"Hazy, Hot and Humid. For now I'll take it over the cold. Irish Night was a success in the end but it was not easy to
pull off. We are beginning to realize what we already knew; that Mike Greene has done a tremendous amount of all of the little things that make our Hibernian functions go smoothly and easily. Mike has decided to step down from the Green Berets after many successful years. Thank you for all you have done and we all wish you well on your second retirement. In the interim, Jim Wall has been appointed as a Trustee. Jim has been an active caretaker of our beloved Hibernian Hall. Best of luck on your new assignment.
The National Convention in Atlantic City was eventful to say the least. We had a few unwanted guests in our hotel room
but in the end it all worked out. I think I'll leave the family at home next time. Our New York candidates, Dan Dennehy and Liam McNabb, both won the bid for office as National Directors. It was unfortunate that some of our favored candidates lost especially those veterans. Look out Louisville, KY, here we come.
Don’t forget the Family picnic on August 20th in Brady Park beginning at 12 noon. It’s free for all members and their families with a $10.00 fee for guests. See you at the Park.
See you down at the Hall. God Bless
You and Keep You Safe.

The band would like to thank all those who supported our golf outing this year - a small but hardy group teed off on July 19th at Lido Beach Golf Club. For the first time in-stead of a steak dinner afterwards back at the Hibernian Hall, we availed ourselves of the catering at the golf club. It was really good and we got to enjoy ourselves this year. We are going back next year. Look for details. On July 31st - a large portion of the band played a wed-ding - both after the ceremony and at the reception. As band master it made me proud to see our band at its best. Of course when the Pipe Major get’s married what else could be expceted . Good Luck and Best Wishes Jessica and Ken. The Piper’s Ball will be October 22, 2016 at the American Legion in Massapequa, please see a band member for more information or a tickets. Please come out an cele-brate with the band as we commemorate 40 years of pip-
ing and drumming. Thursday nights from 7pm to 10pm is band practice each week. We currently have a fairly new group of students taking both the bagpipes and the drums. If you or some-one you know is interested now is the time to come on down and take lessons. The fee to join the band is still only $100 and this includes all the equipment needed to learn. There are some minor additional items but in gen-eral we keep it very affordable to join the band and receive free lessons.

Tidbits (from Mike Greene) I know I
stopped writing for the Newsletter, but
the Deeks article on the Sacred Heart
reminded me of a true story that hap-
pened many years ago.
A group of us started to Gavins in
Durham, also known as the Irish Alps.
While we were their one fall day early in
the morning, I was going for a cup of
coffee. Walking down from the second
flood I noticed Sheila Hogan and Claire
Deucher, two old time members that are
now in heaven sitting on the porch saying
the rosary. They seemed to be praying to
an object about 300 feet from them. I just
said ,Good Morning, and went for me
coffee. Upon returning my curiosity got
the best of me and I asked them who
they were praying to. Both of them point-
ed to a red box about 300 or 400 feet
away and said to the statue of the Sa-
cred Heart over there on the other build-
ing. Looking to where they pointed, I no-
ticed a red object on the building. Sad to
say it was not the statue of the Sacred
Heart. It was a fire box, the three of us
had a good laugh at that. That’s the old
times at Gavins.
We are still looking for some one to take
over this column.
As of today I have not heard any news to
report. Any News please send to:
The hall is open Fridays at 8pm come on
down to meet with old and new friends.
The trustees of the Green Beret Club
would like to thank Mike Greene for all of
his years of hard work keeping our hall
open and running smoothly. We would
like to wish him well in his 2nd retirement,
however stay close - we have lots of ques-
tions.
Keep an eye out - this fall we will have
beer and drink specials.

P a g e 3 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s “In God We Trust”
There were five Sundays in July and I found myself look-ing at the Gospels to review the themes in each. Let me summarize what we can expect for the coming weeks.
July 3rd
– Luke 10: 1-12 – He said to them, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few, so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”
July 10th – Luke 10:25 – “You shall love the Lord, your
God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
July 17th -- Luke 10:38 – “Lord, do you not care that my
sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.”
July 24th – Luke 17:1-13 – “And I tell you, ask and you will
receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “
July 31st – Luke 12:13-21 – The he said to the crowd.
“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Why not select just one of the above and reflect on your own life as it relates to that Gospel message. If you can’t find your New Testament book, go to this website (usccb.org), click on the date in the homepage calendar, hit “print” and you will have the reading.
Enjoy the summer,
Deacon Frank

An Bhfuil Fhios Agat August is a busy month—in Irish history and lore.
The month starts with the festival of Lugnasadh - which is a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of the harvest season.
Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man. Originally it was held on 1 August,
or about halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox. However, over time the celebrations shifted to the
Sundays nearest this date. Lughnasadh is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with Samhain, Imbolc and
Beltane. It corresponds to other European harvest festivals such as the Welsh Gŵyl Awst and the English Lammas.
Lughnasadh is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and has pagan origins. The festival itself is named after
the god Lugh. It involved great gatherings that included religious ceremonies, ritual athletic contests (most notably the
Tailteann Games), feasting, matchmaking and trading. There were also visits to holy wells. According to folklorist Máire
MacNeill, evidence shows that the religious rites included an offering of the 'first fruits', a feast of the new food and of
bilberries, the sacrifice of a bull and a ritual dance-play in which Lugh seizes the harvest for mankind and defeats the
powers of blight. Much of the activities would have taken place on top of hills and mountains.
Lughnasadh customs persisted widely until the 20th century, with the event being variously named 'Garland Sunday',
'Bilberry Sunday', 'Mountain Sunday' and 'Crom Dubh Sunday'. The custom of climbing hills and mountains at Lugh-
nasadh has survived in some areas, although it has been re-cast as a Christian pilgrimage. The best known is the 'Reek
Sunday' pilgrimage to the top of Croagh Patrick on the last Sunday in July. A number of fairs are also believed to be sur-
vivals of Lughnasadh, for example the Puck Fair. Since the later 20th century, Celtic neopagans have observed Lugh-
nasadh, or something based on it, as a religious holiday. In some places, elements of the festival have been revived as
a cultural event.
On the 3rd was the 100 years since Sir Roger Casement was hanged for helping the Irish.
On August 11th it will be 270 years since the British banned bagpipes in Ireland - lead to the invention of the Uileann
pipes as a way to circumvent the law.
And lastly among many other happenings in August is August 21, 1845 - the first day of An Gorta Mor.
Wouldn’t it be fitting that we honor those who were killed or forced from their native Ireland by
holding a food drive at the Division 15 picnic. Please if you are attending, bring can goods or non-
perisible food to the picnic which will be donate in the memory of the An Gorta Mor victims to the
St. Rose Parish food pantry.

CONGRATULATIONS, CONDOLENCES & PRAYERS
Hopefully everyone is having a wonderful summer and getting by through this crazy heat wave. The National Convention in Atlantic City was a great time but was also very busy. There were many meetings (and I mean many lol) that were extremely informative. I would like to thank all of you for the opportunity to represent you at the Con-vention. I was on multiple committees including Press & Publicity, Rituals (acted as Secretary) and Constitution (acted as timekeeper). There were multiple changes/additions to the constitution which I will review at our next meeting in September.
The top four positions were challenged, New York held a caucus, we listened to all of the candidates that came and the results of the elections are as follows:
President: Pat O’Connell, Vice President: Carol Sheyer, Secretary: Karen Keane, Treasurer: Marilyn Madigan, Historian: Dee Wallace, Missions and Charities: Mary Ann Lubinsky and Catholic Action: Colleen Bowers.
Yours in Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity,
Joanne
