The Final Report It has been with a great deal of honour and pride that I have been able to serve the children, parents, staff and people of Warren for the past 4 years. This has certainly been a highlight of my career, and I will be leaving with many fond memories. The

end of my career as a teacher will be sad, but I hope that I will be able to look back with pride and say “I made a difference”. Warren Central School begins a new journey as a PBL School with the focuses, Responsible, Respectful, Learners, being taught to all students. These were voted, well and truly, with the greatest number of votes for the focus areas to concentrate on at the school and in the community. Thus the journey begins, a journey of change and development. PBL is not an overnight fix. It may take years to see the positive impact on the school and community. I would like to wish Mr Wade Greenwood all the very best as the new Deputy Principal. I know that with the support of our community, he will be able to make a difference. I would like to take this opportunity wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday, and pray that you will be blessed by remembering the real reason for Christmas holidays. I will be looking forward to having most of my family at home in Wee Waa. Wonder what it will be like not to be counting off the days until school starts again? Again thanks to all. Year 6 Celebration Luncheon On Monday 9/12/13 we held our annual Year 6 Celebration Luncheon with 85 students (Y5/6), parents, carers, staff and guests sitting down to a beautiful roast dinner, catered by Suzanne Mayger, The Nursery Café. Miss Emma Rice made and decorated a huge chocolate mud cake…hmmm…yum! The hall was a wonderland of rainbow colours with balloons, plates, serviettes, cutlery and dishes of lollies on every table. Ruth Cant began the luncheon by saying Grace. After lunch Saranna Fisk spoke on behalf of the Kinder to Year 5 students and the K-6 Staff. Then Year 6 received their commemorative shirts and cut the cake. The year 6 students each received a placemat with interesting individual photos and a bucket of lollies as a good luck gift. The luncheon ended after Max Irving and Felix Weston, the 2013, captains made a thank you speech on behalf of Year 6. We wish Year 6 all best in their future endeavours.

K-6 Thank You We would like to thank all those wonderful parents and carers who continually assist our students by providing transport to various excursions and sporting events, as some children would not get the opportunity to participate if we didn‟t have such a supportive community. Our many thanks go to the School P&C, Mrs Oriel and the volunteers who assist in the School Canteen, the Red Cross Breakfast Club, the Warren CWA, the Warren Shire, the Warren Weekly, Scripture Teachers, Mrs M. Irving who looks after the school website and spends many hours taking and organising photos, to our community volunteers who assist with our reading programs and I‟m sure there are many other community members who give up their time to support the students and staff in our school. Thank you to Mr Leman and Mr Moffitt who have been teaching Year 1/2 and Year 5/6 respectively when Mrs McCormack and Mrs Quigley both went on maternity leave. You have done a fabulous job! Thank you to the many and varied casual teaching staff who have worked in K-6 through 2013, and sometimes at very short notice. We appreciate everything you do. It has been a fantastic year and we look forward to more exciting and fabulous things coming our way in 2014. We wish you all a safe, healthy and happy Christmas, New Year and holidays. Ms Reeves, Mrs Westgarth, and the K-6 Staff.

Story Writing K-2 I am an angel cookie and no one is allowed to eat me. I am on a plate. Tomorrow it is Christmas Eve. Santa will eat me tomorrow night. I might still be alive if Santa doesn‟t eat me. I could play with Ben all day and still no one can eat me. Zoey Daley Year 1 I am a star still in my box. I am pretty and sparkly. My box says “star” on it. I am gold with stars on me. I got bought today. I am new, but I am going out of my box tomorrow morning. No one will choose me but one little boy chose me and said “I will put you on my Christmas tree forever.” When Mum came home from work I will surprise you. Shamika Kentwell Year 1 If I was an Elf I would see Santa every day. I would be with him where ever he goes. I would see kids every Christmas and every year. Honing her Skills

Our secondary captain, Meg Callander, added to her resume with a second place in the Food and Beverages Competition at the regional WorldSkills final held in Dubbo recently.

On display were Meg's "front of house" and presentation skills that would be utilised if she was working in a five star dining establishment. "Meg performed extremely well and only missed out on first place by two points," said our Hospitality teacher, Ms Rice. WorldSkills Australia runs a national program of regional competitions which provide young people the opportunity to demonstrate and receive feedback on their workplace skills.

Learning to Save Lives These days it is not uncommon to find completion of a first aid course a requirement to work in particular industries. Recognising this, the successful completion of a first aid course is a mandatory competency in all Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses in the NSW Higher School Certificate. Students in Years 10 to 12 at Warren Central completed their course last week with Assurance First Aid. A number of staff also took the opportunity to refresh their skills as required by the Department of Education and Communities. Everyone enjoyed the day.

WCS Students Enjoy the Fishing Running in conjunction with the Macquarie River Fishing Classic at the weekend was the inaugural Warren Central School Fishing Classic, an internal school competition organised by Maths teacher and local fishing enthusiast, Bill Murray.

Bill explained, “Some of our students quite enjoy fishing so I thought the weekend‟s competition would be a great opportunity to get them involved in a community event, whilst participating in our own. It was gratifying to see eleven students sign up and I was particularly impressed with the great sportsmanship they displayed. There was not one “tall fishing tale‟!”

“Moving forward I‟d like to see the school‟s involvement continue. CEO of RiverSmart, Bill Phillips was certainly impressed with the model we used and expressed an interest in involving other river towns‟ schools in the future,” commented Bill.

At Sunday night‟s presentation ceremony at the Golf Club Bill was asked to bring everyone up to speed with the school‟s participation.

“I was really pleased with the reception the students‟ involvement received and in fact, a number of representatives of local business houses and organisations indicated an interest in coming on board with us next year in different capacities, including as sponsors.”

“This year we were thrilled to have the support of Uncle Clarries who donated lures for prizes.”

Prize winners in our internal competition were: Biggest Cod - Tom Mitchell, Biggest Carp – Tom Fuller and Kyle McClenahan, Most Carp Caught – Louie Yilmaz, Nearest to the Mystery Length – Malik Girdler and Scott Sayers.

Staying Strong Representatives of the NSW Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) visited us this week. They are running an awareness campaign called Staying Strong: Act, Connect, Survive which aims to build young Aboriginal people‟s resilience around drugs, alcohol and blood borne viruses. Over the course of three days the students worked on activities which included writing and recording a song and video, facilitated by the award winning Aboriginal hip hop band, “The Last Kinection.” Once post production is complete in a couple of weeks our students‟ video should be available for viewing from www.stayingstrong.com.au.

Warren Central School students help at the Warren Lions and Rotary Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon An invitation was extended to Warren school students, K-12, to help and entertain at the annual Lions and Rotary Senior Citizens Christmas Luncheon held on Sunday 8

December at the Warren Sporting and Cultural Centre. Thank you to Ruth Cant, Jocelyn Gray, Courtney Graham, Jane Carey, Abigail Irving and Emily Smith who sang five Christmas carols to the Warren seniors.

In addition to singing Courtney, Jane, Abigail and Emily played in a small ensemble made up of the clarinet, flute and cornet to pass on some Christmas cheer. They also helped the Lions volunteers and Rotarians serve the delicious Christmas lunch. It is great to see our students being involved in local community events and giving up their own time to do so.

Warren Central at the Carols by Candlelight Warren Central School will be represented again this year at Warren‟s Carols by Candlelight which will be held this coming Sunday, 15 December. Students from both the Primary and Secondary will be performing in a combined choir. Three Secondary girls will also be leading one of the more contemporary carols. Four of our students are currently attending rehearsals to play in the Warren town band which will be playing on the night. Well done to all students who have been attending practices and who will be performing at the 2013 Carols by Candlelight.

Royal Far West and partners pilot anew child health screening program in Warren

Royal Far West is partnering with Western Local Health District to pilot in Warren a new „whole of child‟ health screening program called the Healthy Kids Bus Stop. It is being supported by Auscott and the Commonwealth Bank. Other partners include Warren General Practice, Western Medicare Local, Warren Council and Ronald McDonald House Charities. The pilot program provides a full child health evaluation that includes a physical health check of eyes, ears and teeth, as well as testing of language, learning and coordination. Vaccinations will also be available for children who need them. “The Healthy Kids Bus Stop is a transition program to support children and their health needs prior to starting school,” explained Donna Parkes, Royal Far West‟s Manager of Rural & Remote Services. “It is unique because it combines the support of private sector donors such as Auscott and Commonwealth Bank, with the health resources from the Western Local Health District and the non-government organisations including Royal Far West, Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Western Medicare Local,” she said. The program is available to children who are turning 4 in 2014, currently 4 to 5 years old. Check-ups will be conducted at Warren Sports Complex from Monday 24 to Friday 28 February, 2014, between 9am and 4pm every day. Bookings are required. Make a free call to Royal Far West on 1800 500 061 and ask for the client services desk. A 2 hour health check time slot will be booked for you and your child. The Healthy Kids Bus Stop gets its name from the fun but efficient methods used to screen large numbers of children. Each child will be given a „bus pass‟ which they will have stamped at each „bus stop‟ around a large room. Each „bus stop‟ will be one type of health check station so by the end of the session each child should have stopped at each station. It‟s not all serious; there‟s also a „bus stop‟ for a play area equipped with toys and games. This stop is supported by the local playgroups who have also volunteered their time and resources to support this event. About Royal Far West
