    FIRST SERVE

Quiet But Strong: Of Wyoming’s senior class, Lily Austin is the only one in her fourth season in Laramie. Austin has not only played in 118 of the 120 matches during her career, but is closing in on the all-time top-ten lists in sets played, service aces and digs. Austin currently has played in 409 sets for the Cowgirls. She also has 90 career service aces and 881 digs.

MW RPI: The first official NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball RPI was released Monday, October 2. As of Oct. 16, the latest ranking’s for MW teams are:35. Colorado State80. Boise State85. Wyoming127. San José State157. New Mexico160. Utah State176. San Diego State189. UNLV196. Air Force211. Fresno State220. Nevada

Not Spooked in October: The month of October brings Halloween and spooky, scary skeletons to send shivers down your spine! Since the beginning of October 2016, the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team has a record of 10-3 during the month of October. UW went 6-3 in the month last season and currently sport a perfect 4-0 mark through this month.

Double-Trouble: Harmon has lead UW in assists during the last nine matches and 17 overall this season. Additionally, she leads the squad with four double-doubles. Sophomore Halie McArdle, who has two, is the only other Cowgirl to record at least one double-double this season.

Top-Ten: Junior Reed Copeland was the 2015 MW Freshman of the Year and continued to lead UW defensively a year ago. She recorded her tenth block of the season against Portland during the first weekend of 2017 to move into tenth place all-time. This past weekend Copeland moved into sixth-place all-time. Now with 427 career blocks, Copeland is 11 from moving into fifth place all-time while with the Brown and Gold.

NCAA Career Active Leaders: Copeland’s stellar defensive career is in line with the best of the NCAA. She is currently ranked 15th in total blocks among active NCAA volleyball student-athletes. Copeland is also the only player from the MW within the top-15. North Dakota’s Faith Dooley leads all active players with 597 career blocks.

Within the NCAA: A number of Cowgirls can find themselves not only within the top-ten in the MW, but are nationally ranked in the NCAA as well. After three weeks of league action, Copeland and redshirt fresh-man Jackie McBride are making a name for themselves defensively. Copeland is 32nd in the NCAA with 1.39 blocks per set. McBride follows at 88th (1.16 bps).

MW Player of the Week: Freshman setter Marissa Harmon was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced last Monday morning. The award was the first weekly honor for Harmon and also the first for Wyoming this season. A year ago, both Courtney Chacon (Oct. 3) and Kayla Slofkiss (Nov. 7) each earned the honor once for the Cowgirls.

Wyoming Fun Fact -Big Horn, Cheyenne, Lincoln, Sweet-water, and Yellowstone were some of the suggested names for the Wyoming territory when the U.S. Senate named the territory in 1868.
