Trailblazers Presidents Message

Hello everyone. Welcome to our March issue of the TRAILBLAZER.

Many thanks to Hal Anker for his fabulous work on the TRAIL-

BLAZER and its supplements. AND . . . a special thank you needs to go

to Dolva Mitchell who is doing a GREAT JOB shooting pictures at our

Saturday dances and sharing with Hal the very time-consuming and

creative layout work for the TRAILBLAZER snapshot editions. Thanks

to you both!

As you know, at Trailblazers Board direction, we instituted

computer squares at both dances (C1 and A2) on Saturdays. Last year

we tested them at A2 and found them to be highly successful. We have

had a marked increase in A2 dancers and I expect to see increases in the

C1 folks as well. We’ll see! I have to confess; I was not a proponent of

the computer squares last year. I had not witnessed anything wrong with

the squaring-up process at either of our Saturday dances. However, I’m

very glad to say I was wrong and using the computer has been successful. I shout out to the board

members that out-voted me to do it . . . they were right. I have heard comments about moving computer

squares to C2 and C3A. The answer is no; we won’t be doing that, and there has been no Board

conversation about it.

It’s coming to the end of Pat and my adventure as club Presidents, and we have had a great time. I

wanted to make sure that we could run the club with as little Board interaction as possible. I half-jokingly

said that I would only entertain 30-minute board meetings with as few of them as possible. So far, so good.

We’ll have our first 2018 Board meeting on Sunday, April 8, 2018 between the C2 and C3A sessions. I

know that Hal Anker, Jerry Blackmar and Mickey Klinger are working as the nominating team to get a

slate of potential officers on which to vote next month. I would encourage you to think about helping the

club by being on the board next year; it’s a rewarding and pretty pleasant experience. Send an email to

[email protected] to get information from the Nominations and Election Committee.

This month we will enjoy the unique stylings of Anne Uebelacker from Auburn, Washington. Anne

has called for Trailblazers for many years, and we are always glad to see her. Like all of our national and

international callers, Anne brings a fresh and challenging approach to square dance calling. Anne calls

from mainstream through C3B and, since the inception of the Academy for Advanced & Challenge

Enthusiasts (AACE) convention in 2001, Anne has been a staff caller at 13 of the 17 conventions.

I thought you would be interested in knowing that Trailblazers has 137 dues-paying members,

5 Honorary Members, and 12 Esteemed Members. Esteemed Members are those couples or individuals

who have worked for Trailblazers for many years and have received permanent recognition. Look for the

gold badges at our dances.

As always, thank you to everyone for supporting Trailblazers. We know that many of you travel great

distances and/or spend a lot of travel time to get to our dances; it is much-appreciated. Also, thank you for

continuing friendly dancing and embracing the “joy” in our shared activity.

But . . . Wait . . . WAIT . . . There's more . . .

Here’s a freebie for you: Encourage your A2 and C1 dancing friends who are ready for Trailblazers

level and caller-diversity a try. As a way to thank you for bringing new dancers to a Trailblazers dance,

we’ll comp your entrance to the dance for bringing A2 or C1 folks who have not been to Trailblazers

before. Bringing more A2 dancers to our dances is good for them, Trailblazers, and (hopefully) the

dancing community. We know there are dancers out there just waiting for an invitation.

Pat and I sincerely hope you have a great Trailblazer weekend.

We look forward to dancing with you, Tom & Pat Roberts

Edie Walker - Pat on the Back [Edie is a long-time square dance enthusiast, with a “sure fire make-you-smile” laugh. Let’s learn her story…]

I started square dancing in 1964 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I can’t remember the name of the club, but I do remember that between tips we sold beer to support our club activities. (After all, this was Wisconsin, where kids are allowed in taverns, and a tavern is considered a family hangout) In 1964, I was attending night class to get my high school diploma when one of the friends I made told me she and her husband were going to go to a beginners’

class and asked if I would go with them. The obvious answer was YES, and 54 years later I’m still dancing. (I did have a seven-year time-out, but came back). Because my husband was an office manager for a construction company, we moved all over the U.S. We danced everywhere we lived, but I can hardly remember those places we lived, much less the clubs’ names . . . Let’s just say there were lots. Later, we settled in southern California. I learned Advanced from Mike Kellogg, Johnny Preston, and George Monaghan. C1 instruction was from Vic Kaaria, and I can’t remember who else. I have danced C1 with Romney Tannehill for years. My C2 instructors are Michael Bandoian and Jane Clewe. I regularly dance with Romney’s Stars on Tuesdays, and support Trailblazers, PACE, Phantom Squares, and when possible Magic Squares in San Diego. I love attending PACE Extravaganza, but haven’t gone in a few years. You see, I get a week off for Thanksgiving break, and I would rather find somewhere to go scuba diving. I’ve attended Romney’s weekends and had a great time at them. Scuba diving is my passion and I go whenever I get a chance to drag Connie along with me (Thank you Roger). In

Edie Walker (continued from page 5) order to do this, I have to continue to work. I teach math, science and marine science to sixth graders at South Gate Middle School. I’ve taught for only 18 years so I still love it, and I think I’ve gotten good at it. I will continue teaching until I stop having fun or quit diving, whichever comes first. When they were little, all of my children square danced and performed on a dance team; they were as cute as they could be in their little gingham skirts and shirts. Of course, we all know my daughter, Connie Thousand, still square dances. She and her husband, Roger, dance at the C4 level. Right now, I am attempting to get proficient at the C2 level, and it is my favorite level so far. Not only is it very challenging, but now Connie and Roger will come and dance with me. The first time I attended a C1 dance was at PACE before they changed the format and dropped C1 sessions. Connie and Roger took me to celebrate my graduation from California State University, Dominguez Hills with my Masters in Education. Connie set up squares for me with all of the high-level dancers so I could be successful. The thing everyone kept telling me was, “Breathe, Edie, breathe.” It was a great day. `Square Dancing has allowed me to become involved in a social activity regardless of where I lived. It is an instant activity to meet people and make new friends. It continues to fulfill that mission today. I feel sad that we are not getting more new people in our beginner’s classes. If we lose square dancing, we will be losing an American icon and there will be nothing that can replace it. [What a joy to dance and laugh with Edie…and I might add, be one of her “Dive Buddies”]

[A BIG Pat on the Back to Edie for contributing this article . . . Pat]
