HYDROLOGY, WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING PhD proposal for CsF Germany RuhrUniversität Bochum (RUB) Proposal Topic: Urban Flood Modeling Dual Drainage Proposal Summary: Simulation of Urban Flooding in urban areas is achieved by Dual Drainage models (DD) whereby both above ground and sewer network are modeled simultaneously. Currently a Dual Drainage models simulation is a computationally expensive process which can take several hours or even days to complete (Leandro, et al 2009). Alternatives to DD Models are simplified surfacerunoff Models (Leandro, et al 2012) or simplified DD Models (Leandro, et al 2011). The former have acceptable computational but limited application and later require sophisticated Models to be calibrated. This proposal aims to develop a new DualDrainage model that will enable Urban Flooding to be simulated faster while keeping its main representativeness. The goal is to reduce computational time and allow engineers to test many flooding scenarios than current DD models. RuhrUniversität Bochum (RUB) General description The RUB is on its way to becoming one of the leading European universities of the 21st Century. Our excellence programs have made themselves an international name: Our Research School is an international college for structured doctoral research in the life sciences, natural sciences, engineering, the humanities and social sciences. Interfaculty and interdisciplinary Research Departments, which are mutually, nationally and internationally networked, sharpen the profile of the RUB. Added to this is an unsurpassed program for the promotion of Early Career Researchers, and an excellent infrastructure. The Institute of Hydrology, Water Resources Management and Environmental Engineering has 1520 members, who are working, among other topics, with computer systems in the development and application of flood forecasting systems and new principles for flood dimensioning of water management storagesystems. Supervisors and expertise Dr. Jorge Leandro currently leads the DFG project GZ: LE 3220/11 and supervises three PhD students with grants SFRH/BD/85783/2012, SFRH/BD/81869/2011 and SFRH/PROTEC/67486/2010 in the field of Urban Drainage. He has successfully leaded a FCT project PTDC/AACAMB/101197/2008 at IMAR/DECUC and supervised 7 MSc student theses. During his PhD he has been recognized with two awards (one UK national and one International). For further information please consult: 1 and 2. Key selected publications Leandro, J., J. P.
