Goals• Stimulate our thinking about ways we might use technology

to effectively and efficiently enhance professional development, performance support, dissemination, technical assistance, collaboration, and strategic communication activities.

• Ask key questions to determine which applications to use for specific audiences;

• Decide which applications to consider using for specific purposes;

• Know how and where to search for information related to using new applications; and

• Plan how to learn the use of new applications.

Context is not important.

Context is everything.

What is technology?

…anything invented after you were born. – Alan Kay

…anything that doesn’t work yet. – Danny Hillis

…anything useful invented by a mind. – Kevin Kelly

Technology is changing everything about how we build

relationships, communicate, and learn

More Capacity Modular

Cheaper Easier

How are we able to do it?

Page 11: Using Technology to Engance PD, TA, and Dissemination in Early Care and Education

Key Points

■ Think in threes and focus on performance■ You don’t need to use everything: use what you

need ■ Function, then form■ Build your digital literacy■ Modularity■ Welcome opportunities to make mistakes■ Create a Plan: you will NOT find the time; you need

to MAKE it

Page 12: Using Technology to Engance PD, TA, and Dissemination in Early Care and Education

12

Threes

Before Now After

Always think in terms of threes: what is happening, what comes before it, what

happens next

REAL Performance Support RequiresTrue Blended Learning

14

Five moments of need1. when learning for the first time2. when learning more3. when remembering and/or applying what's been

learned4. when things go wrong, and5. when things change.

How much digital stuff are we producing?

16

■ If every image made and every word written from the earliest moments of civilization to the year 2003 were converted to digital information, the total would come to five exabytes.

■ An exabyte is one quintillion bytes, one billion gigabytes…a one with eighteen zeros following it

■ That means: 5,000,000,000,000,000,000■ From 2003 to 2010: we created five exabytes of digital

information every two days■ By 2013 we will be creating five exabytes every ten minutes■ The total of 912 exabytes for 1020 is the equivalent of 18 times

the amount of information contained in all the books ever written.

But something was missing…

CurrentSituation

Hundreds of providers never before used a particular assessment instrument

DesiredOutcome

Providers would use the instrument with fidelity and report data

Our Goal

Increase the chances that the providers would succeed

What was missing?

• A reminder of the components of the tool that provided it:– Just enough– Just-in-time
