FROM THE COVER:
Her Fearless Majesty…It is 1848 and revolution is breaking out across Europe. In Britain, one
woman stands between order and chaos: Queen Victoria. Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) stars as the young-but-fearless monarch — facing a crisis that threatens to end her reign, on Victoria, Season 3, premiering Sunday, Jan. 13 at 8 pm/9 Mtn.
Victoria Season 3 introduces fascinating new historical characters, including: the vainglorious Lord Palmerston (Laurence Fox, Inspector Lewis), who clashes with the queen over foreign policy; and Victoria’s troubled half-sister, Princess Feodora, (Kate Fleetwood, Harlots).
Season 3 finds Victoria pregnant with her sixth child; but her mind is elsewhere — namely with the social unrest that threatens to unseat the aristocracy all over Europe.
ALSO ON THE COVER:
Our Painful Past —During World War II, nearly the entire West Coast population of Japanese-
Americans were forced to give up homes and businesses and were incarcerated. Their only crime? — looking like the enemy. Of the 120,000 imprisoned, two-thirds were American citizens; many were women and children. It has been called “our worst wartime mistake.”
KSPS presents Injustice at Home: Looking Like the Enemy, an hour-long special that recounts this infamous chapter in American history, with particular insight into its impact on those in the Inland Pacific Northwest. The program airs several times in February and premieres Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 pm/8 Mtn.
This project has been nearly a year in the making, and was made possible in part by the very generous participation and financial support of Hifumi En, the Japanese-American society of the Greater Spokane area. We particularly wish to thank the members of Hifumi En for their support and for graciously sharing their stories.
Partners for Television that WORKS KSPS greatly appreciates the Spokane Workforce
Council for their partnership and support of our mission of lifelong learning and our workforce development initiative called CareerExplore NW! Their partnership brings accurate data to the project, support for the creation of educational videos and guidance as we create this community resource for our region.
The Spokane Workforce Council is a business-led board that works to identify and fill gaps in our local workforce. They bring together businesses, government, labor, education, economic development and community-based organizations to create a vibrant economy by preparing a skilled workforce to meet regional business needs. They operate a service delivery system that consists of two career centers, WorkSource Spokane and the Next Generation Zone and 17 affiliated sites across Spokane County.
The Spokane Workforce Council has its finger on the pulse of the regional economy. They track labor market trends and work in direct partnership with WorkSource Spokane providing a powerful array of services for local businesses. Their American Job Center, WorkSource Spokane, typically serves almost 8,000 unique customers each year, providing them with career services that connect skill development and job placement to fuel business growth and the Next Generation Zone serves over 1,000 youth customers annually. Spokane Workforce Council offers tailored services to area businesses, including recruiting assistance, job postings, employee training, labor market information and more.
Please join us in thanking the Spokane Workforce Council for their work in our region and for their support of KSPS Public Television and our efforts!

Your membership contribution has helped make this documentary possible. On behalf of every viewer, thank you for your support of all the programs we will enjoy together in 2019.

• Sandra Williams’ Spokane newspaper, Black Lens, focuses on people, events and issues important to the Northwest’s African American community.

…And More Thanks!Of course every Membership Campaign is crucial to continuing the mission of KSPS; but the December campaign always
carries an extra degree of significance: it is the last one of the year and sets the tone for a successful year ahead. As the old saying goes, "The devil is in the details" — and the details that make an on-air campaign go smoothly and look good to the viewers at home are due to the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. Happy New Year!Welcome to 2019, when old friends are coming back, new friends are just on the horizon and we’ll
take you everywhere — even to the moon and back!
First up, Victoria makes her triumphant return to KSPS on January 13th. It’s 1848 and Her Majesty is faced with a revolution that threatens her monarchy, while dealing with the stress and strain of her growing family. How will this impact the Royals and those closest to them? Stay tuned. And for those of you who can’t get enough of Royal watching, we’ve got a couple of extra programs for you — Victoria and Albert: The Wedding (January 13th and 20th), a re-creation of the event that set the standard for Royal Weddings.
But wait, there’s more — Antiques Roadshow is back on January 7th! New cities, new treasures and a new look! The look may be new but the items are still priceless — sometimes. The debut episode includes family heirlooms, thrift store finds…and…well, you’ll just have to watch.
On Nature, over two weeks, we’ll travel around the world to find out more about an animal that can be used for work, play or to just watch and enjoy their beauty and majesty: Equus: The Story of the Horse debuts on January 16th.
Finding Your Roots is back on January 8th with a new set of people finding out their own backstory — from actors (Felicity Huffman, Laura Linney and Kal Penn) and authors (George R.R. Martin,) to politicians (Marco Rubio, Paul Ryan.) The program I call “The Antiques Roadshow of Genealogy” always surprises and rarely disappoints.
And that’s just the first part of the year…over the summer we’ll count down to the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing with a series of programs about the race to the moon and what it took to get there first.
And in the fall, Ken Burns will do some exploring of his own…on a subject near and dear to many: the history of Country Music. The stories will be great — the music better — and all of it right here on KSPS. More on these over the next few months.
As you can see, we’ve got a pretty nice buffet set up. Please feel free to sample what you want, devour as much as you please…and just know when you’re done, we’ll still be serving up more great programs for you all year long.
Enjoy!
The 411 on the QCD from Your IRA…PDQ!As age 70½ rolls around for some of us, the required minimum distribution from our IRAs can have tax benefits, if
handled properly. A “Qualified Charitable Distribution” (QCD) from your IRA is subtracted from your pre-tax income; and while it is not a tax deduction, it can be a savings…and it isn’t a year-end thing! Always check with your financial advisors. If it works for you, remember KSPS Public Television qualifies to accept your QCD — and preserve that tax advantage! Thanks for keeping KSPS strong and vibrant with your generous gifts!
A Trip Short on Distance…Long on Substance
Globetrotter and recognized European travel guru Rick Steves broke from the norm recently to make a short hop over the mountains from his home in Edmonds, Washington to give a talk in Spokane — and join us in the KSPS studios!
Rick personally hosted ('live on-set') a sampling of new excursions from his upcoming 10th season of Rick Steves' Europe, as part of our winter membership campaign. We are always grateful for Rick sharing his time with us — and for the extra nuggets of travel advice he imparts when he is here. Thank you, Rick!

Year-End Giving: A "Thank You"…and an "It's Not Too Late"No matter our age, background or political inclinations — we all love to explore, imagine and be inspired. We also need to
know the truth about the forces that affect our lives. That’s why KSPS is so important — AND so deserving of your year-end support. As a Public Television station, KSPS has been built on a bedrock of excellence and integrity and a cornerstone of curiosity. This welcoming home for the best Public Television has to offer is funded by the very people who value it: You and I and the members of this community and nation who choose to make this essential service our home. That’s why your special year-end donation today is so critical. Please call or click today to contribute to the 2018 year end goal: 800-735-2377 or www.KSPS.org Thank you.
Watch for Matching Gift Opportunity —Thinking of chipping in a significant charitable gift this year? Keep any eye out for an opportunity to leverage your gift to

13 at 8: pm.
