The year is AD60* and the region of the Wriggle Valley, Durnovaria, in Wessex is under the control of the Romans and the Governor, Gluteus Maximus. He, alas, cannot speak English and so relies on his Councillor, Posthumous, to translate for him. Posthumous is dismissive of his boss’s attempts to accommodate the locals, money grabbing and evil and so distorts his translations for his own ends.

In a nearby village live the locals including Boudicca, (a feisty gal), her Mother, Bootilicious (the original Ancient Briton, and the Dame, who put the “Maid” into Maiden Castle and is always popular with the troops…) and her rather drippy and fragrant (in a bad way) brother, Ethelred the Unwashed. Order, after a fashion, is maintained by the Centurion, Plodus.

Governor and CreditcardMaximus have a son, Zakus Efronius, who is eager to fraternise with locals and typically falls for Boudicca. However the Romans are keen to “”romanise” these smelly and unkempt Britons to whom they take none t too kindly. Little do the villagers know they are for the chop unless… you will just have to watch the panto to see if the guy gets his “gal” and the Britons live to see another day!

I was asked to come along to the auditions by a friend "as they needed more men" when clearly what he meant was they needed more men foolish enough to dress up as women! (methinks it was a stitch up!). Nevertheless this pantois a refreshing change to the more traditional ones I have been involved with before and I am really enjoying it. Well it is good to be in touch with your feminine side......isn't it??

As you can see I play the gorgeous, if I say so myself, mother of the titian beauty, Boudicca and her brother Ethelred, the Unwashed. A perfect role model for today’s yummy mummies!

I may not be a resident of the Wriggle Valley, but that hasn’t doused my spirits as far as enthusiasm is concerned. This is my second year with the Wriggle Valley Players, and this year I was fortunate enough to be given the redheaded, Roman bashing, title role! Although I have found some parts challenging (namely some rather dire rapping skills) I’ve still really enjoyed being part of such a dynamic group. This is my final year at Yeovil College, after which I will be making my way into the big bad world, don’t worry, I’ll be keeping my eye out for Roman invaders!

Another year, another pantomime. This is my fourth on the trot although I have been with the group since we were first established over 12 years ago. “Ethelred the Unwashed” is the most unkempt character I have played. My family were against me getting into the role of this character at home, even though they would’ve gained extra time in the bathroom (surely a bonus for two teenage girls).I took up football lessons but when I said I had a good idea for strengthening the team, the trainer said “Good, when are you leaving”Oh well, when in Rome….

Page 7: ViVa Bouducca 2010 programme

I came to the auditions for this panto out of curiosity and nostalgia, neither seeking nor expecting a part; but once there, the temptation to have a go at something was just too great – and so I came away from the auditions as ‘Credita’, wife of the Governor!

It is 10 years since we put on the first pantomime ‘Cinderella’, and in those days I was involved with the musical side, playing the keyboards and attempting to organise the singing, although I always struggled with remembering who was singing what song, when, how many verses it had, what key it was in, etc –so having a speaking part is much easier – I hope!

Hi, I am back on the boards again after a couple of years absence, when I have been helping either back stage or serving the interval refreshments. This was due to work commitments not allowing me time to attend rehearsals ..... I'm one of the founder members of the W.V.P and have been involved in some way in every production we have put on.

I've really enjoyed playing the many different characters over the years, especially the dames, as it allows me to forget the misery that being a farmer has become lately. I can pretend to be someone who is larger than life and full of fun, and whilst on the subject of fun, I would just like to add what a great bunch of fun loving people the members are; I've made many new friends both young and old over the years. THANKS.THANKS.THANKS.THANKS.

I am taking on my first principal role and I am extremely nervous. I am Zakus Efronius , the son of Governor, Gluteus and Creditcard Maximus and Boudicca’s love interest and I am thoroughly enjoying the part playing the principal boy.

I am in Year 11 at the Gryphon School but started off in the Wriggle Valley Juniors some years ago. Here I am a few years later travelling through time and invading Ancient Briton.

My first performance for the Wriggle Valley Players was in “Frankenstein: The Panto” and since then, despite everyone’s best efforts, I have appeared in several other productions. My most recent performance was in “Last Panto in Chetminster” in which I played a particularly obnoxious character. Posthumous is equally unpleasant; a bullying, violent snob; so when I tell you that I am the kindest, most compassionate and modest person I know you will appreciate the true depth of my acting talent!

I have enjoyed being part of the WVP fora number of years and have been offered/press ganged/cajoled into a number of roles ranging from Theseus in Midsummer Night’s Dream to Maxi (the prettiest of the ugly sisters) in Cinderella. So I have been “polishing my sword” in readiness to suppress the local barbarians. (Well that’s what I tell Governor Posthumous anyway). I hope he doesn’t find out what I’ve really been up to on my nights off……or he may end up giving me my P XLV.By the way in case my employer sees this panto I wouldn’t really have killed the children (well probably not..). Enjoy the panto

My family have been involved with the WVP ever since it began. I joined the Junior Players in primary school and have been in several pantomimes. I am a keen football supporter and have held a season ticket for Yeovil Town for the last seven years. I am very pleased to be given the role of Garius. I often watch Match of the Day with my dad especially when Chelsea are playing.

Hi, I’m Hebe, or Hanson the Celt to my friends. I have taken part in quite a few pantomimes with the Wriggle Valley Players but this is my first speaking role. It is pretty nerve wracking not only wearing a kilt but also performing in a Scottish accent, with hints of Welsh and other nationalities! I also made and edited one of the adverts, CilitBang.

This is my first role with the Wriggle Valleys, having been involved with the Juniors some years ago. I am part of the “Match of the Day”team whose role it is to commentate on the match between the local Ancient Briton team and the incomers, the Romans. I am in year 10 at the Gryphon School and enjoy art and photography.

Page 12: ViVa Bouducca 2010 programme

I’m playing the ever so effeminate Roman Centurion, Versace – no not the fashion designer! I have designs of a very different nature.

I left my home in Cardiff to try my hand at teaching English to Italians. One thing led to another and forty years later here I am back again and still trying to get my voice heard teaching Romans to speak ancient Briton-ish.

This is my second year with the Wriggle Valley Players and it is certainly proving to be a very different year indeed. After being given the part of a brainless Scarecrow in the last Pantomime, and now becoming a heartless Italian centurion, the company is certainly stretching me to my limits.

Don’t get me wrong, in between learning the Italian accent and trying to look menacing, I do find time to have fun as well and I have found a few similarities between myself and Ferrari, we both, for example, enjoy making lots of noise and waving our swords about the place. But we are lovely deep down !

I didn't audition for the part of drunken druid - and I have no experience of Druidryor drunkenness so this part is proving to be a real challenge for me! Still it's good not to be the witch or evil stepmother for once. I didn't tread the boards until I was well into my 40s (I know it's hard to believe) and it was a passion inspired by the annual staff Panto that us teachers used to inflict on our captive audience before they were allowed to break up for the Christmas holidays. Once I'd felt the magic and witnessed the joy on their little faces, there was no stopping me…..

Page 15: ViVa Bouducca 2010 programme

From where did the idea ofFrom where did the idea ofFrom where did the idea ofFrom where did the idea ofBoudicca as a pantomime come?Boudicca as a pantomime come?Boudicca as a pantomime come?Boudicca as a pantomime come?

Well the tone of the piece was set by two things; my all time favourite joke (which does not, in fact, feature anywhere in the script) and prolonged exposure to “Carry On” films and “Dick Emery” on television as a child. Am I alone in thinking that “Carry On Screaming” remains a cinematic masterpiece? I am as confident as I can be that one of our national characteristics is a liking for a bit of sauce, and I don’t mean HP (Oooo errrmissis). At least I hope so as, otherwise, you are about to have one of the most excruciating evenings of your life so far. This got me to thinking about other national characteristics. Britons have a sense of reserve and a quiet patriotism which sometimes does us no favours. I recently read a piece written by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu (the coolest thing to happen to the Church of England since the Bishop of Southwark allegedly had one too many at the Irish Embassy Christmas party), where he called upon the nation to “reclaim the flag” which he felt had been hijacked by the far right. And he had a point. All too often we are reluctant to be overtly patriotic and wave the flag lest someone suspect that we are closet supporters of Nick Griffin. I do not want my national flag to be associated with idiots like that. And yet, despite being as far removed, politically, from Griffin as it is possible to be, I have never flown a Union Jack.

Page 16: ViVa Bouducca 2010 programme

And then we went to America earlier in the year. Now it may be a bit much for our sense of reserve on occasion, but they have an unembarrassed sense of patriotism which I think has something to teach us. Imagine my surprise at being called upon to give a big round of applause (they simply don’t do the “polite ripple”) to members of the armed forces of the US and their allies before the Shamu Show at Seaworld. Would that we had their confidence.

So we are providing you with the opportunity to wave our flag without any embarrassment. If it provokes an out-break of flag flying across the Wriggle Valley I for one will be pleased.

If you think that I have veered into the realms of the pretentious (I am prone to lapses into the fey) with my sermonising that’s fine, wave your flag in celebration of a bit of good old British smut. I shall be sticking it to Mr Griffin and his ilk.And my favourite joke?

A woman goesinto a bar and saysto the barman,

“I’d like adouble entendreplease.”

So he gave her one.

I have been an infant and music teacher at St Andrew’s Primary School, Yetminster, for many years and have undertaken a plethora of musical productions and concerts with children across the primary age range. Many years ago I also played the piano for Young Farmer productions.

This is my second year with the Wriggle Valley Players, and it has been quite a challenge choosing and teaching songs appropriate to Roman Britain in the time of Boudicca – hence “Hit the Woad, Jack” for example.

I have especially enjoyed working with so many young people, many of whom I remember teaching when they were at primary school and I can still remember their sweet smiling faces when they were in year 1 – I won’t embarrass anyone by mentioning names!

Page 20: ViVa Bouducca 2010 programme

A word from the chair...I consider myself very fortunate to have become the Chair of this

wonderful, cheerful society. Directing this completely new Pantomime has been a joyous experience made doubly so by the dedicated production team.

There are obviously too many people to thank but especial mention must be made of Phil Tebbatt without whom we would have been at a loss for words. I don't know what we will be performing next but several ideas are being suggested every time we meet so watch this space, but in the meantime enjoy "Viva Boudicca". You may never see another Pantomime quite like it, (till next year!)

Like most of the Wriggle Valley Players I have involved since its inception, about 12 years ago. I have to admit that I have yet to “tread the boards” in spite of the continual pressure from my fellow thespians. My forte is behind the scenes, sourcing props and materials for the scenery etc. I hope I also help to facilitate the smooth running of our productions.

We hope you really enjoy this innovative panto and if anything goes wrong, its not my fault – “honest guv”.

I have been part of the WVP for some years starting with a “Charlie Dimmock” sketch and Hayfever.

This time, apart from being a villager and prime “reader in”, I have been responsible for designing and making all the costumes and many of the props, which for a cast of 32 is quite a feat.

However I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and hope you appreciate my interpretations. Look out for the flies buzzing around head of Ethelred, the Unwashed.

In the past I have been a villager in Jack and the Beanstalk, wicked stepmother in Cinderella and a ditsy witch in last year’s Wizard of Oz.

This year I have been busy behind the scenes doing “a bit of this and a bit of that”. I created this programme and posters, helped with the scenery, sourced the thesound fx, and assisted with the music and videos, have also been “woading” up the ancient Britons and, my most favourite, have been tea lady.

My thanks to all the WVP for all their hard work and to Phil for a great story.

And whether abseiling and canoeing or having your say on how we operate, one thing is certain; you'll make a lot of friends and have a lot of fun.

Join us and have loads of fun
