Ongoing initiatives

• Trends and ramifications of LEED v4

• Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs) and Product Category Rules (PCRs)

• The new subject of product transparency

• Continued growth of Green Squared®

New Concepts in LEED v4

• Product durability/LCA benefits

• Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

• Product transparency/raw material reporting

• Multi-attribute product sustainability

Trends/Focus on How LEED v4 is Impacting Industry Priorities and Green Building as a Whole

• Demand for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and LCAs in general are very high

• Rapid emergence of demands for raw material transparency associated with health impacts • General industry response: some support; some confusion; some

controversy

• Industries today are expected to develop and maintain their own respective sustainability criteria, such as Green Squared®

Recap: What is an EPD?

• Also known as Type 3 environmental labels

• Facts derived from a lifecycle assessment (LCA)

• Standardized reporting of environmental facts, based on Product Category Rules (PCRs) for specific product groupings

North American PCR for “Flooring”

• Carpet, Resilient, Laminate, Ceramic, Wood

• Program Operator: NSF International • Each respective trade association

(including TCNA) participated in PCR development

• Key features • Conformant to ISO 14025 and ISO

21930 • Consistent reporting framework for all

types of flooring materials • Requirement to report environmental

impacts based on 60 year LCA

TCNA Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Project • TCNA and it’s tile manufacturing members working on an EPD for

generic “tile”

• Purpose: to meet rapidly growing demands for the industry to provide technical and in-depth facts on tile’s environmental impacts

• Objective: a generic report of the environmental footprint of North American tile

North American Industry-Wide EPD Initiative

• Program Operator: UL Environment

• LCA Firm: PE INTERNATIONAL

• Based on North American flooring PCR, by NSF International

• 12 participating tile manufacturers in US (includes every major North American tile manufacturer)

North American Industry-Wide EPD Initiative

• Importance of generic tile EPD: • Points in LEED and other green building standards

• Opportunity for manufacturers to compare their products to industry average

• Baseline data and framework for future initiatives

One final thought on EPDs . . .

• North America also paying close attention to of ISO/TC 59/SC 17 (TCNA currently serves as US Delegate)

• Governing body over ISO 21930 Requirements for Building Material EPDs • Major revision to ISO 21930 is in progress

• Discussion to possibly require that PCRs be developed as ISO standards • Currently, PCRs are developed by EPD program operators which results in worldwide

variation, even within common product types

• Such “ISO PCRs” would be developed by product committees, such as ISO/TC 189

• Likely several years away from this requirement, but TCNA will keep WG7 informed of these conversations

What else? . . . Today’s Growing Demand for Product Ingredient Transparency; a.k.a. Health Product Declaration (HPD)

WHAT NEXT?!

Reporting of Product Ingredients and Associated Health Impacts

• Demands are rapidly emerging, most commonly for Health Product Declarations (HPDs) • Points in LEED

• Broad promotion has led to architectural demands

• Potential issues • Misleading: pure chemical reporting instead of mixtures or compounds

• New expectation for manufacturers to release “secret” formulas

• Lack of science and consensus around some “health impact” assumptions

• Growing market for 3rd party certified HPDs; more costs for manufacturers

Page 13: Update on North American Sustainability Initiatives › wp-content › uploads › 2012 › 07 › 6.4... · New Concepts in LEED v4 •Product durability/LCA benefits •Life Cycle

• Many industries oppose this new initiative • Some are appealing LEED v4 • Others are developing alternative reporting frameworks for architects and specifiers

• Some industries support HPDs, especially those who inherently do not have ingredients which are “secret” or “blacklisted”

• Mixed reviews from North American tile manufacturers and tile industry on how to address HPDs • More discussion needed

What are other industries doing to address HPDs?

Green Squared® Update • Increased A&D Familiarity

• Growing number of webinars and

educational sessions

• Several articles in EDC Magazine (USGBC’s official LEED AP publication)

• Emerging presence in green building standards and rating systems

• Overall, has helped strengthen tile industry presence in the green building community
