Customer magazine for Fire Alarm-, Communication- and Security Systems of Schrack Seconet AG
Dear customers andbusiness partners ofSchrack Seconet AG,
Creating security – that’s thedeclared goal of the employeesof Schrack Seconet, wherever theywork. And this is also the goalof our daily work. Differentapplications call for differentsolution options. A new trend is
the battery-operated home smoke detector. While this product is fit for use in privatehouseholds it can never have the sameperformance as a professional fire alarmsystem, for instance as regards the transferof alarms, fire control devices, etc.
Our development department hascome up with an additional tool for ourcommunication system VISOCALL IP. Wewill introduce VISOCALL IP basic and itsapplications to you in the main story.
I am particularly pleased that the newChief Operation Officer of Securitas AG,Armin Berchtold, has agreed to givingan interview to “Fire & Care”. As centerof competence for fire-alarm systems, communication and accounting systems ofSecuritas Group, Schrack Seconet closelycooperates with its Swiss colleagues andplays a major role in the development ofa fire alarm panel for the Swiss parentcompany and its markets.
In the article on the penultimate pageof our magazine we have provided you withinformation on very special projects andwith recommendations for books that dealwith our branch of business, taking eithera scientific, literary, culinary or humoristicapproach. Starting with this issue of “Fire& Care”, we will explain one or severaltechnical terms in this column that areconnected with a story in the magazine. Itis the goal of the Schrack Seconet glossaryto provide you with additional and detailedinformation.

here are a lot of risks in our daily lives. Man haslearned to live with them, to take precautions andthen to avoid thinking of them. For, luckily, not
every risk will result in an accident.
Automatic fire alarm systemswith automatic transfer of alarmsto the fire brigades protect peopleand property in companies, homes, hospitals and many other facilitiesand buildings. Such systems areplanned, installed and maintained bycertified companies in accordance with European andAustrian standards and the technical regulations forpreventive fire protection (TRVB). Only these automatic firealarm systems will guarantee that people and property arepermanently protected.
For private households, flats, boats, mobile homes, etc.battery-operated home smoke detectors are produced. Thesedetectors are designed exclusively for home use or fordomestic application. There are dramatic differences in thequality of detectors, depending on the manufacturer, inparticular in terms of responsiveness and battery life.
A home smoke detector can never replace an automaticfire alarm system, since it is produced and distributed for anentirely different application.
Unfortunately it has become quite common to misusehome smoke detectors for hotels, guesthouses, old people’s

basis and a set of rules for the operator as well as for thecertified specialist company and for the system’s smoothfunctioning throughout its life.
All actions performed have to be logged. These logscan then be provided as evidence to the systemoperator as well as to certification bodies. In addition,F3070 now clearly specifies the responsibility ofmaintenance companies for checking the connectedfire control devices.
Therefore the detailed study of ÖNORM F3070 is a mustfor everybody dealing with fire alarm systems.
T residences or schools. And what is even more unfortunate isthat this is supported by a directive of the Austrian Instituteof Construction Engineering. Usually, the cost factor is thedecisive reason when it comes to purchase and maintenance.Tragic incidents in the past have shown that home smoke
detectors (whether networked or not)can never be a substitute for anautomatic fire alarm system. For onlyautomatic fire alarm systems, basedon TRVB, will ensure the followingfire protection features:
• Early detection of fires and alarm transfer over ahigh-security link to the fire brigade orintervention forces.
• Actuation of fire sector elements, such as doors, elevators, air-conditions, evacuation systems, etc.
• Actuation of optical and acousticalelements in all sectors
• Network and battery supplyof the entire system inaccordance with EN 54 part 4
• Fast locating of a fire bymeans of display and/orintervention plans
• Actuation of key safes• Autonomous check of all functions
of the fire alarm system by the fire alarm paneland automatic display/transmission ofpossible malfunctions
• etc.
New standard for planning, development, commissioning, installation andmaintenance of fire alarm systems
NORM F3070 was published on February 15,2010, after intensive work on the standard by
the Austrian Standards Institute’s StandardizationCommittee 172.
On the one handthis standard forms thebasis for an Austria-wide certification forplanning, development, installation and maintenance of firealarm systems, and on the other hand it provides also the

wine. With 108 hectares of cultivated land it is among thelargest and most renowned wineries in the country and alsothe oldest one. Art, culture and culinary treats attract agreat number of visitors ever year. Fire protection is of keyimportance at the monastery, not only for the culturaltreasures but also for the people living there and their guests.
As many sectors of the monastery are heritage-protected,installation of the fire alarm system was quite a challenge.
In addition to conventionalpoint detectors, also smokeaspirating systems were usedin the archives, as well as inthe church area, and linearsmoke detectors in the nave.
The monastery’s own fire brigade now has a highly-advancedoperations control system from Schrack Seconet at itsdisposal for locating a fire as fast as possible. A verysuccessful business relationship with Schrack Seconethas existed since 2003.
Master builder Niklas Göttersdorfer from themonastery’s project management: “We have had verypositive experiences with Schrack Seconet in the past andtherefore we will keep on working with the companyalso in future. In a heritage-protected building like theKlosterneuburg Monastery it is of particular importancethat fire alarm components are installed inconspicuously. Also in our most current project, the equipment of themuseum and the collegiate church, this goal has beenachieved to perfection.”
or almost 900 years the KlosterneuburgMonastery has provided a home to the
Augustinian Canons. Its origins go back toMargrave Leopold III, who in 1113 relocated hisresidence to Klosterneuburg and in the following yearfounded the monastery, fulfilling a vow he had made.In an idyllic setting in Lower Austria, the AugustinianCanons have pledged to foster scholarship and art.
As a result, the monastery is home tonotable works of art, from the world-famous Verdun Altar from the Middle Agesto magnificent Baroque works through tomodern painting. Since its foundation in1114, the Klosterneuburg Monastery also has been growing

A total of 750 type MTD 533detectors guarantee optimum protectionin two buildings. In 2007, the MTD 533even received the GIT Award. Thisprize is awarded by the magazine “GITSicherheit + Management”. The firedetectors at UNAMI headquarters wereinstalled at “Divan”, the office building, and “Tamini”, the accommodationbuilding.
The headquarters of UNAMI islocated in what is called the “greenzone”. This area must not be attacked.Nevertheless, there are security rules inplace, holding that the staff must not
bring their families .Theirs is what is called a“non-family mission”.The opposite would be the “familymissions” in other trouble spots. Outsidethe “green zone” there are about six toten bomb attacks every day and manycases of abduction. All told, the taskof Schrack Seconet employees was nota mean one. Soon, the regional officeof UNAMI at Erbil in the autonomousregion of Kurdistan will be equippedwith fire alarm systems of SchrackSeconet. This is a less troublesome areawhich is less prone to crisis.
s everyone knows, Iraq is a trouble spot, where insecurityand violence prevails in many regions. Still, Schrack
Seconet has contributed its share to safety byequipping the headquarters of the United Nations AssistanceMission for Iraq (UNAMI), based in Bagdad, with fire alarmsystems.
KEA is probably the most popular furnishing house inAustria. Ten thousands of people throng to the giantstore in Vösendorf every week, searching for modern
furniture for their homes on the sales premises of theSwedish furniture store.
On an area of more than 38,000 m2 visitors of the renownedIKEA furniture store, which was equipped with preventive firealarm systems throughout the premises, may make their lifestyledreams come true.
Already back in 1995, the responsibles of IKEA Vösendorfentrusted Schrack Seconet with the installation of fire alarm systems.Since that time the Maxima system has provided the greatest safetypossible. Now the Integral system, the most advanced technologyon the market, is used in the system, which has also been expandedto integrate the annex. Without disturbing ongoing operations, the work was performed smoothly, and fire monitoring as well wassafeguarded throughout the installation work.
All over the IKEA premises, complex fire control devices wereimplemented for smoke ventilation systems, which are actuated

by Schrack BMZ Integral. Theindividual smoke extractionzones can either be controlledautomatically or manually bymeans of a control panel specificallydesigned for this purpose. In addition, three gas extinguishingsystems and two atomized water spray systems are actuated by aspecial Integral extinguishing control panel, and a sprinkler systemis integrated into the system by means of another Integral.
“The systems of Schrack Seconet are absolutely reliable. Thisis the most important criterion for us and therefore we have beenputting our trust in Schrack Seconet for many years. The cooperationwith the company is extremely agreeable,” says Rudolf Grünberger,Head of building services at IKEA Vösendorf.

he demands in the health sectorare increasing. This is a good thing, forwe all want the highest comfort andsecurity as well as fast and reliable
information when we are staying at a hospital. And the same applies to nursing and care forthe elderly. Our senior citizens, who spendtheir twilight years in homes, also have the
right to perfect communication and information. This puts the highest demand on medical andnursing staff. Therefore, networking strategiesfor decision makers become evermore important.By the well-planned use of intelligent technologythey are provided with effective instrumentsfor designing their communication accordingto their needs.
T
ith our communication systemVISOCALL IP we have created a
perfect platform for a convergentnetwork. It is based on IP technology, whichis also the basis for the Internet and thereforethe most popular technological platform, which is open for future developments. WithVISOCALL IP it is possible to build large
and secure networks and to cover the fourbasic requirements on modern infrastructures:communication, information, security andefficiency. Backward compatibility is ofparticular importance, as it makes possiblefor a network to communicate also withother systems, as, for instance, VISOCALLPLUS. In this way the new technology canalso be gradually used in an already existingbuilding.
Now SchrackS e c o n e t h a sdeveloped newc o m p o n e n t sfor this systema n d u n d e rt h e c o n c e p t“VISOCALL IPbasic” presentsall basic requirements of nurse-callsystems on the highest level of technology.Product Manager Edwin Fisar describesthe background for the development: “WithVISOCALL IP we are offering the highestlevel that can be currently achieved. Allcomponents are equipped with voicefunctions. However, there are requirementsin hospitals and homes, where the voicefunction is not necessary at all or evenundesired. With VISOCALL IP basic wehave closed this gap and can offer cost-efficient system components to ourcustomers in the framework of IPtechnology.” Of course also VISOCALL IP
basic complies with all standards anddirectives, in particular VDE 0834.
“Voiceless” basic functions
Locations where no voice function isrequired are for example waiting rooms formassage or therapy centers, stockrooms, bathrooms or toilets. Here it is sufficient togive an alarm, voice communication is notrequired. Accordingly, basic functions arelimited to call function and emergency call, diagnosis call, doctor call and nurse present. The staff called for help orient themselvesfast and efficiently by means of lamps being
activated on the device oron the displays.
Nurse terminals areoffered in two differentvariants. Variant 1 offers apresence and a call button,a doctor call and a doctorpresence button as wellas a three-line displayand an electronic signaltransmitter. Variant 2comes without display. With the conventionalpear-push button thepatient may make therequired call and switch 2lighting circuits.
Perfect partner for VISOCALL IP
VISOCALL IP basic can be integratedperfectly in the world of VISOCALL IP.The system concept provides for the useas standalone systems without voicefunction as well as the use as additionalcomponent of a VISOCALL IP system.By means of an independent insularoperation, different rooms within a wardor an entire ward may be equipped withthe “voiceless” communication solution,VISOCALL IP basic. The benefits areobvious: “Both solutions are managed byone single system: VISOCALL IP. In thisway also call forwarding and logging issafeguarded and therefore the utmost

We are well-preparedfor the future!
rmin Berchtold has been the ChiefOperating Officer of the Securitas
Group in Switzerland since thestart of the year. He had already gainedprofound insights into the intracaciesof the security sector prior to that. In anintensive break-in period of ten monthshe has made himself familiar with all thesectors of the group – from developmentover distribution and sales down to thesubsidiaries abroad and manufacturing,as well as the surveillance services offeredin Switzerland.
The new COO has readily consentedto give an interview to Fire & Care.
F&C: Why have you chosen to work forSecuritas Group? What is the special appealthat this task holds for you?
Berchtold: It was the subject “security” thathas captured me. I am certain that itsimportance will increase in the future. Moreover, I was fascinated by the particularlypositive image of this family enterprise. I sawthis offer as a big opportunity, which I reallywanted to take. And even after such a shorttime I can say that everything I expected hasturned out to be true, and even better than Ithought.
The particular appeal of the task is theexciting position we are in. After all, we canoffer both technical services with our products(alarm and security systems) and personnelservices, such as our security services. Ofcourse, such security services are almostexclusively offered in Switzerland.
F&C: What is the outstanding feature ofSecuritas Group Switzerland?
Berchtold: We have a very special corporateculture. As a group of companies we havemade it our philosophy to leave as muchfreedom as possible to our subsidiaries. Wehave, for instance, kept the names of acquiredcompanies, as their brand names are widelyknown. In the same way, the implementationof the respective market strategy is theresponsibility of the individual subsidiary andits management.
Naturally, this will work only if thesecompanies employ top people, whom we can
trust. I am very pleased to say that this isexactly how it is – we have these top managers.I also see it as my task as COO to assist mypartners in the local companies by showingpossible synergies and by helping to developthe company. The secret of our success is theindependence of the individual units, mutualtrust, flexibility in product development, shortdecision-making paths and, and this is almostinherent in the system of a family enterprise,a sustainable approach. Sustainability, whichis a universal topic today, is a principle thathas been applied by Securitas Group for morethan 100 years.
F&C: Securitas Group is a key player on theglobal security market. What changes do youexpect on this market and what will be thechallenges in the future?
Berchtold: Of course the crisis affects us aswell. But our business is more resistant tocrises and less volatile. For, on the one hand, the security business takes a long-termapproach and, on the other hand, there arealso areas, where we are dependent on sectorsthat are closely connected to the economicsituation, such as the building sector.
There will also be changes due todevelopments in technology. New decisionsfor the future have to be taken at shorterintervals. For us, this means that we have tokeep our ears to the market and that we haveto be sensitive to developments and tendencies.Where are we heading to? That’s the questionthat we have to answer in time. We willcontinue on our path of success together withour top managers.
Our great flexibility and our independencehelp us to tackle these challenges. After all,we develop our own systems and products andwe also manufacture them in Central Europe. We have all these competences in our group, because we have committed employees on alllevels. After all, success or failure is closelyconnected with the people involved. For me,therefore, personnel development in our groupis of particular importance.
Sustainable formore than 100 years!

aintenance is the summary term for threetopics: inspection, (preventive) maintenanceand repair (corrective maintenance) .
Inspection means viewing and taking stock. Acontinuous and regular comparison is conductedbetween the target status of a system at the timeof acceptance and the actual status which every daygets more removed from this original ideal status inthe course of operation. Preventive maintenance isthe periodic replacement of elements. As it is called“preventive” it is meant to prevent the failure ofparts by wear and tear. Inspection and preventivemaintenance are measures preventing damage to
the systems. Corrective maintenance is exclusivelytriggered by certain upcoming incidents and resultsin a repair of faulty system parts. Only an agreementfor complete maintenance will safeguard the smoothoperation of the system and thus a high securitystandard.

F&C: How does the group prepare for thesenew challenges?
Berchtold: I think we are positioned very wellto be able to master the challenges and keepon being successful. We have a future-orientedrange of products and services, stable structuresand a clear strategy for the future. Thereforethere is no need for us to come up withsome revolutionary actions. Our path hasbeen a successful one in the past and willremain so also in the future. I see the companieswithin our group as being a quick to reactand flexible vehicle in the alarm and securitysystems sector, as well as ones that are ableto react with agility in the markets.
F&C: Schrack Seconet is the center ofcompetence for fire alarm and communicationsystems in the group. How do you picture thecompany’s future development?
Berchtold: Schrack Seconet is a very importantpart of the group. The high competence inAustria is a very positive fact. Schrack Seconethas a high penetration rate in Austria and hasbeen able to increase its markets share on theexport markets during the past years. I thinkthat when Schrack Seconet is doing well, avery important basis for the success in thefield of alarm and security systems has beenlaid.
The successful developments of SchrackSeconet’s center of competence are anotherhighlight. After all, In Austria not onlysystems for Schrack Seconet are developedbut also products, such as the fire alarmpanel SecuriFire, whose market launch inSwitzerland, Germany and the export marketsof Securiton is well under way.
In the short period of time that I have beenwith the company I have gained a very positiveimpression of Schrack Seconet. There is noneed at all to worry about the future!
F&C: Switzerland andAustria are neighbours. Whatdo they have in common, what are the differences?
We are well-positionedfor the future!
Berchtold: During my professional career Ihave often been in contact with Austriansand enjoyed working with them. Thementalities are quite similar and if there areany differences, this is okay as well. What’simportant is to respect each other and toaccept the differences.
