than we are, we accept that, but we don’t want to be out worked and we don’t want to be a team that gets beat because we did not put in the effort. That’s the way to characterize our girls. They are an honest group that works extremely hard. It is a pleasure working with them because we get that every day from them.”

In terms of how that will look out on the field, Price said “We want to score, certainly; but we also do not want to concede any [goals] either. If we give up two or three, we won’t be scoring four goals in many games to turn that around. So it is a balancing act.”

COMING TOGETHER“The team knows, that this is going to be a team.”

Price said. “We don’t have a player that can score 20 goals alone. The team has to do this.”

The principle of a “team effort” has gotten to the play-ers as well. This season, the Panthers consist of a evenly balanced class ratio. With six seniors, seven juniors, six sophomores, and eight freshmen this team hopes to find something that may have been missing last season.

“I feel like our team is really meshing well,” Welch said. “It’s not so much separated this year into juniors, se-

niors and freshmen any more” echoed Witt. “We’re all just trying to come together this year and make it about the team.”

FRESH FACES“We have freshmen coming in that I think will help us,”

sophomore defender Mary Brandt said. “I think we have a group that can build on each other to give a good attack.”

This year’s freshman class features eight players such as Julianne Trizzino, a defender from Bettendorf, Iowa, and Marianne Gagne, a forward from Saint-Jeanr-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, that bring a lot of goal scoring and a winning attitude. Gagne was the top scorer and recog-nized as MVP of the AAA league (highest level in Quebec) in 2011 and 2012. Fellow freshman midfielder Natalie Lotz from Wichita, Kansas was an all-conference player in her state three years including being named an MVP two years.

“In terms of what they are going to offer, we’ve got forwards, midfielders, defenders and a goalkeeper. So they will either add great depth or a couple will probably start,” Price said.

“It’s down to them, if they want to start they have to show us, and if you’re good enough then you’re old enough,” Price said.

A PEEK OF THE SCHEDULEThis year’s schedule has plenty of great matches to

look forward to for Panther fans. UNI’s first match is against Iowa, a team that UNI took to overtime last year,

followed by a rematch against St. Ambrose, a team the UNI shut out last season in Waterloo. On September 12, UNI will see a new face, Illinois-Chicago, who is in its inaugural season as a program. UNI will begin its con-ference play against Drake on Oct. 4. Last season, UNI topped Drake in a 1-0 shutout in Des Moines.

EXPECTATIONSAs for the expectations for this team, junior defender

Sarah McHugh simply put it best, “Better than last year.”Welch agreed with McHugh with the expectation that

is amongst this team is to make it to the Missouri Valley Conference tournament that starts Nov. 2. Something that the players feel is “most definitely” possible.

Coach Price described similar expectations.“I do not want to sound cliché but we are going to take

this one game at a time” Price said. “We don’t have any massive plans. But I certainly feel that conference-wise we can be in the mix. We are right in the pack. If we can get into the post season then who knows.”

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TOBefore looking too far ahead though, this team has

reasons to be excited.“I think just getting into the games again, Witt said.

“I love the atmosphere and the feeling it gives you. Just going out there and representing your school and your team. I love that.”

“I love home games,” McHugh said. “We want to get our fans back out there. And show them what this UNI team can do.”

WHAT FANS SHOULD WANT TO SEEPrice also had some words to give to Panther fans as to

why they should come out this fall.“I truly think that our soccer team represents what this

school stands for,” he said. “If you come and cheer on the team then you’d be proud of UNI, because we represent everything that UNI stands for,” Price said. “I can guar-antee you’ll see a team that works extremely hard and is representing the school in the best way possible.”

UNI will open the 2014 season on August 12th with an exhibition game at Ashford at 6 p.m. Followed by its first home exhibition against Clarke on Aug. 16th at 7 p.m. All home matches are played at Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in Waterloo, Iowa.

James PriceHead CoachSixth SeasonCareer Record: 114-174-25 Record at UNI: 26-57-10

University of Northern Iowa head women’s soccer coach James Price is beginning his sixth season at the helm of the Panther women’s soccer program.

Price has guided the Panthers to a winning improvement in each of his four years in the Missouri Valley Conference - capped by a 3-2-2 mark in MVC play in 2012. The Panthers hosted their first-ever MVC Tournament game in 2012.

During the 2011 campaign, Price earned his 100th career victory with a 1-0 win over Evansville. The win came during a five-game win streak, the longest in program history. The Panthers also earned a trip to the MVC Tournament for the fifth time in school history; the first under Price. UNI was tabbed with the 6th-seed and traveled to face the No. 3-seeded Creighton Bluejays in Omaha, Neb. The Panthers earned the victory over Creighton on penalty kicks, 5-3, after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. UNI was defeated 2-1 in the semifinals of the MVC tournament in overtime by the hosts and no. 2-seeded Missouri State Bears.

Price was named the women’s soccer coach at UNI by Director of Athletics Troy Dannen on Dec. 22, 2008. After the 2010 campaign, Price received a contract extension making him the head coach of the Panthers through the 2015 season.

Before joining the Panthers, Price spent 11 years as the head coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. After resigning from Liberty in 2008, Price spent a season as the technical director for the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville Albemarle.

“I am pleased with the foundation that James has laid for the UNI women’s soccer program in his first two years,” Dannen said. “His leadership is enabling our program to position itself for competitive success, and he has proven to be an outstanding leader for the young women in our program.”

During his tenure with the Flames, Price led the team to three Big South Conference Tournament titles, and two Big South Conference regular-season crowns, in addition to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Price guided 39 all-conference athletes, with 20 of them earning first team all-conference nods. Two players were named Big South Players of the Year, along with three Big South Tournament MVP awards. Price was named Big South Coach of the Year in 1999, with the Flames finishing runner-up at the Big South Tournament.

“I would like to thank Troy for this wonderful opportunity,” Price said. “I was impressed with the athletic administration’s commitment to the women’s soccer team, and by the honesty and eagerness of the returning players. There is already a solid foundation, and I look forward to working hard with the players and staff to build a soccer program that UNI can be proud of. I also plan to reach out to the Cedar Valley soccer community, and form strong relationships throughout the area.”

Price was a member of the NCAA Women’s Soccer National Committee from 2002-2005. In addition, Price served as the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Committee Chair from 2003-2005.

Along with guiding his athletes to success on the field, Price also placed a strong emphasis on academics. Three of his athletes were named Big South Scholar Athlete of the year, along with two Academic All-America selections and two Academic All- Region and Academic All-District selections. The Flames women’s soccer team had the highest GPA at Liberty, with a spring 2008 GPA of 3.26.

Prior to his time at Liberty, Price served as an assistant coach at Randolph Macon Women’s College from 1996-1997 and also as the director of coaching for the Lynchburg United Soccer Travel Club.

Price played collegiate soccer for the Flames from 1993-1996 and later played with the USISL pro league team Roanoke Wrath from 1996-2000. In his native country of England, Price played at the semi-pro level with the Chessington United from 1991-1993.

Price earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Liberty in 1996. Price also holds an associate degree in exercise science from Farnborough College of Technology in England.

Price married his fiancee Cassi during the off-season.

Prior to this appointment he served as the 15th president of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. President Ruud, Bill, as he prefers, has served in various leadership capacities at colleges and universities in the U.S. He has used his wealth of experience to lead universities to academic excellence and achievement, as well as ensure that

they fulfill their essential role in the region and state.Ruud began his academic career teaching business courses at Northwestern

Louisiana State University in 1978. From 1979-1981 he conducted his research in leadership assessment at the U.S. Army Research Institute; he also taught management theory and organizational behavior courses at Central Michigan University from 1980-1981.

From 1981 to 1993 he served at the University of Toledo. He taught business and ethics courses and was tenured in 1987. He coordinated the MBA program, served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, and eventually served as Interim Dean of the College of Business Administration. Troy DannenUNI Director of Athletics

University of Northern Iowa Director of Athletics Troy Dannen is entering his seventh year at his alma mater.

Dannen was honored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) as one of 28 winners of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award (ADOY) in 2014.

In Dannen’s six years at UNI, the Panthers have enjoyed an incredible run of success at both the conference and national levels. The success comes not only in the form of wins on each athletic platform, but success in academics, fund-raising, business operations and

marketing. The department’s cumulative grade point average has increased from 2.90 to 3.16

since 2008 and has exceeded the student body’s average at UNI in each of the last nine semesters. UNI’s intercollegiate athletics graduation rate is 74 percent – exceeding the student body’s average of 65 percent. UNI’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) has increased from 961 to 981 since 2008.

The UNI men’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s cross country, women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams were recognized by the NCAA for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores – the most for a single school in the Missouri Valley Conference for the second consecutive year in 2014.

“We are proud of the commitment to academic success shown by our student-athletes, coaches and staff on a daily basis,” UNI Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. “The NCAA’s recognition of these six teams’ achievement in the classroom validates that commitment, and earns Panther athletics an admirable place relative to our peers. Panther athletics will continue to emphasize academic, athletic and social performance as the foundation of excellence among our 400 student-athletes.”

UNI successfully generated gift commitments totaling $27 million in the recently completed “Imagine the Impact” institutional fund-raising campaign – which exceeded the institutional target of $15 million by 80 percent. UNI has also seen its commitments to athletic scholarship endowments increase by 300 percent since 2008. More than $4 million was donated in FY2012, up from $2.5 million in FY2008.

Dannen oversaw the successful completion of Cycle 3 NCAA Certification in 2012. UNI’s generated revenues totaled 51 percent of the department’s budget in FY 2011 – marking the first time the department had generated more than half of its budget. In the current fiscal year numbers, UNI’s generated revenues is projected to top 56 percent.

He has negotiated multi-year marketing deals with Learfield Sports (multi-media rights), Learfield-IMG Ticket Solutions (tickets) and Nike (apparel and equipment). He has also significantly increased the non-athletic events in the UNI-Dome and McLeod Center, which has allowed the facility budget to show a 20 percent operation surplus in each of the past three years. In each of the past two years, UNI ranked in the top-10 in volleyball attendance with an MVC-record setting season in 2013 (3,267 avg./home game).

Dannen’s footprint on UNI athletics can also be seen in facility development with $8 million in facility upgrades that includes strength and conditioning center, administrative offices, academic advising area, suites in the McLeod Center/UNI-Dome, secured the lead gift toward renovation of the West Gym for a wrestling practice facility and wrestling locker room/team room, ticket office and elevator to the McLeod Center and a point of sale system for the UNI athletics facilities.

As a result of these areas of success, UNI athletics have thrived on the competition

field. UNI has recognized 39 All-Americans, 13 Coaches of the Year and nine MVC Players of the Year. Football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and softball have combined to reach 13 NCAA Tournament berth since 2008. Under head coach Doug Schwab, who Dannen hired in 2010, the Panther wrestling program has risen to national status again with the only perfect NCAA Division I record (13-0) in 2013-14.

In the last six seasons, UNI’s competitive success is unmatched at the FCS level. The Panthers have a combined 12 NCAA appearances in football, volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball in that time frame.

UNI has also seen unprecedented individual accolades during Dannen’s tenure. Josh Mahoney was the recipient of the 2010 Walter Byers Award. The award is open to all athletes in all sports in all divisions of play with one female and one male student-athlete being annually presented with the scholarship in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in postgraduate study. The Byers Scholarship award is one of the highest honors the NCAA bestows on a student-athlete.

Jacqui Kalin became UNI’s first women’s basketball player named to the CoSIDA First-Team All-America squad in 2013. Kalin was awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2013. He became the school’s fifth director of athletics since UNI turned Division I. When he rejoined the Panther family in 2009, it was a homecoming for Dannen, who attended UNI as an undergraduate in the 1980s. He maintained close ties to the school during his nearly 20 years away from the University, and his passion and drive for the Purple and Gold was a key reason he chose to come back and guide the department.

For the six years prior to coming back to UNI, Dannen served as Executive Director of the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU). As the governing body for high school sports in the state of Iowa, the IGHSAU oversees nearly 400 schools and more than 70,000 students, in the 11 sports offered by the Union. Dannen had served in various capacities at the IGHSAU over 18 years, including nine years (1993-2002) as associate executive director.

Dannen remains active in the community. He is currently a member of the Iowa Games Board of Directors, and the Cedar Falls Tourism and Visitors Bureau. He has also served on the Greater Des Moines Sports Commission and the AAU Junior Olympics Local Organizing Committee, the Iowa Athletic Council, Iowa Referee Committee and the Drake Relays Committee. Dannen has also been active internationally, having twice been a presenter in Malaysia - at the request of the Olympic Council of Malaysia - on the topic of youth sports and sport program development. He was named to the “40 under 40” business leaders in Des Moines in 2003 and was named 4th among the most powerful Iowans in sports by the Des Moines Register in 2005.

Dannen has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee. His four-year term will begin Sept. 1, 2013 and continue through Sept. 1, 2017. During the NCAA FCS season, the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee is charged with evaluating programs, participating in numerous regional and national conference calls, assisting other committee members with the selection of teams to the playoffs and the creation of the annual NCAA FCS Playoff bracket. Dannen served on the NCAA FCS Regional Advisory Committee in 2011 and 2012.

Born and raised on a farm near Marshalltown, Iowa, Dannen, 46, received his bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in journalism from UNI in 1989.

He is married to his wife, Amy, who works for Boston Scientific Corporation, and has three daughters, Elle, Emily and Holly and a son, William.

Jean BergerSenior Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator

Berger serves as a member of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee. Her term began in 2012.

At UNI, Berger is the direct supervisor of four UNI women’s sports - basketball, softball, tennis and volleyball. She also oversees academic services, NCAA Compliance, and athletic

training. She is responsible for implementing and monitoring gender equity plans and assisting with marketing and budgeting of assigned programs.

Before coming to UNI, Berger worked for more than 17 years at Drake. Berger began working with the Bulldogs in 1991 as an assistant sports information director. In 1994 she took over as the senior woman administrator and assistant athletic director for internal affairs, and in 2005 she was

promoted to associate athletic director.Berger’s responsibilities at Drake included supervision of 11 athletic programs and overseeing

the department’s student services, including compliance, academic support, sports medicine and strength and conditioning. She also worked as a sponsor for the Drake Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She serves as the Missouri Valley Conference representative to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee, and she previously served a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee.

Berger also worked closely with Drake’s Title IX Review and gender equity plan, the 1995 NCAA Midwest Women’s Basketball Regional, two cycles of Drake’s NCAA Certification self-study and the Drake Relays.

Before working at Drake, Berger spent one year as an assistant sports information director at Wichita State. From 1985-1990, Berger worked as the sports information director at Wayne State College.

Berger attended the University of Iowa, and she earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism and her master’s degree in physical education and sports studies. She is a native of Winterset, Iowa, and has two daughters, Jessica (26) and Jenna (19).
