Perennial Grasses:

Purple nutsedge - nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus) Yellow nutsedge - nutgrass (Cyperus esculentus)

3.

Existing stands of nlltgrass must be turned under and chopped up thoroughly before tre~tment. For nut grass control VERNAM 7-E must be thoroughly mixed into the soil prior to planting or applied subsurface to the so;l with injectors or sweeps. Cultivation is suggested in addition to VER~AM 7-E treatment in fields with moderate to heavy nutgrass infestations.

GENERAL USE PRECAUTIONS

Read entire label before using.

VERNAH 7-E should be used only for recommended purposes and at recommended rates (do not overdose).

, - __ I

Failure to follow label instructions, or use on crops not specifica11y listed on th2 label may result in trOp injury or destruction.

Applied according to directions and under norm~l growing conditions, VERNAM 7-E will not harm the treated crop. Malformation of the primary leaves is not unusual. This condition is only temporary and will not affect yields. During germination and early stages of growth, extended periods of unusually cold and wet or hot and dry weather, insect or plant disease attack, the use of certain soil-applied syste~ic insecticides, improperly placed fertilizers or soil insecticides may create abnormal conditions that weaken crop seedlings. VERNAM 7-E used under these abnormal conditions cculd result in crop injury.

VERHAM 7-[ is reco~mended for use or ninera~ soils only. Do not tJnk mix VERNAM 7-E with insecticides or fungicides. Do not contaminate irrigation water or water used for domestic purposes. In irrigated areas, do not apply VERNAM 7-E before pre-irri ation.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE OF VERNAM 7-E

IT IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW TO USE THIS PRODUCT IN A MANNER INCONSISTENT WITH ITS LABELING.

VERNAH 7-E is a selective herbicide which is mixed (incor.por.ated) into the soil or applied below the surface of the soil f&P'~6ntrol of weeds listed on this label. VERNAM 7-E ~ontrols annu~\.xeeds as their seeds germinate by interfering with normal germ~atton and seedling development. It does not control established ~eeds. All weed growth and cro~ stubble should be thoroughly wo~e~: into the soil before treatment.

APPLICAIION DIPECTIO~S

Pour the recommended amount of VFRNA~ 7-E into the spray tank during the filling operation. Ap~ly in 10 to SO gallons of

4.

water per acre using a properly ca'i~ra~ed. low-pressure (20 to

[l r'.,1 1 1 )\

40 PSI) sprayer having good agitation. The soil should be wellworked and dry enough to permit good soil ~ixing (incorporation) or subsurface application. Soil should be as free as possible of trash for subsurface application with sweeps or injectors. Avoid overlaps that will increase dosage above recommended limits.

FLUID FERTILIZER STATEMENT

VERNAH 7-E may be combined with fluid (solution. slurry. or suspension) fertilizers. However. physical compatibility with thes fluid fertilizers must be determined before combining in the spray tank. See Appendix I for directions regarding these combinations.

DRY FERTILIZER STATEMEnT

VERNAM 7-E may be impregnated on many dry bulk fertilizers for use on registered crops. However, uniform distribution of VERNAM on fertilizer particles and unifor~ application are necessary to assure good results. See Appendix II for information and directions for impregnation and use.

INCOqPO~ATION DIRECTIO~S { ItsT ."IUIU con] VERNAM 7-E must be incorporated into the soil immediately (within minutes) to prevent loss of the herbicide. Whenever possible, application and incorporction should be done in the same operation.

SOIL MIXING (INCORPORATION) BEFORE PLANTING: Use power-driven cultIvation equipment eet to Ctlt to a depth of 2 to 3 inches or tandem disc; set to cut to a depth of 4 to 6 inches, operated at 4 to 6 mph, followed by a spiked-tooth harrow or some other leveling device whic'1 extends beyond ends of the disc. For thorough mixing, disc in two different dire~tions (cross disc). Prior to the second discing, raise the disc to prevent cutting deeper than 4 to 6 inches.

NOT~: In the southern lowor Delta of the Hississippi Valle~, dISc incorporation is rot recommended on the heavy (gumbq}'~lay sells. • • .......

• SOI!.:...-'1JXING (INCORPORATION) AFTER Plf,NTING: Use power-driv~n curtl~ation equipment set to cut to a depth of Z inches, ~r.dn (OUS' textured (light) soils only, ground-driven tillers -(r-ollin:;J c~ltivdtors. rotary hoe, rOw wheels, etc.) set to cut to a dEpth of I-liZ inches and operated at 6 to B ~ph. When incorporating after planting, care must be taken not to disturb the crop seed or seedlings by adjusting tines or blades of incorporatior. e1uipment so they are not directly over the drill row.

SUBSURFACE APPLICATION R[FORE OR AT PlANTIUG (for peanuts and soybeans only): Special equipment designed for subsurface application HUST be used. Injector units ~ust be rigidly .ounted on or

Soil Injection -- Injector shan~s must be spaced 2-1/2 to 3 inches apart and mounted in staggered positions to avoid trash buildup. Set shanks to inject VERNAM 7-£ 1-1/2 to 3 inches below the soil surface. The width of the band in which weed control is desired will determine the number and spacing of injector shanks required per row. (Example: Four injector shanks spaced 3 inches apart gives a lZ-inch band). A broadcast application can be made by increasing the n~mber of shanks. The two shanks adjacent to the drill row must be 1-1/4 to l-l/Z inches on either side of it.

Covered Sweeps -- Set the sweeps to run 3 to 4 inches below the SOlI surface. Cal ibrilte by measuring the spray band width at the back edge of the sweep, not the sweep width. For BROADCAST APPLICATIONS, stagger sweeps on double tool bar so that they overlap sufficiently to allow spray bands to meet

NOTE: When applying with sweeps, VERNAM 7-E must be applied deep enough to allow 3 to 4 inches of soil to remain over the treatment after the planting operation.

PLANTING -- SOYBEANS, PEANUTS

Do not plant seed deeper than 2 inches. For VERNAM 7-E application made before planting. seeding can be done immediately, or it may be delayed up to 10 days. If it is necessary to work the soil following application and incurvoration, but before planting, do not work the soil deeper than the depth the herbicide was incorporated. To avoid removing VER~A~ 7-E from the row (with loss of weed control in the row) do not ~ove or shape s01l after treatment, such as by planting in deep furrows.

RECOMMENDATIONS - VERNAM 7-E

These recommendations are given in terns of broadcast (overall) rates of VERNAM 7-£ per acre. For band or row application, reduce broadcast rates proportionately, depending upon band width to be

• • ••••• treated and row spacIng.

For thorough incorporation, use the following equipment: TANDEM DISC: Set to cut 3 to 6 inches operated at 4-6 mph, followed by a spike-toothed harrow or some other leveling device, which extends beyond the ends of the aisc. For thorough mfxing, disc in tW? different directions (cross-disc).

OR: POWER ~R!VEN cultivation e~uipment (tillers, cuitivators, hoes) set to cut 2 to 3 inches deep.

~hallow incorporation of less than 2 inches may result in erratic weed control.

PlANTI NG:

Peanuts should be planted within 48 hours after the combination has been applied to obtlin the rnaximu~ period of weed ~ontrol during the growing season,

How to use VERNAH8 7-E and TREFLAN 4-EC as a spray tank mix for weed control on soybeans.

A tank mix combination of VERNAH 7-E (7 pounds active ingredient per 9al10n) and TREFLAN E.C. (4 pounds of active ingredient per gallon) c~n be used prior to planting for weed control in soybeans.

The combination will contrel a broader spectrum of weeds than either material used alone. This includes tough we~ds such as nutsrass, velv~tleaf, foxtails, johnsongrass, redroot pigweed and wild cane.

Dependable performanc~ -- because the herbicides are mixed into the soil, rainfall is not needed to move them into the weed germinating zone. They are already there to kill grass and broadleaf weeds when they s~rout.

fo' impregnating pesticid~s on dry fertilizers, use a closed rotary-drum mixer or a similar type of closed blender equipped with suitable spray equipnltnt. The spray nOlzle (or nozzles) shGuld be positioned inside of the mixer to provide uniform spray coverage uf the tumbling fertil~zer. For the vrRNAM-7-~/ TREFlAN '-EC combination, premix in the proper use ratio to prepare a Ilnifol'm solution for joint soray impregnation. The physical propertie. of fertilizers vary, particularly in liqUld absorptive capacity. When absorptivity is sufficient, simple spray impregnati'ln of the fertil izer with VERrlAM 7-E or VERNAM 7-E/TREFLAN 4-EC orovides a satisfactory, dry mixture. If the absorptive capacity is inadequate, use of a highly absorptive p0wd~r i~ required to rrovide a dry, flowable mixture. Microcel E (Johns-Manville Products Corp.) is the recommended absorbent powder. It should be added separately and uniformly to the prEpared VERNAM 7E or VER~ AM 7-E/TREFLAN 4-"C fertil izer mixture, in a quantity that is sufficient to provide a suitably flowable mixture. Generally

less than 2~ by weight of Microcel E is req~lred. The amount of product actually required in the manufacture of individual fertilizer mixture should be determined c~refully for each production operation. This is necessary to ensure that the amount of VER~AM 7-E/TREFLAN 4~EC actually contained in the mixture applied ~o the soil
