Have You Seen Us Around Town? The University's Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Behavior Evening Degree Program has hit the streets ... literally! Beginning in November 2010, Pacific's very own Ron Tacan was the "street billboard guy" that prospective students around San Joaquin County referenced when

calling into CPCE to inquire about the Organizational Behavior Program. This past year, University Public Safety Officer Chan Saechao and fellow Pacific employee Robyn Cheshire, along with Bobbie Rodriguez, and Lynn Finch

graced the street billboards. The current billboard campaign features Andy Pinasco and Thomas Dietrich.

The street billboards were a huge success as over 150 prospective students contacted CPCE regarding the Organizational Behavior Evening Degree Program. Program

enrollment doubled in size as well! Nearly all of the students that started the program in fall 2011 and

2012 made mention of wanting to "finish what they started" and noted that seeing the street billboards was the incentive they needed to contact the University. Also, the reduction in the tuition cost was a tremendous hit too!

The Organizational Behavior Evening Degree Program is designed to meet the work schedules of adult learners wanting to earn their Bachelor of Science degree. A new cohort begins every fall focusing on those talents and skills that leaders need in order to succeed and thrive in today's knowledge economy. Classes run from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and are held at the University's CPCE office,1776 W. March Lane, Suite 290, Stockton, CA. Contact Dave Hamlett at 209.946.2424 or [email protected] for additional information.

Chan Saechao is Finishing What He Started!Chan Saechao is a Public Safety Officer for the University of the Pacific and a student in the Organizational Behavior Evening Degree Program graduating in May 2013.

CPCE: What attracted you to the Organizational Behavior Evening Degree program (ORGB)?Chan: I was attracted to how many units I was able to accumulate in such a short time. As a full-time employee, I thought it would take me at least 4-5 years just to finish my degree by taking a few classes each semester. I am very fortunate to be in the ORGB evening degree program. It's only a 20-month program, and I am excited to graduate in May 2013.

CPCE: What was your biggest challenge or surprise? Chan: Like every evening program student here at Pacific, my biggest challenge is time management. It was very difficult in the beginning to juggle between my full-time job, family life, and being a full-time student all at the same time. It took some time to adjust, but I think I have a good handle on it now. The program understands the students' needs and only schedule classes for two nights out of the week, which I found to fit well with my already busy schedule.

CPCE: What did you like about the program?Chan: I love the fact that I have the ability to rack up college units in the same rate as traditional students in any college institution.

CPCE: What course and/or instructor interested you the most and why?Chan: I cannot tell you one instructor is better or more influential than another because they are all great. I am greatly influenced by each and every one of them in different special ways. The ORGB instructors are there to teach and most importantly they want you to succeed.

CPCE: Was your family and job (your supervisor) supportive in this process? If so, how?Chan: I am very fortunate to have everyone in my life. My wife is the greatest supporter/ influence in making my dreams a success. She pushed me when I felt like giving up and praised me when I earned my A's. My supervisor at work, Sgt. Bernardino, worked with me every way that he could to make my education as smooth as possible. He gave me time off when I needed to do school work and authorized time off early from work when I had classes.

CPCE: How has the ORGB program/degree helped you in your current job?Chan: I learned to become a better person and a leader in my

organization. I learned not to be a selfish person, but a selfless leader.

I've also learned that in order to become a leader one must put others

first and look in the best interest of the organization before ones' self.

CPCE: What is your career/professional goal and how has the ORGB program

assisted you in this process? Chan: Since my education I have become a

selfless leader and individual. I have learned to do things to improve my organization

without thinking about how it will benefit me, but the organization in itself. Prior to being in the program, I've never thought about

interviewing for a higher position this early in my career. I work as a police officer, and these few months of being in the program, it has given me the confidence to interview for a sergeant position. Unfortunately, I did not get the position but it's a great start to future success.

CPCE: What has been the reaction to you being on the billboard? Chan: In the line of work that I do I get many jokes thrown at me from "Mr. Hollywood” to “GQ" but I know it's all out of love. The best reaction was from a person whom I was going to arrest early last year. As I was attempting to put handcuffs on this individual, he turned to me and asked if I was the cop on the billboard, and when I said, "yes", he replied that at least he is being arrested by a "famous cop". That made my day. The person was more concerned about who I was rather than him going to jail.

CPCE: What advice would you pass along to those individuals who are interested in participating in the ORGB program? Chan: Nothing can and should hold you back from achieving your goals. You are the ultimate captain of your ship. Don't let your fears or anyone hold you back. My thing is everything happens for a reason. If you haven't finished what you started, then you are meant to finish here at Pacific's ORGB program because the program applies to every field you want, and it teaches you to be a great leader.More information on the Organizational Behavior program:go.pacific.edu/Degree-Completion

Dementia Care Course OfferedDementia Care Education Necessary for Many As the Baby Boomer generation is getting older many are finding a need for more information on the topic of dementia care for

their loved ones. "Dementia care as a topic has grown in popularity due to the number of people affected with Dementia growing. This is the only big top ten disease with no known effective prevention or treatment. Also,

it is popular because it is more feared than dying," notes Pamela Atwood, instructor of Dementia Care.

Alzheimers has grown 66% over the last decade, while Atkins disease, stroke, and cancer have declined, making this the most popular topic in healthcare currently.

This online course is relevant for anyone who works with dementia patients, employees of senior centers, adult daycare centers, home care, as well as for people who design for those populations, policy makers, and family caregivers.

This new class dives into cutting-edge topics including: dealing with the disease, foundations, basic neurology of thinking and cognition, practical strategies of communication (management), end of life issues (legal and financial), and new best practices and approaches.

Contract and Customized Learning The need for customized learning is on the rise! The economy is on the mend but businesses still want to make sure they are making smart investments with their training budgets. CPCE

OLLI@Pacific OLLI@Pacific takes the university’s goal of fostering a happier, healthier, and more productive life to its lifelong learners seriously. Lifelong learning can strengthen that mind, body, spirit connection and is the key to getting the most out of life at any age. This connection becomes even more significant as we approach and enter into retirement, so our program reaches “beyond the gates” to engage this population.

Designed for people age 50 or better, OLLI@Pacific offers a learning environment that challenges minds, expands spirits, and engages emotions. Without the burden of required attendance, reading or tests, learning becomes life enhancing. Last semester 431 OLLI@Pacific members enjoyed a wide range of courses and lectures given by University faculty, community experts, and professionals. You may have seen them on campus walking to classrooms and lecture halls. Many have spent more years at Pacific than they did decades ago at their alma mater.

This academic year faculty includes Dr. Jeffrey Michael, Dr. Robert Halliwell, Dr. Ken Albala, Dr. Raj Patel, Dr. Paul

Bulakowski, Dr. Bob Benedetti, Associate Professor Cathy Peterson, Dr. Rahim Khoie, Associate Professor Cathie McClellan, Dr. Amy Smith, Associate Professor Keith Hatschek, and retired Dr. Gene Bigler. OLLI members participated in Dr. Diane Borden’s film series, Dean Brigid Welch’s book discussions, sang with Magen Solomon, and sleuthed through the Library Archives with Michael Wurtz.

They continue to fill Deanna Hunt's art courses, practice Tai Chi with Dr. Ray Tom, write their memoirs under the tutelage of Dr. Dianne Runion, and learn the ins and outs of working with computers from David Diskin. They

are becoming well-acquainted with birds while on field trips with expert David Yee and are planning a science EdVenture to the San Jose Tech Museum this spring. The classes and activities are filled with older adults living life to the fullest and seeking to learn simply for the joy of it.

The lecturers generally deliver a 90-minute talk repeated at three locations; those who choose to teach a course hold anywhere from two to ten sessions. Should you have a topic you wish to share either in your academic field of expertise, hobby or passion, please contact OLLI@Pacific to discuss the possibility of being part of the University's lifelong learning program.

One of my goals for the year was to represent CPCE and the University of a Pacific by presenting at a national conference. I was lucky enough to get this opportunity in November when I joined around 170 continuing education professionals in New Orleans, LA for the UPCEA Seminar on the Management of Online Programs. This was a 3 day event focused on the rapidly growing field of online education. The rise of massive open online courses (MOOCs), increasing economic impacts

facing higher education institutions, and competition among the colleges and universities were hot topics during the dozens of presentation sessions. I teamed up with Amanda Mulfinger, a colleague from Penn State University, to present a session entitled Top Ten List of Effectively Managing Online Programs Including Best Practices for Transitioning Face to Face Programs to Online. Amanda focused her portion of the presentation on a compiled list through personal experiences and research that addressed the top ten areas to focus on when managing an online program and presented in a David Letterman-style top-ten list. I focused on how our own Center for Professional and Continuing Education transitioned its in-seat Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate Program into an online success. Our presentation was well received and gave us an excellent opportunity to highlight our programs with other industry professionals. I look forward to having another opportunity to present at a national conference and look forward to doing so in the near future.

While attending conference sessions occupied a lot of my time in New Orleans, I was also able to get out and see some of the sights. I managed to score a ticket to the Monday Night Football game while I was there and got to see Drew Brees and the Saints beat Michael Vick and the Eagles. I also walked along Bourbon Street and visited Café Du Monde for some Beignets. It was a truly delightful experience and I’m looking forward to another trip to New Orleans.

Orleans, LA. Kyle has been a Coordinator for Program Development and Management for CPCE since January 2010.
