I’m excited about the work being done by the Officers and Board members you elected to serve our Association along with me this year. We have been working together on many issues regarding management of the chapter and I am pleased with the progress we have made so far this year. The daily tasks of purchasing require a team effort between procurement staff, end users, and vendors. Similarly, MAPP also requires a team effort of association members, and the Board of Directors to be successful and provide useful benefits to the chapter. I believe one of the most important benefits to MAPP membership are the opportunities available for training and networking through our Association. I encourage every member to look and consider the seminars and conferences being offered in 2016 so you may take advantage of the full range of benefits available during the year. The most immediate of these opportunities is the upcoming 2016 MAPP Spring Conference, which will be held in St. Joseph, May 11-13, 2016. Come experience the “Procurement Academy – Power of the Past, Force For the Future”. This conference is packed full of relevant topics, exciting speakers, and will be attended by procurement personnel from many different agencies from across the state of Missouri. Attendance will help you learn new tips and tricks, will plant the seeds for ideas to improve processes in your entity, and will allow you to make contacts and develop relations to assist as you move forward in your purchasing career. Additionally, the chapter is hosting a 2-day NIGP training seminar, “Contracting for Public Services” on May 9-10, at the conference hotel on the two days prior to the Spring Conference. MAPP scholarships are available to help in covering registration costs for conferences or seminars. Look for registration information for this seminar and also for the conference, including the complete agenda and scholarship application information, on the chapter website: www.mappi.org I look forward to seeing many of you at the Spring Conference. If I may be of any service, or if you have any questions about chapter issues or activities, please feel free to contact me or any other chapter members for advice, guidance, and support. Warmest Regards, John

President’s Corner By John Hribar, CPPB MAPP President, 2016

Greetings To My Fellow MAPP Members,

I hope 2016 is going well for each of you and want to express my thanks for the

opportunity to serve as your Chapter President for the Missouri Association of

Public Purchasing (MAPP). I’m excited about the work being done by the Officers

and Board members you elected to serve our Association along with me this

year. We have been working together on many issues regarding management of the

chapter and I am pleased with the progress we have made so far this year. The daily

tasks of purchasing require a team effort between procurement staff, end users, and

vendors. Similarly, MAPP also requires a team effort of association members, and

the Board of Directors to be successful and provide useful benefits to the chapter.

I believe one of the most important benefits to MAPP membership are the

opportunities available for training and networking through our Association. I

encourage every member to look and consider the seminars and conferences being

during the year. The most immediate of these opportunities is the upcoming 2016

MAPP Spring Conference, which will be held in St. Joseph, May 11-13, 2016.

Come experience the “Procurement Academy – Power of the Past, Force For the

Future”. This conference is packed full of relevant topics, exciting speakers, and

will be attended by procurement personnel from many different agencies from

across the state of Missouri. Attendance will help you learn new tips and tricks,

will plant the seeds for ideas to improve processes in your entity, and will allow you

to make contacts and develop relations to assist as you move forward in your

purchasing career. Additionally, the chapter is hosting a 2-day NIGP training

seminar, “Contracting for Public Services” on May 9-10, at the conference hotel on

NIGP LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT SYMPOSIUM 2016 By: Kara Daniel Buyer and Surplus Coordinator City of Springfield MAPP Secretary 2016

The NIGP Leadership Development Symposium was held February 4th – 6th 2016 in Herndon, VA. As

your MAPP Board Secretary I was honored to be selected represent MAPP at the symposium. Other

attendees of the symposium were comprised of nearly 90 other NIGP Chapter Officers from the

United States and Canada as well as key NIGP staff.

NIGP’s goal for this event is to provide Chapter leaders with tools and techniques to keep moving

Chapters forward. This event is intended to motivate and inspire chapter leaders and grow officer’s

knowledge base. It was an opportunity to get new ideas, have a little fun, and open your mind to so

many possibilities!

From the time I walked in the meeting space I could immediately tell this was not your average

leadership training and unlike anything I had ever attended! There were signs taped to the floor,

balloons taped to the wall, markers and flip chart paper on each table, it was an exciting and

welcoming atmosphere!

The Facilitators were Jill McCrory and Dr. Steve Swafford with Leadership Outfitters. Their interactive

training style was very interactive, hands on, and very informative…there was never a dull moment!

Throughout the enter symposium there was time to network with other Chapters Officers for new

insight and ideas. One of my favorite ideas came from the Arkansas Chapter, they have a Sunshine

Committee. To be honest, my first thought was this has something to do with Sunshine requests but

is far from it! Their Sunshine Committee is responsible for recognizing their Chapter members,

whether it is a birthday, service anniversary, life event, etc. The Sunshine Committee honors their

members and gives them praises for their achievements. I thought this was a great way to engage

their membership. I was very impressed with the Oklahoma Chapter and the numerous educational

opportunities they offer to their members throughout the year, to help with continuing education

credits. The Wisconsin Chapter does a wonderful job of communicating with their members through

their website!

I must thank NIGP for hosting such a great event and the MAPP Board and our Chapter for your

support. This was truly one of the best training experiences of my career! I hope to our Chapter will

continue to send our Officers because the takeaways for the Chapter are priceless!

Where Are they Now?

Cale Turner

Past MAPP President Interview by Liz Palazzolo

What did you enjoy most about being MAPP President? I most enjoyed working with all the amazing people that make up

the MAPP organization. MAPP has given so much to me (both professionally and personally) over the years and it was truly

an honor to be MAPP President. Being MAPP President was an easy job for me because of the dedicated board members I

was lucky to man the ship with. Some of my best friends in life, I have met through this

organization and for that I will forever be grateful!

What was the biggest challenge for the organization during your Presidency? At the time of my presidency, MAPP was

beginning to have some financial concerns. It was a tough challenge implementing new policies to try and strengthen the

financial health of the organization. We want to offer as many educational opportunities as absolutely possible to the

members but have to be conscious of our budget at the same time.

What would you say to MAPP members about becoming a MAPP Board Member or Officer? It is a great way to meet the

membership and work with people you may never get the chance to do so. I lean on members I met while I served on the

MAPP Board on a daily basis which is a very valuable tool.

If you could describe your legacy, what would it be? Well not sure this is something to be proud of…but I believe I was the

first MAPP President to be honored with an oversized brassiere sash at the Spring MAPP Conference. It was quite a treat!!

Were there any pointers you learned being MAPP’s President that might benefit the current President that you’d like to

share? Don’t take things too seriously. Remember to have fun along the way as we are volunteers. Also, reach out to mem-

bership as much as possible and develop those contacts with the membership.

What are you doing now? I am currently the Purchasing Agent with the City of Columbia. I have held this position for a

little over a year. I have a great staff and feel very blessed to be a part of a great team at the City. I was married to my

beautiful wife Janet in August of 2015…so I am a newlywed (life is good!). I have two boys Aidan 12 and Isaac 10 and now

have two step sons Ryan and Shane. My wife and I recently adopted our fifth child, Chance who is a Pit Bull who thinks he is

human. Outside of work I love to hunt and fish and race dirt modified’s all over the State of Missouri and surrounding

states. I wish I could do this as a full time job but for now it is a hobby…a very expensive hobby.

Last Word? Meow… (Bill Noyes might be the only one to get the significance of this)
