SouthwestThe southwest was the land of the Anasazi.Long after they left the that area became home to the: Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes. The dry weather made living there a challenge. Some people lived in cliff dwellings but others lived in pueblos (towns).Since there werent much trees they built houses out of Adobe. The Navajo built circular houses called hogans.Corn and beans were the main crops and they made stews with them and also added chili peppers.

Great BasinThis is a low lying region between the Rocky and Sierra mountains in California. It is a dry area with grass, scraggy trees, and sagebrush. It got really hot in summer and really cold in winter so the Natives searched for food and shelter.Seeds and berries were the main food but they also ate: ducks, snakes, and rabbits. If the weather was nice people would camp outside.Other times they would sleep in: caves, canyons, huts, and hills. Two tribes were the crow and the Nez Pierce.

NorthwestThis goes from the North of California to the border of Canada (northwest part).Winters are cold and summers are cool. The area is covered with dense forest, mountains, and plenty of rain. The Chinook and the Tillamook fished the oceans in canoes and hunted seals and whales with harpoons. They hunted salmon with fences and hunted beaver elk and moose. They shells and ivory art, carved wood into totem poles.

Great PlainsThis region stretches from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi river. Before European settlers moved west the land was mostly flat with a few trees.Huge herds of bison (buffalo) roamed the area, which supplied food and clothes for thousands. The tribes were: Arapaho, Apache, Cheyenne, and Dakota. This region had hot summers and super cold winters.A nice buffalo skin cote was very useful back then.Buffalo was also good for other things such as: Shields and Blankets with the hide, hair and sinew made bowstrings and ropes, horns were used as containers, and skin was used to make tepees.

Eastern WoodlandsEast of the Mississippi is the Eastern Woodlands. Two large American Indian groups was the: Iroquois and the Algonquin.Pocahontas was a member of the Powhatan tribe which was one of the Algonquian tribes. The Eastern Woodland people relied on trees and rivers.Men fished. They hunted: bear, beaver, and deer. They cleared the land so women could plant: beans, corn, and tobacco.Women gathered berries and wild plants and made deer skin into clothingPeople traveled in streams by bark canoes. They built long houses with logs covered in bark.Sometimes the long houses measured 20 by 100 feet.

Bacons RebellionDefinitionsRumination- a thought or ponderingContemplation- a deep thought or reflection

Bacons Rebellion happened in 1676 in Jamestown, Virginia. In Jamestown there were high taxes, low tobacco prices, and problems about trading in Europe.Hailstorms, floods, and crops destroyed plants and Indians usually would destroy plantation. The governor ignored the farmers but an Englishman named Nathaniel Bacon stepped up and asked permission to drive the Indians away with the army. The governor refused because the friendly Indians traded with them.Bacon took a group of volunteer soldiers anyways and led a raid. The soldiers Bacon took attacked Indians that didnt even have anything to do with the attack. The governor called Bacon a rebel and had him guilty for treason but Bacon had over 500 soldiers take over Jamestown. They controlled from July to September in 1676.Bacon was so furious when the army took back control that he burned the place down.

But suddenly Bacon got very sick and died.18
