They founded the school on the principles of student-centered learning, using the city as a resource to extend learning beyond the classroom, and preparing students to become critical thinkers with a passion for learning throughout their lives.

Considered progressive and forward-looking at the time, Urbans program is now nationally renowned, and widely emulated in schools throughout the country. Today, Urban is stronger than ever, leading the way in educational excellence, innovation and pedagogy, while adhering to its original core values and mission. Urban continues to be at the forefront in ensuring an inclusive, welcoming and accessible community, offering a rich and comprehensive academic curriculum, seamlessly integrating the use of digital tools, and providing a dynamic co-curricular program with outstanding offerings in music, theater, visual arts and athletics.

As you will see in this 2013-14 Annual Report, Urban continued its work in fulfilling our Vision 2017 strategic plan goals (for more updates, please see page 10). We supported our extraordinary teachers through enriching professional development experiences. To advance our Education for the 21st Century initiatives, we expanded our global education program with a new partnership and exchange program in Lille, France. We also introduced new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) curricula, including an Advanced Computer Science course and makers elective, Technology Lab, in which students built computers and designed and constructed devices using our 3D printer to solve problems they identified at school.

This is truly an exciting time for Urban as we prepare to break ground this spring on Phase 1 of the North Campus expansion, our new Academic and Athletics Center. For more details on this transformational project, please see page 7. As of December 1, we have raised $16.7 million toward this $28 million project, thanks to the incredible generosity of our community during our leadership fundraising phase. This spring we look forward to inviting all members of our community to participate in this singular project.

The many successes we achieved this year would not be possible without the incredible group of volunteers who give so much of their time and talent to the school. In particular, we would like to thank our Parent Board Co-Presidents Wendy Webster and Yvonne Keene, Capital Campaign Chair Terry Gamble Boyer, Alumni Council President Tara Wilson (95) and Auction Chair Julie Drummond. Special thanks are also extended to our Annual Fund Co-Chairs Barbara Gregoratos (74) and Teresa Keller, whose leadership helped the campaign surpass $1 million for the first time in the schools history.

We are tremendously grateful to all of our donors who supported the Annual Fund, Auction, Endowment, Class Funds and North Campus expansion. Your involvement and investment in the school strengthen the foundation of Urban, ensure that the school continues to thrive, and make a visible and meaningful difference for all of our students, faculty and programs. Thank you so very much.

FOUR YEARS AGO, AS WE SAT IN ST. AGNES GYM, MY SON WAS BURSTING WITH THE EXCITEMENT AND ENTHUSIASM THAT ACCOMPANY NEW BEGINNINGS WHEN WE ANTICIPATE GREAT THINGS. He was ready to begin his Urban journey. I, on the other hand, was daunted by the adventures-in-parenting that lay in wait for me. There was no Owners Manual for high school kids; no Quick Guide to Parenting through the teenage years; no neatly packaged, appropriate responses to the vitality of adolescence. On that New Freshman Welcome Day, I could not yet know that I had joined a vibrant community of remarkably talented, accomplished and informed parents with more than enough collective experience, good humor and wisdom to see me through these transformative years. If I knew then what I know now, I too would have embraced the anticipation of great things to come.

There are myriad attributes that make Urban the remarkable institution that it is. One that I have found particularly compelling among Urban parents is the belief that parents can, and should, inspire our teens and lead by example. If we hope to raise our children to be engaged adults, we need to get involved. If we encourage a passion for life-long learning, we need to seek out and embrace new experiences. If we want our teens nurtured in healthy networks, we must become builders of inclusive communities. To that end, The Urban Parents Association is designed to provide opportunities for parents to share time, energy and creative resources in support of the schools mission and core values in ways that connect us with our students, their daytime world of teachers, administrators and activities, and with each other.

Urban enjoys the support of many, many volunteers who work on the year-opening All-School Picnic, through the Auction in the spring, to the Senior Grad Night Party in June and every-thing in between. Thanks to the efforts of more than 60 volunteers in leadership positions on the Parent Board, we were able to provide a broad diversity of activities this year. Record numbers took advantage of perennial favorites such as Urban 101 for Parents and the Spring Panel of Graduating Seniors. Urban parents are a vital part of school life and I am deeply grateful to all volunteers for your generosity and commitment.

Improved communications and streamlining of Parent Board functions were the Executive Committees priorities this year. As Co-Presidents, Yvonne Keene and I focused our efforts on launching UrbanConnect and redesigning our welcome and outreach approach for new freshman families. UrbanConnect is a series of three events (one each term) designed to inform parents about what goes on at Urban, and why. At each meeting, Head of School Mark Salkind provides a State of Urban address, and parents are introduced to administrators and teachers who provide an inside look into their area of expertise and how it affects student life.

Looking ahead, we have an exceptionally strong leadership team in place next year and the Parent Board is in a good position to continue its outstanding service to Urban parents. You can anticipate great things!

    DONOR PROFILE

ALMA ROBINSON & TOYE MOSESTRUE BLUE SOCIETY 15-YEAR CIRCLE

ALMA ROBINSON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NON-PROFIT CALIFORNIA LAWYERS FOR THE ARTS, AND TOYE MOSES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTHEAST COMMUNITY FACILITY COMMISSION (A CITY AGENCY), WERE URBAN PARENTS FROM 1998 THROUGH 2002. THEIR SONS AKINTOYE GRADUATED FROM URBAN IN 2000 AND WILLIE IN 2002. ALMA ALSO SERVED ON URBANS BOARD OF TRUSTEES FROM 1999 THROUGH 2005.

DURING AKINTOYES SENIOR YEAR, ALMA HELPED TO CREATE THE SENIOR CLASS ENDOWMENT FUND, WHICH STILL CONTINUES AND HAS CONTRIBUTED MORE THAN $800,000 OVER THE YEARS TO HELP BUILD URBANS ENDOWMENT TO ITS CURRENT LEVEL OF $7.8 MILLION.

    IN THEIR WORDS:

Our son, Akintoye, came home from a boarding school in Massachusetts to start his junior year at Urban in 1998, as his brother, Willie, was starting as a freshman. Our experience as high school parents previously involved traveling to New England for parents weekends for several years, as our daughters, Isabelle and Toyin, had also attended boarding schools in New England. So we were delighted when our two sons were accepted at Urban.

By Akins senior year and Willies sophomore year, they were both starting on the varsity basketball team together a true highlight for our family! Instead of traveling across the country, it was great to travel across town to see their games and root for the Blues!

We continue to contribute to Urbans Annual Fund because our sons benefited so much from their experience there. Learning how you learn and how to evaluate and challenge yourself are great attributes of the Urban educational experience. And through service learning, students at Urban receive what may be the biggest gift of all, when they realize that they can contribute to community, that they have value and are worthy. We see the through-line in our sons growth and experiences after Urban.

Akins first service learning project was at De Avila School in the Haight, where he tutored Calvin, a 10-year old boy with severe emotional disabilities who could not read. By the end of the school year, Calvin was reading. After graduating with a degree in photography at NYU, Akin was hired as a photography teacher at an international school in So Paulo. He eventually earned a Masters in Special Education through the New York City Teaching Fellows Program and did additional post-graduate studies at the Gallatin School at NYU. After serving as middle school dean at the Arts and Letters School, a public school serving an underprivileged community in Brooklyn, NY, and teaching English at a charter school in Stockholm, Sweden, Akin has returned to Brazil and is now teaching English at the American School in Rio de Janeiro.

The roots of Willies career, too, began at Urban when he volunteered with a UCSF medical research project to help set up an educational website for teens living with HIV/AIDS. After graduating with a degree in psychology at Duke University and a year teaching middle school English and economics in the Dominican Republic, he attended UCSF for medical school and is in the research portion of his seven-year general surgery residency program at UCSF. He is currently working at the UCSF Mission Bay campus with a research team that is designing artificial kidneys and he eventually plans to continue his training with a fellowship in pediatric surgery.

Discovering your passion at Urban is not just a slogan; it really happens, and we cant thank the entire Urban community enough for all the encouragement and support.

  • THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2013-14 [ 7 ]

Urban is closer than ever to realizing our mission-driven aspirations of expanding and completing our campus with the necessary facilities that match the quality of our outstanding program. We are pleased to share that as of December 1, we have now raised a total of $16.7 million for Phase 1 of the North Campus expansion: a new Academic and Athletics Center. Our goal is to break ground on the new facility in May 2015, and to open the building for the 2016-17 school year. Meeting this goal will depend on raising all the funds needed for the project, as well as securing necessary city approvals.

Highlights of the Academic and Athletics Center include:

This project will be transformational for Urban. The additional space will enable the school to address our most pressing programmatic needs in academics and athletics. The new facilities will also significantly improve Urbans environment for teaching and learning, while providing more space for students, teachers and parents to gather and interact, formally and informally, in ways that build a stronger school community.

In a later Phase 2, we will convert the current St. Agnes gym into a Performing Arts Center for our drama and music programs.

We are profoundly grateful to everyone who has supported our North Campus expansion to date, and look forward to inviting our entire community to participate this spring.

  • [ 10 ] THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2013-14

ACCESSIBILIT Y: Urbans Vision 2017 strategic plan calls for increased accessibility, and in 2013-14 the school expanded its financial aid to more than $2.6 million to benefit 28 percent of Urbans talented and deserving students. The Admissions Department continued its outreach to more parochial and public schools, and organizations that support high-potential students from underserved backgrounds, such as A Better Chance, Aim High, Breakthrough Collaborative, Making Waves and Summer Bridge. We are pleased to share that the freshman class represents more than 35 different middle schools.

DIVERSIT Y AND INCLUSION: Strengthening and sustaining Urbans diverse, inclusive and welcoming community is central to Vision 2017. As part of our ongoing Inquiry for Equity work, 30 faculty, administrators and coaches met regularly across the year to reflect on teaching practices and work on improving the schools ability to teach to a wide range of learners. The January Professional Day, Finding our Place in the Conversation, provided options for all faculty, staff and administration to learn more about the Identity and Ethnic Studies freshman curriculum, the Service Learning program, or participate in a facilitated workshop on helping traditionally underrepresented students thrive at Urban.

EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY: Urban continues to be at the forefront of educational excel-lence, and to prepare students to thrive in our increasingly complex and interconnected society. This year we expanded our science offerings by introducing an Entomology class and re-launched Astronomy. We also started an advanced Computer Science class, modeled after college-level courses at UC Berkeley and MIT, and a Maker Course E-period elective where students experimented with our new 3-D printer. For the second year, a summer online Functions pre-calculus course was offered, allowing students greater flexibility in their schedules during the school year. We also finalized the list of courses for the Bay Area BlendEd Consortium, comprising five regional independent schools, which launches in Fall 2014.

ATHLETICS: Our athletics program had another incredible year, with 60+ percent of our students participating in at least one team during the year. Girls Varsity Soccer won the BCL West League Championship, and Girls JV had its second undefeated season in a row. The Boys Fencing team won its first-ever citywide AAA league title and added our first fencing banner on the gym wall. Boys Lacrosse had the most wins since it began three years ago. Boys Basketball had a fantastic season, coming second in the league. Girls Softball qualified for the NCS Tourney, and the Boys and Girls Cross Country and Track teams continued their excellence and qualified for both the NCS and CIF state finals. Golf had a strong season, with a team member qualifying for the individual NCS tournament, and Boys Tennis was a top 4 seed entering the league playoffs. This was the first year the Swim team competed at the league level since it was formed in 2012-13 and they had a strong start. Go Blues!

    T H E A N N U A L F U N D

AT W O R KT H E 2 0 1 3 - 1 4 A N N U A L F U N D raised a record $1 million for the first time in the schools history, thanks to the incredible outpouring of support from our community. The Annual Fund is critical in balancing the schools budget and benefiting all aspects of the school: academics, co-curricular activities, accessibility and most importantly, our teachers and students. In addition, gifts to the Annual Fund make a visible difference toward accomplishing and completing our ambitious strategic plan goals in Vision 2017: Creating a Sustainable Future. Following are a few highlights of how the Annual Fund directly supports Urbans mission and aspirations:

  • THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2013-14 [ 11 ]

FACILITIES: A key goal of Vision 2017 is to provide students and faculty with the best possible facilities to support a well-rounded, whole-student educational experience. We are closer than ever to realizing our dream of a new Academic and Athletics Center, with plans to break ground on the new facilities in Spring 2015. For a complete update on the North Campus expansion, please see page 7.

FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILIT Y: Vision 2017 calls for Urbans continued, prudent focus on managing expenses and growing revenue. We are pleased to share that our generous community collectively contributed more than $1.2 million to the operating budget via the Annual Fund and Auction, a significant amount for a school of our size and history. Additionally, Urban has continued to grow its endowment, which is now valued at $7.8 million, through individual and family donations and the Class Endowment Fund program to preserve the Urban experience for years to come.

WORKING AT URBAN: Urbans commitment to attracting and retaining faculty and staff to translate the mission of the school into every practice has been a focal point of Vision 2017. This year faculty participated in myriad programs that influenced and informed their teaching, disciplines and pedagogy, including Harvards Project Zero on curricular design, Joe Goode Performance Groups Finding the Bones movement workshop in San Francisco, the National Science Teachers Conference in Portland, OR, and the National Endowment for Humanities The Roots of Arab Spring at UC Davis, a tuition-free, highly selective conference. Urban also launched its Summer Sabbatical Program, a component of Vision 2017, and was able to send a faculty member to East Asia. Over the summer, the entire History department worked together on an extensive collaborative curriculum development project to revise the core American History sequence.

PARTICIPATION: We are so grateful for the participation of our entire Urban community in supporting the Annual Fund, including current and alumni families and trustees, alums, grandparents, faculty and staff, as well as friends of the school. We are especially honored that 100 percent of the faculty gave to the effort. Additionally, current parent participation reached 93 percent, and overall alumni participation was an inspiring 11 percent, both among the highest of our peer Bay Area independent high schools.

Thank you one and all for leading the way for our students, teachers and programs!

2013-14 ANNUAL FUND VOLUNTEERSWe would like to extend our appreciation to all the volunteers who worked on the Annual Fund, and especially to our dedicated and extraordinary Parent Co-Chairs, Barbara Gregoratos (74) and Teresa Keller, as well as all our amazing Class Captains, whose outreach and leadership ensured the success of this years Annual Fund campaign.

Urbans Annual Fund raised more than $1 million for the first time in the schools history, thanks to the generous and meaningful participation among our trustees, parents, grandparents, alums, alumni parents, faculty, staff and other members of our community.

We extend our deepest thanks to the following donors for their investment in our students, teachers and programs during the 2013-14 Annual Fund campaign.

MONTH OF UNDERSTANDINGIn January, the annual Month of Understanding, themed Shame Less, featured guest speakers, activities, events and panel discussions with students and teachers to engage in important conversations around multiculturalism, inclusion and living the schools core values.

CLASS OF 2014 ENDOWMENT FUND DONORSMarket Value as of June 30, 2014: $22,800

Senior class endowment giving was started by parents in the Class of 2000 as a way to give back to Urban and leave a meaningful legacy. In 2009, this effort was expanded to include students, grandparents and friends. The Class of 2014 continued this tradition and we are thrilled to share that 100 percent of the seniors participated with five-year pledges! Gifts to Class Endowment Funds are unrestricted and allow the school to allocate funds to the most pressing needs and the greatest opportunities at any particular time. Many thanks to the following donors for their thoughtful gifts to their Class Endowment Funds during the 2013-14 year.

  • THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 2013-14 [ 25 ]

2013-14 was an exciting time for Urbans Alumni Association. LeRoy Votto continued as our Alumni Ambassador and his authentic enthusiasm and joy for connecting alums to the Urban of today bring wonderful energy to the program.

WE HAD A ROBUST SERIES OF REUNIONS, EVENTS AND PROGRAMS FOR ALUMS THIS YEAR. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO JOINED US!

All-Alumni Reunion Weekend We were delighted to welcome back more than 100 alums to our fifth annual All-Alumni Reunion weekend and decade reunions for the classes of 1983, 1993 and 2003 in October.

Los Angeles Reunion We held our first-ever reunion in Los Angeles in May, bringing together 30+ alums at The Roof on Wilshire atop The Hotel Wilshire.

Recent Grad ReunionOur Recent Grad Reunion in January was popular, and alums enjoyed seeing their friends and faculty.

Downtown Happy Hour In June, we had a successful downtown happy hour at The Press Club in San Francisco, giving alums the opportunity to network and connect with each other.

Alumni Speaker SeriesSeveral alums, including Erin Berg (08), Luke Harrington (93), Mollie Hudson (08), Sam Reider (07) and Alexis Thacker (01), came to Urban to speak to students about their careers and experiences.

Alumni PanelsA group of alums who played in Urbans jazz bands came back in September to speak to students about their musical studies and pursuits post-high school, and a wonderful panel of alums met with seniors in May to share their advice on how to navigate college and thrive both personally and academically.

And special thanks to the many alums who also visited Urban, tutored students, interviewed prospective applicants, coached, interned and attended arts and sporting events! We are so grateful for your enthusiasm and
