CHAPEL MISSION PROJECT – Back2School Event Support (April - June) Our chapel mission project for April through the end of the school year will go to support our Back2School Event in August here at Immanuel. Through the Back2School Event we are giving away schools supplies to over 500 students in our community who struggle to provide school supplies for their kids. To help with that mission, we have a goal for our students to donate 500 boxes of 24-count Crayola crayons that will go along with other school supplies to be distributed that day. Offerings can also be brought each Wednesday to help purchase more school supplies. Students can bring in the 24-count Crayola crayon boxes anytime to their classroom teacher. Each Wednesday, we’ll bring our offerings and crayons to chapel. Current Crayon Box Total - 11

“Crayon Day” – Friday, May 8th Students may choose a crayon color and wear clothing, shoes, socks, tights, hats, bows, etc. to match their color. No dying of hair. Teachers will do some activities in the classroom that involve crayons that day also.

TOWN HALL MEETINGS – Building Proposal Immanuel is hosting three town hall events in order to gain insight and feedback about our upcoming building campaign. Please plan on attending one of these events in order to be informed about what our building committee and architect has planned for our facility. The town halls will last about one hour in length and child care will be available. Town Hall dates (in the Worship Center):

• May 13th 7:00 pm • May 14th 7:00 pm • May 17th 12:00 noon (following 10:45 service)

TEACHER HIGHLIGHT Tanya DeVoy – 3rd Grade Teacher Why do you like teaching your grade level? I love teaching third grade. I have taught grades 1-4, but keep coming back to third. It is so much fun and I love the kids that I have had in my class. Why do you teach in a Lutheran school? Why Immanuel? I teach in a Lutheran School because I love to teach about Jesus every day. I enjoy sharing my faith with others and helping their faith grow. I decided to teach at Immanuel because I was able to come home. I grew up in this area. I had been teaching in Northville and coming to work at Immanuel was a way to be closer to family and friends. Why did you decide to be a teacher? Who inspired you? I decided to be a teacher because in 9th grade I started coaching basketball. I loved teaching the kids how to play the game and it was also a lot of fun. So I tried to figure out what job I could do where I could have fun while still teaching. I still love to teach and coach. I had many teachers who inspired me because of their faith in God. Most of these teachers are still teaching and spreading the love of God to others. What do you like to do during the school year to relax? I enjoy reading and watching movies. What do you like to do in the summer? I like to travel, read, relax and do nothing! Tell about your education. I attended St. Peter Macomb for grade school. Then I went on to Lutheran High North. I received a BA in elementary education from Concordia College in Ann Arbor. I received my MA in early childhood education from Oakland University. Tell about any other training, workshops, seminars, programs, books, etc. that have helped you grow. Last year I renewed my teaching certificate through some programs at the MISD. I really enjoyed it and learned about teaching reading through the program. Tell about your family. My family is small. It is just my husband and I and our cat, Gizmo. I have a sister who is a veterinarian in New Jersey. My husband and I are excited to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary this summer.

Computer Lab 2015:

Kindergarten: Students have completed their assessments and the kindergartners have been successful with all of their computer skills. They are ready for first grade computer class. For the remainder of the year I will be introducing websites to strengthen their reading, phonics, and math skills.

1st Grade: Students will learn about parts of a story (such as characters, plot, and theme). Students will also learn about animals and how to search for animals. Along with learning new websites to strengthen their phonics, reading, and writing skills.

2nd Grade: This week students will be selecting an animal to do research on. Students will do research, take notes, and complete a pre-designed MS PowerPoint presentation. Students will then present their animal projects by the end of the school year.

3rd Grade: Next week students will start working on their Michigan Projects. Students will pick a topic, place, or person from Michigan and they will gather information (clues) about their topic. They will then prepare a MS PowerPoint and present to the class, their classmates will try to guess what the topic is based on the clues given.

4th Grade: Students will finish up their presentations next week. They all have done an amazing job. After the presentations students will be learning about digital citizenship, being safe online, how to do research, and they will use an online program that reinforces what they learn from the lessons. This program is called digital passport.

5th Grade: Students will share their Biome presentations this week and continue next week. Once the biomes projects have been completed students will learn about digital citizenship. Students will learn how to make strong passwords, how to cite a site, key word searches, and how to determine what is correct on the internet and what is not. 5th grade students will also use the Digital Passport program that has games to reinforce what they learn.

Thank you for reading [email protected].

Computer Lab Newsletter April 20, 2015

6th Grade: Students will be presenting their highly qualified website projects next week. Students will then learn about being a good Upstander after this lesson, we will wrap up the school year with the student learning about plagiarism. I have several games planned to enhance their knowledge of plagiarism and also searching safely on the internet.

7th Grade: Students are finishing up their career projects. This week they were working on the Life style budget, which uses Excel to teach students about how much it costs to live on their own. Starting next week students will be practicing their interview skills. After the career projects, students will finish up the year with a movie about 7th grade in review.

8th Grade: Students did an amazing job on their PSA movies. The next project is a religious project where students compare their Lutheran religion to the various other religions, they will be working in a group and are assigned a religion to compare and contrast. After students finish presenting their religion projects they will be working on a final movie of the year, which will be a review of their time here at Immanuel.

Advanced computer: Students will be presenting their Careers in Technology next week. The next project that will take until the end of the year, students will be designing and creating their own website. They get to select the topic and subject of their website.

News to share: Last week I had the pleasure to welcome Joshua James as Technology Teacher for the day. This was an item that was offered during the auction in February. Josh was able to teach all of my classes, and he did an amazing job. I really enjoyed his company and I think the students enjoyed his instruction. Thank you to the James family for their generous donation to the auction and for sharing Josh with me for the day. Thank you also to the 7th and 8th grade teachers for allowing Joshua to spend the day in the computer lab.
