The conversion of wind energy into a useful
form of energyMost productive in open windy spaces
Neighboring to urban areasRelatively near to an existingpower grid
Climatically stableenvironments

Positioning the body inthe most optimumlocation
Aligning the generatorwith the body andharnessing the pedals
The internalworking of anordinary

5/20
One of the oldest forms of eco-friendly
power generation
Requires the least amount of startupfinances as compared to almost everyother urban power generation method(solar, thermal, hydel)
ideal for generation of power to light a
small town for 4 hours every day

Depends heavily upon climactic conditions,
too high or too low wind velocities notfeasibleToo low velocities would not producesufficient Voltage;Too high velocities may damage the shaft oreven the stator.
For sufficient urban powergeneration, a considerablylarge number of windmillswould be required.

Generation of useable power through Sunlight
Ideal for capita level power generation,i.e. per house or per residential locality
A sufficient amount of opensky is required

How it works
Sunlight is incident on thesemiconductor Silicon Platesor Solar Panels.
The electrons on the surfaceof the plates get extraenergy and jump to higherlevels.
These electrons when connected trough acircuit display a net potential differenceand thus current flows.

Primary Advantages
Apart from installation costs, solar panelsrequire very little maintenance and arethus very cost-effective on the long run
Can be easily designed to
optimize power generation byvariety of sizes shapes structures.

10/20
Primary disadvantages
Like wind power, forsufficient PowerGeneration, a very largenumber of panels would berequired.
Even today the cost of a single set of solarpanels is equivalent to the price of half aton of coal

Tidal Power
Generation of power through tidal kinetic
energyMost conveniently used in coastalregions
A few geographic restrictions exist;the turbine cannot be built on a steepcoast
Very effective in areas where power
demand is low but infrastructure ispoor.

How it works
When the tideenters, thearmaturerotates to asufficientvelocity
generating acurrent
The identicalphenomenon
occurs when thetide goes out.
Commutator rings help maintain polarity
-

13/20
Primary Advantages
The rise and fall of the tide is consistent, which makes it very predictable andreliable.
Tidal energy does not dependon the weather
The making of electricity inthis way is usually not verycostly, Also tides are active 24hours a day
-
7/31/2019 Urban Power Generation Presentation
14/20
Primary disadvantages
Right now tides do not produce alot of electricity so its not very
efficient.
Barrages across river estuaries can
change the flow of the water, andbecause of that it is the place forbirds and other wildlife to live, because of this, there are somewildlife that could be in danger.
These two mackerel had gotten inside the turbineshaft container, as a result the generator wasshut down for 8 eight hours

Hydel power Generationthe production of electrical powerthrough the use of the gravitationalforce of falling or flowing water.
Once constructed:
the project produces no directwaste
Has a considerably lower output level of
the greenhouse gascarbon dioxide(CO2) than fossil fuel powered energyplants
The Three Gorges Dam in China, the largesthydro-electric power station in the world.

How it works
Water is accumulated in a greatreservoir/dam and droppedfrom a great height.
The turbine velocity increaseswith increase in depth ofturbine in reservoir.
The generator power supply cords are thus connectedto the urban main supply units.

17/20
Primary AdvantagesLargest, cheapest renewable source of energy
does not pollute the atmosphere
very low operating costs.
respond to utility load demands
-

18/20
Primary Disadvantages
Construction of dams is expensive
causes habitats to change, therebyendangering local and surroundingwildlife, earthquakes, landslides etc
produce large amounts of carbon dioxide andmethane from rotting vegetation.
Bhakra NangalDam wasconstructed at acost of Rs 245
Crores in 1948.
