The project was taken up as a live project which could be taken into the public domain for application. And also was an initiative to improve the quality of the city life in terms of its urban development and need. The project was a class exercise and was ultimately taken to the PMC and the Traders Association in Pune for creating awareness about the potential of this old and popular commercial street of Pune and to push for its development. The class was divided into groups of 8 and extensive documentation, study and analysis was carried out and various options for possible proposals were given in form of design.

History of Pune : • Core of the city was formed due to

settlement in the area surrounded by hills and on the banks of the river Mutha.

• However due to congestion in the core area, the city grew in a radial manner in the surrounding areas.

Commercial History of the city: • A distinct feature of the commercial

structure of the old core city is the division of the city into alleys according to the occupations of people living in a particular area and having the same occupation.

• These alleys are existent from the very formation of the city.

• They have been names according to the occupation carried out in them, or by name of the family that used to own the particular alleys.

• Throughout, these alleys consist of a mixed land use of residential spaces on the 1st floor and workplace and shop on the ground floor.

History of Laxmi road: • Located in the heart of the city, Laxmi road is a popular shopping hub for

over decades. This road stretches over 3 kms, offers an array of shopping stores varying from clothes to jewelry and eve street hawkers.

• This is one place where you will find people from every strata of society shopping with equal gusto. Unlike the malls, Laxmi road always witnesses genuine buyers. Be it handkerchiefs or dress material, large no. of people still prefer to shop here.

Laxmi road through the day: • The traffic on Laxmi road was documented at different points along the

road and at 3 hr intervals during the day to understand the flow of traffic and the congestion area were marked, along with the modes of transport going through the road daily.

• The road was also documented at points where it bottlenecked, to understand the flow of traffic.

Broad Policy: A broad policy for the treatment that can be done along the whole length of Laxmi road to keep a certain uniformity that was required ,was designed in two stages. The 1st stage was to channelize the traffic by giving separate lanes for public and private transport. The 2nd stage develops it into a completely public transport road that in turn becomes more pedestrian friendly and improves the whole shopping experience and solving the traffic issue significantly.

Stage 1: Two lanes for bus and motorized vehicles.

Stage 2: One lane only for public transport.

This policy was demonstrated on one section of Laxmi road. The design requirement for this area varies according to its needs but the basic policy remains. The footpath is widened to encourage people to use them and also gives proper areas for the numerous hawkers seen along it. The two edges along the road are connected for pedestrian crossing to be made easier , by changing the texture of the road surface.

Varying road widths because of difference in space occupied by hawkers and available road widths for pedestrians.

• Ram mandir is a prominent landmark and an historical temple. • Its courtyard value has been lost due to buildings built nearby. • There are various small entrances being created to entre the

temple premises. • It has lost its identity due to improper entrances.

• Swami Samarth Math is a very well known Math in Tulsibaugh, and it is known only to those people who visit it regularly.

• But for people visiting it for the 1st time it becomes very difficult for them to locate the Math as it is hidden between built mass and also has very small entrances.

Design Strategy: • Developing overall Tulsibaugh. • Providing temporary arrangemnt for

hawkers. • Giving identity to entry poitns. • Developing activity areas using surface

textures. • Enhacing entrances of temple complexes.

Enhancing Entrances of Temple Complexes. • Ram Mandir and Swami Samarth Math. • Restrict entry to a 2 point within tulsibaugh

itself. • Overhead signage to be placed at entrance. • Clear area around entrance and restrict hawker

activity in defined area. • Providing lighting at entrances.

Giving Identity to Entry Points • Giving identity to entrance points into Tulsibaugh by changing surface texture

and changing level in the specific area. • Creating an organized pedestrian and vehicular area. • Channelizing traffic by maintaining constant width of road. • Providing map of Tulsibaugh indicating entry points and important shops and

structures.

Providing Temporary Arrangement for Hawkers • Providing defined areas for hawkers and shop extensions by

permanent poles placed at regular intervals. • Restricting awning length,. • Restricting the heights of hawkers shop extensions. • Defining pedestrian path and hawker area by different

textures.

Permanent poles are provided to shopkeepers and hawkers for easy demarcation of allowable area to be used by them and for display of items along with tying of awnings.. Area to be used by hawkers is demarcated. Awnings to be placed at an height of 2m.

To address the issue of creating some kind of uniformity along with hawkers restricting the height at which the awnings are to be. Making their area permanent in a way without constructing the pedestrian and residential people movement to the street.

• Entrance to Ram Mandir restricted to 2 entry points. • Four other entry points are closed to maintain and

conserve the courtyard of the temple.

The road to Mandai is wide and is not completely used. Half of the width is used by pedestrians and hawkers selling temple goods. The use of the road is maximized by channelizing the traffic and providing a uniform footpath and plaza at entrance to Tulsibaugh, and also providing places for hawkers.

Surface treatment at entrance to Tulsibaugh, and also it connection to the opposite block.

Sections showing conditions at entrance and within temple premises.

Overhead shades provided at regular intervals in order to provide shade to shoppers.

Entry points restricted to only two. One connected to the main road and one from within Tulsibaugh.
