ABOUT
Auckland is a big place. It can be pretty daunting as a high school student embarking upon New Zealand’s largest city.
But never fear, the UN+TRAVELLED guide is here!
This guide is aimed to provide information and tips to help make your experience in Auckland the best it can be. We hope you will find this guide useful.
Remember, this serves only as a guide, and we’ve done our best to make sure the information is as accurate as possible. Make sure you do your own research too! More information on the conference itself will be released in our Participants Handbook, to be released in coming weeks. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, all the best in your travel and accommodation endeavours. We can’t wait to see you at Youth Declaration 2013!

TOP TIP The conference starts at approximately 8am on Wednesday 24 April, and ends around 6pm on Saturday 27 April. Make sure you allow plenty of time to get to and from the airport. If that means staying an extra night or two, then the awesomeness of the conference will make it all worth it.
DURING THE CONFERENCE
An affordable option to get to and from the airport. An adult return ticket costs $28. Buses run frequently – refer to the timetable and route map on http://www.airbus.co.nz/.
Have you thought about how you’re going to get to and from the conference for each day? Here are some of your options:
Walking: Youth Declaration will be taking place at the main campus of the University of Auckland, in the heart of Auckland CBD. This is in close proximity to most major hostels and backpackers. We’ll have conference assistants walking participants back to their accommodation at the end of every day of the conference.
Public Transport: If you’re living with relatives or friends a fair way out of town, public transport might be the way to go. Find your bus/train at http://www.maxx.co.nz/.
Carpooling: The cheap and eco-friendly option!
Taxi: A safe and reliable option. Give a committee member or welfare officer a shout if you need to book a taxi home.
Can be pretty cheap if you’re going in a group. Make a booking at https://www.supershuttle.co.nz/.

ACCOMMODATIONHostels are a cost-effective accommodation option for out-of-towners. Most hostels allow for group bookings of up to 6 people per room, which is also the cheapest room available. Since a lot of you may not know many of the other participants going to Youth Declaration, and may not want to live alone, we’ve created a Facebook group for those from out of town to meet others seeking to make group bookings for hostel accommodation. Check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/496069550452844/?fref=ts

If you have friends or relatives in Auckland, see if you can stay with them during the conference. However, do make sure they live relatively close to Auckland CBD, or it may take a wee while to get to and from the conference each day!
There are a limited number of Auckland-based participants who have kindly offered to have some from out of Auckland stay with them for the duration of Youth Declaration. If you’ve indicated you would like to be billeted, we’ll be in touch with you shortly to see whether we have found a place for you.

Welfare is not just about your medical needs and physical wellbeing. UN Youth recognises the concept of hauora in defining what wellbeing means to us. We believe welfare is not simply limited to an absence of physical illness but encompasses the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of health. Ensuring the wellbeing and hauora of all persons involved in UN Youth activities is very important to UN Youth. Accordingly, UN Youth has actively implemented specific welfare practices at Youth Declaration to ensure the wellbeing of all participants.
UN Youth will ensure that at Youth Declaration 2013:

Information about participants’ medical and dietary needs collected at the time of registration are collated and passed on to Welfare Officers, who individually tailor their Welfare services to participant needs. This information-sharing is governed by a principle of confidentiality.
A comprehensive First Aid Kit is available at all times during Youth Declaration. Medications limited to Paracetamol and Ibuprofen may be supplied to participants by UN Youth, if needed.
All Conference Assistants are formally trained in facilitation and working with young people; our UN Youth volunteers will actively promote the welfare of participants at all times.
