THE FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We have been reflecting upon the gifts of the Holy Spirit for the past 7 weeks. Now we

will try to understand the fruits of the Holy Spirit in the coming weeks. The Fruit of the Holy

Spirit is a biblical term that sums up nine attributes of a person or community living in accord with

the Holy Spirit. According to St. Paul, as he speaks in the Epistle of Galatians, Chapter 5, the fruits

of the Spirit are, ‘love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-

control’. (Gal 5, 22-23) The fruit is contrasted with the works of the flesh. The Holy Spirit gives

its gifts to those who receive Him and when the Holy Spirit dwells in a person, that person will

receive the gifts and bear the fruits of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul used the term ‘fruit’ to help us

understand the product of the Holy Spirit, who

lives inside every believer. The fruit of the

Spirit is produced by the Spirit, not by the

Christian. Like physical fruit needs time to

grow, the fruit of the Spirit will not ripen in

our lives overnight. As a successful gardener

must battle against weeds to enjoy the sweet

fruit they desire, we must constantly work to

rid our lives of the ‘weeds’ of our old sinful

natures that want to choke out the work of the

Spirit.

As we learn about each fruit, let us pray

and be people who are led by the Holy Spirit,

because the manifestations of the Holy Spirit

are known as the fruit of the Spirit. If someone

is a true Christian, he has received the Holy

Spirit and, for that reason, the fruit of the Spirit

should be seen in his life. It would be difficult

to recognise someone as a Christian if these

manifestations were not found in his life, since

these are the foundational characteristics of a

life directed by the Spirit.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Divine Jesus, Son of the eternal Father and Mary Immaculate, grant many of the faithful true generosity in

following your call, and bestow on them the grace of your Holy Spirit to persevere in overcoming all obstacles to

their vocations. Give the church in this Diocese and throughout the world many holy priests and fervent religious.

Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, Blessed Justin and all Saints, we humbly

ask you to hear our prayers and multiply the ministries by which we may serve one another in faith and love. Hail

Mary…..
