Dear Friends of Celebration,

During these early days of summer, my dog Piper and I have enjoyed walking the shaded live oak trails at Myrtle Beach State Park. These wooded pathways offer us adventure and exercise as we walk softly and listen carefully to the many sounds of nature around us. Piper especially enjoys the vast variety of scents and smells along the trail as we wind our way through the woods and marshes. It seems to do us both good inwardly and outwardly to walk worshipfully in the woods, reverencing the wonders of God’s creation and embracing the spectrum of colors and textures of the flora and fauna that surround us and enfold us along the way. God renews us in heart, mind and soul as we walk, easing anxieties, loosening tight muscles, and restoring joy for our journey. Each time we leave this peaceful and pastoral place, I pray that God will help us leave behind anything needless that might burden us and that God will help us hold on to the goodness and grace given in this time together. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to walk the trails at Myrtle Beach State Park.

God Bless Our Every Step!

Pastor Tom

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.” Psalm 51:10-12

Holy Communion will be served July 3, 2016

Next Session Meeting is Sunday, July 17 at 12:30 PM.

The Session met on June 27. Following are the items discussed and acted on:

The church is having the financial records audited by a local CPA firm. The auditor has been working with Elder Coulter and church staff. A report is expected by the end of the summer.

The Session approved establishing and appointing a three-member Audit Review Team that will meet annually or as needed to review financial records following guidelines provided by the Session. Anyone with accounting or audit experience who is interested in serving should contact Elder Coulter.

The Stewardship Committee met with a group of new members to get their feedback on our stewardship process.

Preparation for Vacation Bible School is underway. You may fill out a registration form on the church website.

July 17 will be Youth Sunday with our young people conducting the service.

Church Office Administrator Linda Berry will be on vacation July 11-14.

The Session voted to approve extending Rev. Rebecca Kiser’s Temporary Supply contract for an additional 90 days. Becky has been meeting with congregants, working with widows and widowers, teaching Tool Time, and working on a possible new

“practice of the faith” type class for the fall.

The Session and congregation recognized Pastor Tom for his 30-year anniversary of ordination on June 12. The actual anniversary was June 15. Several folks shared words of congratulations and the Session presented Pastor Tom with the gift of a bracelet. Pastor Tom expressed his appreciation to the Session during the meeting.

The Property Committee has been in conversation with the county regarding mosquito control on our property. Since the ordnance clearing, there are areas of standing water that were treated by the county.

Two new pieces of playground equipment purchased by the Preschool will be installed shortly thanks to the generosity of a church member who donated funds for the installation costs.

Pastor Tom is in the process of speaking to volunteers to fill vacancies on the Preschool Board.

Funds to purchase a new telephone system have been donated by a church member, and the church staff is in the process of selecting the new system.

The Session is having ongoing conversations about our “cleared” property. As part of the ordnance clearing, all trees were removed from the church property. Larger trees were hauled away; however, smaller debris was run through a mulching machine. The end result is land strewn with substantial pieces of debris and uneven terrain with large areas of standing water when it rains. This stagnant water is a breeding ground for

mosquitoes and snakes. The cost of completely removing all debris, leveling the land, installing proper drainage ponds and planting grass is quite substantial. Pastor Tom will set up a meeting with representatives from Presbytery to discuss the situation further since Presbytery is the actual owner of the land. What to do with the acreage is an area that the Session is praying for guidance in helping us discern what God has in mind for our church. We ask you to pray with us.

The Session elected Jan Coulter and Nancy Torcivia to the church Nominating Committee. A Congregational Meeting is called for July 17 following Sunday worship for the purpose of electing three members to the Nominating Committee from the congregation at large.

The Session approved the monthly draw down of funds from Presbytery of $3,660. Remember, all financial assistance from Presbytery is slated to end at the close of 2016.

On August 8, Monday, following Tool Time, a church workday is planned. The purpose is to reorganize and clean out storage areas in the church. With space at such a premium, the goal is to maximize how we are utilizing available space. If your group has items stored at the church, please take a look at your areas and see if anything can be placed in the outdoor containers or if anything needs to be discarded.

What an extraordinary group we had at the Breakfast Buddies at Flapjack’s Restaurant. Aside from it being a beautiful sunny day outside, we also had a wonderful fun-filled morning, inside, with lots of laughter, jokes, and a little bit of straw blowing. Of course, since it was Harvey Dulin’s first time at the

Breakfast Buddies, he was initiated with a straw being blown at him. We had 18 people attend, including our fearless leader Tom, who was seated at the head of the table. Tom said the blessing. The food and service was commendable. I’m sorry Judy Leonard, who was our hostess, couldn't attend as she

wasn't feeling up to par; however, thank you, Judy. Next month, July 15, we will have breakfast at IHOP on Highway 501. Yours truly is hostess. As usual, 9:00 am is our designated time. Please sign up in the front of the narthex, so we have a head count.

For our June luncheon the la-dies went to Sam Snead’s and Kris Zillioux was our hostess. Thanks to Kris for making the arrangements.

There were 18 Ladybugs in attendance. Yours truly wasn’t there as I was in Bath, PA welcoming my new grandson, Jeremy Sawyer Bird, into the world. Our smallest Ladybug, Hailey, came with Mom, Karen Williams.

We collected $80.00 for chari-table purposes. Thank you ladies for your generosity.

I’m told there was lots of laughter as usual. The food was great and Dara, our favorite waitress, was there to serve.

The next lunch will be Thurs-day, July 7, at noon at the Emperor Penguin Grill located at 2153 Route 544, just south of Myrtle Ridge Dr. This is a

new restaurant and it is very good. Yours truly will be your hostess. Sign up in the narthex if you know you can make it. Let me know if you need a ride. All Ladybugs, their friends and family (female of course) are invited…..hope to see you there.

SOCKS FOR SANTA During the month of July, the Mission/Outreach Committee is asking members and friends to collect children’s socks, for school-aged children, in all colors. The Salvation Army likes to send a pair of socks with each pair of sneakers given to needy children. We

will again collect Sneakers for Santa in the Fall. We appreciate the love shown by our congregation for children in need.

HELPING HAND To date we have collected 928 pounds of food for Helping Hand. If you are able, please bring in your canned goods each Sunday. There is a list on the bulletin board of items they need. Thank you for your generosity in helping others.

On behalf of the youth, we would like to thank everyone for giving us an opportunity to go to Camp Pee Dee. Also, for allowing us to make new friends and reunite with old friends, but that's not all we did. As a group we came together as we were setting up tents. We enjoyed canoeing, tubing and white water rafting.

Great memories were made as we participated in these events. Highlights were Ashlyn falling in the 50-degree water, Jimmy losing his shoes while rafting, music/dancing on the road trip, learning to speak goat, and the beauty of seeing a bald eagle in its natural habitat.

On July 17, come hear more about camp as the youth share their experiences on Youth Sunday. Ashlyn, Katelyn, Jimmy, Michelle, Fallon, and Nicklaus

Singing in the darkness. We live in difficult times. It hits me hard every time I hear of another shooting…another explosion…another hate crime…more racial inequality…more social injustice… The list goes on. It’s almost too much to bear. In my opinion, one of God’s greatest gifts to us is the gift of music. Time and time again, humanity has turned to singing to cry out to God. We see it in the Psalms, in Negro spirituals, and in music that comes from times of war. Messiaen wrote his iconic Quartet for the End of Time while in a

concentration camp. Out of deep despair, beauty emerges. The German poet and author Berthold Auerbach said “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” In processing current events, I am reminded of a hymn in the Glory to God hymnal. #750 Goodness is Stronger Than Evil is a text written by the Archbishop Desmond Tutu and set to music by John Bell in 1995. I sang this hymn at the Montreat Worship and Music Conference last week with approximately 900 music ministers, organists and choir members.

There was something deeply moving in singing this text in the same historic auditorium where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a speech 51 years ago. It was a reminder that even in the midst of despair, God is with us. Let us always remember that GOODNESS IS STRONGER THAN EVIL. LOVE IS STRONGER THAN HATE. LIGHT IS STRONGER THAN DARKNESS. LIFE IS STRONGER THAN DEATH…VICTORY IS OURS! Let this be our song. Sing it out. The world needs to hear it.
