Operating Model

Operating Model

The operating model simply means - ‘how does the company go about making its films? ’

Funding Independent Film ProductionA number of small independent production companies in the UK, have a wide range of different

strategies how to get the money they need to make their films. Here are few of those strategies: Initial Capitalisation – companies gets certain amount of money as a fund to use in their

production. A funding might come from initial investors, bank loans, personal finance and credit cards from film makers. They could also get initial funding from a film finding body. E.g. Screen West Midlands, Lottery etc.

Project Capitalisation – meaning companies might infuse finance from the same sources as above, for a particular project. *They may be subsidiarys – when another country invests for your films or *Profits – companies will invest money of profit they already have into future productions.

Co-funding and partnership – small production companies will make a deals, with another similar, small companies in the UK. E.g. In the particular film, the only drink they will be using – coca-cola, and in this case Coca-cola’s company will invest their money into that film.

Distribution fees – distribution company might fund the project if the product will be sold to them before it’s been made, then distributor is guaranteed a final product. Pay in advance for the distribution rights.

Licensing – company may do a deal with a big production company – in return for a fee from the big company, the small company will give the big company first refusal to develop or distribute their projects.

The ratings shows that the Celador company’s movie was more popular than the Hammer’s.And if we would look at the production budget,The ‘Let Me In’ movie’s budget was $20mln.And the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ movie’s $15mln.Still, the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was more popular tham ‘Let Me In’.

However this does not mean that the ‘The Hammer’ is better film production company than ‘Celador’. Celador has never produced many films, but this company is quit successful in other media areas. The Hammer, has produced many movies and also other media products.
