Vice president is an important job. One of the most important jobs in America. The Vice President is the Second in-command of the country. The vice president is in charge of the Senate meetings. He would take over for the president if anything happened to him, such as impeachment, death, or not being able to take care of his duties as the president.

The 17th Vice president of America in 1869 was Schuyler Colfax. He was Vice President under President Ulysses S. Grant for the Republican Party. Colfax was known as a good natured, kindly Congressional man. He earned the nick name from the Indians “Smiller”. Henry Wilson was the next vice president. He was vice president to Ulysses S. Grant and they were part of the Republican Party. He was in office from 1873-1875. During the Civil War he was known as a Radical Republican.

The 19th vice president of the America was William A. Wheeler. He was in office from 1877-1881 and was part of the Republican Party. The Republican Party chose him for his honesty and good character. The President at the time was Rutherford B. Hayes. The next vice president was Chester A. Arthur of the Republican Party. The president at the time was James A. Garfield who died early in his term. So Arthur became the 21st President of America.

The 21st vice president was Thomas A. Hendricks of the Democratic Party. He was only in office from March 4, 1885 to November 25, 1885. He died unexpectedly in his sleep on November 25. After the death of Hendricks, Levi P. Morton took over and was in the Vice Presidents office from 1889 to 1893. He was in the Republican Party with James Harrison.

The role of the vice president was preceded by Adlai E. Stevenson who was in office from 1893 to 1897. Garret Hobart was the next Vice President and he was in office from 1897 to 1899 and served under William McKinley for the Republican Party. He died in 1899 of heart disease. He was followed by Theodore Roosevelt for the Republican Party. He was in office from 1901 to 1905. The next Vice President was Charles Fairbanks. He was under Theodore Roosevelt for the Republican Party and he was in office for 1905 to 1909.

Out of these Vice Presidents a few of them became Presidents later. In 1881 James A. Garfield was assassinated and the vice President that replaced him was Chester A. Author, who became the 21st President of the United States. When William McKinley was assassinated in 1901, Theodore Roosevelt replaced him and became the 26th President.

At the beginning of 1873, there was a bad time in the financial economy that was called the Long Depression. It was a world wide depression, but was most severe in Europe and America. It was right after a strong economic growth from the Second Industrial Revolution. At the time it was labeled the Great Depression but that name was later given to the Depression of the 1930s. In 1873 a total of about 18,000 businesses went bankrupt. The Long Depression lasted to the end of 1879 and lasting 65 months. It was the longest depression.
