Easter Sunday does not celebrate the resuscitation of Jesus, but his Resurrection. We know his ‘glorified body’ was not the same as his human body because Jesus’ presence could be encountered in several places simultaneously and he is reported to walk through walls and to vanish. The link between both resurrection traditions is the importance of Jesus’ death. In the empty tomb accounts, as in today’s gospel, the writers give us extraordinary details about the grave clothes. In the apparition narratives there are usually references to Jesus’ wounds.

Whatever way they came to experience the Resurrection of Christ, the disciples knew that this was Jesus who actually died and was buried and that their personal encounter was with the one who was crucified.

What God did through the death and resurrection of Jesus is what Christians have done with local customs and festivals ever since: he entered into it, understood it, took it on board, domesticated it and vanquished its power. As a result we believe that God empathises with the full limitations of our human mortality and promises to remain faithful to us in death as he remained utterly faithful to Jesus.

That is why on this day 1,600 years ago St John Chrysostom could say on behalf of us all:

‘Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it could not see. O death, where is your sting? O Hell, where is your victory? Christ is Risen, and you, O death, are destroyed! Christ is Risen, and evil is cast down! Christ is Risen, and angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and new life is set free! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, becomes the first-fruit of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen!’

On behalf of Fr Pat and the parish team we wish you a joy filled Easter and a peaceful rest or holiday [for those who are taking one].

Thank you one and all for your contribution to our parish in each of our communities. It is your dedication and good will

that makes the cogs go around in a very busy parish.

Special thanks to the Liturgy team and all the extra people you seconded for duties during Holy Week and The Easter Triduum. Liturgy is the core business of our parish and with all hands to the wheel we are able to celebrate with dignity and grace as we journey through Holy Week and the three day celebration of the Last supper, Death of Christ and the Resurrection.

What a privilege to celebrate together in peace, mercy, forgiveness and grace-filled joy. We can only do this because God first loved and graced us. Let us be forever grateful for these wonderful gifts we continue to receive and share with others.

EASTER

PRAYER

Glorify God!

God of new life,

At the beginning of creation

Your Spirit hovered over the waters

to sanctify the seas and the land.

God of Freedom,

You called your chosen people

to rise from the Red Sea of slavery.

God of Compassion,

Your Beloved Son was baptized by

John

and as he rose up from the waters,

was anointed with the Holy Spirit.

Through the Resurrection of Jesus

You have filled us with the same light.

May we always walk as radiant

witnesses to your love, your mercy,

your tender care and justice.

Creator, Saviour, Spirit of life,

guide us to be a seed of hope to our

families, communities and churches,

Bless all our relationships.

Give us gentleness, understanding,

patience and gratitude in the

expectations of others.

In humility and trust may we be the

Light of Christ filling our world with

hope, compassion and justice.

This we ask in the name of the Father,

the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Sacr ament

Program

Christian Initiation of Children of Catechetical age [Sacrament program for children] offers a year round registration. Children are prepared formally to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion. If your child is approximately 7 years of age call the parish office 3849 7158 to register and the process will be explained to you. These families will be made welcome at Mass and kept in our prayers during this special time.

In the past 7 years 21 people have walked the catechumenal journey to prepare for full initiation into the catholic church; All of these people have been accompanied by ordinary

everyday Catholics who have given their time to be part of the graced journey being undertaken;

People, both those enquiring, and those who are supporting them, meet in small groups of varying sizes, a mixture of ages and cultures and in various venues according to the needs of the group;

Many who have been initiated into the catholic faith in our parish are now active Ministers of the Word, Communion ministry, music ministry and include Isabelle and Steve who are members of the leadership team of the RCIA [catechumenal journey];

We are all on a journey of discovery and seeking a deeper relationship with Christ;

Anyone who wishes to join these groups are most welcome. For all enquiries please call Trish Ph: 3849 7158 You can come and join us as an inquirer or as a friend who walks the journey with us.
