Schedule ofShabbat Services & Candle Lighting

It is two hours before Shabbat begins here in Havana, Cuba. I am looking out from myhotel window at the Malecon, a main thoroughfare in the city that runs along the ocean. The waves are crashing over the wall onto the street. It is very pretty to watch.

We have been in Cuba for five days now and to say we have made an impact on theJewish community would be an understatement. It is safe to say that the impact the Jew-ish community here has had on us is even greater. We don’t do mitzvot to feel good butit certainly feels good to do the mitzvot we have done. The generosity from members ofour community has been overwhelming. We brought over twenty five garbage bagsworth of clothing, medicines, medical needs, and school supplies. They went not only tothe Jewish community but to a school and a pregnancy clinic in the town of Trinidad deCuba. Perhaps some of the most powerful experiences for our group have been visitingand talking with members of the Cuban Jewish community. Since the ban on religionwas lifted, these Jews have done everything they can to maintain and strengthen theirJewish identity. We take so much for granted living in the United States. These Jews takenothing for granted. They are proud of who they are and continue to do so much tostrengthen and further their Judaism.

Yesterday we met David. David lives in Santa Clara and through the generosity ofJewish communities outside of Cuba, including Beth Shalom; they have almost completedthe building of a new synagogue. This synagogue will bring together Jews from threetowns in the countryside of Cuba. To see and listen to David’s passion for furtheringCuban Judaism was very moving. Everyone had tears in their eyes. Walking into a syna-gogue being built from scratch is something that most of us will never experience.Walking into a synagogue built from scratch in a foreign country where people weren’tallowed to practice religion for many years was almost indescribable. It reminded us ofhow lucky we all were to have access to Congregation Beth Shalom.

We are looking forward to Shabbat. We will share services with the Conservative con-gregation Beth Shalom, affectionately known as the Patronato. We visited this communityearlier in the week and it will be nice for us to be with them again. Some will return herein the morning while others will go to services at the Sephardic Jewish Center.

We all look forward to sharing our stories with you when we return. Thus far our expe-riences have not only been very moving, but eye-opening as well. This month we willcelebrate Chanukah, a festival where we celebrate this miracle of light. These communi-ties have given all of us new light – a light to share with all of you.

Is Judaism a “feel good” religion? I overheard one individual say to another, who was in a quandary about her observance, “Do whatever feels good”. I do notagree that a religion must be, to quote Motel in Fiddler, “a perfect fit”. I thinkthere is value to the tension within religious life, struggling as many do with bal-ancing its demands and our own comfort zones. There is a saying about theProphets of Biblical times that they were to “afflict the comfortable and comfortthe afflicted” and so too religion is to be a guiding wind and steady waters for usto ride upon but turbulent waves when we are not helping to steer the boat.

Hanukah is coming later this month and that is a “feel good” holiday; thewarmth of the candles’ glow, the nostalgic mental snapshots of our youth, choco-late coins and dreidles. Who doesn’t like a present? God’s miracles are recountedin liturgy and song and we all feel safe. “That is what I like about Judaism”, oneperson said, “it is all about family and being together”. That is NOT all it is about. That is a wonderful aspect of it but it comes with expectations and command-ments. It comes with times that mandate we inconvenience ourselves to join aminyan for others (and ourselves). It requires tzedakah even at a time when weare saving for a vacation or to make a car payment. It is not always “feel good” inthe pedestrian aspect of those words, but ultimately, if we do it right, and followthe course, it will make us “feel good”. We will come to realize we are a link inthe centuries; we are a part of the promise to Abraham of becoming a “multitude”.

The Dali Lama was reported to have quoted: “If it doesn’t make people nicer toone another, it is not religion”. I think Judaism has that idea at its core proven bythe “golden rule” of “v’ahavta l’reiacha kamocha” – “Love your neighbor asyourself” or “Do unto others...” And yet the commandments of Judaism remind usthat it goes well beyond our common sense and “good vibrations”, our lives asJews have a purpose to be an “Or LaGoyim” a light unto the other nations. Howwe comport ourselves in public and private is a testament to our faith in God andour reason for having been given life.

Now that “feels good”.

During these past High Holidays there were a number of con-gregants who asked what they could do to make a donation inhonor of, or in memory of someone, above and beyond the regulardonation format. In this article I would like to tell you about themany options available to you at Beth Shalom.

There are several different prayer books available to donate andhave inscribed on the front inside cover: Chumash “Etz Chayim”($72) which is used whenever there is a Torah reading, Siddur SimShalom for Shabbat and Holidays ($30), Sim Shalom for Week-days ($30) and minyan and comfort books ($10) that are brought tothe shiva house for your fellow congregants during their time ofneed.

A Leaf ($218) or a Boulder ($2500) on the Dishler Tree of Lifeis a wonderful way to celebrate a simcha of any kind includingweddings, b’nai mitzvah, births, special birthdays, anniversariesand graduations. When a leaf is purchased, a letter is sent to thefamily from the congregation on behalf of the donor explaining aleaf has been purchased in their honor. If you have a simcha….wehave a leaf for you.

There are also other ways of supporting the synagogue to honoror memorialize someone. The Library offers “Help the LibraryStack Up” by purchasing and dedicating a book ($54), a bookshelf($118), or a bookrack ($613). If you haven’t seen the new plaqueboards in the Library please stop in and take a look. A book may bepurchased by a young person for $18 and their name will beinscribed on the Book Plaque Board.

The “Brick by Brick” program is what helped lay the foundationof Congregation Beth Shalom’s beautiful Sukkah Terrace locatedoutside the Wintergarden. Bricks currently available are 4” x 8”Adult Paver for $118, 4” x 8” Youth Paver if purchased by a youthfor $72, or the 6” x 12” Lulav Paver for $236.

We always have the opportunity to add your name to theBuilders’ Plaque in the foyer outside of the Wintergarden. If youare interested in purchasing either the Gift of Wisdom (10,000),Gift of Understanding ($5,400) or Gift of Spirit ($1,800) pleasecontact me. All funds for this go to paying off the mortgage.

For additional information on any of these donations pleasecontact the synagogue office. Our membership hasbeen very kind and generous over the years and it isgreatly appreciated by all of us at CongregationBeth Shalom. Thank you –

ShalomDecember 2011 5

Our Thanksgiving celebrations will havejust ended by the time you read this bulletinarticle which, quite appropriately, focuses onjust that: thanks giving. For it is interestingthat-more often than not-we recognize whatis truly important in our lives only when ourdearest loves and livelihoods are threatened.Invariably, the ‘cri de coeur’ or ‘cry from theheart’ is released with grave immediacy, afear of loss triggered by a sudden reversal ofgood health, financial security, professional

status, or bedrock faith. Often, even the mere hint of a threat toone’s equilibrium will elicit a prayer for aid or guidance from God.The moment of fear passes and after an outpouring of emotion, wego on with our tasks and chores and “everyday” responsibilities. ..thus treating the miraculous as if it were mundane.

Our days are filled with opportunities to assert our gratitude forthe gifts with which our lives are overflowing.

“The insights of wonder must be constantly kept alive. Since thereis a need for daily wonder, there is a need for daily worship….Thisis one of the goals of the Jewish way of living: to experiencecommonplace deeds as spiritual adventures, to feel the hidden loveand wisdom in all things.” –Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

The siddur for our daily minyanim, Siddur Sim Shalom, beginsthe various blessings of gratitude with this beautiful reflection onliving a Jewish life wherein thankfulness, expressed through prayer,is omnipresent. Prayers over food and drink are perhaps the mostrecognizable, yet an abundance of others exist that may beunfamiliar to some worshippers.

The prayers of gratitude involve all five senses-taste, smell, sight, hearing and touch - and what I will refer to as a sixth sense:a spiritual one involving a heightened awareness of the sacrednature of our relationship with God.

Several prayers exist to affirm the glory of taste, one of which isas follows:

Praised are You Adonai our God, who rules the universe, creating the fruit of the tree.

There are also several that show appreciation for the sense ofsmell. This one is most familiar from the Havdalah service as thearoma of cloves, allspice and cinnamon envelops us as we bidfarewell to Shabbat:

Praised are You Adonai our God, who rules the universe, creating varied spices.

The sense of sight is well represented. My very favorite is one tobe said upon seeing “unusual creatures”. I find this perfectlyappropriate when I stand transfixed by one of the sea creatures at theaquarium:

Praised are You Adonai our God, who rules the universe, diversifying creation.

Hearing as a sense is covered, not just literally, as with one forthe sound of thunder, but also in a deeper, more meaningful sense. The prayer to be said upon hearing good news is as follows:

Praised are You Adonai our God, who rules the universe, thesource and Creator of all that is good.

The sense of touch is represented in the warmth provided by newclothing, eliciting this prayer:

Praised are You Adonai our God, who rules the universe, clothing the naked.

Congregation PresidentTami B. Rokni

And finally, in recognition of that sixth sense, the one thatprovides awe and meaning to our lives is one essential prayer ofgratitude.

I last said this particular prayer one evening this past Sukkot, along with Rabbi Wolkin, Rabbi Melman, Cantor Stoehr andseveral congregants. Someone began exclaiming excitedly outsidethe Beit Midrash and so we all came into the Wintergarden.

We then recited the prayer of gratitude that is proclaimed uponseeing a rainbow:

Praised are You Adonai our God, who rules the universe, faithfully recalling the covenant by keeping the divine promise.

It was magnificent.

B’Shalom, Tami Rokni

Israel Affairs

“Mai Hanukkah?” “What is Hanukkah?” --- asks the Talmud. What a strange question for the rabbis of the Talmud to be asking.Didn’t they know what the holiday of Hanukkah commemorated?Didn’t they themselves initiate the 8-day celebration beginningwith the 25th of Kislev? Since time and space will not allow adetailed answer to those questions, this article will give a briefsynopsis of the holiday.

Hanukkah, commemorates the triumph of the Jews, under theMaccabees, over the Greek rulers (164 BCE) - both the physicalvictory of the small Jewish nation against mighty Greece and thespiritual victory of the Jewish faith against the Hellenism of theGreeks. Its sanctity derives from this spiritual aspect of the victory, and the miracle of the flask of oil, when a portion of sacramentalolive oil meant to keep the Temple candelabrum lit for one daylasted for eight days, the time it took for the Temple to be rededi-cated. (Taken from the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs website).

How is Hanukkah celebrated in Israel? No different, really thanin the Diaspora. The central feature of this holiday is the lightingof candles each evening - in commemoration of the miracle at theTemple. The Hanukkah message in Israel focuses strongly onaspects of restored sovereignty; customs widely practiced in theDiaspora, such as gift-giving and the dreidl (spinning top –“Sevivon” in Hebrew). The dreidl’s sides are marked with Hebrewinitials representing the message “A great miracle occurred here”.Schools in Israel are closed during this week.

As we remember the great victory and the miracle of the oil; letus also rejoice in the blessed miracle of the release of Gilad Shilatafter being held in captivity for over 5 years. I am confident thatthe candles he and his family will light this Hanukkah season willtruly reflect the “miracle of lights” and the victory of freedom forthe Jewish people.

NEWS FROM THE KETER MINYANBy Harold Schwartz

The members of the Keter Minyan experiencedseveral joyous and uplifting services during CholHa’Moed Sukkot. My family and I are pleased toannounce sponsorship of tickets to the upcomingHelene Hoffman Memorial Concert, “Clergy Boys”,to be given to the “regular” attendees of our KeterMinyan. We felt this is but a small token to honor andexpress thanks to their devotion to the Minyan duringthe past several years. I hope to find other sponsorsfor similar expressions in the future.

Our discussion of the Tachanun prayers continueswith a bit of history of the origins of this part of theservice. The sages of the Talmud developed a customof adding personal prayers after the set prayers of themorning service (Berachot 16b). By the fourteenthcentury, these personal prayers were standardized intothe Tachanun prayers. The custom of bending overand resting the head on the left arm is derived by thesages from the first line of the Tachanun prayers,“nip’lah nah b’yad adonai”, (let us fall into the handof God). The sages also say that it reminds us of theTemple sacrifices where the animals were placed ontheir left sides to be slaughtered. According to Ashke-nazi tradition, one assumes the posture only whenpraying before the Ark. This custom is derived fromJoshua, who fell on his face to pray to God after theincident of the Golden Calf. When praying not in thepresence of the Ark, one should say the Tachanunprayers in a normal sitting posture.

As mentioned in last month’s column, Tachanun isomitted on Shabbat, Festivals, Chol Ha’Moed andmany other occasions, too numerous to list here. Acomplete listing of all days when Tachanun is omittedcan be found in the Sim Shalom Siddur. Tachanun, asomewhat mournful prayer is omitted on joyousoccasions as it would be inappropriate to put “adamper” on the festive mood. Regardless of whenomitted and when said and if additions are added onMondays and Thursdays, the Tachanun prayers are atime in the service when one can offer their ownreflections and supplications.

KERUv CORNERKERUV: Welcoming Interfaith Families

BOBSPECTOR

ShalomChaverim,I can’t believe Chanukah is only a cou-

ple of weeks away. Chanukah, yet anotherexample of how our Jewish leadershipstepped up and defended our peopleagainst our oppressors. Last month Iemphasized the importance of adopting an

attitude of greater tolerance and sensitivity for thoseguests and members who may not be well versed in ourrules and customs. Unfortunately, our forefathers andmothers did not always have the luxury of tolerance in theface of so many enemies. As our interfaith membershipgrows, we will have more and more members and guestswho may not likely be familiar with our customs at BethShalom. Over the last few years, our spiritual leaders haveimpressed upon us that we are no longer ushers for ser-vices, but we are ambassadors. We are expected to befriendly, welcoming, and kind as we instruct our membersand guests upon entering our sanctuary (literally translatedas a place of safety) about Beth Shalom’s rules and cus-toms. However, prior to these last few years the role ofusher was often defined as being a defender of our cus-toms rather than being an instructor/educator of ourcustoms. I am reminded how nine years ago my Catholicbrother-in-law was reprimanded because he forgot that hewas supposed to wear a kipah at my son’s Bar Mitzvah. Ibelieve this type of interaction is less likely to occur bytoday’s ambassadors.

If we truly desire to be a Keruv, interfaith welcomingcongregation, then every member of Beth Shalom needsto see him/herself as a welcoming ambassador. Justrecently (in September) during Rabbi Wolkin’s sermon oncompassion fatigue at my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, myCatholic sister-in-law upon being deeply touched by hismessage started to jot down a few words so she would notforget. She was told that we do not write in the synagogueon the Sabbath albeit not in the most polite way. She ofcourse felt terrible which only served to diminish herprideful moment of sharing in her Jewish niece’s BatMitzvah. If we are to embrace Beth Shalom as an inter-faith welcoming community, then our sanctuary has to bea safe place for all who enter it. Our customs do not needdefending. Violations of our customs are very rarely inten-tional. Those not in the know, whether Jewish ornon-Jewish, deserve to be instructed in a kind, respectful, and thoughtful manner. I view our transition as an inter-faith welcoming congregation as a process. I am thrilledwith the progress we have made, but it is in these briefmoments that we really define who we are and who weaspire to be.

As always, I welcome your thoughtful comments andcan be contacted at [email protected].

ShalomDecember 2011 11

It seems like each year the ever popular “holiday” commercialsappear sooner and sooner in between our favorite television shows. Assoon as the thermometer hits below 50, the department stores kick intotheir holiday decorations and those delicious holiday flavors return at ourfavorite coffee shops. At the end of the holiday aisle at our local all-pur-pose store, sits a handful of blue and silver stars, candles and a few othernecessities for our seasonal holiday, Chanukah. The irony, we all know,is that Chanukah is not a holiday of such extreme religious significance. In fact, I truly believe that if Chanukah was in March, our neighborswouldn’t know anything about it.

Perhaps the story of Chanukah and its location in the secular calendaris no coincidence. Chanukah, pitched as a story of miracles, has a muchdeeper and more important message that we often overlook. Underneaththe oil, is a story of the importance of a strong Jewish Identity. JudahMaccabee saw the threat that Greek culture was not only to the Jews ofhis time, but of the future generations. While I am not positive hethought children would be spinning dreidels and eating greasy potato-latkes as a result of his actions, I have little doubt he thought his storywould go without notice as the Jewish people continued along their jour-ney throughout history.

What we can learn from Judah Maccabee and the story of Chanukah,is that while it may be a struggle, having pride in our Jewish identity isimperative to our future. Our children’s Jewish identity is what will con-tinue to ensure that there will be Jews in the generations to come.Strengthening and sustaining that identity can come from many differentplaces; one of which can be found right here at Beth Shalom. Our chil-dren’s involvement in synagogue life, youth groups programs, HebrewSchool, and all that Beth Shalom has to offer, is vital to shaping thoseidentities.

November was a busy at CBS. We brought 17 USYers to theCHUSY regional convention called CHUSYfest, celebrated a JewishThanksgiving, spent the evening in a Limo and more. December in theYouth Department is just as packed. We will round out 2011 withKadima Convention, USY Lounge Nights, Chanukah parties and more!Look out for more information on our website and in upcoming emails.

“Yes!” I heard a couple of students say it twice. Each time fora different prayer-song. My Aleph and Bet students were in Sun-day tephilot, and “yes” is what I heard. (There also happened to beabout 38 Aleph parents in the room for a program, to which I say,“Yes!”, for that is an excellent turn-out for a class of 42 students.)Spirit and song enters a room through the combined hearts andmouths of our youngsters, and I think God listens. That is alsowhen Beth Shalom is providing something our children cannot getanywhere else. Which brings us around to Shabbat.

Shabbat, as you well know by now, is a cornerstone of our pro-gram. Ruach Shabbat Family Services take place every secondand fourth Shabbat of the month. Rabbi Wolkin commentedrecently that he liked the energy that the service generated. Socome and join us, as all are welcome! School families have arequirement of sorts that they attend at least four times over thecourse of the year. There is a log-book, in which families place astickers next to their name whenever they attend. The award forsuperlative participation here goes to the Eisenberg family: Davidand Denise, and children Joseph, Sarah, and Anne. Also, wemarked a different Shabbat milestone with our Kindergarten – 2ndGrade Shabbat dinner. Over 100 people came to dinner and thenparticipated in the Storybook Shabbat service thereafter.

Making the world a better place is another of our fundamen-tals. Recent work by Jill Olefsky, Social Action committee chair, and our teachers has yielded a school-wide agenda. Examplesinclude: Kindergarteners making “thank you” pictures for ourtroops; our 1st graders making place mats for the Ronald McDon-ald House while collecting soda can tabs to raise funds for it; andthe 2nd graders running a very successful food collection drive inthe weeks before Thanksgiving. You’ll be hearing more about theschool’s commitment in this direction in coming articles.

***I am pleased to announce the winners

of our first attendance drawing. When stu-dents come to class they fill out a smallslip of paper. These are gathered in a boxand about once a month we hold a draw-ing for three winners: one from K-2ndgrade, one from Aleph and Bet classes, and one from the Gimel through Hayclasses. And the winners are: JasmineFried from Mrs. Linda Sonin’s 1st gradeclass, Talia Siegel from Ms. MicheleChinsky’s Aleph class, and CaylieJeruchimowitz from Ms. Chinsky’s Gimelclass. We look forward to announcingfuture winners, and yes… you must bepresent to win.

As we look forward to Chanukah, mayI extend to you and your family from theour faculty and staff a Chanukah of Joyand Light!

Janna Sugar Memorial Israel Scholarship FundTo Our Congregation Beth Shalom Family: As many of you

know Janna felt very passionately about her experiences in Israel. She made wonderful new friendships with Israeli teenagers, andshe further strengthened her relationships with her Americanfriends who shared her experiences with her. Her visits to Israelbrought her love of Judaism to even deeper levels and helpedbroaden her sense of Jewish community of which she was activelyinvolved.

Janna delighted in telling others of her Israel trips, and she wasalways very excited for others who were going there. It is becauseof Janna’s love for all that Israel represented to her that the creationof the Janna Sugar Memorial Israel Scholarship fund seems sofitting and meaningful. Though Janna’s dreams of other visits toIsrael will not be realized, it is comforting to know that other teenswill have the opportunity to develop a love for Israel as Janna did.

Throughout these past years since her death, it has meant sovery much to us that Janna continues to be remembered by all ofyou. Your donations are a very special way of acknowledgingimportant events and a very special way of letting our family knowyou are thinking of her. There is a saying that when someone ischaritable or performs some other mitzvah in memory of another, that the person’s spirit is brought closer to Hashem. We believethat through your kind and generous donations Janna’s spirit isbrought closer to all of us.

With love,Bev, Dave, Ben and Jordan

The stock market is up and then down. Itseems life is never easy. No one can predictthe market or even the days ahead, but onething is for sure. Every week there is Shab-bat. And one of the things I love best aboutShabbat is the Kiddush lunch. Sisterhood isthere to provide one every week whetherthere is a B'nai Mitzvah or not. This lunch iscoming to you despite the rising cost of

practically everything. Sisterhood has worked very hard to cut ouroperating costs so we can make this more economically feasible tothe parents of children having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Yet as thenumber of B’nai Mitzvah varies from year to year, it has becomeincreasingly difficult to maintain the high quality of our kiddushimwhile continuing our commitment to remain affordable to our CBSmembers. I am asking for the congregations' help. If you are cele-brating a simcha you are welcome to sponsor a Shabbat kiddush.Another good option is to make a donation to the Kiddush Fund. For donations over $50.00 we will put your name and simcha inthe Shabbat Brochure. We love having lunch with you but we needyour help. Thank you and see you on Shabbat. Marti

Men's Club PresidentHarvey Redfern

For those of you who may not know,Men’s Club is a synagogue organizationwhose mission is to support the syna-gogue, provide social and intellectualprograms for its members and the syna-gogue membership, enhance the Jewishspiritual life of its members and their fam-ilies, and encourage a spirit ofcamaraderie and brotherhood. If you’re

not already a member of Men’s Club, what’s holding youback? Membershipisonly$36,andfornewmembersthefirstyearisFREE! If you’re one who works too hard andwonders how to introduce balance back into your week, or ifyou’re one who watches way too much TV because you don’thave a worthwhile interest to get you off the couch and out ofthe house, I have just the solution: why not get involved insome of our Men’s Club programs? Read on to get a flavor forwhat we are all about!

Men’s Club activities started off the year on a high notewith our well-attended opening dinner in September and rous-ing Bears Bash program in November. And here is what’scoming …

On December4 Men’s Club and Beth Shalom’s YoungFamily Outreach (YFO) are co-sponsoring our annual Daddies‘NDarlingsprogram. This is a fun way for dads tospend quality time with their young children during a morningfilled with singing, crafts, and story time. We have a mouth-watering breakfast planned, including chocolate chip pancakesand more.

Sunday, December11 and January15 are the next twodates for our monthly NetworkingBreakfast. This is a pro-gram, open to all congregants, where speakers discuss thefinesse of networking and how to succeed in business in thesedifficult times. Breakfast starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by aninformal meeting with fellow congregants to grow your busi-ness network.

Men’s Club, Sisterhood, and YFO will co-host our annualBingo night on Sunday, January15. There is typically noschool the next day because of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth-day, so why not make it a family night and spend your eveningwith us! Another yearly favorite, our TexasHold’EmTour-nament, will be held on January29 to benefit charities inIsrael. And remember to mark February5 on your calendarsfor the all new WorldWideWrap program.

Finally, don’t forget that we serve one of the best breakfastdeals in town almost every Sunday morning followingMinyon. Eggs, coffee, lox, and bagels with more than just ashmear for only $6.

As always, please feel free to contact me with comments orsuggestions. Your constructive feedback is most welcome!Warm regards from my family to yours for a very HappyChanukah, filled with days that shine as brightly as the candlesin your chanukkia.
