A Visit to the Towns Public MarketBy: Paul Nichol De Vera

The alarm clock rang at around four in the morning without hesitation I got up and

refreshed a little. I rushed down the stairs and out to the door anxious to leave the house as quick

as possible. The cold morning breeze greeted me with joy. I started walking to the direction of

the lights shining in the distant horizon. I walked pass Tatang Didos house, the lights were on

and I can see him peaking through the window from his room. I smiled and waved at him and he

smiled in return. As I neared my destination and the bright lights making a blur of my sight, as I

waited for my eyes to adjust. Upon attaining a clear vision I saw the public market. I saw

vendors, each wearing different colors of apron standing waiting patiently for their products to

    arrive.

First to arrive were three elf trucks carrying baskets of fruits and vegetables coming from

the neighboring towns. The kargadors of the vendors brought their fruits and vegetables to

their respective stalls and got their tips from the owners ranging from twenty pesos to fifty pesos

per basket. From apples to mangoes the market was filled with fruits of different varieties.

Vegetables of different sizes filled the first ten stalls in the market.

As the trucks cleared from the bagsakan area I waited patiently. After a couple of

minutes the trucks carrying different kinds of sea foods arrived. The vendors started rushing to

these trucks fighting over the different kinds of fish like ants rushing over to the grain of sugar.

They started carrying these coolers and brought them back to their stall. I can smell the ocean

from this products being put down by the truck drivers.

Three elf trucks arrived from the slaughter house and delivered tons of meat. Blood

dripped from the back of truck. The sight of these animals being slaughtered appeared right in

front of me. The ray of sunlight hit my eye and I was back to reality. I enjoyed watching these

products be delivered now its time to buy some of them. I made my way through the office of

the market administrator and into the meat stalls. After a couple of minutes buying all the meat

we needed I moved to the vegetable section and observed an old lady who is probably in her late

sixties, she was two puso ng saging and I thought of what she would cook. I then bought

eggplants, balsam apples and some beans. I then remembered the pinakbet that tita used to make.

I went to the fish stall of manong Jeremy; he has the finest sea food in the market. I

bought milkfish, some mussels and a kilo of prawns. He also sells dried sea foods ranging from

dried pusit, karing and many more. I thanked him and went on my way. I passed by the front

of the market which is now filled with vendors selling puto, suman, and tupig. I bought

some for my nephew and niece who will be staying with us for the summer vacation. The sun is

already high up in the sky, I headed home with a smile on my face and some products in my

hands all of it came from the towns public market.

A Day at the FarmBy: Paul Nichol De Vera

The sound of the chickens woke me up that morning, I decided to go for a walk I came

across a man who was carrying three empty pots. I assisted the old man who led me to a narrow

pathway. As we reached the end of the pathway an open plain revealed itself with great joy and

pride. The only sound that can be heard was the sound of the leaves of the mango trees swaying

with the wind back and forth. I followed the old man into a small hut in the middle of the plain

and a little girl assisted me and got the pot. I asked them if I could stay for a little while and they

said you can stay here as long as you want. They called the old man as Tatang Susing he was

the eldest among them all. He showed me around and brought me to this pond. The water was so

clear that even the slightest detail of the terrain under it can be seen; we filled the pots with water

and brought them back to the hut.

He introduced me to his wife they called her Cha Evilla. She asked me to gather

vegetables beside the hut and I did so with joy. After a few minutes gathering them I gave them

to Cha Evilla and she washed them and started chopping. I went out of the hut and into the

plain I watched the children throw their slippers with great precision and accuracy as they try to

hit the can in the game called tumbang preso. Tatang Susing approached me and introduced

me to some of his friends. One of them was Tatang Domeng he told me that one time he was

farming he accidentally dug up a 1943 grenade that almost took his life. He was interrupted by

Cha Evilla as she called us for lunch.

They served fresh fruits and vegetables coming from the farm itself. They cooked

Buridibog, a recipe with the vegetables malunggay, patani, kamatis, ampalaya, and

kalabasa these are just a few among the many vegetables that they include in this delicious

recipe. Rice will never be gone in this small gathering for it is the main attraction to this feast. They include coffee, water, and even tuba as their source of refreshments all of this is put inside

a pot where the pot will maintain the cold temperature of the drinks. Plates were not needed for

the banana leaves did just fine. We sat and ate all together, we laughed and shared stories.

The sun began to descend from the highest point, I knew now that the day is ending

slowly. Tatang Susing brought out his guitar and started to play music he sang as his friend

  • 7/28/2019 Venture, A Compilation.pdf

    6/39

Tatang Domeng tapped the wooden floor like a percussion instrument. After an hour or so they

began to plow the land while Cha Evilla started to sort the seeds into small bamboo containers

ready for planting. I sat under the mango tree and thought that these people were very lucky to

have a place like this, peaceful, unpolluted and most of all relaxing. As I thought of these things I

saw a kite flying nearby; Tatang Domeng watering the plowed lands; Tatang Susing plants the

seeds and Cha Evilla sitting there by her rocking chair surrounded by children. Judging by the

gestures of her hand and the movement of her mouth she was telling a story.

Across the vast plain I can see the grass swaying with the wind like an ocean that has

color green as its main color. I thanked them for that wonderful day and bid my goodbye to my

new friends they gave me a basket filled with fruits and vegetables to bring home. I enjoyed my

day at the farm. As the sun sets into the horizon I walked away heading for the narrow path and

this time carrying a basket filled with fruits and a mind filled with experience that I cant wait to

share to some of my friends back home.

Unchained MelodyBy: Paul Nichol R. De Vera

Its a world of love and understanding. Peace is eminent to this place. A beautiful land

filled with blooming flowers; birds flying high in the sky; fresh air surrounding the distant

horizon. Paradise as some will call it. It is the dream weve all been Hey Janrey its time to

wake up now or youll be late for school. An old woman shouted just outside the door. Janrey

awoke to a place he calls reality. For him it is a place of sorrow and sadness. Teasing here and

there everywhere he goes he is teased by the people around him. He was given the title stutter

boy in school. If it was up to him he will no longer go to school, but there is one little detail that

gives him the strength and happiness. The presence of a girl named Nicolette. She possesses the

    beauty of a Goddess.

The honking of the bus indicated that it was time to leave for school bidding goodbye to

his mom with a kiss on the cheeks he ran outside the door and unto the bus. No one accepted him

for who he was. He caught sight of an empty seat beside Joseph he asked is is this se-se-seat

taken? Joseph immediately placed his bag beside him and said yes stutter boy its taken. He

kept moving to the back of the bus and saw Teddy he asked again is-is-is this se-se-seat taken?

Teddy removed his bag and allowed Janrey to sit. Hating the awkward moment of silence Teddy

started a conversation. How are you feeling today Janrey? Joseph asked, I-I-Im fine Jo-Jo-

Joseph. How a-a-about y-y-you?Janrey replied. Well Im fine too, have you done your

homework? Joseph spoke nervously trying to maintain a good flow of the conversation; he tried

to bepatient also waiting for the polite reply of Janrey. Ye-yes I di-did Janrey answered. Wo-

wo-would yo-you li-like me to he-help yo-you? Why no thank you Janrey I am already done

thanks though. Do-dont me-mention it m-my old fri-friend. Joseph smiled in return.

A new friendship was born in the school bus. He finally found someone who will accept

him as a friend regardless of his disability. They entered the school together; had lunch at the

cafeteria together; and enjoyed their free time together. In the blink of an eye Janreys life started

to change when he caught sight of the girl that possesses a goddess beauty. He-hey Jo-Joseph,

wh-wh-who i-is tha-that gi-girl? he asked while anxiously pointing at Nicolette. Why Janrey

thats Nicolette my girlfriend.Joseph answered softly. Re-really? he answered disappointedly.

    16/39

Im just messing with you Joseph blurted out with the sight of his friends sadness. You like

her right? Joseph added. n-no I-I do-dont li-like he-her He replied with a smile on his face.

    So you do like her huh? Joseph interrupted. I-I-told yo-you th-that I-I-dont li-like he-her

with an irritated look he walked out and went towards the cafeteria.

Janrey and Joseph fell in line for their food along with the other students. "Hey stutter

boy!" shouted the other guys with taunting tones. Janrey looked down, closed his eyes, and took

a deep breath. He did that every time the scorning was too much for him to take. Joseph felt

sorry for him. He then said to the people who teased Janrey. "Quit picking on Janrey! What has

he ever done to you?!" The people around started to shout FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! but

Janrey and Joseph just walked away and turned their backs. On the way out a cupcake flew to the

head of Janrey and someone shouted Direct hit with all the humiliation he ran outside and into

the rooftop of the school and started crying. He was all alone crying when he heard footsteps

    coming from the stairs.

He heard a soft and lovely voice saying are you alright Janrey? he raised his head and

caught sight of Nicolette. He answered ye-ye-yes Im o-o-okay she sat beside him and brought

out a handkerchief and started wiping the icing of the cupcake of his hair and his face. Stop

    crying little boy she said. Ho-how ca-can I sto-stop cry-crying if-if I kno-know tha-that I-I-I

    wo-wont be ac-accep-ted in thi-this scho-school? No-no one wi-will ev-ever ac-accept who I-I

am? She hugged him and whispered I accept you for who you are because you are not

ashamed of who you really are. Their conversation was interrupted by the bell as it rang for the

first period in the afternoon. I have to go already Ill be late for class, see you around Janrey

Nicolette smiled then walked down the stairs. Janrey stood up started to go down the stairs, down

the hallway and into the classroom. At five-oclock the bell rang children were dismissed,

everyone ran towards the bus except for Janrey he started walking towards home. The bus passed

by him people shouted hey stutter boy he just stood and clenched his fist and tried to imagine

that he is in a place where there are no worries. As the bus passed he started walking again.

Someone was calling him Hey Janrey wait for me he told himself I recognize this voice it was

the same soft voice he heard this morning when he was weeping. It was Nicolette trying to catch

up with him. Janrey started to walk towards her and met her halfway. W -why di-did y-you c-

call me? Are you going to walk? she asked. Y-y-yes I w-will he answered politely. Be

careful now okay? I-I w-will d-dont w-worry a-about m-me. They bid goodbye to each other.

Janrey passed by a bookstore on the way home. He caught attention of one book displayed at the

window entitled How to Say what you Feel by Robert Brown without hesitation he bought the

book. Eager to read it he did not greet his parents upon arriving home. He opened the book and

    started reading.

Hours passed and still, he never rested and just kept on reading. It was already half past

10 when he realized that he can apply all these things he just learned and he will start tomorrow.

The next morning in school he met up with Joseph and narrated what he has been doing during

that night and they both decided to meet up at dismissal and apply the lessons learned. Josephs

house is just across the street; they met in the backyard and started practicing. Try saying hi to

me. Joseph said. H-h-hi J-Joseph he replied willingly. You can do it Janrey just try a little bit

harder. Joseph saidimpatiently. Well if youre not pressuring me and giving me those look

maybe Ill be able to say it completely now, wouldnt I? Janrey shouted to the top of his voice.

Hey, you did it. D-did I-I j-just d-do th-that? Janrey replied nervously Oh yes you just did.

Joseph replied happily. LookJanrey why dont we stop and continue it tomorrow huh? You

look tired, goodbye my old friend. Janrey left and started walking; while walking he was

internalizing what just happened. His face showing deep thoughts, realizing that this was an

important event in his life. He was brought back to reality when he saw the bullies playing at the

distance. He decided to walk around them but in blink of an eye a ping pong ball flew straight to

his face. Then the words he feared the most were uttered out in the distance Hey stutter boy.

He just stood and clenched his fist and looked away. Hey why the sad face are you scared?

with all his anger he shouted. What is wrong with you people why cant you just leave me alone

so that I can go on with my life! The bullies were shocked and they decided to leave him alone.

He started walking again but this time with a small grin on his face.

He arrived home and started reading the book again for hours he just sat there in the

balcony reading and reading. He came across a chapter telling him that if you cant say it

personally a letter would do. He ran inside the study and got a pen and paper and started

    composing the letter.

    Nicolette,

I want to thank you for before. I wanted to say that I have been admiring you for the

    last few days

    18/39

He created many drafts but still something was missing. He thought of what he really felt and

    started writing.

    Nicolette,

Maybe its time that I tell you what I truly feel. I have been keeping for so long but I

just cant help it anymore. So here goes I like you, you possess the true beauty of a Goddess,

you always make me smile if I see you smile and feel happy because your simple smile can

make me happy. I hope that after you read this you will still talk to me. See you around.

    -Janrey

He showed the letter to Joseph and he said yes go ahead and give it to her. M-maybe

    l-later pl-please d-do r-remind m-me th-that i-its h-here in m-my b-bag. Sure I will now lets

go to class. They were about to leave school when they saw Nicolette walking alone towards

them. Hey give her the letter now its now or never. Joseph said excitingly. Where is it? I just

placed it here in my bag where is it?! Janrey replied nervously. Well here she is just tell her

    personally then.

Hey Nicolette can I talk to you for a minute please Janrey said nervously. Youre not

stu.. Janrey placed his finger on her lips and continued. Remember when we talked up there

on the rooftop? The words that you said made me feel important and accepted, because of you

my life became easier and you changed me into who I am now, Im so grateful to have you there

and comfort me. Janrey you are my friend you know that what friends are for? Nicolette

replied with a smile. I just want to add that I like you and you made me feel important I hope

that even though you know the true feelings I have for you, you would still treat me as a friend

and not ignore me like the others. I-I-I before Janrey could even finish Nicolette hugged him

and whispered I love you too Janrey. Out in the distance Joseph smiled happily and brought out

the letter and said. Maybe you never really needed the letter after all, all you need is right in

front of you. He crumpled the letter and threw it. Nicolette and Janrey walked holding each

    other tightly towards the horizon.

    Dance of a Million Trees

    by: Paul Nichol De Vera

    The wind blowing hard,

    The sky becomes dark,

The trees sway in the deep sun set

To cope with sorrows of heartfelt.

Sway along the cold, cold wind.

Bend like all the million daffodils,

Accept ones gesture as a loveDedication to birds sweet flight above.

Left and right away we go.

Leaves flying in a single bow,

    Whirring sound the wind makes.

Leaves break free from the trees grace.

The trees comes to a halt,

Swaying diminishes from the far end.

Gestures that are wild and free.

Ends the dance of a million trees.

    Garden of Forever

    By: Paul Nichol De Vera

    Walks and smiles are flowers.

    Memories in every gesture showers,

    The simple smile can plant

    A beautiful flower so grand.

The wind blows and gives chance.

For daffodils to sway in a chant.

    Millions of tulips grow,

And create a garden without sorrow.

    Infinite worlds they create,

    Dances from a flowers grace.

    Love in everything you see,

Dances of flowers in front of me.

For every time I thought of you,

    I wish I had a flower.

Then I would walk the cobblestone path,

    Of my garden of forever.

    Lady of Truth

    by: Paul Nichol De Vera

The lady cried for she cannot stand

Seeing the truth shrouded by gold

It was right at the palm of her handBut she let go of its tight hold

The sword she had was already useless

The cloak she wore was torn to piecesShe fell on top of a great archipelago

She covered her eyes with her own shadow

She began to wail for she was weakFor gold became her dawning defeat

One, small spark inside her chest

Kept her believing of Justices true test

She tried and gained her strength

    She stood to gain respect

For she will not be takenAway from the truths sweet laden

She raised her sword and beamShe gained composure from within

She vowed to shield ones doubt

Replace it will truth all around

She kept the laws close by

Guiding her from her blindfolded eye

Her scale powerful to weigh and seeThat Justice will stand with its unbridled beam

The Story of Regretby: Paul Nichol R. De Vera

Friends become the people or the kind of people you fall in love with. They are thepeople we see almost everyday. We grow closer with them; share stories with them; and do

stupid things with them. They are our golden treasures. The story you are about to read is not astory of joy rather a mixture of feelings, but then again who knows what you might feel. Thestory you are about to read contains the proof of ones move can lead to your own downfall. The

most destructive force in the universe, REGRET. Read ahead and let all the feels flow.

Our story begins with a brand new day. I met her during the start of the school yearthrough a friend. We grew closer to each other and created a friendship, I hope that would last

forever. I have been assigned a great responsibility, being part of the student government, which

gave a great effect into everything I do. The responsibility required me to handle a specific class.

We were required to attest their situations everyday during the morning before the first bell andlunch time. From time to time we would shuffle and be assigned to another class. That day came

and I was assigned to her class. For me to do my responsibility well I work with the elected classofficers so I asked them. She stood and stated that she was the class president. I smiled in returnthen I noticed a little detail. Her eyes sparkled as she talked to me. She is beautiful is told

myself. The sparkling eyes; that cute and unique smile; and that beautiful long hair. Alice is her

name.Everyday I get to see her and talk to her. She is my friend, a great friend. Great friends

give you that awesome feeling of being important. She made me feel that way and I hope I did

send out the same beacon to her. From time to time wed work together in meetings a nd school

wide stuff. One afternoon she sat opposite of me. As she read the book I caught myself staring ather. Admiring her beauty from the distance. Her long hair hid her sparkling eyes. I just stared at

her. She looked at me and I immediately looked away. From time to time I steal glances

whenever I get the chance. The work we were doing was finished. The sun was descending andwe decided to call it a day. We walked side by side as we exited the school and headed for our

destination. The food court in our University where her mom was waiting. I bid my good bye

and headed home. I said good bye with hopes that we see each other again soon. As I walked

down Session road. I asked myself, do I like her? Am I in love with her? These thoughts justgave me headaches so I ignored them.

Upon arriving home I went straight to my room and sat there staring at the wall. It seems

that ignoring these feelings would just result to despair. I decided to face them tomorrow I willtell her and tomorrow she will find out about the truth. My mom called me for dinner. Dinner

was my favorite fish fillet and calamares, two of my moms specialty. Over dinner we had a

weird conversation. I found out that my mom spent the entire morning with Alices mom.

According to Alices mom whenever she and Alice would have a conversation I would, at onetime be the object of discussion. My mom concluded that someone is either admiring me or

someone was just influenced by my leadership skills. After dinner I pondered on my thoughts. I

sat by my bed and weighed my feelings. Is this infatuation? Is this love? Tomorrow will be thelast time that I will see her. Its a three-day weekend this week. A free day on Monday therefore

I wouldnt see her for the next few days. Tomorrow Im going to ask her and tomorrow I would

    know.

The next morning I reported in their classroom as always since I was assigned. I waited

for her, unfortunately she was late. My time was up, time to go for class. As I ascended the stairs

on my way to our classroom I saw her. She greeted good morning and I offered back a warmsmile. During our first class it seems that I was anxious enough to know the truth and yes I am.

By lunch time I would have a chance to speak with her and tell her. I can do this, I know I can

the truth is better than the lie. I anxiously waited for lunch time. It finally came, what has beenhours of waiting felt like years of being bored. I descended the stairs to her classroom. I enteredchecked their attendance and as I was suppose to talk to her I received a text message.

    Which read?

POD: Meeting at the library now see you there.

I read the message from our superior. I cant do anything about it I need to attend. So Ibid my good bye to my class. Despair filled my afternoon. Classes were dismissed I searched the

sea of people for her. She needs to know now but I was very unlucky. I went home to change in

my casual attire and to get a few things because we would go down to the province. As I rode thebus I always get the window seat. I put on my earphones and stared out the window and started

to think. Am I really ready? Am I strong enough? It seems Im afraid to answer these questions

    then I dozed off.

I awoke to the vibration coming from my phone. I still have 30 minutes travel time beforereaching my destination it was already dark. The text message was from her.

Alice: hey poMe: hey too, how are you?

Alice: Im fine. wacha do po?

Me: just sitting Im traveling now.

Alice: take care po always okay?Me: I will

Alice: so hows your love life po?

Me: love life? I dont have any haha you?Alice: crush I have haha

Me: and who is that lucky guy? Haha

    Alice: secret po hahaha

I was ready to send my reply but my battery died. I called it a day and decided that I

would text her the next morning.

    The Phone Call

She texted me that she was alone. She was feeling sick that time so I decided to call her.She picked up the phone and we talked. We talked for hours about random things. Then I had to

go for an errand. So we changed our means of conversation to text messages.

Alice: so whats up po? haha

    Me: none much haha you?

Alice: eh same old same old. Me: how are you feeling na? xp

Alice: Im feeling fine na po a little

    Me: Thats good to hear.

Alice: Oh yah I know someone who has a crush on you? Me: who? tell me please?

    Alice: you know her haha

Me: who nga?Alice: guess who hahaMe: Kyra? Nicole? Desiree? or maybe its YOU haha

Alice: haha you mentioned na po?

Me: who nga?Alice: guess again po

Me: YOU thats my final guess.

    Alice: maybe po

Me: who na kasiAlice: its me nga po haha

    Me: oooohhhh

Alice: I hope well still be friends po Me: of course naman

Our conversation ended and I never received a text message from her again. Mondaymorning I entered their class and she displayed an embarrassed look but still her eyes were

sparkling. It was the end of November and a few days from now would be the annual Christmas

    party.

    December 10

An unforgettable morning it was. We started off with a few games. I received a textmessage coming from her and I fell back to my chair because I didnt know what to reply. I

decided to let her go slowly. I couldnt move my hands I just sat there and said nothing. My

friends approached me and asked whats wrong but I shooed them away. I went down to theirclass to give my exchange gift to the person I picked. As I descended the stairs my heart was

beating fast. I couldnt face her. We finally met and we said nothing. I started to ignore her and

forget what weve had before. I shut her out of my life by breaking all means of communication.

It was an entirely unethical thing to do but it hid what I really felt, shame.

I went home early for I no longer felt well. I received a lot of gifts but one gift stood out

the most among them. The book that Alice gave me.

Sometimes we do things that we REGRET. Up to now I still think of what might havehappened if I only said those 4 words, I love you too. I read from a book entitled Flipped and one

quote from the story says, We cannot dwell on what might have been. All of us have done

something in life that we regretted. I, myself have done that mistake. It has been a year and ahalf. She is already happy and we remained close friends but from time to time I would wonder.

    What might have been.

The Story of the PastBy: Paul Nichol De Vera

The past is something that we have to forget and let go. The hardest part however; is

deciding either to forget and erase or keep and remember. The past slowly destroys us inside andwith all the wonders it may bring it also brings despair. With each passing moment that we dwellin the past we are blinded from what is right in front of us. We disregard what we already have.

The only way to forget is to accept. The story is all about how the best of friends become and fallto just being friends.

I fell in love with Mikaela when she showed me that there is more to friendship than just

being friends. Love filled the air with magic and love became the only light that filled my day. It

was a brand new year and the start became a great one. She has this ability to make every day an

extraordinary one and with each passing moment we grow closer to each other. We had coffeeone day I had my usual she ordered her favorite flavor. We walked around side by side knowing

more about each other. We saw common friends along the way and a simple hi and hello woulddo. This was a moment where we ignore whats around us and focus on what was happening. There are times that I wish that these moments would never end but then they always come to an

end. She knows that I love her and when she found out we grew closer to each other. We became

best of friends. For months we built this strong bond of friendship and as moments passed we grew

closer to each other. I was travelling when she sent a message. The message goes

Mikaela: Can I ask a favor from you?Me: Sure, what is it?

Mikaela: I want you to help me on Monday.

Me: About what exactly?Mikaela: Ill tell you on Monday

    Me: sure until Monday then

Mikaela: Thank you po, you are so caring.

Me: I am always caring especially to the people I love Mikaela: aww iloveyoutoo po

Upon reading her message my heart pounded. Is she giving out a sign? Does she reallymean it? These thoughts entered my mind and honestly I didnt know what to say next. I did not

believe at first but time will tell.

Valentines Day was no normal day for me. I received a cupcake from a friend. It was asweet cup cake with a heart drawn on top. It was placed in a box with a red ribbon. I gave my

friend a balloon as a sign of thanks. I gave Mikaela a rose and poem. The rose very much

explains her personality. She is someone whom you can love for the rest of your life.

    February 18, 2012

February 18 was a night that left a mark. It was the night of the annual serenade ball.

Festivities started with a few performances from chosen people and smiles filled our faces. Fromtime to time I would glance at her table and see her. She is so beautiful with that yellow dress.

My heart pounded as the dance floor was slowly opened. Tonight she will be my first dance. Thesong started. I stood up and approached her. I gave out my hand and said may I have thisdance? she gave her hand and we headed for the dance floor. We danced through two songs and

the first dance was filled with smiles. What I thought would never happen finally happened. Joy

filled my heart. We decided to stop and we walked towards her table before she sat down shehugged me and whispered thank you. Anxiety left, being someones first dance in their entire

high school life is a memory to be remembered. Every time I get the chance to dance with her

friends they would always swap with me so that I could get another chance to dance with her.

The night was filled with dances and every dance is special but nothing will ever compare withthe first dance. Joy filled our night.

The night was still young but it was time to finally call it a night. She stood there beside

John and I saw her smile and yes she is still beautiful. We said good bye. From the ball, I and myfamily travelled that night. We had sent each other messages until it was midnight.

Me: Thank you for the dance I enjoyed it.

Mikaela: I enjoyed it too take care and have a rest tonight Me: you too good night, I love you

Mikaela: good night sleep tight and sweet dreams, iloveyoutoo

The weekend was filled with memories as each dance sank in and made everything special. Inever heard from Mikaela and I gave her space to rest. A great week it was.

    Monday

I arrived in school with a smile and hoping that this day would be great. I entered the

room and the first thing that I would hear from someone was these statements. Did you kno wthat Mikaela and John are together? I was shocked when I heard about it, but I didnt believe it

at first. I kept telling myself I should hear it from her. I ignored the rumor, hoping that it is a

rumor. During the break time I texted her.

Me: I want to talk to you please?

Mikaela: sure po, later at break time.

Break time arrived and I approached her she smiled but I didnt smile back. Her smile faded as I

approached, before she could say anything else I asked face to face. Is it true? My heart pounded.

With every passing moment my heart is breaking and then what I feared had come true she saidyes. I walked away without another word. That night she sent me a message...

    Mikaela: hey

  • 7/28/2019 Venture, A Compilation.pdf

    31/39

I didnt reply because I dont want to feel what I felt earlier.

    Mikaela: please reply?

I decided that if she really wants to talk to me she should do it in person.

Mikaela: Im sorryMe: Sorry? All you can say is sorry?

Mikaela: I didnt want to hurt you po?

Me: hurt me? What you did hurt me more. Not telling the truth.Mikaela: Im sorry

Me: I thought we were best friends; best friends dont keep secrets from each other.

She no longer replied. The following day every time I would see her Id pretend that I never sawher. It may be hard but its the only way to keep me from the pain. My heart seemed full before

knowing the truth but all of it was thrown away when I found out. A broken heart is like a

broken vase, it could be fixed but the marks remain. Only time would heal a wounded heart andit did. Months past and we became friends once again but still the memory remains. The year is

halfway over and I got the chance to ask her one thing.

Me: heyMikaela: how are you na po?

Me: Im fine you? Can I ask something?

Mikaela: Im fine po anything poMe: Did you ever feel the same way as before?

    Mikaela: yes po

    Me: Then why?

Mikaela: love doesnt need to be always perfect; it only needs to be true.

She and John are happy together and yes I was grateful for meeting her because she taught me

    how to be someone else.

The past is just merely a piece of the puzzle and with every piece in place a great pictureis formed. The past is responsible for who we are now. We are that great picture. The picture of

how we dealt with every situation as we grow into a new person. To forget is destined but to

keep and remember is more of a choice.

Story of the Truthby: Paul Nichol De Vera

When was the last time you told the truth? Did it help you? Sometimes the truth can be

the most painful word in our lives. Sometimes it can also be the greatest. Beyond the truth isanother feeling. A feeling so powerful it touches an individual and changes their lives forever. No one really knows the real value of the truth but we discover it along the way.

The beeping of the alarm clock woke him up. Its already 6:30 and for the first time hewas going to be late for the first day of school.

He got up, went to the bathroom and took a

bath. His name is Steve. He is in college. He just

started his first day of a new chapter in life. Heopened his closet and got his favorite polo. It had

blue and purple stripes. He wore it along with

his favorite leather shoes. He descended the stairsand went into the kitchen. A plate of pancakes with

bacon was waiting for him. He found a note on

    the table saying.

His little sister joined him. Stephanie is

a second year High School student and was turning 14 in October. Wheres mom? She asked.

Steve gave the note as an answer. Oh which reminds me, you owe me. She gave him abullying look. Steve gave her allowance and started to eat. As they were chatting and exchanging

stories about their dreams Steves phone buzzed. Oh! We are going to be late Stephanie get

ready. They both ate in a rush. They stepped out of the door. The great windy morning

embraced them with delight. Why are you wearing that polo dear? Stephanie asked. Stevelooked at her and said Its the first day of school and I want to make an impression. Stephanie

smiled and they went on their way.

Steve dropped Stephanie at their school. She kissed her brother good bye and entered her

class. Steve on the other hand arrived at his first class just as the first bell started. The first class

he attended was English Literature. It happens to be his favorite subject. As he entered the roomhis eyes roamed around and started to look for someone familiar to him. He took his seat at the

back of the classroom. Not knowing anyone he surrendered into his own world. A tall man

wearing a leather hide coat entered the classroom. He wrote his name on the blackboard. He

wrote with a beautiful handwriting JHUNE JENKINS. The name was familiar to Steve. The only

problem was he could not place the name into a situation where theyve met. Now he said forthis class to become an interactive class I need to know your names. Mr. Jenkins eyed his

students. Who would like to go first? He eyed them like a hawk. He picked up his clipboardand browsed the names. He saw one familiar to him, Steve Preston. Steve Preston he called

out. Right here sir. Steve shouted out. Kindly tell us who you are and what you want to be

after taking my class? Steve stood slowly and raised his chin. Good morning everybody I am

Steve Preston. After taking this class I would like to be a writer, not now but someday. He satdown and gave out a sigh of relief. Steve, how are you related to Mary Preston? He felt

I figured youd like pancakes. Enjoy

honey. Dont forget to give your

    sister her allowance

nervous. No one in his lifetime asked about his mother. She is my mom sir. The entire class

eyed him in amazement. He did not sink into his chair, he just smiled. He was proud of his

mother and he plans to be like her, a great writer. The rest of the day went well for him. He madenew friends. Patrick and Marie were brothers and sisters. Patrick is a senior and Marie is a

sophomore. They hung out all the time. With his newly found friends it was a great start.

Over dinner his mom asked about his first day. He told her about the encounter with Mr.Jenkins. That old boy still knows my name? It has been twenty years since I last talked withhim. Stephanie eyed her mom like a hawk. There was a lot in her mind that she wanted to ask

her mom but then again she thought otherwise.

As Steve lied down in bed he thought of how lucky he was in making new friends. Theday was a great one and he learned that we should enjoy each day and not give a thought about

tomorrow. He thought of what happened today and didnt give a care about what may happen

tomorrow. We cannot dwell on what might or what will be because it hasnt happened yet. He

told himself. He woke up early this time. They didnt rush to school. In his literature class a girl

entered and caught his attention. He asked Patrick who the girl was and he replied. That my

friend is Avery, top of our class. He then waved for Avery to join them. Avery Id like you tomeet my newly found friend Steve. Avery smiled at Steve. Hello, Steve nice to meet you.

Friendship was born between the two in an instance. Avery is a smart girl, top of her class. She is

a booklover. She dreams of becoming the most feared journalist in her generation. When class

was dismissed they headed for the cafeteria. They spent most of their free time in the cafeteriasharing stories with each other. Steve Avery shouted. What? Steve answered nervously. I

want to meet your mom. Avery continued. Why is that? Steve replied. Well, first because

she is the most respected author of her time. Second, because she is my idol and third because Iwant to meet her. Steve smiled and gave and agreeing nod.

Dinner for tonight was fish and chips coming from their favorite deli. Mom, can I have

some friends over dinner this Saturday? Steve asked. Why sure dear if thats okay wi th

Stephanie? Stephanie, enjoying her food, nodded an agreement and said, Its alright with meand besides Steve will introduce me to the apple of his eye. All of them laughed at the dining

    table.

Saturday came and his friends arrived on time for dinner. They brought along with theman apple pie and a strawberry short cake that Avery baked just this morning. They were having

fun. Marie seems to be getting along with Stephanie. Patrick and Steves mom were discussing

new ideas about the new book the she was working on. Avery and Steve were talking aboutbooks. They had a lot in common. The night ended with farewells. Patrick and Marie took their

bikes home and Avery, who lives around the corner, decided to walk home. Steve escorted

Avery home. The cold night breeze hugged them with anxiety. They talked a little more about

themselves. Did you ever fall in love? Steve asked. Once actually, I fell in love with mybestfriend. Whyd you ask? Steve smiled. Follow up question have you ever had the chance to

tell him but didnt have the guts to do so? Avery looked puzzled. Why are you asking such

things? Are you in love? If yes, with whom? Avery insisted for an answer. Steve just smiled

and said nothing more. Silence overthrew the moment. They walked with just silence betweenthem. Well, this is you. Avery hugged him tightly. Thank you Steve for a wonderful night.

Steve stared into her eyes. Shining like the stars above. That smile that held a thousand stories.

And the nose the twitches when she is laughing. Both of them stared at each other. Blood gushedthrough his body. He never felt like this before. With every inch of space between them

diminishing as their lips come together. They were about to kiss. The door opened and Averys

dad said. Good evening to you. Steve stepped back and greeted him. Avery introduced him to

her parents. They were very welcoming. They exchanged pleasantries and bid his good bye. Onhis way home he thought of ways to tell her how he felt, through a letter or personally. That he

didnt know. He was more afraid of what might happen after that. He reached the front lawn of

their house and he saw Stephanie preparing for her evening walk. May I join you little sister?he asked. Sure she replied with a smile. They rounded theblock and out of nowhere Stephanieasked. Do you like Avery? Steve was amazed with the question. Will he tell the truth or will he

lie. What makes you say that? he retorted. Well, every time you look at her you always end up

smiling. What if I say yes? Well, youve managed to tell the truth again. They bothlaughed. The passed the tall sycamore tree. You know Stephanie, dad and I used to walk every

night around this neighborhood and he would say, when you grow up follow your dream because

youd behappy if you do. Stephanie held her brothers arm tightly and said. You miss him

dont you? Steve smiled at her and held her hands. Yes I do. Stephanie leaned on herbrothers shoulder and said. I miss him too. They neared their front steps, as Stephanie was

about to open the door and enter she said. Write the letter Steve. Steve nodded in agreement.

Steve spent the rest of the night creating the letter and it was perfect. Before they enteredclass the following morning, he looked for Avery but she was nowhere to be found. He waited

until the day was over and Avery was not there. He asked Marie where Avery was and she gave

a terrible answer. He just found out that Avery was going to leave tomorrow morning bound to

New York. Her father was transferred there as a special detail for a politician. Her father was apolice and he was promoted to become the commissioner of the big apple. Steve was about to

leave when Marie said. Steve, if I were you, Id tell her now because hearts are often broken

with words left unspoken. That night he walked to Averys house. He knocked three times but no one was

answering the door. The lights were on maybe they were just busy packing. He inserted the letter

into their door and knocked again and left. Avery opened the door but no one was there. She saw

the letter and opened it. She smiled as she read it. She ran to the sidewalk to look for Steve buthe was nowhere to be found. Just as she was about to enter the house she heard gun shots. Her

father reacted and ran out of the house to assess the situation. Avery saw a man run across lawn

and away. Her father followed the man. She ran towards the group of people and what she fearedmost is what she saw. Steve was lying on his own pool of blood. Avery got to her knees and

shouted. Somebody get an ambulance! She held Steves hands tightly. Everything will be

okay Steve. Stay with me please. Steve was saying something. Avery placed her ear by hismouth. Avery was already crying. Steve took his last breath.

During his necrology, his friends spoke about him and all the great things he has done.

Only two people made a difference it was Stephanie and Avery. Stephanie spoke first.

Steve stood there for me when I felt bad and depressed. He stood by my side

when my dad passed away. Beyond everything he was a great brother. I would not

forget him and everything he had done for me. When I felt alone he was there for

me. On the evening of February 14 I went to a restaurant to meet a date but hedidnt show up. I was alone that night. Out of nowhere my brother arrived and

joined me for dinner. He had done everything right. He had done loads of things

for me. I would never forget him. It breaks my heart to say good bye but until wemeet again. I love you Steve.

Every emotion flowed. Tears fell and memories were recanted. We do not cry becauseof bereavement. We cry because of the memories shared together. It was Averys turn.

I first met Steve in our Literature class. He was charming and cute. I fell in love

with him. Every memory spent with him is a memory that I will cherish forever.

The night when he passed I read a letter and I would love to read it to all of you.

    Avery,

Hey, I couldnt find any other way to say it so. I love you. The first time I eversaw your face I fell in love. You are beautiful inside and out. You are as lovely as

the April rose, a rose that blooms in adversity but the most beautiful. Your smile

dazzled me from the beginning, your eyes shining like the distant star. Some maywant to be you sun to shine on your everyday but I want to be you moon and star

so that I can shine for you on your darkest hour. There is no other way I want to

put it. I want to spend my time with you and to hold you near. I want to have you

by my side and to love you here and forevermore. I love you very much Avery.

Its the sweetest thing I have ever read. The people who did this stole something

from me that even time could not replace. The life of the person I love. Steve, Ijust wish that you are here to hear me say I love you too.

We often take for granted the opportunities that we get. Once you have it in front ofyou grab it, because we can never dwell on what might have been. The truth, no matter how

powerful can still be the cause of ones despair. Everyone has the courage to tell the truth but

everyone is frightened of what may happen next.

The Last Danceby: Paul Nichol De Vera

~Chris~She was sitting alone at their table. She seemed so lonely. Everyone else danced and was

making a night to remember. The last two songs was about to be played. I saw her bestfriendapproach her, they chatted as the song took its course. Ladies and Gentlemen the last dance. Ayoung boy approached her bestfriend and once again she was left alone. The song started to play.

I moved my feet and started to walk towards her. She saw me approach but her expression wasneutral. I asked, May I have this last dance? She didnt say a word. I stared at her eyes, sadness

filled them. Weary surrounded them. What is her story? I hear my own thoughts. She stood andsmiled. Yes you may she answered. As we danced I took a glimpse of her eyes. Weary and

sadness were gone, they have been replaced by joy. Her eyes sparkled like the stars in the night.

Those sparkling brown eyes captured my heart. I never felt like this before. It seems that though

small and simple, it can be powerful enough to capture a mans heart. The song ended with theword love and yes, I just fell in love. I escorted her back to her seat. She offered me a warm

smile. I said, Thank you for the dance. She hugged me out of nowhere. My heart pounded andI am sure that she felt my heart beat. She whispered in my ears thank you for not leaving mealone. I said my good bye and made my way back to our table. The night was coming to an end.

We exited the hotels grand ballroom. I found myself looking for her. I know her face but I never

got the chance to ask her name. I see her around school every day at lunch time but her nameescaped me. I searched the sea of people but I never saw her again. I went home that night

thinking of her and trying to recall her name. I couldnt sleep that night. I thought of her

sparkling brown eyes with that wonderful smile and the warm heart that she possesses. On

Monday I would see her and it would be a great day to know her name. She was the Cinderella tomy story and I just hope that I am his prince charming.

The cold Monday morning embraced me. Today is the start of the week and I know that I

would finally discover the name of the girl who captured my heart. I arrived at school a littleearly than before. I searched the hallway for her beautiful face but I could not see her. Chances

were getting slim, time was against me I almost gave up but then I saw her, the beautiful girl

who captured my heart. Her smile swept me off my feet. She walked towards me and I

approached her and said. Good morning. She looked at me and said good morning too. Itook her hand and inserted a small box. I smiled at her and said. Thank you for last Friday. She

smiled at me. I want you to have this. The school bell rang and her bestfriend, the one from

their table, shouted. Come on Elise we are going to be late for class. Then she was off. I finallygot her name, the beautiful Elise.

~Elise~My feet ached all throughout the night, this festivity was wonderful but I felt tired. The

last few songs are being played and I am alone here at our table. My bestfriend, Nicole sat beside

me. She was enjoying herself and I envy her. You should dance you know? I looked at her andsaid. How would I dance if no one would ask me? The last song was about to be played. James

my seatmate in class approached our table and asked for Nicoles hand for the last dance. James

is the boy who is the object of Nicoles affection. I saw Chris across the room standing there. Heis a senior and is about to graduate this year. He is also the head of our student government. He is

a great leader and I wish that he would just ask me for this one final dance. The song started to

play if Im not mistaken the song was entitled What I did for love. They usually save the best

song for the last dance but this song was new to my ears. Chris started to walk towards our table. My heart jumped. He stood beside me and asked. May I have this last dance? I didnt know

what to answer so I stood and said yes. He took my hand, my heart was pounding. He held it

tight and brought me to the middle of the dance floor. We danced without a care in the world. Helooked into my eyes and I looked into his. Somehow, we were thinking of the same thing. Myfeet didnt hurt this time and I felt no pain whatsoever. I felt safe and secured to be in his arms. It

is one of the greatest feelings I have ever felt. The song ended with the word love and he

escorted me back to our table. I sat as he said thank you. I smiled and then out of nowhere Ihugged him and whispered into his ears Thank you for not leaving me alone. He said his good

bye but I wish he hadnt. I and Nicole made our way out of the grand ballroom. I looked for him

and never saw him again that night. On my way home I couldnt stop thinking of him. How he

held me gracefully and how we danced to the song. His eyes were perfect to be the man of mydreams. Sleep escaped me as I thought of him that night. Everything about him amazed me in

many ways I could not explain. Was I falling in love or was this just a feeling that lasts

temporarily. The answer, I didnt know.Monday finally came, for others it is just another boring beginning of the week but for

me it is the day that I would confirm what I felt for him. My mom drove me to school that

morning. As she pulled over at the front of our school I saw Chris. Every morning he stands

there but today he seemed restless. I got off the car and our eyes met. I smiled at him andapproached him, he met me halfway. He bid his good morning and I gave mine. He suddenly

took my hand and inserted a small box. That simple touch gave me a mini heart attack. I finally

confirmed that I was in love with him. I was shocked and excited, shocked of why he gave me asmall box and excited because of what might be in the box. The moment was ruined when Nicole

called me out. I just smiled at him and went to class. Our teacher in our first class called in sick

so we had the hour to ourselves. I went out into the tables just outside our classroom. I placed the

box on the table. It was sealed by a golden colored ribbon. I opened it and I saw a beautifulbracelet. Pink and blue stones surrounded it. The pink one was in the form of a butterfly and the

blue one was in the form of a flower. I argued my thoughts for a moment, should I wear them? I

asked myself. It is the nicest gift anyone has given to me. I wore it then I realized was he also inlove with me? This thought lingered around my mind and I was willing to do anything for the

    answer.

    ~Chris~

Surely I was not myself when I entered the classroom. My thoughts drifted around her. I

was truly and madly in love with her. I wish I could tell it but it seems that I have no strength forit. I am going to graduate in a couple months and I wish that I could tell her before that. All

throughout the day I was given responsibilities and for the next few days I would be very busy I

    need to tell her today.

    ~Elise~

Our last class was dismissed early. Mom was supposed to pick me up but she wasrunning late. I sat by the tables where I sat earlier and waited. I brought out my notebook and

started to do some requirements. The school was almost empty that time. I saw him walk pass

me, I figured he was on his way to the principals office. He is a busy man but I felt a little pain

because he didnt even say hi or even a single hello. Mom is here any minute now and I wish thathe would come and sit beside me even for a while.

~Chris~I was rushing towards the principals office to submit a report when I saw her sitting

alone. Again she was alone. I felt bad not to even say hello but I really need to submit that report.

While I was talking to our Principal my thoughts drifted to her. I really want to talk to her thatday but I am very busy. After talking to the principal and having our last project signed I ran to

the tables where I saw her she was about to leave. She dropped her physics book and I knelt to

pick it up. Our hands met and I observed that she was wearing the bracelet that I gave her. It

gave me great joy to know that she liked it. I asked, Do you have the time to talk? She frownedand said I really have to go my mom is waiting for me I just smiled in understanding. Okay

then, Ill see you tomorrow Elise. She walked away just that should I just say it as she walked

away? Then she was gone. That night I argued with myself should I text her? Should I visit hershe only lives six doors down the street. I really want to tell her. I was about to text her when my

phone rang. It was our Student Secretary I took the call and forgot to text her that night.

    ~Elise~

I walked away wanting to tell him. Should I make the first move or wait for him. Never

in my life have I wondered what to do next. Who knows what might happen if I do tell him. Ipromised myself if I get another chance Id tell him but for now, studies. A week passed and I

havent heard from him. Should I talk to him? I didnt know what to do. Tomorrow will be the

last day that Id see him before he goes to college and still he doesnt know how I feel for him

yet. He needs to know the truth. Its Thursday today and I saw him walking towards me holding a folder and reading it

while he walked. I called for his name and he stopped.

    ~Chris~

Elise, I have been dying to talk to you all week. Do you have the time? I asked her andshe smiled at me. She answered Yes I have the time. I smile with joy and said Lets go to a

quiet place. We made our way across the hallway and to the tables where we last talked to each

other. Elise, I want you to know ever since that last dance I was able to do things to perfection

and it was all because of you. I cant believe Im saying this but I am in love with you. My heartpounded with every word I said and she looked at me with those sparkling brown eyes.

~Elise~Every word that he said made him a real man. Those sweet words that he uttered became

my downfall. I held his hand and looked into his eyes and said. I want you to know that ever

since you gave me that bracelet I have been dying to know if you had feelings for me too andyes, I am in love with you too. I hugged him tightly. I can hear the voice of Nicole and James
