It was my pleasure to serve USGBC-Missouri Gateway as Board Chair for 2012, and I am thrilled with what we accomplished together!

Our Chapter continues to achieve a great deal every year, from the national to the local level, and 2012 was no exception. We turned 11 years old in 2012 and have grown into a strong, respected, and well-governed community organization. We have an ambitious mission, and the passionate members to make it happen! We should all be proud that the USGBC Missouri Gateway Chapter is an organization that others want to support and help us achieve that mission.

Last year we were recognized as one of only 9 of the 77 USGBC chapters across the country to meet all compliance standards set by the national USGBC. This is important because it is part of what keeps us robust and resilient. And this helped us attract outside industry professionals to join the board as Advisors for the first time in the Chapter’s history. This is a vote of confidence from the community that we are a worthy and valuable investment of their time, expertise, and resources.

On the green building front, we finished up the LEED Community Pilot Project that began at the end of 2011, assisting with LEED certification efforts for the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Commerce Bank Center for Science Education, where the Chapter is headquartered. This was a dedicated effort by over 20 volunteers from the Chapter, funded by a generous grant from Wells Fargo Advisors. We earned LEED Silver certification for the building, and have plans to keep this community program going by working with additional non-profits to achieve LEED certification for their buildings.

Continuing to bring more communities into the Chapter, we formalized the Mid-Missouri Branch serving Columbia and Jefferson City. This builds on our continuing work with the Ozarks Branch in Springfield, MO. We now serve all except 18 of the 115 counties in Missouri, plus 13 counties in Illinois.

In 2012, our partnership with the St. Louis Regional Chamber launched the St. Louis Regional High Performance Building Initiative. We recruited 19 signatory organizations to support the Initiative’s aims to increase the square footage of third-party verified green buildings in the region by 50% by 2014. This project was funded by an Impact Grant from the national USGBC. Stay tuned for updates in the coming years as we move towards our goal.

And our Green Schools program continues to gain momentum. Again, driven by passionate and talented volunteers, we are providing healthier and more productive environments for learning. In 2012 we partnered with the St. Louis Zoo, the Missouri Botanical Garden and Webster University to host a multi-day Sustainability Institute for pre-Kindergarten through 12 grade teachers. In 2013, we’ll do the same on top of launching a brand new program, the Green Schools Quest, a project-based challenge for K-12 schools in our territory.

There are so many more things to celebrate, but only so much space on the page. It has been an honor to work alongside such a dedicated group toward the important goal of making every building a green building!

MAKING EVERY BUILDING A GREEN BUILDING - THROUGH EDUCATION AND OUTREACHThis is the core of the our work, where we address our mission, working to ensure that green building is accessible to all through education, outreach, collaborations and partnerships. From monthly evening programs to collaborative education sessions and volunteer speakers bureau presentations, we aim to provide education for building professionals while also providing useful and timely green building information for the broader community.

EDUCATIONWe continue to tap local, regional and national expertise to provide top notch educational opportunities at monthly evening programs, green building tours, in-depth sessions, LEED Exam Prep Courses and Lunch n’ LEED webinar series. As a USGBC Authorized Education Delivery Partner and an AIA/CES Approved Provider, we strive to offer a multitude of opportunities for professionals to earn continuing education to maintain their LEED Professional credentials. In 2012, we delivered over 45 educational programs reaching nearly 2,000 individuals. Highlights include:

• Collaboratively developing educational sessions with St. Louis Community College delivered by Chapter members.

• First Annual Do-It-Yourself Sustainability featuring six Pecha Kucha style presentations and presented in partnership with St. Louis Earth Day and St. Louis Green.

• Expanding our audiences with a monthly program on faith-based sustainability that led to a hands-on ENERGY STAR for Congregations workshop.

• Hosting nationally known speakers such as Doug Farr speaking on LEED for Neighborhood Development and Kim Shinn on Energy Modeling.

• Diversifying our partnership efforts through collaboration with Webster University, St. Louis Zoo and Missouri Botanical Garden on a 3-day Sustainability Institute attended by over 70 pre-kindergarten through 12 grade educators.

The USGBC has been a formidable steward of the sustainability movement for many years. And its efforts have been largely realized by the tireless work of its local chapters and membership community. Understanding that cultural shifts in how we think about the environment are marked by gradual achievements, the Missouri Gateway Chapter offers educational seminars and training programs that increase awareness, and provide tangible examples of how incremental change can provide immense results. Through these efforts and by engaging our professional community to share experiences, the Missouri Gateway Chapter provides the traction for where the ‘recycled’ rubber meets the road.

OUTREACH AND ADVOCACYThrough our outreach and advocacy efforts, we strive to connect people with green building experts and successes. Connecting community groups and professional organizations with our volunteer Speakers Bureau, linking an organization in need with university students seeking experience through our Sustainable Project Assistance, matching Emerging Professionals with experienced professionals with our Green Shadow program – we are bringing people together around green building to build a greener community!

Every year we are honored to recognize those in our community that are transforming the built environment through the annual Growing Green Awards. We also love to recognize projects in their successful pursuit of certification through the LEED Green Building Rating System. In 2012, the Chapter awarded LEED Plaques to Staples Promotional Products in St. Louis and Boone Hospital Center Patient Tower in Columbia, MO. Additional highlights from 2012 include:

• Completed LEED Community Project with assistance from 25 Chapter volunteers, who gained experience on a LEED project and earned continuing education. Though the project began in October 2011 as an education and outreach program, 2012 marked the performance period, LEED submittal and LEED EB: O&M Silver certification of the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Commerce Bank Center for Science Education. We plan to repeat this program with another non-profit in 2013.

• Advanced Speakers Bureau efforts by providing training for the 27 green business leaders that participate as volunteers. Presentations in 2012 included Sustainable Building for Affordable Housing Development in partnership with the St. Louis Regional Housing & Community Development Agency and Green Building Design & Marketing with the local Society for Marketing Professional Services chapter.

• Launched the High Performance Building Initiative in partnership with the St. Louis Regional Chamber with a goal of increasing the square footage of third-party verified green buildings in the St. Louis region by 50% by 2014. 19 built environment stakeholders signed on as signatories, agreeing to promote the goals through their educational efforts.

• Expanded local government outreach with a Local Government Green Team Meet up at the annual Green Homes & Great Health Festival to share best practices and adopted the Regional Environmental Internship Program. In 2012, two full-time interns worked with two separate municipalities to develop a Greenhouse Gas Inventories. In 2013, they will develop Climate Action Plans, giving the municipalities a baseline with which to measure efficiency improvements.

• Awarded three scholarships to the 2012 Greening the Heartland regional green building conference and raised enough funds at our annual ECORIDE bicycle event to send two individuals to 2013 Greening the Heartland and provide support to three individuals pursuing the LEED Green Associate credential.

Participating in the Speakers Bureau has been a terrific experience for me. I have shared knowledge about green building with a wide range of audiences, from second grade gifted students to civil engineers. I strengthen my presentation skills, which helps me personally. And, as I continually learn about green practices, I am a part of advancing sustainability in the St. Louis area and across the U.S. in my professional role as an environmental stewardship analyst with a nationwide healthcare system.

MAKING AN IMPACTIn 2012, USGBC-Missouri Gateway volunteers contributed 3,500 hours of their time to advance green building through education and outreach. We were founded by 15 volunteers with a passion for green building, and volunteers are still key to accomplishing the important work of making green building accessible and available to all. Whether it’s through committee participation, planning an educational event, staffing our booth at a festival or trade show, delivering a presentation on behalf of our Speakers Bureau or rolling up their sleeves on the LEED Community Pilot Project, our volunteers make a difference!

The USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter is the connective muscle that moves the St. Louis High Performance Building Initiative. Because of the Chapter, this Initiative is a successful collaboration that will advance regional prosperity and St. Louis’ prominence as a green region.

Eric Schneider, LEED Green AssociateSenior Director – Public Policy, St. Louis Regional Chamber

Thanks to the generosity of USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter’s scholarship program, I had the pleasure of attending Greening the Heartland 2012 Indianapolis. It was an experience I won’t soon forget. My days were filled with conversations and sessions with some of the brightest minds in sustainability – people that care deeply about the future of our world and the lives of people all around it, humble Joplin, Missouri included. The outstanding examples of sustainability, along with the relationships formed along the way, have implications far beyond the conference for renewing of the city of Joplin as we strive to cultivate a community renowned not only for its Midwestern wherewithal but also its bold march toward sustainability.
