• The ring of fire is an area around the Pacific Ocean with a lot of earthquake and volcano activity.

1. What is the Ring of Fire?2. Why do you think there are so many earthquakes

and volcanoes in the Ring of Fire?

Chapter 12 Earthquakes

Thru 1: Pg. 55Cornell Notes

Page 12: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

What are Earthquakes?

• Earthquake-sudden movement of the ground caused by the release of energy when the rocks move along a fault.– Fault-a break in rock where movement

occurs.

Page 13: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

Where do most earthquakes occur?

• Most earthquakes occur at plate boundaries, where there is a lot of stress.

• Some happen at fault zones

Page 14: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

Anatomy of an earthquake

Page 15: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

• Focus-where the first movement occurs in the earth’s crust.

• Epicenter-point on the earth’s surface directly above the focus.

Page 16: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

Seismic Waves

• Body waves-travel thru the earth’s interior.Includes:– P waves-primary• Fastest waves, first to be detected.• Move back and forth parallel to the motion of

the wave.• Move thru solids, liquids and gases.

– S waves-secondary• Second fastest• Move perpendicular to motion of wave.• Move only thru solids

• Surface waves-travel along the earth’s surface.– Slowest moving waves– Move rock side to side and up and down– Cause the most damage during earthquakes

Page 17: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES
Page 18: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

Shadow Zones

Page 19: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

Seismology

• Seismology is the study of earthquakes.

• Seismograph-instrument that records seismic waves.

Page 20: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES

Measuring Earthquakes

• Magnitude-strength of an earthquake.– Richter scale

• Intensity-how much damage an earthquake causes.– Mercalli

scale

Page 21: VOLCANOES AND EARTHQUAKES
