The Katyn Massacre – a poignant tribute…

A sombre, moving commemorative from the Mint of Poland, this poignant coin marks the 70th anniversary of one of the darkest moments of WWII – the Katyn Massacre. The Katyn Massacre originally referred only to the murder of Polish

military officers by Russian forces in a forest near the village of Katyn, Russia in 1940. However, as this was one of several mass executions carried out by the Soviet Secret Police, the NKVD, the term ‘Katyn Massacre’ now represents the systematic liquidation

of approximately 22,000 Polish nationals at a variety of sites in April and May of 1940. A horrifying reminder of the brutality of war, the Mint of Poland was authorised to create a fitting legal tender commemorative to mark the 70th anniversary of the tragedy. With
