Black Team 2008

Unit:Human Body

1) Cells --> Tissues -> Organs--> Organ Systems --> Organism

2) A group of similar cells working together.

3) Two or more tissues working together.

4) Organs working together. (We have 11 organ systems.)5) The body’s tendency to keep an

internal balance.

Name:Date:Group:

1) How is the human body organized?

2) What are Tissues?

3) What are Organs?

4) What is an Organ System?

5) What is homeostasis?

Unit:Human Body

1) A) provides shape and support B) allows movement C) protects tissues and organs (ribs protect lungs/ cranium protects brain) D) stores certain minerals E) produces blood cells (flat bones)2) A stiff jellylike connective tissue

which cushions bones and provides a slippery surface.

(tip of your nose)3) Ligaments connect bone to bone.

4) Tendons connect muscles to bone.

Name:Date:Group:

1) What are the 5 jobs of the skeletal system?

2) What is cartilage?

3) What are ligaments?

4) What are tendons?

1) What are the different moving joints in the human skeleton?

-ball and socket (shoulder/femur-hip)-hinge (wrist/ankle)-gliding (wrist)

2) Some joints are stationary or non-moving. (skull)

1) What are the three types of muscle?

1) Skeletal Muscle- muscle that attaches to and moves bone. (It appears striated or banded)

2) Smooth Muscle- an involuntary muscle that can contracts without you telling it to. It is smooth in appearance and not striated. They help control breathing and the digestive system.

3) Cardiac Muscle- only found in the heart. They form a compact mesh of fibers.

4) Skeletal muscles work in pairs. They PULL on bones. (quadriceps/hamstring)

5) Voluntary/involuntary?

Name:Date:Group:

1) What is the job of the digestive system?

2) Why do we need food?

3) What is mechanical digestion?

4) What is chemical digestion?

5) What is peristalsis?

6) What is an enzyme?

1) To break down food for absorption to the blood.

2) To provide energy for our cells, tissues etc.

3) Mechanical digestion is the break down of food into smaller pieces

4) Large molecules are broken into nutrients.

5) Wave-like contractions caused by smooth muscle in the digestive system.

6) Enzymes break nutrients into smaller molecules.(e.g Amylase- starch to sugar)

Page 7: Unit Four Cornell Notesc

Unit:Human Body

Name:Date:Group:

1) Food chewed, softened and moistened. Saliva begins to break down starch.

2) Moves food to stomach using peristalsis.

3) Churns and mixes food and begins to digest protein.

4) Foods are completely digested and nutrients are absorbed. Villi absorb nutrients into tiny blood vessels.

5) Pancreatic juice digests fats, starch, and proteins.

6) Bile breaks fats into small droplets

7) Absorbing water and storing wastes

1) Mouth

2) Esophagus

3) Stomach

4) Small Intestine

5) Pancreas

6) Liver

7) Large Intestine

Unit:Human Body

Name:Date:Group:

1) What is respiration?

2) What is the respiratory system?

3) What does the nose do?

4) What is the epiglottis?

5) What are the alveoli?

1) Respiration is the process that releases energy from food, using oxygen.

<C6H12O6 + O2 --> Energy + CO2 + H2O>

2) The system that gets oxygen for, and removes carbon dioxide and water from, the body.

3) The nose (nasal passages) warm the air (blood vessels) and moisten it (mucus).

4) This flap covers the trachea (windpipe) when swallowing.

5) These are the tiny air sacs where blood drops off CO2 and picks up O2. (Respiratory/Circulatory)

Page 9: Unit Four Cornell Notesc

Unit:Human Body

Name:Date:Group:

1) What is the main function of the circulatory system?

2) What are the Atria and Ventricles?

3) What is an artery?

4) What is a vein?

5) What are capillaries?

1)1) To transport materialsTo transport materials, like food and oxygen, and remove waste.

2) The atria are the two upper heart chambers and the ventricles are the two (larger) lower chambers.

3) A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.

4) A blood vessel that carries blood towards the heart.

5) Very thin walled blood vessels that allow food and oxygen to leave and CO2 and wastes to enter. (one cell at a time!

Name:Date:Group:

1) What is blood?

2) What are red blood cells (rbc’s)?

1) Blood is made of plasma (liquid) and three floating particles: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.*Blood s 55% plasma/ 45% cells

2)
